A Journey in the Moon Balloon: When Images Speak Louder than Words, by Joan Drescher

Review I have been using dreams and drawings by my patients for decades. Consciousness speaks to us through images. I commend Joan Drescher for her work and book, and hope that it will make a difference and have patients' drawings become a part of medical training and education. -- Bernie Siegel, MD Through the universal language of images, Joan Drescher offers us a tool to unlock and help children deal with the wide range of often difficult, but always honest feelings that children facing death - their own or that of a loved one - experience. This powerful book reflects Joan's deep commitment to and respect for children and the importance of honoring each child's unique voice and spirit. -- Judy Rollins, PhD, RN A Journey In The Moon Balloon: When Images Speak Louder Than Words offers an uplifting way of making art with children, families, and caregivers, all the more effective in its grounded embrace of the full spectrum of emotions experienced by those facing health challenges and crises. Joan Drescher, a skilled illustrator and pioneer Artist in Residence at the Massachusetts General Hospital, brings considerable credibility to the emerging use of the arts in comprehensive healthcare. In addition to suggestions for initiating artistic expression, the book offers insightful psychological guidance on the creative process and how to help others become engaged in their unique ways. Art therapists and students who are increasingly interested in the process of interactive art making will find this book inspirational. For me personally, Joan Drescher and others like her will hopefully spur on the arts therapy disciplines to create together with artists whose work serves public health and find ways to form a more inclusive community of all who aspire to advance art healing in the world. -- Shaun McNiff, University Professor, Lesley University, author of Art Heals, Integrating the Arts in Therapy, Art-Based Research and Imagination in Action: Secrets for Unleashing Creative Expression This is a beautiful book! A Journey in the Moon Balloon: When Images Speak Louder than Words really empowers the reader to playfully enter the creative realm with grieving children and young people facing life-threatening illnesses... At the heart of Drescher's stunning book is her unflagging respect for children and her belief in the power of love. -- Rob Zucker, MA, LCSW, author of The Journey Through Grief and Loss: Helping Yourself and Your Child When Grief is Shared When words are not enough to ease the pain and sorrow inherent in the human condition, this compendium of insights, techniques and images is an amazing resource. A Journey in the Moon Balloon: When Images Speak Louder than Words belongs on the bedside table of all adults - to be turned to often when called upon to console a child - or the child in all of us. -- Sandra Bertman, PhD, FT, author of Facing Death: Images, Insights & Interventions This book represents the best practices for working with children's emotional issues. A must have for chaplains, professional caregivers, medical practitioners and art therapists, as well as parents. Well researched and easily approachable in its applications. -- Rev. Suzanne Fageol, Spiritual Director and Somatic Trauma Educator

Superb book - great for developing emotional well being and expression By Splashes Into Books This is an absolutely superb interactive book, designed to appeal to children of all ages, encouraging them to use art to help them express their emotions, open themselves to get in touch with their feelings and to help dispose of their fears. It has many colourful pages and also lots of black and white ones for them to colour, illustrate and complete. It was originally developed for use in hospitals but has also proved a great resource in many other situations. It contains examples of how some patients reacted to and used the book and some ideas and techniques that could be used with it.Teachers, I believe this book will prove a great way to help children who have any trauma or worries in their lives to express themselves and their emotions in a meaningful manner. It is certainly something I would have loved to have available to use with children, helping the inarticulate to communicate and express themselves, the less confident share their feelings and start to get rid of their fears, those who are grieving to have an outlet to help them. The examples shared in this book show how it can prove useful - but be prepared to cry when you read some of them! An excellent book for parents, teachers, learning mentors, counsellors and heath professionals alike to help use art therapy techniques to help the emotional well being of children. Simple brilliant! Thanks to the author, publishers and NetGalley, too, for letting me read an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

It can be used by educators, therapists, expressive arts therapists, grief counselors and most importantly by parents. Here is a book that contains wealth of simple yet very effective projects that can open lines of communication and flow of feelings that words can't. A must have for libraries and book shelves everywhere there are children experiencing distress.

Joan Drescher has found a way to help kids communicate and she doesn't stop there. She teaches parents how to utilize the tools to work with kids and thier troubles. Children with illness, mental frustrations, foster children, and just a child at home. It doesn't matter, A Journey in the Moon Balloon When images Speak Louder thn Words is an excellent tool for parents, grandparents, caregivers, or whoever wants to let them know they care and love them. Reviewed through NetGalley and Jessica Kingsley Publishers for an honest review. But I will be getting a hard copy to have on hand.
