The power of putting people first By Pan If ever there was a universal glue that held your life together and gave you the optimal chance of happiness and emotional fulfilment, People’s Centricity is a prime contender. In an expansive journey through personal, professional and commercial relationships, love, loneliness, religion and the everyday pressures of life Stephen Hewett guides the reader through the positive benefits of putting others first.Encouraging us to connect profoundly and meaningfully with the lives of others to achieve manifold beneficial outcomes, Stephen cites a rich vein of references including Charles Dickens, J B Priestley’ enigmatic ‘Inspector’, the Bible, George Bailey’s travails in ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’, Bertrand Russell, and in a particularly powerful section, his own experience of visiting Auschwitz.People Centricity is a principle for the modern age. Where so many pressures on our time and energy to make a living, stay healthy and safe, foster relationships, enjoy leisure activities and family life it is often too easy to neglect others - to withdraw into a narrow focus of our own ‘tribe’. In a clear, non-preaching style, Stephen communicates his passion. He points out that investment of our time in others, with a genuinely positive perspective, will ultimately reap reward for our own futures, happiness and wellbeing.I read People Centricity on a long train journey and would like to think that my perception of my fellow travellers at my starting point of Euston Station was significantly enhanced by the time I stepped off the train in Preston.

By Emma I am not really one to read books of this nature but the tag line 'the incredible power of putting other people first' grabbed my attention. I really liked the style of the book, it was clever and informative but written in a way that makes it easy to understand - the intelligence of the author is not forced at you with incomprehensible gibberish and pretentious nonsense so you get the message and can follow it accordingly. It really has made a difference to how I work day to day and how I engage with people. This is well worth a read and once you have read it get more people to read it as if more of us did this to each other and our customers the world and work would certainly be a better place!

By Nygel If you are looking to be a 'better person' in 2016 then I would recommend Stephen's Book, it's an easy, infectious read that you can either read (as I did) from cover to cover, or you could dip in and out of it to release the stimulating thoughts on how you could...

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. It's Okay By HBR I am a native Gujarati speaker and got this book for my 1.5 year old. He seems to enjoy the book, but my only problem with this book is that the English number is bigger and bolder than the Gujarati number. The left page has both versions of the number. On the top left side is the bigger bolder English number and on the bottom right corner of the page is the Gujarati number. My son's attention is always drawn to the English number, so I have to cover it up with my hand and ask him to read the Gujarati number. I wish the position of the English and the Gujarati numbers were switched.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. format issues By Ammie The book is great but why did the format become so confusing on the Kindle version? Yes I like the convenience of being able to click on whatever I want to read from the Table of contents but I HATE how Kindle removed the indentations! Outlines are meant to be for easy fast reading. But this Kindle version removed all of it making the entire book disorganized. Look at the preview of the EBOOK or KINDLE version before even thinking about buying it and you'll see what I'm talking about!I have the 2013 version and I might as well stick with that...

