Terrific as a read-aloud, it will keep young children rapt from the first page until the last. It also has a wonderful message of tolerance, acceptance, and unconditional love. About the Author Todd Tarpley is a former ninja who still enjoys covering himself in mud and leaves. He is the author of several picture books including “Ten Tiny Toes” with Marc Brown. He lives with his relatively normal family in New York City. You can visit him at toddtarpley.com. Danny Chatzikonstantinou was born in 1973. He illustrates children’s books and sometimes writes the words, too. He learned his craft by drawing on napkins at first. Later on, he moved to sketch pads and notebooks. Now he has a full set of sharpened pencils and tons of blank drawing paper that he never uses because he moved back to napkins again. Danny is a self-taught artist who lives and works in Athens, Greece.

Sounds the Right Notes By Pop Bop I like silly picture books, especially ones that feature exasperated kids coping with outrageous or wildly fantastical situations. But. That's a tall order to fill. Many times a book will have a fun premise, or a nice tone, but it just can't avoid wandering into the awkward or weird or cutesy, so much so that it loses the kid reader's respect. For some reason that I can't divine this seems to be a particular problem for books that involve ninjas, and especially for books with grandmother ninjas, (or ninja bunnies). Well, this is the long and grumpy, (I apologize), way of working around to the opinion that this book is a grandmother ninja book that is actually fun and funny, with just just enough edge to set up the silliness.Grandma is a fun ninja until she goes a little too far and embarrasses the grand child hero at school. Then she has to tighten up her act and the kid has to loosen up a little. Lessons learned all around, and then there's an unexpected snappy ending. There's a lot of energy here. The story is fast paced. Just like little kids our hero is up, then he's down, then he's up again. The drawing is cheerful and expressive, with some subtle funny touches and a lot of momentum. There aren't any heavy-handed messages, but what is mildly suggested, (patience, regard for others, independence, respect), is fine by me.So, at bottom this is a cheerful treat that lends itself to being read by a favorite grandma with a favored grandchild, (aren't they all?). Can't ask for much more than that.Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. By Kelly Maldia *I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.*I usually review adult fiction. But I reviewed this book because I thought it would interest my kids. My mother has never been a traditional grandma. I always explained to them that she was not the kind of grandma that would make you cookies. She’d help you break a horse, shoot a gun, or disarm an attacker. While my kids are on the upper ages for this book, they enjoyed it.I thought the book was inventive. Ninja’s are cool and pique the interest of children, especially boys. I’m forever trying to find things to interest my son. The language used was more modern and youthful. I liked it because that is how younger people talk but it’s not proper English. Some parents might not like that. I thought the message of not appreciating what you have was great. The illustration was adorable. I thought that Ninja Grandma with pearls and handbag was a hoot.Kids’ feedback:My son really liked it. He liked the thought of a non-traditional grandma. He thought the pictures were cool. He laughed out loud when we got to the end with the pirate. He gave it 4 stars.My daughter like the idea of a non-traditional grandma, she looked at it from a different point of view. She looked at it that a girl could be a ninja. I didn’t see that coming but I’m glad she took that away. She gave it 5 stars.

(Although Grandma laughed when we asked her to go into training). Ethan's grandma is unstoppable! And tons of fun. She springs into action, able to do the most amazing ninja tricks, everything a ninja should do.The illustrations are priceless, adding so much to the already fun plot, and that's exactly what a picture book should do. As to the story itself, it's well-written for the intended age group and keeps a great pace as the reader follows Ethan's adventures from one page to the next. This is one of those books that will have to be read again and again and again and again. At least, my daughter still has me reading it.Even though there's tons of fun, there's a wonderful message too--for Ethan and his grandma. Despite a moment of concern, the solution leaves a warm feeling of love. Oh, and a perfect, grandma surprise too.Summed up, this is a fun book boys and girls will really enjoy. After all, ninjas, especially grandma ones, are simply cool.I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
