They all have one, quite unfortunate, thing in common - the stories are a little dull.That said, this is one of has a possible dinosaur egg in it, which provides some suspense, a dramatic twist (spoiler alert: it's not a dinosaur egg Max found!), and the picture style is what I like to see in kids books - clear, simple, and not from clip-art... There's another one by the same author/illustrator duo Max Has a Fish (Penguin Young Readers, L1), and it's on our list.

This book's straightforward and honest approach to offering tips and guidelines on how to live a more fulfilling life is unlike anything I've ever read before. My favorite thing about this book is that its guidelines and lessons can be useful to absolutely anyone, regardless of age or point in career. Five stars - would highly recommend.

SPOILERS belowSo the author spent time building up both characters and we get to know them and how they feel which is fine but then within a few pages have them declaring love to each other. It seems like the pacing is a little off.I would have loved for Mac's pain to be explored a little bit more, I think this would've provided a bit more emotional undertone.The violence/injuries seems a bit too excessive. I get that it was nearing the climax but Mac already suffered burns and injuries a few days before THEN to suffer 10 broken ribs, a gunshot wound, head injuries, blood lose, broken leg(s)? And a few others just makes it seem unlikely she'd even live through it.Lastly, the 6 month skip...there was so much potential for us the readers to see Mac and Sarah bond further, for us to see Sarah struggle with accepting mac going back to work or seeing mac's struggle to recovery.This book was an ok read. Good character build up. Not a massive amount of getting to know each other before declaring love. 7/10

Mardi Alexander writes about what she knows, firefighting, animal rehabilitating, and loving women from an Australian perspective. This novel has tenderness and care of a genuine quality, plus it will take you to the edge of your seat and have your heart thumping in your chest.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Doubly Bad. Don't put yourself through it. By hellbound Gah! I initially gave this book two stars, simply because the author is Australian. I soon realised that that was not a good enough reason for the extra one. I couldn't finish this book, and gave up quite early. I must admit I am baffled as to why I purchased it since I read the teaser of the first couple of chapters. Anyway, the review: This book was filled with superfluous information and was pedantic to the point of boredom. In case you missed it, I used two words together as well as the single which all pretty much mean the same thing. This is what Ms Alexander does with her writing. (What was the so-called editor doing--her nails perhaps??) The dialog was also repetitious, and horribly stilted. Every paragraph contained incidences where three long sentences were used when one would have sufficed. All in all, it makes for a very difficult read. As an example, Ms Alexander talks about the worker going to the storage lockers to get the required tools (individually mentioned) to clean out the animal shelters. Then the author tells the reader that the worker then takes said items across the compound to the pens where the poor things are kept. Then we are subjected to the worker using each and every tool to do each and every specific action that they were designed for. For **** sake, the woman cleaned out the animal pens!!! That was all we needed to know!

If you are looking for a hilarious, clever and quick read, do not hesitate - purchase MY 1992 DIARY right away. The author uses her real-life, real-hilarious diary entries from 1992 and adds anecdotes from today. I particularly liked the 90210 section of the book where Dawn quips about what happened each night for several weeks on the show and decodes what she meant as an adult. This book brought back so many fun memories of my childhood growing up in the 1990s and I'm sure it will do the same for you.In a word this book is hilarious! If you like to laugh or are looking for a quick and easy read, pick this book up immediately. I am very much looking forward to seeing what Ms. Luebbe has up her sleeves next!

Tales of love, intrigue, and Full House abound in the form of excerpts from her diary with witty commentary from the present day to decode the handwriting and references. If only I had access to such a book at the time,I might have really understood girls...

About the Author

Lee J. Krajewski is Professor Emeritus at The Ohio State University and Professor Emeritus at the University of Notre Dame. While at The Ohio State University, he received the University Alumni Distinguished Teaching Award and the College of Business Outstanding Faculty Research Award. He initiated the Center for Excellence in Manufacturing Management and served as its director for 4 years. In addition, he received the National President’s Award and the National Award of Merit of the American Production and Inventory Control Society. He served as president of the Decision Sciences Institute and was elected a fellow of the institute in 1988. He received the Distinguished Service Award in 2003.

