About the Author Sandra Hirsh is professor and director of the School of Information at San José State University. Prior to joining the school as director, she worked in the Silicon Valley for more than a decade at major technology companies: Hewlett Packard, Microsoft, and LinkedIn. As an industry user experience researcher, leader, and manager, she contributed to R&D research projects and influenced the user experience of web, mobile, and TV consumer products resulting in five US patent applications and one patent. She was previously an assistant professor at the University of Arizona and has taught courses for San José State University and the University of Washington.

An Interesting, Multipurpose Book for Many Audiences By Alison Information Services Today is, first a foremost, a really good read, and particularly as it's technically a textbook. As a student going for my Master's in Library and Info Science (LIS), I'm often sidelined or sidetracked researching small details that LIS professionals are already quite knowledgeable about-such as the infinite number of acronyms and abbreviations used in the field. Thankfully, Info Services Today has four pages worth of explanations, ranging from ASRS to ISIS to CCBY. It’s just one small example of the myriad of thoughtful details in this textbook that I found very helpful. And like the LIS discipline itself, the book brings together many different voices through its contributors, covering a multitude of topics all combining to provide diverse perspectives and unique points of view. I learned about Management Skills for the Information Professional, which covers management of employees, collections, budgets—everything you need to be aware of when in a management role. I read all about maker spaces and tips to go about putting them in place in your own library. And the final chapters gave excellent advice on searching, interviewing and landing the perfect post-degree LIS job: thoughtful, helpful advice from an expert, I Need a Library Job's (INALJ.com) CEO Naomi House.The book comes with multimedia extras like websites to explore for more detail on a particular topic, materials that can be constantly updated as new information and studies come out; and there are a series of webinars co-hosted through Library Journal, featuring Dr. Hirsh and selected chapter authors discussing hot topics & trends in their area.Instructors can use this book to help their students learn all about the field. Students like me can learn more about the "foundational core" of the field from experts. Current information professionals can use the book to refresh their knowledge and learn about topics that might not have been covered when they were in school. And even non-LIS folks can enjoy this book as an answer to the common question: what do librarians DO? Read this book, and learn all about it.

Clear and easy to read By Jennifer Grey Information Services Today was the textbook assigned for my Foundations of Information Professions class, and as textbooks go, I've certainly had worse. Sandra Hirsh edits the volume, composed of individually authored chapters that are pretty consistent in terms of ease of readability.The text is divided into seven parts made up of between three and eight chapters each. In my opinion it's a bit front-weighted in terms of interest and usefulness: the first four sections focus on the cultural and historical landscape of information services, the various forms the profession can take, the different roles of information services in the digital age, and the users the services are intended to aid. Chapters contained therein on equity of access and user experience were particularly helpful, as are the brief chapters on the various professional options (school librarian, special librarian, digital librarian).Section five, focusing on the various aspects of management related to libraries, I found to be glossy and reductive and nearly completely useless. Frankly, I'd advise reading just about any general management book, which would cover pretty much everything except the chapter specifically on collections management. From there the text moves to a section on information issues (open access, information ethics, copyright) before closing with another nothing-but-broadstrokes section on career management (be a lifelong learner! make a skill set to figure out what kind of job you want!).Overall Information Services Today was helpful, particularly as it's clearly written and eschews the kind of academic jargon that can clog textbooks and drive students insane.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Textbook. By dannaa Another textbook! This is pretty interesting because each section is written by a different author. Some sections are better than others, but at least if you are not enjoying an author, they are there briefly.