It's a good review for students, new grads, and even practicing nurses needing quick points or a brief refresher. That being said, I have found a few typographical errors. I don't see errors in content but the typos make it seem like a less professional and polished textbook.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A good cure for writer's block By Frank I write speculative fiction and there are days when I need something to spur my creative process. I own several books of writing prompts but this one is unique in its presentation. Instead of just a sentence or two, each prompt also contains a related quote and picture or illustration. I think this is an excellent idea and find it much more inspiring than a page full of one liners. I recommend this book to any writer especially those who, like me, get stuck for an idea.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Inspiration comes in many forms... By TolkienFan All writers have blocks. And all SUCCESSFUL writers learn to overcome them. It was in my early writing that I discovered the truth in that statement. I came to the world of fiction late. Not really certain why, but I admit to being mostly a technical writer. SOPs, grants, operator manuals, maintenance manuals ... it didn't matter. If it needed writing, I wrote it. I moved on to writing online study courses and newspaper columns. Then fiction raised its head and I fell into the gaping maw of uncertainty. That's the way it goes. The transformation from tightly structured, rigid, stilted words to smooth, carefully crafted, flowing prose was not easy and indeed is not yet complete. One of the toughest things to do is generate ideas and confine them to the written page while allowing them to run freeform through the reader's stream of consciousness and still maintain a semblance of form acceptable to "normal" convention. I am not happy where I am in this process. So, when I was shown this book I decided to make a run at "improving the improvisation" and settled in to read and discover what I didn't know.If you are not a writer (or a prospective writer..) you will probably wonder what this is all about. But even if you stumble on this book by accident, there is still something here for you. You don't have to take part in the writing exercises to gain something from this book. If you just read the quotes and study the images, you will have received more than that for which you paid. On the other hand, if you ARE a writer you have in your hands a book of quotes and ideas that stimulate and excite. Ideas that once consumed tend to percolate and cause just enough internal agitation to make you want to sit down and write something. There are no characters here. No plot lines or back stories. Just ideas. Ideas for characters and ideas for plots and ideas for settings. Ideas for stories that need to be written. But that's not all you get....More than the ideas presented, I think the most valuable part of this book are the quotes at the start of each of the exercises. It is an impressive collection. Some of them are old favorites and bring to mind either soothing memories or discordant ones. Others are new and create no such memories but rather pleasant feelings of discovery. No matter which camp you find yourself in, the quotes will serve you well.If you read this book, and moreover if you take part in some of the exercises, you will find yourself in a much improved place and state of mind. Your mind will be more flexible and ready to bend and mold characters and themes into plots and stories. If you go with it and allow yourself to fully participate, you will gain insight and stimulation and clarity of thought. These things, and others, necessary for the creative pursuit of improvisational fiction.HIGHLY recommended.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Like me, you might find many worlds and ideas for stories along with gorgeous and horrid illustrations. THRILLING! By Rob Natiuk Aw, shucks! Now, after reading this book and highlighting dozens of passages, I have another 30 or so book and story ideas to write about. There's no way I'll get to them all. But what a creative joy it was to go through such an inspirational read. The author says, "Speculative fiction allows us to go to where the magic is." That's where I like to go, at least for some life-endowing moments. Because "...these stories must ultimately reconnect us to our humanity."So many quotes are so beautiful, or scary -- sometimes the same thing. Take this one: "Ms. Fang is the nicest, sweetest teacher at Scary School. She only ate twelve kids last year." (Derek the Ghost, Scary School). "The last unicorn lived in a lilac wood and she lived all alone." (Peter S. Beagle, The Last Unicorn.) Such a line goes right into the core of something inside me. "All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream." (Edgar Allan Poe.)So what do I have here to roil my imagination? 167 quotes like the above, with 167 writing prompts giving me concepts for stories, and 167 photos and art pieces -- and so many are overwhelming in their beauty, or horror, or nostalgia, or driving within me a need to become a part of the fantastic world protrayed.I HAVE ONE QUESTION: Why are all the women, even the evil ones, in these photos so gol-darned beautiful, enticing and, yes, even sexy? But that gives me a concept for another story. This one might be called: "A Hollywood Icon Falls in Love with the Ugliest Woman in the Universe."

Corporate lobbyists are everywhere in Washington. Of the 100 organizations that spend the most on lobbying, 95 represent business. The largest companies now have upwards of 100 lobbyists representing them. How did American businesses become so invested in politics? And what does all their money buy?Drawing on extensive data and original interviews with corporate lobbyists, The Business of America is Lobbying provides a fascinating and detailed picture of what corporations do in Washington, why they do it, and why it matters. Prior to the 1970s, very few corporations had Washington offices. But a wave of new government regulations and declining economic conditions mobilized business leaders. Companies developed new political capacities, and managers soon began to see public policy as an opportunity, not just a threat. Ever since, corporate lobbying has become increasingly more pervasive, more proactive, and more particularistic. Lee Drutman argues that lobbyists drove this development, helping managers to see why politics mattered, and how proactive and aggressive engagement could help companies' bottom lines. All this lobbying doesn't guarantee influence. Politics is a messy and unpredictable bazaar, and it is more competitive than ever. But the growth of lobbying has driven several important changes that make business more powerful. The status quo is harder to dislodge; policy is more complex; and, as Congress increasingly becomes a farm league for K Street, more and more of Washington's policy expertise now resides in the private sector. These and other changes increasingly raise the costs of effective lobbying to a level only businesses can typically afford.Lively and engaging, rigorous and nuanced, The Business of America is Lobbying will change how we think about lobbying-and how we might reform it.