 

Lee received his PhD from the University of Wisconsin. Over the years, he has designed and taught courses at both graduate and undergraduate levels on topics such as operations strategy, introduction to operations management, operations design, project management, and manufacturing planning and control systems.

 

Lee served as the editor of Decision Sciences, was the founding editor of the Journal of Operations Management, and has served on several editorial boards. Widely published himself, Lee has contributed numerous articles to such journals as Decision Sciences, Journal of Operations Management, Management Science, Production and Operations Management, International Journal of Production Research, Harvard Business Review, and Interfaces, to name just a few. He has received five best-paper awards. Lee’s areas of specialization include operations strategy, manufacturing planning and control systems, supply chain management, and master production scheduling.

 

Manoj K. Malhotra is the Jeff B. Bates Professor in the Darla Moore School of Business, and has served as the chairman of the Management Science Department at the University of South Carolina (USC), Columbia, since 2000. He is the founding director of the Center for Global Supply Chain and Process Management (GSCPM), which has been in operation since 2005. He earned an engineering undergraduate degree from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur, India, in 1983, and a PhD in operations management from The Ohio State University in 1990. He is a Fellow of the Decision Sciences Institute and is certified as a Fellow of the American Production and Inventory Management Society. Manoj has conducted seminars and consulted with firms such as Avaya, Continental, Cummins Turbo Technologies, John Deere, Metso Paper, Palmetto Health, Sonoco, Verizon, Walmart, and Westinghouse-Toshiba among others.

 

Apart from teaching operations management, supply chain management, and global business issues at USC, Manoj has also taught at the Terry School of Business, University of Georgia; Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien in Austria; and the Graduate School of Management at Macquarie University, Australia. His research has thematically focused on the deployment of flexible resources in manufacturing and service firms, and on the interface between operations and supply chain management and other functional areas of business. His work on these and related issues has been published in leading refereed journals.  Manoj has been recognized for his pedagogical and scholarly contributions through several teaching and discipline-wide research awards, including the Michael J. Mungo Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award in 2006 from the University of South Carolina and the Carolina Trustee Professor Award in 2014.  He is active in professional organizations such as Decision Sciences Institute (DSI) and Production and Operations Management Society (POMS), and has served as the program chair for international conferences at both DSI and POMS. He also serves on the editorial boards of top-tier journals in the field.

 

Larry P. Ritzman is Professor Emeritus at The Ohio State University and Professor Emeritus at Boston College. While at The Ohio State University, he served as department chairman and received several awards for both teaching and research, including the Pace Setters’ Club Award for Outstanding Research. While at Boston College, he held the Thomas J. Galligan, Jr. chair and received the Distinguished Service Award from the School of Management. He received his doctorate at Michigan State University, having had prior industrial experience at the Babcock and Wilcox Company. Over the years, he has been privileged to teach and learn more about operations management with numerous students at all levels–undergraduate, MBA, executive MBA, and doctorate.

 

Particularly active in the Decision Sciences Institute, Larry has served as council coordinator, publications committee chair, track chair, vice president, board member, executive committee member, doctoral consortium coordinator, and president. He was elected a fellow of the institute in 1987 and earned the Distinguished Service Award in 1996. He has received three best-paper awards. He has been a frequent reviewer, discussant, and session chair for several other professional organizations.

 

Larry’s areas of particular expertise are service processes, operations strategy, production and inventory systems, forecasting, multistage manufacturing, and layout. An active researcher, Larry’s publications have appeared in such journals as Decision Sciences, Journal of Operations Management, Production and Operations Management, Harvard Business Review, and Management Science. He has served in various editorial capacities for several journals.

Needs an editor By Amazon Customer OPS Management is a tough course, each chapter deserves its own semester long course; so I am giving some benefit of the doubt to the authors; however, the internal formatting and references when introducing new concepts is inconsistent. The text does continue to use the the oxford comma, so that is at least an extra star. Besides grammar issues, I am spotting about one error per chapter in the solved problems or figures/examples. I am not sure which other texts are better, but there has to be better out there.

