Selected by Guernica magazine as an "Editors’ Picks: Best of 2013"Unfurling like a medieval book of days, each page of Eduardo Galeano’s Children of the Days has an illuminating story that takes inspiration from that date of the calendar year, resurrecting the heroes and heroines who have fallen off the historical map, but whose lives remind us of our darkest hours and sweetest victories.Challenging readers to consider the human condition and our own choices, Galeano elevates the little-known heroes of our world and decries the destruction of the intellectual, linguistic, and emotional treasures that we have all but forgotten.Readers will discover many inspiring narratives in this collection of vignettes: the Brazilians who held a “smooch-in” to protest against a dictatorship for banning kisses that “undermined public morals”; the astonishing day Mexico invaded the United States; and the “sacrilegious” women who had the effrontery to marry each other in a church in the Galician city of A Coruña in 1901. Galeano also highlights individuals such as Pedro Fernandes Sardinha, the first bishop of Brazil, who was eaten by Caeté Indians off the coast of Alagoas, as well as Abdul Kassem Ismael, the grand vizier of Persia, who kept books safe from war by creating a walking library of 117,000 tomes aboard four hundred camels, forming a mile-long caravan.Beautifully translated by Galeano’s longtime collaborator, Mark Fried, Children of the Days is a majestic humanist treasure that shows us how to live and how to remember. It awakens the best in us.

Children of the Days: A Calendar of Human History, by Eduardo Galeano

From Booklist We are the children of the days—that is, of time, earth, and the way we transform life into stories. Uruguayan writer Galeano, whose numerous international prizes include the Lannan Prize for Cultural Freedom, takes measure of our collective history, as he did in Mirrors (2009). But here he creates a universal calendar of commemoration that circles the globe, spans centuries, and encompasses war, earthquakes, dictatorships, crimes, heroism, and discoveries. Issac Newton, a man “fearful” of intimacy, nonetheless discerns “the earth’s irresistible force of attraction”; in a later era, a German hairdresser invents the permanent wave. Geronimo took charge of the Apache resistance in the nineteenth century; in the twenty-first century, the U.S. government killed Osama bin Laden in Operation Geronimo. This date-anchored human chronicle succinctly reflects our species’ vast diversity of temperaments, gifts, failings, and afflictions. As profound as Galeano’s concerns are, as penetrating as is his knowledge, he is mischievous and agile in each of the vivid 365 sketches, which distill to provocative effect vast reaches of experience and consequence, irony and tragedy, suffering and transcendence. --Donna Seaman

