My book is a kick-start to get you to where you want to be for a successful life. It's a book you can easily relate to about the reality of day-to-day events that confront you. Getting to the point of being happy with yourself is a life-long task. I can't do the hard part of putting these important areas of living life in action for you, but I can engage you with some personal experiences and insight that will open windows into your life. I ask the essential questions you need to face as to where your priorities and values are now. Use each chapter as a guide to help you set goals for obtaining a bold and successful life.                                                                                                                                                           My writing voice is more of a storytelling style, permeated with humor and wisdom. I start off with a famous quote from what my Grandma always said..."When You're Dead, You're Dead For A Long...Long Time". But in my case maybe not all the time, as I was dead once and needed two back-to-back open heart surgeries. My surgeon massaged my heart relentlessly, until it finally restarted, this amidst some very tense, anxious moments. I was, needless to say, extremely elated when they started me up again; I was given a second chance to do a few things differently before being dead again.                                                                                                                                               Throughout my journey, I have learned how to prioritize areas of life that are the key building blocks for self-fulfillment. Each one of you, of course, is presently at a different place and stage of your own life journey. We all nevertheless have the same goal of wanting to engage in and experience activities that bring feelings of self-gratification. I hope to empower you to undertake a meaningful journey. Through personal anecdotes, I highlight essential topics to help encourage you to revisit your priorities and passions that will lead to a happier and more fulfilling life. My emphasis is on re-energizing and inspiring you to feel that you can make these changes happen.                                                                                                                                                          Use Imagination By Moonlight: Living life boldly and successfully, as a tool for guiding and motivating you to lead a more rewarding life.                                                                                                                                               {Proceeds from books sold are dedicated to programs for homeless youth.}                                                                                                                                                    Reviews from readers:                                                                                                                                                       "Every once in a while you come across something in writing that makes you simply melt with happiness."                                                                                                                                                          "His ingenuity permeates his writing and brings a refreshing perspective on life's important lessons."  "Always look forward to his down-to-earth insight about life."   "I save everything he has written...to re-read them again and again."  "The stories he writes are so enjoyable and humorous; I find myself smiling and laughing out loud."

An inspiring book By Mary on Cedar Hill Wes Adamson takes you on a journey beginning with how he experienced life growing up on a small farm outside of Cincinnati and ending with life now as a retired husband and father involved in youth and outreach programs. He writes with a passion and sense of humor but never forgets the role imagination played in his life. This is a book designed to touch you at a personal level – highlighting, underlining, and folding the corner of page containing a message that you identify with so strongly you will want to share it and what it means to you with someone close to you.

He truly is a gifted author. I recommend this book to anyone wants to read about the times in our lives which make such a great impact in our later years. He writes as if he is having a conversation with you, and makes you appreciate the "little" things in life. We should appreciate each day, each person, and the struggles we all go through. Life is a rollercoaster; but it is an exciting ride!