Technically not the worst textbook but definitely close (online version from publisher is worse) By G B Busby There are portions of this textbook that are almost unreadable. Conceptually there isn't anything too difficult for the average person to understand, the problem lays in the lackluster writing abilities of the authors.The most I'd be willing to pay this book brand new would be about $20 for the physical version.The online version of the book provided by the publisher which is provided after you pay for the MyOmLab semester subscription (as I was required to purchase) is scary bad. The online version has all of the faults as the physical version AND gets an organizational structure that rivals healthcare.gov's initial rollout. For that reason alone I'm giving the physical version of the book the second star.Possibly the most annoying example of bad writing is in some of the formulas, for example the formula to decide whether or not an organization should continue to purchase an item from an outside source or to purchase the ability to make their own is strangely different that what is taught in finance and accounting textbooks (fixed costs are denoted by "F" which is normal but Variable costs are denoted by "C" which is strange, as you can imagine, Variable costs are typically listed using a "V").

Unfortunately, that was not something I was looking for. It did a good job going over what the common core requirements are if the want to know that. I will check out another Spectrum item as I have been happy with them in the past. This just wasn't this item for me this time.

Darlene Dawn, now retired from the corporate world of real estate association management, enjoys writing, music, and spending time with friends and family. She lives in the northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC, with her husband and their Jack Russell terrier mix. They both have adult children from previous marriages who have blessed them with grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Darlene Dawn is a pen name.

Belief, Unity and Love -- A How-to-Guide By Kendra Lee The Inner Connection: A Spiritual Journey of Self-Discovery and Emotional Freedom, One Day at a Time is one part 12-steps, one part a Course in Miracles, and one part miscellaneous metaphysics (think “channeling,” for instance). The book functions as a how-to-guide for seeing the world from a new perspective: no more victims/victimizers, no more separation between humans and God, no more need to cling tight to our (often vain) attempts at control. A foundational premise of the book is that we can change our perspective (shifting from negative to positive) and change our interaction with the world.Books of this nature can either be intriguing or go wildly off the rails into what feels like metaphysical absurdity. I have to admit, this one was intriguing. I got sober in a 12-step program, so some of the colloquialisms and pithy points-of-view on life were familiar; they worked for me, so I felt like the author and I were starting from common ground. Maybe that’s why it was relatively easy for me to follow her into completely unfamiliar spiritual terrain. Some of the aspects of the book made me raise an eyebrow; I am not sure where they fall in my system of beliefs. But the author seemed well aware that this skepticism would occur in some of her readers; she even encouraged being skeptical yet staying open to the possibility. I never felt like she was trying to sell me something. I just felt like she wanted to share a transcending peace that she has uncovered, one she believes is accessible to all.I do wish the author had included more concrete, personal narrative examples of the way the principles in the book work in her life and in the lives of people she has encountered. There were some anecdotes in the book, but I didn’t find them particularly compelling. A strong narrative woven throughout would have made the book that much more engaging. And, while the reader will always know where the author obtained the sources she uses in the book, the way the source references are cited in the text disrupted the flow of the writing. I found myself trying to manifest footnotes about halfway through the book. (No luck on that one)The workbook-type questions included at the end of each chapter give the reader a way to put the spiritual principles discussed into practice. I found myself thinking about some of the questions, and using some of the spiritual tools, throughout the day. I wanted to discuss this book with my partner. In fact, I may even read it again. It has a lot to offer.*I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Her recovery was aided by the twelve step program, and she was greatly affected and helped by growing and strengthening her spiritual condition. She writes to show what steps and avenues helped her, and to inspire the same pursuit in spiritual growth in others going through similar circumstances. She took her own unique path, including using spiritual contacts, and has found a far deeper understanding of herself and her belief and approach to life.I liked how the author was both offering information on what helped her on her path to recovery and becoming a stronger more spiritual person, but also remains positive and encouraging to the reader throughout the book. She freely admits that what she has done and found strength in may not work for everyone, and in her honesty and encouragement I think her message is all the more helpful and meaningful. She helps provide a wonderful frame of mind and thoughtful advice that I think all readers can use to help be more mindful and emotionally healthy.I received a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Connect to your inner self By jksmith4 The Inner Connection was a very inspiring book as it follows one woman who is figuring out her “Higher Power” and how it can affect how she views herself. This book is like a self-help inspirational book that is good for anyone trying to give themselves a more positive outlook on life. If one has a more positive outlook on life then we are more likely to avoid addictive behaviors. Then if one is wrapped up in something addictive and dangerous the book gives insight on how to turn this into something productive and constructive, kind of like turning lemons into lemonade. The book could follow the “short and sweet” principle as many of the ideas expressed do not need a long explanation or description. I liked that this book came from someone who actually experienced these issues and is not a psychologist type wanting to “fix” someone. It gives the story that much more meaning to readers because they see that addiction can be overcome. I would recommend this book particularly for those struggling with any sort of addiction.I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