Review “Children of the Days is a book to dip into; less a narrated history than a compendium of oddments. His writing is full of candour, empathy, humane concern and also predictable convictions…Herein lies Galeano’s central appeal: he evokes the marvels of a remarkable world that is not so bad after all.”Financial Times“The stories themselves, broken into pieces, present both Galeano's aesthetic and his view of history. The portrait of memory as fragmentary and non-linear reproduces the reality of ageing. At the same time, the shattering of the past into pieces offers a textual embodiment of broken pasts. The impact of this literary approach to the history of violent disappearances is a lasting and universal one.”The Independent (UK)“The arrival of a new book by one of our great writers is always an event…. You might think of his latest volume as a prayer book for our time: a page a day for 365 days focused on what’s most human and beautiful, as well as what’s most grasping and exploitative, on this small, crowded planet of ours. I would be urging all of you to celebrate the event and buy copies under any circumstances.”Tom Engelhardt, TomDispatch"Bedtime stories, you remember? This is a book of stories for each day of the year, addressed to adults. Stories of the historical human venture. Each story half a page. Put it beside your bed and the bed of those you love."John Berger"Engaging."The Times of London (UK)"Eduardo Galeano's winningly eccentric Children of the Days: A Calendar of Human History is packed with enough rogues and history changers to last a lifetime."Vanity Fair, Hot Type"With each passing day, details of an important event-or one lost to history's selective memory-illuminate the humanity and barbarism of our species. Good and evil, beauty and ugliness, generosity and greed-all are juxtaposed to great effect.... [T]his is a heady portrait of the human story rendered in broad, though no less incisive and affecting, strokes."Publishers Weekly"Galeano's many readers will surely find this secular calendar appealing."Kirkus Reviews"Eduardo Galeano is the great master of fragments and splinters, a prince of the absurdly truthful. Children of the Days, his Calendar of Human History, is an immensely varied gathering of facts and oddments and truths and stories of every kind. Underlying them all is a passionate and humane concern for the underdog, the poor, the forgotten. How this can be so funny and at the same time so moving is a great mystery."Philip Pullman"What category to put our beloved poet-historian, historian-poet in? Galeano is truly a Scheherazade. He keeps me morally awake, while also lifting my spirits with his ability to reveal in story-form the deep, sweet humanity which rebounds even after the cruelest moments of history. Reading Galeano, I'm often reminded of Joseph Conrad's claims for what writing should do: 'art itself may be defined as a single-minded attempt to render the highest kind of justice to the visible universe, by bringing to light the truth, manifold and one, underlying its every aspect.' That is reason enough to stay morally awake!"Julia Alvarez"In retrieving these stories from their historical exile, Galeano redeems their dignity and reanimates their tale. More than the mere act of commemoration alone, these vignettes illume the dark and disregarded corners of our collective past (and act, perhaps, as bulwark against repeating its myriad misdeeds).... Eduardo Galeano composes prose as resplendent as some of his subjects are sorrowful. With ever the eye for the neglected, distressed, oppressed, and maligned (spanning thousands of years), he creates beauty where once there was betrayal, and intrigue where ignorance once thrived. From the familiar to the obscure, Galeano masterfully recollects and rescues from amnesiac disregard those for whom history has never made room.... Galeano makes an offering of his art so that we may yet be reminded of the inherent brilliance, dignity, and wonder of a life consumed not by belligerence, fanaticism, and the shallow pursuit of wealth but one that is instead receptive to the voices of others and the world at large."Powells.com"Even when his subjects are familiar, Galeano's conclusions are always surprising...A modern book of days celebrating forgotten moments of our collective, multicultural past."Shelf Awareness"Galeano is as damning of humanity as he is hopeful for it, packing varied historical reflection into a calendar year. His condensed history is, like life, at once dark and fascinating, sad yet uplifting."The Observer (UK) "Eduardo Galeano's Children of the Days: A Calendar of Human History is another impressive work of cogent and creative insight from a prophet who opens our eyes to the world as it is and as it could be if more of us would fight for peace, justice, and human equality."Spirituality & Practice"Galeano's genre is his own - a mixture of fiction, journalism and history that, as always, is conveyed in orderly fragments of various sizes and is best understood as an outgrowth of his first midteen self-expressions as a socialist cartoonist. If you think of every short individual Galeano piece in the mammoth collection of them that comprises his life's work as a kind of verbal cartoon - or a set of variations on a verbal cartoon - then you understand both the striking singularity of his work and its innovation...Galeano's fire is unquenched. He keeps giving it to us in abundance."Buffalo News"It's May, but this is a Christmas kind of a book: giftable, covetable, hefty, handsome, a veritable plum pudding of a thing, its lovely midnight-blue cover designed to look as though dotted with stars, or perhaps dusted with sugar, and slathered all over with generous custardy recommendations from both Philip Pullman and John Berger... Galeano chronicles events and anniversaries from the history of oppressed nations, adding the odd dash of fictional fun and philosophical musing... The effect is dizzying, like staring up close for a very long time at the walls of Gaudí's Sagrada Família...Children of the Days is the ne plus ultra of the Galeano style and form, a triumph of his mosaic art - 365 sad and strange and shiny little fragments, placed adjacent to one another to form a vast and seemingly coherent whole...This is a book of days, not for every day but for any day."The Guardian"Compelling, enlightening, tragic, hopeful, and hypnotic book: history in poetic snapshots... There are great stories in the book, pain and injustice too. And there is hope."Chicago Tribune"I think there is a strength within Latin American literature that resists the gusting of that stale wind. Authors like Gabriel Garcia Marquez and poets like Pablo Neruda hide within their respective voices a kind of power that seems refreshingly untouched by that wind's sapping flow. Eduardo Galeano is one of these. Already a distinguished presence within Latin American literature, Galeano's Children of the Days speaks with that power that seems often so illusive in other spheres of literature. This is the power I speak of: the ability to unleash your words to reveal the innermost truth of yourself. His words carry a blunt sincerity reminiscent of Marquez's short stories - amusing, thoughtful, and scathingly critical, often all within the same sentence. With each page of Children of the Days, Galeano reveals himself anew, and challenges us to do the same... Children of the Days is many things. It is a reminder, a chance for introspection, a forgotten history, a critique and a call to arms... All of the days in Galeano's Calendar are poetry in the finest sense. His words weave surprise into the ordinary, and dig truth from the rubble of those who would hide it. Even translated to English they retain a rough rhythm as the line breaks push singular ideas from the page... Children of the Days is best read in pieces, perhaps day by day, as a reminder that we are inheritors of history both grand and foul. The way that we choose to live our lives each day will determine which side of our history we will fall on. Eduardo Galeano's clear voice propels us to sincerity. If we were to listen, maybe we could stand against stale winds as well as he."The Englewood Review of Books"The amazing Galeano has done it again. History becomes poetry, and mythology becomes politic."San Francisco Chronicle