The Business of America is Lobbying: How Corporations Became Politicized and Politics Became More Corporate (Studies in Postwar American Political Development), by Lee Drutman

Review "With careful research and an unflinching eye for telling detail, Lee Drutman shows beyond any doubt how big money is strangling our democracy, and why the rest of us must take action before its last gasp. A vitally important book everyone who cares about America must read." -- Robert B. Reich, Chancellor's Professor of Public Policy, University of California, Berkeley, and former U.S. Secretary of Labor

"Why do corporations lobby? How much do they spend to sway the federal government? Lee Drutman amassed the data to answer these hard questions and many others, including the hardest of all: what has lobbying done to American democracy?" -David Frum, senior editor, The Atlantic

"The ever-rising amount that corporate America spends to shape government policy is hard to ignore-except, it seems, in American political science. Now, finally, we have a meticulous, innovative, yet remarkably readable analysis of the post-1970s lobbying boom: why it happened, how it feeds on itself, and how it is reshaping American politics. This book is likely to start a boom of its own, forcing political science to grapple with its fresh findings and powerful new arguments." -- Jacob S. Hacker, Stanley B. Resor Professor of Political Science, Yale University, and co-author of Winner-Take-All Politics

"Drutman's description of corporate lobbying, standing alone, is worth the price of admission. But he pairs this empirical work with sound judgment, sensible policy proposals, and a clear-eyed view of the world. It's an irresistible combination." -- Heather K. Gerken, J. Skelly Wright Professor of Law, Yale Law School

"In the most impressive compilation of new data and analysis on corporate relations with the US government ever completed, Lee Drutman's painstaking and comprehensive study shows clearly how important individual corporations are in the federal lobbying game. At the same time, he shows just how dependent corporate leaders are on their government relations staff for knowledge about the value of the work of that very staff; how corporate lobbying is often as ineffective as it is self-perpetuating; and how it raises the cost of democracy for everyone. This will be seen for years as the best book on corporate lobbying in America and should be read by everyone with concern about how our government really works."--Frank R. Baumgartner, Richard J. Richardson Distinguished Professor of Political Science, UNC-Chapel Hill, and co-author of Lobbying and Policy Change

"Drutman's book is a must-read for all who are concerned about the influence-peddling game. It alerts us to this growing threat to democracy itself, and it intrigues us to search for solutions." --Craig Holman, Public Citizen News

"...let me stress how edifying and entertaining I found The Business of America Is Lobbying. Anyone interested in gaining a better understanding of business, politics, and the growing intersection between the two should read Lee Drutman's book." --Matthew Mitchell, George Mason University

"Drutman presents one of the more thoughtful analyses of lobbying in America that has been made so far." --Jeff Madrick, The New York Review of Books