It appears to have been poorly scanned and then shrunk (from 9x12 to 8.5x11). Also, two words are misspelled in the TITLE! ("Studies" is misspelled "studes" and "cornet" is misspelled "coronet").

The Bigods were one of the most powerful and important families in thirteenth-century England. They are chiefly remembered for their dramatic interventions in high politics. Roger III Bigod (c. 1209-70) famously led the march on Westminster Hall in 1258 against Henry III, while Roger IV Bigod (1245-1306) confronted Edward I in 1297 in similar fashion. This book is the first full-scale study of these two earls, and explores in depth the reasons that led each of them to take the extreme step of confronting his king. It is only in part, however, a political study. In seeking to understand the motives that lay behind their public actions, the book scrutinizes the earls' private affairs. It establishes for the first time the precise extent of their landed estate, the size of their incomes, and the membership and quality of their affinities. It also examines their relationships with friends and relatives, their building works, and even their personalities. Extensive use is made throughout of unpublished manuscript sources: in particular, the hundreds of ministers' accounts that have survived from the administration of Roger IV Bigod, and the charters given by both earls, which are calendared and translated in an appendix.

I noticed this when I bought the book so I thought I would give it a quick read before our meeting. It was a really nice review of the book in terms of setting and a look at each of the character. It also had an author bio that added interesting information. There are some very good discussion points to help if the group needs some jumping off points.

After a while, you resign yourself to the fact that there just aren't a lot of original ideas out there. Self help authors tend to reference each other's content more than they discover and develop new ideas. Martin is the rare author that sets trends instead of following them. He takes concepts that are misunderstood and flips them on their head. Years ago, he destigmatized habits and showed us how to harness our ability to perform complex behaviors repeatedly without conscious attention as a way to design the lives we want one habit at a time. It's a powerful concept that has made a dramatic impact in my life. Every day begins and ends with a review of the habits I'm actively installing. Waking up early, going to the gym daily, saving more money, eating more healthfully--all things that used to be hard that have now become automatic.Now Martin is back to shed some light on the concept of pressure. As he explains, pressure is neither good nor bad. It's a neutral force that can either cause you stress and failure or that can be harnessed for greater happiness, productivity, creativity, and purpose. One of the key components of ultra high achievers is their healthy relationship to pressure. They learn how to use it, when to use it, how to apply it to themselves and the people around them. While the underlying principle is easy to understand, it's the plethora of useful examples and techniques that make this book immediately actionable. Quick, fun read. You'll be nodding your head from beginning to end, and find yourself inspired and excited to bring pressure into your life more consciously and constructively. Highly recommend.

Goodmanson The Pressure Paradox: Your Path to Maximum Productivity, Performance & Peace of Mind This book came at a perfect time for me. I was going through some transitions and Grunburg's words inspired me to lean into some of the pressure I was facing and realize instead of avoiding it, using it to become better. Very helpful book.

The Pressure Paradox is wonderfully written and is helping me to view pressure in a new light. So excited to use the techniques from the book to make pressure work for me instead of against me!