About the Author Eduardo Galeano is one of Latin America’s most distinguished writers. He is the author of the three-volume Memory of Fire; Open Veins of Latin America; Soccer in Sun and Shadow; The Book of Embraces; Walking Words; Upside Down; and Voices in Time. Born in Montevideo in 1940, he lived in exile in Argentina and Spain for years before returning to Uruguay. His work has been translated into twenty-eight languages. He is recipient of many international prizes, including the first Lannan Prize for Cultural Freedom, the Casa de las Américas Prize, and the First Distinguished Citizen of the region by the countries of Mercosur.

Such short snippets for each day of the year. It works and Eduardo has managed to produce a minor masterpiece of profound insights, vision, and historical perspective that is unique in my experience. I suggest that anyone even slightly interested in understanding the human condition throughout history give the book a try.

Each day is marked with a story, many are quite shameful and tell of great cruelty. Many are winsome such as a law that once banned male and female authors on the same shelf. Some are just lovely such as the fact that babies are soothed by Mozart. "This is your new home. And this is how it sounds.Galea no is thrifty with words using short vignettes to make the point of each day. It seems just as I would feel so defiled to call myself human, he would add a day speaking of the lyricism of the human spirit. This is a somewhat quirky way to tell of our journey through time, but one filled with many occasions of an answering chord.

While I said I loved it, my reason has more to do with Galeano's beautiful writing and piercing, penetrating accounts of historical events that shaped life as we know it today and hopefully makes us all think about our actions and our contributions to life today.

In the past fifty years scientists have begun to discover how the human brain functions. In this book Wilder Penfield, whose work has been at the forefront of such research, describes the current state of knowledge about the brain and asks to what extent recent findings explain the action of the mind. He offers the general reader a glimpse of exciting discoveries usually accessible to only a few scientists.

He writes: "Throughout my own scientific career I, like other scientists, have struggled to prove that the brain accounts for the mind. But perhaps the time has come when we may profitably consider the evidence as it stands, and ask the question...Can the mind be explained by what is now known about the brain?"