Accessible, Analytical Look at Corporate Lobbying By Book Shark The Business of America is Lobbying: How Corporations Became Politicized and Politics Became More Corporate by Lee Drutman“The Business of America is Lobbying” is a book about what lobbying involves and how it operates. Research fellow, professor with a Ph.D. in political science, Lee Drutman takes a professional approach and argues quite convincingly that corporate lobbying has reached its current persuasive position largely because lobbying has its own internal momentum. Lobbying begets lobbying. This straightforward 288-page book includes the following ten chapters: 1. The Pervasive Position of Business, 2. Why the Growth of Corporate Lobbying Matters, 3. The Growth of Corporate Lobbying, 4. How and Why Corporations Lobby, 5. How Corporations Cooperate and Compete, 6. How Corporations Make Sense of Politics, 7. How Lobbyists Perpetuate Lobbying, 8. Testing Alternative Explanations for Growth, 9. The Stickiness of Lobbying, and 10. The Business of America is Lobbying.Positives:1. A well-researched and well-referenced book.2. An important topic that surprisingly doesn’t get as much attention as it deserves, the influence of lobbying in American politics.3. A very good format. Each chapter clearly states what is expected and ends with a conclusion.4. Takes a professional, analytical approach. Plenty of charts that complement the accessible narrative.5. Clearly states the main goals of the book. “This book, by contrast, is far more focused on the self-perpetuating nature of political engagement, and the ways in which, once it gets started, organizational lobbying deepens and expands over time.”6. Explains the why of lobbying. “…if corporate managers think that lobbying will help their company’s bottom line, then they will lobby. If not, then they won’t lobby.”7. No shortage of numbers. “In 2012, politically active organizations reported $3.31 billion in direct lobbying expenses, down slightly from $3.55 billion in 2010 but up significantly from $1.82 billion just 10 years earlier and, controlling for inflation, almost seven times the estimated $200 million in lobbying expenses in 1983.”8. Explains the what of lobbying. “I define lobbying quite broadly to mean any activity oriented towards shaping public policy outcomes, and I make the reasonable assumption that all corporate political activity is oriented towards shaping public policy outcomes.”9. Explains how the growth of corporate lobbying influences policymaking. Makes the compelling case that growth of corporate lobbying has altered the policymaking environment in eight ways that are largely interconnected.10. Explains why legislation is much more complex. “On the Affordable Care Act, 1,483 unique organizations lobbied on the bill.” “Policy complexity is valuable for those seeking to extract rents from government because it makes it hard to see just who is benefitting and how.”11. A look at the history of corporate lobbying. “The most direct strike at corporate political influence was the 1907 Tillman Act, which banned direct corporate contributions to candidates.” “Several pharmaceutical lobbyists described the 1993–1994 healthcare debate as a wake-up political moment for industry, an observation that fits with empirical evidence showing that the number of healthcare companies with a Washington lobbying presence almost doubled between 1992 and 1994.”12. A look at the various tactics of lobbying. “…changing the status quo requires more work than preserving the status quo.” “…informing clients and bosses about developments in Washington is a key part of what lobbyists do. So it is not surprising that, no matter the strategic approach, collecting information is always a part of it.”13. Some revelations exposed. “Companies simply devote much more of their resources to lobbying than they do to campaign finance.”14. Explores the role of trade associations versus lobbying by companies. “If most lobbying is done through associations, it suggests more cohesiveness in the lobbying community. If most lobbying is done through companies, it suggests more divisiveness in the lobbying community, with more companies focused on their own concerns.”15. There is business philosophy spruced throughout the book. “The more managers (and people in general) understand cause-effect relationships, the more they tend to perceive their environment as controllable.”16. Explores the perspective of corporate managers. “With more information and experience, managers can better develop more realistic policy goals.” “Corporate managers are not particularly savvy about politics.”17. Explores three alternative hypotheses on how lobbyists perpetuate lobbying. “(1) lobbying grew because government got bigger; (2) lobbying grew because government devoted more attention to issues companies care about; (3) lobbying grew because companies got bigger.”18. Provides empirical support for his theory that lobbying is sticky. Find out…19. A look at the future of lobbying and what we can do to curtail its influence, albeit limited. Proposes three types of solutions.20. Notes included.Negatives:1. More brains than heart. The book makes use of cold hard facts to the detriment of passion. Emotions play a pivotal role in our decision-making process and this book unfortunately strips the heart of such an important component. In short, I wanted a dose of passion into the mix.2. As with most books of this ilk, the disease is better explored than the cure. The focus is clearly on what constitutes lobbying instead of what we can do as citizens to curtail its negative effects.3. It’s a well written, professional book but it’s at times a dry read. Some folks will shy away from the statistical analysis. In defense of the author, I considered the charts helpful but it’s not for everyone and may have been better placed in an appendix.4. The author seems restrained. It’s as if the author did not want to offend anyone. Some of it’s understandable but it comes at a price.5. A missed opportunity to explore the damage caused by corporate lobbying to average citizens. In summary, this is a solid, workman-like analytical look at corporate lobbying for the general public. The author succeeds at proving his case that lobbying begets lobbying. The book however is a bit dry and leaves some topics on the table that would have taken it to a higher level. I was expecting more and was little disappointed that the author didn’t pursue the damage done by corporate lobbying. Overall, a good book, I recommend it.Further recommendations: “Lobbying America” by Benjamin C. Waterhouse, “Corruption in America” by Zephyr Teachout, “Winner-Take-All Politics” by Jacob S. Hacker, “The Price of Inequality” and “Globalization and its Discontents” by Joseph E. Stiglitz, “Affluence and Influence” by Martin Gilens, “Republic, Lost” by Lawrence Lessig, “The New Elite” by Dr. Jim Taylor, “Why Nations Fail” by Daron Acemoglu, “ECONned” by Yves Smith, “The Great Divergence” by Timothy Noah, and “Bailout” by Neil Barofsky.