115 of 125 people found the following review helpful. The Encyclopedia of Unstoppable Confidence. By A Customer A more apt title for this book would be to call it "The Encyclopedia of Unstoppable Confidence".I have not yet come across any other book, which focuses 100% on building greater confidence. This book gives you step by step detailed instructions to really "go for it".Kent clearly explains the crucial difference between "confidence" and "competence" in the first few pages. I made the mistake of assuming that if I was competent in a specific area, than I automatically had confidence in that area.Once you understand the distinction he gives a simple but highly effective formulaCompetence + confidence = successHave you ever had the feeling of a light bulb switching on in your head? Well I had that same feeling when I really understood the difference between "confidence" and "competence" and resolved to take the book more seriously. On page 27 he gives a fantastic example about how to disassociate your emotions from yourself personally. In other words DONT take possession of something, which is just a mental process. Some examples of mental processes from the book are fear, shyness and depression. All of these are not actual things but just mental processes or sequences of thoughts that run in your mind.A brilliant example and I quote from the book (page 26) "The language you use to describe what you are feeling impacts that feeling tremendously, and it is your knowledge, your awareness of these processes that gives you power over them. Just like when somebody said, "I' am depressed". What they've done is built that notion into their very being. Nobody can be depressed all the time. If they were, they wouldn't' call it depression. It'd just be their normal state of being. Instead, people who consider themselves depressed should be saying, "I run a process through my mind that causes me to experience certain pictures, sounds, and feelings inside that I have collectively labeled as depression."Yes I know this sounds like some new age stuff, and until you TRY IT OUT yourself you will not realize the power of disassociating yourself from your processes. There are many more such examples, which switched on the light bulb in my head. The book also talks about creating the kind of body language, which gives you unstoppable confidence. I wish there were some pictures of "steepling fingers" as I could think of a variety of ways to steeple fingers based on the authors explanation in the book and am not sure which is the correct way.Another excellent technique is to parrot to create verbal rapport. The book lists key words/phrases to help people keep on talking non-stop and increase rapport. Be careful using them however because using them correctly will ensure that you will be listening to them for hours...ahh the price of success!!!Another superb technique is to ask open-ended question, instead of yes/no type of questions to gain rapport. My biggest gripe with the book is that while the author specifically mentions about creating a personal confidence calendar to schedule and practice various exercises in the book he does not give any suggested plans. This book contains so many different techniques for building confidence that unless you take good notes or read the book multiple times it is easy to miss some important techniques. I would have appreciated a sample step by step plan(menu) to incorporate in daily life, just like some of the dieting and exercise books suggest.Obviously such a plan will be generalized but at least it will be a good starting point to the other alternative of digging through the book multiple times and/or make copious notes. The serious student will no doubt do what ever it takes and assimilate most of the techniques from the book. This is not a read and throw type of book. This is a book you will come back to again and again as you build layer upon layer of confidence techniques into your personality. The cover design of a man stomping confidently makes me smile every time I look at it, which is good since this makes me pick up the book again! The words on the page are densely packed in the book and it seemed liked it took forever to read a page. I sincerely feel every self-development book should reinforce concepts learned in each chapter by having a brief summary and/or short quiz and real life exercises at the end of each chapter. I wish this book had some of these to help reinforce the concepts at each stage. If the book were to contain only one chapter "Twenty explosive techniques for unstoppable confidence" it would be worth it. One technique I already started using is called "rapid confidence at will". I used the PUMA GRRRROWL and felt simply awesome. I used some of the techniques, which appealed to me immediately, as I read the book. There are just sooooooo many techniques that I will keep going back to the book again and again.I would have appreciated more examples of how the author used these techniques to overcome shyness in a variety of real life circumstances. One section I particularly fell in love with is the chapter titled "Speaking the language of confidence". Kent contrasts the vocabulary of the shy person (who uses words like try, hope, attempt, wish etc) versus the vocabulary of the confident person (absolutely, guaranteed, sure, certainly etc). As I gained more awareness I am minimizing use of the shy persons vocabulary. This book uses a lot of NLP based techniques, but thankfully the complex jargon is substituted for simple precise explanations. The appendix contains a comprehensive list of visual, auditory and kinesthetic qualities. All in all an excellent book, and a MUST have in your personal success library if you are a serious student of success.

As I read it, it felt like Kent had known me my whole life and wrote the book specifically for me, because his experiences were so similar to mine. I know that sounds strange, but that just shows that he has been there, done that. It is also the first book that gives you all the tools needed to have incredible unstoppable confidence, I know mine has already doubled and I am not even done with the 21 day program. I used 3 of the tools the night before I had to give a 3 hour presentation to about 40 people last week, and I HATE public speaking, I was actually terrified of it, but now I don't mind it at all, the exercises allowed me to feel totally relaxed and confident as I spoke and gave my presentation. I did awesome the next day. This book not only gives you about 20 tools to use, but more importantly it explains what is going on in your brain that makes you feel less confident and once you understand that thought process, you can easily change it with his techniques, so now when I think of public speaking, it's like no big deal. I already notice myself walking taller, moving with confidence and approaching situations confidently that would normally seem freighting to me. Thanks Kent, I can't wait to see what the next couple weeks will bring