The central question, he points out, is whether man's being is determined by his body alone or by mind and body as separate elements. Before suggesting an answer, he gives a fascinating account of his experience as a neurosurgeon and scientist observing the brain in conscious patients.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating findings By Linda Edgington I found Wilder Penfield's research with epileptic patients, fascinating. Reading his accounts of subjects responding to his "poking around" in their brains inspired me to read on. I was amazed that such poking could cause the recollection of detailed memories or the bodies of his subjects to react consistent with the area poked. It is remarkable that this brain surgeon was so puzzled by the fact that he could find no "record" in the brain of decision-making. His analogy of a "programmer" for the "computer/brain," gave even more data to the assumption of a "spirit" that resides in a person until death. I found it a reinforcement of what I already believe, but also surprising that a physician, who was not intending to propose such a hypothesis, came to such a conclusion. The book is very interesting reading for anyone who is interested in the workings of the brain or who is inquisitive about the existence of a "spirit" or a "mind" in human beings.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Renee, RN (USA) By Renee, RN I found Penfield's writing about the "mind" and "spirit" to be fascinating. Scientists know what part of the brain is responsible for things like speech, sight, memory, sight, hearing, movement, etc. But what makes humans act and think the way we do? What is responsible for thought, reasoning, conscience, and those things that cant be measured? He describes the brain to be like a "computer that needs to be programmed". I found all his writing to be very interesting and informative. Some of the medical information was over my head as a lay person. But as a former patient of Montreal Neurological Hospital who had this very surgery while Awake for epilepsy, it brought back many memories of how they "poked" around in my brain and it created sensations in various areas of my body. For anyone interested in how the brain and mind work, this is an easy to read, interesting book. Like Dr. Feindel says in the introduction:" the brain is the most organized structure in the universe".

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Thoughtful perspective By Deborah P. Hume I enjoyed reading this book. It was not too complex or too detailed for the lay person. It was an honest and thoughtful perspective of a neurosurgeon who asks questions philosophically regarding the origin and energy source with regard to the mind. The brain is an organic structure that functions much like a computer. The mind is more like the programmer. His first hand experience of working with patients with epilepsy and the responses of these when electrical stimulation was applied to various regions of the brain help to support his premise.

Discover why and how schools must become places where thinking is valued, visible, and actively promoted

As educators, parents, and citizens, we must settle for nothing less than environments that bring out the best in people, take learning to the next level, allow for great discoveries, and propel both the individual and the group forward into a lifetime of learning. This is something all teachers want and all students deserve. In Creating Cultures of Thinking: The 8 Forces We Must Master to Truly Transform Our Schools, Ron Ritchhart, author of Making Thinking Visible, explains how creating a culture of thinking is more important to learning than any particular curriculum and he outlines how any school or teacher can accomplish this by leveraging 8 cultural forces: expectations, language, time, modeling, opportunities, routines, interactions, and environment.

With the techniques and rich classroom vignettes throughout this book, Ritchhart shows that creating a culture of thinking is not about just adhering to a particular set of practices or a general expectation that people should be involved in thinking. A culture of thinking produces the feelings, energy, and even joy that can propel learning forward and motivate us to do what at times can be hard and challenging mental work.

Creating Cultures of Thinking: The 8 Forces We Must Master to Truly Transform Our Schools, by Ron Ritchhart

Review " In this insightful and important book, Ron Ritchhart does a wonderfuljob of relating the fine-scale details of what happens in classrooms tothe high-level goals of education. We see how our use of languageinfluences our students' views of what schools are for, the importanceof thinking carefully about time and space, and how ultimately, nurturing our relationships with our students and our colleagues areessential elements in creating schools that nurture thinking, ratherthan compliance.  Any teacher, wherever they are in their career, willlearn from this book, and be prompted to reflect on their practice."  - Dylan Wiliam, Emeritus Professor of Educational AssessmentUniversity College London"This is not just a book about creating "thinkingclassrooms." At its core, it is a book about classrooms as a place for studentsand teachers to be fully human together--a place where teaching is lifting theprospects of every student, a place where learning is discovering the mind, aplace that dignifies and enlivens the concept of education.  The book is a reminder that many of us havelost our way as educators.  It is a guidefor re-setting our compasses."-  Carol Ann Tomlinson, Ed.D., William Clay Parrish, Jr. Professor & Chalr   Educational Leadership, Foundations, and Policy   Curry School of Education, University of Virginia

From the Back Cover

Let's build dynamic learning communities that engage students, promote deep understanding, and sustain a lifetime of inquiry.

Once again we are in the throes of curriculum reforms designed to transform education. However, these efforts generally neglect the vital role classroom and school culture play in promoting learning. Any curriculum, good or bad, will sink or float on the culture of the classroom in which it is enacted. Culture matters not only to realize curricular goals, but also as a shaper of students' development as powerful thinkers and learners.