This is one of the best books I’ve read in a while. It really opened my eyes.. Admittedly, it’s a bit wonky in parts, and there’s A LOT of data, but Drutman is a very good and very clear writer and is quite smart about things. And the guy has done his homework. Having read it, I feel like I know understand a lot more about how lobbying works and just how much of it there is. It isn't a pretty picture, but it’s an important one.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A Vital Book at a Pivotal Moment By Clay Risen The role of lobbyists in the policymaking process is the open, dirty secret of Washington. We pay a lot of attention to partisan politics and ideological battles, and to the big-name elected and appointed figures in Washington. But even close followers of the news media can be forgiven for their ignorance regarding the real driving force behind so much of what happens in the capital: the billions of dollars spent on for-profit lobbying. Fortunately, we now have Lee Drutman's book to clarify and elucidate this overlooked fourth branch of the American politic system. His book should be required reading for anyone concerned about where American policy making is today, and where it is headed.

My daughter already knows all her animals in English and I wanted to start teaching her Hindi, so this is perfect timing. The book has the hindi alphabet on one page, a picture of the animal on the next page along with the pronounciation in hindi and english. It's a bit pricey but I guess if I had one shipped from India, it would cost the same.My main problem with this book is the pictures of the animals. I don't know how to describe the style..I guess its a mix of ethinc and modern...but some of them are dificult to recognize. If my kid can't recognize that the picture is a dog then how do I teach her the hindi word for it?But, overall I like the book and hope to see more in this series.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. cute By snoofle I purchased this and the Bindi baby hindi animals book for a one year olds birthday. The parents LOVED it and overall, its a great basic book to teach your little one. My only issue was that my books had these weird lines going through the pages where ink/color was missing on the pages. Minor issue, but still annoying given that I purchased both books in the brand.

The name of the animal is written in very big script in Devanagari and Roman script. There is also the first letter of each animal in Devanagari printed really big on the facing page. On the last page there's the whole Devanagari alphabet written out with the equivalent Roman letters. This is great because it means that if you want to teach Devanagari script as well as animal names, it's easy to do with this book. My son has even started teaching himself some letters from this book and he's learnt all the animal names from it already. The problem with such stylised pictures is it's sometimes not immediately recognisable to the child what animal it is, although my son seems to do fine with it apart from not being able to tell apart the tiger and the cat. But despite this it's an amazing book, it's one of my favourites.

Wislawa Szymborska's poems are admired around the world, and her unsparing vision, tireless wit, and deep sense of humanity are cherished by countless readers. Unknown to most of them, however, Szymborska also worked for several decades as a columnist, reviewing a wide variety of books under the unassuming title "Nonrequired Reading."As readers of her poems would expect, the short prose pieces collected here are anything but ordinary. Reflecting the author's own eclectic tastes and interests, the pretexts for these ruminations range from books on wallpapering, cooking, gardening, and yoga, to more lofty volumes on opera and world literature. Unpretentious yet incisive, these charming pieces are on a par with Szymborska's finest lyrics, tackling the same large and small questions with a wonderful curiosity.