Creating Cultures of Thinking, written by leading Harvard University researcher Ron Ritchhart, builds the case for "enculturation" as the key to deep learning and the development of the habits of mind and dispositions needed in a changing world. He demystifies the process of creating dynamic learning communities by first identifying and then walking us through the eight forces we must marshal to build strong group culture. Case studies, practical guidelines, self-assessments, and inquiry projects enable teachers and administrators—as well as anyone interested in fostering group learning—to understand and shape powerful learning communities.

Praise for Creating Cultures of Thinking

"Ron Ritchhart makes a powerful argument that building a 'thinking culture' within our schools is the key to better learning, greater student engagement, and more happiness all around. This book includes not only a thorough discussion of the elements of a successful school culture, but also activities to elicit contributions from students and teachers. And who knows? If the lessons in this book are put into practice, a culture of thinking might escape the classroom walls and spread to the wider world. Wouldn't that be something?" —Daniel H. Pink, author of Drive and To Sell Is Human

"This book builds on the excellence of Making Thinking Visible and gets to the heart of the eight forces that truly make a difference to learning—and in particular, to the mind frames of the teachers, leaders, and students that allow a sustained, contemplative, and powerful impact on learning. . . . If your aim is to go beyond the surface, this is the perfect book. You can 'hear' Ritchhart thinking as you read this tour de force." —John Hattie, director, Melbourne Education Research Institute; author of Visible Learning

"Books in education tend to be either presentations of a few big ideas, scholarly reviews of relevant literature, or guidebooks to effective practice. Creating Cultures of Thinking is a rarity—a seamless blend of all three genres. Whether you teach kindergarteners or graduate students, you will learn much from this book." —Howard Gardner, author of Truth, Beauty, and Goodness Reframed

By Connie Weber, educator, teacher leader If you had to select one, just one, book on education, because you were hoping to get a sense for what we can do to bring out the LIFE in learning for all students--and teachers, of course as well--then choose this book. It is a profound read, an unusual combination of high level educational research combined with practical what-to-do-now ideas for launching into a whole new and much better plan for learning in classrooms. Learning with meaningfulness, depth, bustling energy, and full participation. We’re talking about meaningful for everyone: students, teachers, administrators. Parents who want their children to be deeply engaged in learning. People who value learning. People who look to education to nurture the development of thoughtful adults and life-long learners. This is the book. Likely to rise quickly to the best book in education of our time, this book--and way of thinking about learning--launches us into a new and much more vibrant, hopeful, and (at the very highest level) purposeful way of going about things in education. Let’s get beyond “testing cultures” and into “learning cultures.” Let’s develop intellectual character; let’s encourage habits of mind, intellectual passions and thinking dispositions that nurture the highest development of all. We do this by creating our own cultures of thinking, designed from within, designed by educators and members of the learning communities. The messages from Creating Cultures of Thinking: The 8 Forces We Must Master to Truly Transform Our Schools are not superficial. What Ritchhart is having us think through will not lead to a quick fix. But what he writes about can be enacted immediately. We get a clear sense of how to go about nurturing the development of the highest capacities of all of our students, along with strong positive feelings about school and a very high level of engagement. From reading the book, we know how to start. We know how to add to our beginnings and keep going, ultimately designing learning ecologies that are beyond most anything in the “old plan.” We learn to “...send new messages about what learning is and how it happens.”Chapters in the book correspond to “cultural forces:” “Expectations: Recognizing How Our Beliefs Shape Our Behavior; Language: Appreciating Its Subtle Yet Profound Power; Time: Learning to be Its Master Rather Than Its Victim; Modeling: Seeing Ourselves through Our Students’ Eyes; Opportunities: Crafting the Vehicles for Learning; Routines: Supporting and Scaffolding Learning and Thinking; Interactions: Forging Relationships That Empower Learners; Environment: Using Space to Support Learning and Thinking.” In each chapter we examine an ultimate (and sometimes hidden to our daily consciousness) underlying dynamic tension in learning. Should we go for the desultory historically-arrived-at factory model of education, or should we go for deep learning as the essence of life and growth and becoming all that we can be as educators and students? An obvious choice. And Ritchhart guides us through seeing how to go about the change.Chapters contains rich portraits of teachers involved in cultures of thinking who are at work, doing lessons, sharing their classes. Ritchhart’s reflections help us see the nuanced layers of “split-screen” teaching in which you’re not only involved in the learning but also in learning about learning. Metacognition is what it’s all about, and that isn’t an abstract thing at all, but a tangible, energizing, empowering tool for ongoing development of full intellectual capacity. Building up our reflection on the “how” of learning makes us able to create joyful, empowering, fresh ways to go about growth and learning. Students and teachers dive into design of learning cultures that bring out the highest level of engagement for all learners.Perhaps best of all, each chapter ends with a list of things we can discuss, do, try, experiment with, use as launching points. Ready to try? Begin here! Ready to move deeper? Try this. Ritchhart’s lists are lively, accessible, and challenging. Reading the book together with colleagues is a great way to start right now with educational transformation. This is a “...new story of learning where thinking is valued, visible, and actively promoted…” We see that “we must become the shapers of culture and message managers to realize our vision and transform our schools.” We cultivate dispositions through purposeful forms of enculturation. We enculturate what we value, the kinds of thinking we hunger to see. What kinds of thinking are of value? You’ll be encouraged to generate your own lists. Here are several that we explore in the book: “asking questions, identifying puzzles, and wondering about the mysteries and implications of the objects and ideas of study...building ongoing and evolving explanations, interpretations, and theories based on one’s ever-developing knowledge and understanding...identifying, gathering, and reasoning with evidence to justify and support one’s interpretations, predictions, theories, arguments, and explanations...delving deeply to uncover the complexities and challenges of a topic and look below the surface of things...being able to capture the core or essence of a thing to discern what it really is really all about.”The book is a strong move away from teaching as transmission of facts (or knowledge-bits, as David Perkins would say) toward creation of something quite different, a culture of thinking. What’s presented in the book is not a “lay it on you” curriculum, not at all. The book is about a collaborative transformation that gradually occurs across all subjects, grade levels, and forms of interaction in school. It is relevant to all subjects, all ages. “Culture is foundational. It will determine how any curriculum comes to life.” Through reading Creating Cultures of Thinking: the 8 Forces We Must Master to Truly Transform Our Schools, we begin our immersion in “..the ongoing apprenticeship of learning how to learn.”The references and research provided in the book are the stuff of dreams. Do you want to be informed about the very latest substantial, cutting-edge knowledge and discoveries in the field of education? You’ve got it. Use the book as your road map for extensive inquiry. At the end of the book, we find six case studies written from the perspective of leaders currently involved in various stages of the transformation. For instance, here is Rod Rock, superintendent of Clarkston Schools in Michigan: “In my experience, competitiveness, rote learning, large amounts of practice work, and multiple-choice tests are the norm in schools, while collaboration, deep thinking, and demonstrations of understanding are the exceptions. In my previous role as director of curriculum, I had visited schools engaged with Cultures of Thinking and witnessed firsthand the depth of students’ thinking, the effects on teachers’ practices, and the strength of the learning environments. I sensed that this work was deeply personal and altered teachers’ perceptions and beliefs. In these schools, standardized test scores were strong, yet they were not the focus of the curriculum, professional development, planning, or teaching. Instead, students were asked to think with what they know, solve problems, communicate effectively, collaborate, infer, summarize, consider multiple points of view, and make connections between ideas; thus they were well prepared for the tests. These visits convinced me that learning to think well represented the true purpose of schooling in the twenty-first century.”The six cases illuminate, from various viewpoints in various settings, the power of the transformations we can design. Some excerpts: “We became students of our teaching and not just implementers of someone else’s ideas.” (Adam Scher, principal, Way Elementary, Bloomfield, MI). “Probably the most vital element in the success of this ongoing work has been building the capacity of teachers to teach one another and share their enthusiasm for the ideas with colleagues and parents.” (Jim Reese, Director of Studies, Washington International School) “...using the cultural forces as entry points to explore these teaching and learning dilemmas really seemed to make the cultural forces something they learned with and through rather that something they learned about.” (Mark Church, CoT Consultant) “We felt we needed to ‘go slow to go fast.’ We knew that creating cultures of thinking was unlike other educational initiatives that districts had been involved with in the past. We had to crack the mindset of ‘teacher training’ and ‘rollouts.’ How do we build this differently? How do we sustain the communication and support of these school leaders such that they are not doing a new program but rather, living culture change?” Lauren Childs (School Quality Consultant, Oakland Schools, MI)Ritchhart summarizes, “...all six cases demonstrate the importance of allowing teachers to own the process of creating a culture of thinking. This means listening to teachers, engaging teachers in teaching one another, and providing avenues for teacher leadership. Doing so gives the efforts an organic, bottom-up spirit, which enables teachers to feel empowered. Teachers should never get the sense that ‘cultures of thinking’ is something that is done to them. Creating a culture of thinking must always be a goal that individuals embrace to improve their teaching and advance the learning of their students. From this place, teachers can then support, push, and nurture the efforts of their colleagues as the school collectively grows into a culture of thinking, and the lives and learning of all are truly transformed.”So the book is about everyone working in collaboration, about changes rising organically and powerfully from within. We’re talking about “...an outcome that encapsulates a higher vision for us as educators, representing what we are able to achieve when we allow ourselves to dream outside the well-worn constraints of the school bureaucracy. It is the stuff of passion, energy, and drive--both for our students and us.”At one point in the book, Ritchhart points out, “All too often we educators find it difficult to dream.”But this time, it’s different. We can not only dream but enact our dreams, live them out. And thanks to Creating Cultures of Thinking: The 8 Forces We Must Master to Truly Transform Our Schools, we can begin right now.