Nonrequired Reading: Prose Pieces, by Wislawa Szymborska

From Publishers Weekly Szymborska's Nobel Prize for literature in 1996 recognized her achievement in poetry. This collection of short prose responses ("I couldn't write reviews and didn't even want to") to 94 books proves a luminous and inspiring set of readerly reports-sharp, digressive, joyous-that provide insight into the poet's process of intake and synthesis. The pieces don't so much describe the books in question as take off from them, riffing and meditating on their contents. "The world is full of all sorts of sleeping powers-but how can you know in advance which may be safely released and which should be kept under lock at all costs?" she asks after reading Karel Capek's 1936 novel The War with the Newts, a sort of 1984 meets The Lord of the Flies. "One hundred minutes for your own beauty? Every day? You can't always indulge in such luxuries, my dear vain, dizzy, professionally employed, married friend with children," is her wry response to One Hundred Minutes for Beauty by Zofia Wedrowska, fourth edition, Warsaw: Sport I Turystyka, 1978. "We all know that a gesture repeated too often grows trite and loses its deeper meaning," she writes of Kathleen Keating's A Little Book of Hugs, but notes that "Miss Keating is an American, and enthusiasm comes to her more easily." Readers will find it comes just as easily to them via this varied collection by a keen reader and thinker.Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal Unknown to most Americans until she won the 1996 Nobel Prize in literature, Polish writer Szymborska is primarily a poet. This collection of short prose pieces features book reviews she wrote while working as a columnist. Addressing a wide range of subjects, from the ancient Romans to the modern-day handyman, the reviews reflect her eclectic tastes and poetic sensibility. Unafraid to take an unpopular position, she, as a smoker, complains about the American penchant for demonizing anyone who cannot break the habit. In another piece, she reviews a book on early medical practices, pointing out that Louis XIV must have had an unusually resilient constitution to withstand the 2000 enemas and numerous bloodlettings to which he was subjected. On a weightier note, she tackles the question of why some civilizations succeed while others do not, given that humanity started out more or less the same. The skillful simplicity and lyric quality of these essays make them distinctive. With her poet's gift for compression, Szymborska captures large concepts and brilliantly reduces them to pithy, two-page essays. Strongly recommended for public and academic libraries.--Nancy R. Ives, SUNY at GeneseoCopyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist Like many writers who survived the horrors of World War II, and in the case of Eastern European and Russian poets, Stalinism, Nobel laureate Szymborska insists on clarity and directness in her writing, and evinces, too, a ready wit and a wholly personal point of view. Her poetry is treasured the world over, but unbeknownst to most American readers, Szymborska is also a literary columnist, and several decades' worth of her brilliantly arch and pithy essays are deftly translated and gathered in this pleasurable volume in all their vivacious unpredictability and radiant intelligence. Refusing to do the dutiful work of a reviewer or critic, Szymborska freely revels in reading books, which she describes as "the most glorious pastime that humankind has yet devised." Following her fancy, Szymborska writes with verve and imagination about books on plate tectonics, wallpaper, birds, gladiators, Vermeer, Ella Fitzgerald, hugs, plants, and our "cosmic solitude" as the only planet fizzing with life. Szymborska enters each essay at an oblique and thrillingly subversive angle, and exits with a dazzling flourish, having coolly yet profoundly altered her readers' perceptions. They were from her newspaper column of 30+ years ago, "Nonrequired Reading". They are the musings on everyday books and subjects. It is a wide ranging and eclectic collection. There will be one essay on a touching Korean fable. Then, the next will be on how to make a reptile aquarium. Many of these essays were book reviews. However, they are more her thoughts on the subjects than reviews. When I say this book is like a "box of chocolates" it is in the Gumpian sense of the word. You never know what you're going to get and it will be interesting no matter what the topic. The aforementioned reptile aquarium piece was not only interesting but, philosophical as well. That the book was from a translation was not a problem. Ms. Cavanaugh, the tranlator, was the winner of the PEN Translator prize. Reading this, it seems to have travelled without a problem. For those buying this book: please read it! Do not put it on your coffee table to show off your erudition of having a Nobel Prize winning author's book so prominently on display. There is too much enjoyment to be had by reading this book. The essays are from one page to a page and a half in length. Hopefully, there will be more essays to come in the future.