As an administrator it gives me a wonderful approach to embrace teaching for understanding. It's a great compliment to Ritchhart's MAKING THINKING VISIBLE. This book gives the philosophy and necessity behind the need for thinking routines. I love the breakdown of the book. This makes it easier to grasp the 8 components of culture in our schools and classrooms.

Teaching What Matters Most By Tamara Jaimes Admittedly, books that inspire my growth as a teacher are some of my favorites, so you'll have to trust me when I tell you that Creating Cultures of Thinking: The 8 Forces We Must Master to Truly Transform Our Schools takes that love to a whole new level. Creating Cultures of Thinking is the latest installment in a decade-long conversation that began for me in 2004 with Intellectual Character: What It Is, Why It Matters, and How to Get It, and continued with Making Thinking Visible in 2011. In this trilogy Ron Ritchhart creates a vision of teaching, classroom culture, and intellectual life worthy of our highest aspirations.Creating Cultures of Thinking also works as a stand-alone title. It's Low Threshold High Ceiling professional development. No matter the career stage, there are entry points here for all teachers passionate about honing their craft. In the midst of intense and multi-faceted pressures relentlessly pulling our attention and energy in other directions, Creating Cultures of Thinking dives into the complexity of creating transformation, of anchoring our daily classroom interactions in the "promotion of the dispositions needed for students to become active learners and effective thinkers eager and able to create, innovate, and solve problems"(34).Committing to a culture of thinking requires submitting to vulnerability. Ritchhart acknowledges the struggle and recognizes that these changes grow only from examining and judging our own understandings, expectations, practices, and authenticity as thinkers. "It takes a degree of nerve, ambition, and fortitude to steadfastly and honestly work to uncover the story of learning one is telling students. Once we have done so, we must then assess how that story stacks up against what we truly want for our students," (29). "(This) requires a conviction on our part. We must first set and then calibrate our internal compass if we want it to act as a reliable guide"(43). If it is true that children grow into the intellectual life around them, it is incumbent on us to be model thinkers. It takes courage to enter this arena, and Ritchhart inspires that courage. He asks us to recall a time when we have been a part of a culture of thinking, "A place where the group's collective thinking as well as each individual's thinking was valued, visible, and actively promoted as part of the regular day-to-day experience of all group members"(108). He reminds us, "(a) culture of thinking produces the feelings, energy, and even joy that can propel learning forward and motivate us to do what at times can be hard and challenging mental work"(5). With Creating Cultures of Thinking at my side, I am ready for the challenge.

It provides excellent examples of higher-level-cognitive-demand mathematical tasks, and the numerous detailed forms are invaluable in helping teams enhance unit plans, while also focusing on assessment and homework. Although written with examples from the Common Core, the ideas and actions set forth by the authors are workable for any set of state mathematics standards.”

—Don S. Balka, Professor Emeritus, Department of Mathematics, Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, Indiana

This book is a significant addition to the PLC at Work library a Learning by Doing for mathematics. The power of the Common Core does not reside in the actual standards, but in how these rigorous learning outcomes impact classroom instruction and student learning. Kanold, Kanold-McIntyre, Larson, and Briars describe with specificity and simplicity the essential work teacher teams must do before, during, and after a unit of study to ensure every student succeeds. I only wish this book was available when I taught middle-school mathematics! --Mike Mattos, Educational Author and Consultant

Orders to Nowhere: The after action report from a career Marine's transition back to the civilian world, by Michael D. Grice

Review "This is THE book for any person in the military who is planning to transition or retire. There are great personal vignettes and lessons from cover to cover. This book makes more sense of the very complicated transition process than anything I have seen." -Chuck Heiser, former Marine and professional career consultant"Orders to Nowhere made real difference in the lives of those who serve by putting a complex undertaking into simple terms with humor and humility. I have passed insights from it to many veterans and active duty Marines who are contemplating transition." -Colonel Greg Martin USMC

About the Author Mike Grice enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve as a private at age 17 and retired from active duty as a Lieutenant Colonel over 27 years later. After four combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, humanitarian operations in East Timor, and five challenging command assignments he was quite surprised to find that the transition from life in uniform back to the civilian world would be one of the most challenging, frustrating, confusing, and enlightening aspects of his career. In addition to serving his country, Mike is an award winning writer and widely recognized expert in leadership. While in uniform he was decorated for heroism, meritorious service, and leadership and was also the recipient of the Officer Basic School’s Outstanding Leadership Award amd the Marine Corps’ most prestigious leadership award: the Leftwich Trophy. After his retirement he earned his Masters of Business Administration from the University of California’s Marshall Business School and founded The Decisive Leadership Group, a leadership and management consulting company. He also dedicates a considerable amount of time to veterans issues and helping others make the jump from the service back to the other side. He lives in Encinitas, California with his wife Cheri and their two boys, Max and Alexander.

By KMac Transitioning from military service back to the civilian world can be challenging, regardless of whether one has served four years or twenty-four years. After retiring from the Marine Corps with a distinguished leadership career as an officer, Mike Grice has written an incredibly valuable book that contains an entertaining and extremely reassuring message to those in the military who are contemplating or in the process of finding a new role after their service to our nation. Based on his own experience and others along the way, LtCol Grice's book contains solid advice, encouragement, understanding, and perspective to the many facets of cultural incongruity that can be daunting at best or, on the other hand, downright overwhelming. The author provides a myriad of planning tips and resources to explore in helping to navigate a successful transition journey. This book should be required reading for all service members in transition or veterans who find themselves struggling with the experiences that they have encountered since they have transitioned.

I have personally benefitted from Mike's "Lessons Learned" and successfully applied them during my own transition from military service to the civilian business world. As all veterans soon realize, the process of leaving active duty is a significant one, emotionally and financially, for ourselves and our families, so the guidance, insight and perspective in Mike's book is extremely valuable and greatly appreciated. I enthusiastically recommend this book to all transitioning Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines.

By Shelby DuBois Mike Grice's 'After Action Report' should be required reading for any Marine contemplating a career move to a civilian job. It sure wouldn't hurt anyone else either. While part of the book is Marine specific, the main 'lessons learned' after each chapter are universal. Civilians and military members alike can benefit greatly from his insights and experiences. You'd think a book by a combat seasoned career officer writing about what would normally be dry material would be stiff and to the point, but Mike Grice's self depricating humor and liberal doses of wit and wisdom make the book a quick and meaningful read.