9 of 11 people found the following review helpful. required reading By happy warrior I love the sweep. Szymborska can make any topic fascinating. She finds deep and homey lessons in a broad range of topics. And of course, she's a real writer.

7 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Not Enough for this fan! By Sylviastel I love Wislawa Szymborska. Although I am not a fan of poetry in general, I began reading this book of her thoughts and feelings and criticisms which are never vicious, cruel, or even negative. She finds something positive about everytyhing from Ella Fitzgerald to Alfred Hitchcock and many other subjects about books. I think there is a fascination with this woman because she is a NObel Prize winner for literature in 1996 and from Poland. She is the first Polish woman to receive such an honor. She is quite humble about such honors. We know little about her life. We know she has a sister. She might be a widow and she has no children. She is a smoker and lives in a three room flat in Cracow where she has lived since her family moved there. Wislawa has now popularity because of her top honors for her services to literature. I would love to read a biography or autobiography about her. I loved her story about her relationship with another Polish Nobel prizewinner and fellow poet, Czeslaw Milosz. As long as there are writers like Wislawa around, we can be sure that she is not done yet.

Best Ebook PDF Guide to the Vascular Plants of Tennessee, by Edward W. Chester, S. Eugene Wofford, Joey Shaw, Dwayne Estes, David H. Webb

The product of twenty-five years of planning, research, and writing, Guide to the Vascular Plants of Tennessee is the most comprehensive, detailed, and up-to-date resource of its kind for the flora of the Volunteer State, home to nearly 2,900 documented taxa. Not since Augustin Gattinger's 1901 Flora of Tennessee and a Philosophy of Botany has a work of this scope been attempted. The team of editors, authors, and contributors not only provide keys for identifying the major groups, families, genera, species, and lesser taxa known to be native or naturalized within the state--with supporting information about distribution, frequency of occurrence, conservation status, and more--but they also offer a plethora of descriptive information about the state's physical environment and vegetation, along with a summary of its rich botanical history, dating back to the earliest Native American inhabitants. Other features of the book include a comprehensive glossary of botanical terms and an array of line drawings that illustrate the identifying characteristics of vascular plants, from leaf shape and surface features to floral morphology and fruit types. Finally, the book's extensive keys are indexed by families, scientific names, and common names. The result is a user-friendly work that researchers, students, environmentalists, foresters, conservationists, and indeed anyone interested in Tennessee and its botanical legacy and resources will value for years to come.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Tennessee Treasure By Quality_Seeker An excellent piece of work, filling a long-felt need and finally placing botanically rich Tennessee among the states with a comprehensive, up-to-date plant identification manual. It is obvious that much care went into the preparation of this book, which offers every conceivable help to the field botanist. Though there are a few minor flaws, the keys are lucid and practical throughout. For some genera, alternate keys and species concepts are given so that the user can find the best solution to an identification problem. Extensive synonymy is provided in the species entries, and in the scientific-name index (a separate, and unusually good, common name index is also included). The introductory essays, covering Tennessee's geological and vegetational regions, and the history of botanical study in the state, are absolutely first-rate, and worth the price the volume by themselves, in my opinion. My only criticism of the work is a tendency to be a little too free with the terms "common" and "rare". For instance, I am loathe to believe that Senecio vulgaris is "rare" anywhere. Every botanically minded Tennessean will want this book.

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great book for a wildflower photographer By George Wallace Great book for a wildflower photographer. Really helps me identify wildflowers here in Tennessee and especially the wildflowers that are endemic to the Cedar Glade. I am sure others will find this book very useful, especially if you are a botanist.

2 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Probably great for research of some kind By red.spqr Ordered this to help me identify plants in my area. Was not at all helpful. All the time and effort put into this book you think they would have included photos of the plants, or at least a drawing. This is highly technical and scientific. Probably great for research of some kind, but not at all helpful in identifying plants. This book will be donated to my local library where hopefully someone can get some use out of it.