Expand Your Comfort Zone By Rebecca of Amazon Of all the books I have read on self-help topics, this one seemed to contain ideas that not only made complete sense, the author could have only penned this book once he had gained a calm, quiet and powerful presence. You can literally hear his voice and see the change in his life in his writing. He goes from a person who literally felt he did not have the ability to really connect with other people at a deep level (he escapes by burying himself in books) to teaching classes on how to be confident. In the process he learns about his inner desires, how to gain what he really wants out of life and how to give what he has learned to the world in this amazing book.So much of what he said made complete sense. Especially the part where he notes how people who are living the lives of their dreams, are doing so by design. They have learned to release themselves from disempowered language (try, should, etc.) and have embraced fast forward phrases (I absolutely can, I certainly will, It definitely will happen.) The reason it works is because confidence causes your dreams to come true. You set in motion a magical series of events that naturally will lead you to your goal.Today when my husband used the word: "try" in a sentence, alarms went off. Not only did I completely see how this book could change a life, it was already being put in action in my own mind as I asked him to say "will." In that way, he "would" reach his goal and be more determined. Had I not read this book, I can't say I would have even blinked!"You realize that anything in your path that seems like an obstacle or a detour really is an opportunity in disguise to show your resourcefulness." -pg. 6The author has based some of the material on Neuro-Liguistic Programming (NLP). This is the study of how language, both verbal and nonverbal, affects our minds. First, he describes his own struggle with shyness and then dives right into how others can learn from his experience and learn to speak the language of confidence. Each chapter begins with an inspirational quote and bold headings direct you through the information in a lovely organized fashion. A "free offer" is included and you can not only subscribe to the free confidence 7-day e-course, you are also entitled to describe your biggest Confidence Challenge and receive a personal response from the author. I have never seen an offer like this and it truly shows the author cares about his readers. I was very impressed! This book could not have been published at a more appropriate time.Invest in Yourself!"Be courageous. I have seen many depressions in business. Always America has emerged from these stronger and more prosperous. Be brave as your fathers before you. Have faith! Go forward! -Thomas A. Edison~The Rebecca Review

We had actually also bought two other books, neither of which was very helpful, but this one was! We ended up giving it to a lovely couple who had recently moved to Skye and were very interested in taking walks to get to know the Isle, and we thought that this was the oerfect book for them!

Britain's leading guru looks to the future. Charles Handy is one of the giants of contemporary thought. His books on management - including Understanding Organizations and Gods of Management - have changed the way we view business. His work on broader issues and trends - such as Beyond Certainty - has changed the way we view society. In The Second Curve, Handy builds on a life's work to glimpse into the future and see what challenges and opportunities lie ahead. He looks at current trends in capitalism and asks whether it is a sustainable system. He explores the dangers of a society built on credit. He challenges the myth that remorseless growth is essential. He even asks whether we should rethink our roles in life - as students, parents, workers and voters - and what the aims of an ideal society of the future should be. Provocative and thoughtful as ever, he sets out the questions we all need to ask ourselves - and points us in the direction of some of the answers.

Here the author gives thought to the future and examines what challenges, opportunities and problems we may face.Is the current capitalist-led system sustainable? Are we building a society that is set to implode upon itself? What might the ideal society of the future look like and do we need to change our roles to fit into this new world? All this and more is considered in a non-hysterical, responsive, provocative and thoughtful manner. The author has taken the opportunity to revalidate many of his previously stated arguments and predictions whilst expanding and developing new ideas. It feels to be a harmonious and sensitive collection. Society does appear to be in a permanent state of flux and the author notes that he cannot imagine how things will be in even 30 years time, so much of what we take for granted today could be viewed as a quaint, distant memory tomorrow.“Anything that is based on information, be it books, music or entertainment, will effectively be free, but a world of free goods offers few paying jobs. If they do find or, better, create any work that pays they will need to keep doing it well into their eighties so they had better enjoy it,” notes the author, adding: “Already, as I see it, too much of all that is new favours the few and not the many. Society is out of balance. Power is unequally distributed. In business, the information economy is turning into a winner-takes-all one, where the likes of Amazon, Facebook and Google dominate and gobble up any daring newcomer.”Central to the author’s thinking is the Sigmoid Curve, a mathematical concept that is used to project the future and – it is contended – something that tracks everything in our lives and the organisations and concepts that control them.“There seems to be no escape from the Sigmoid Curve. The only variable is the length of the curve. The Roman Empire lasted 400 years, but finally reached its end. Other empires lasted less long before they dipped, as the British Empire did and the American one surely will. Governments and dictatorships ultimately outstay their welcome. On a smaller scale, businesses used to last on average for 40 years before they collapsed or were taken over; now the average lifespan appears to have dropped to a mere 14 years,” wrote the author, noting that the key is to leapfrog the change, implementing a so-called second curve to effectively restart the cycle. It is easier said than done. The use of a series of mini essays is a great solution, letting the reader digest smaller elements and progress at their own pace. All too many books tend to focus on the big picture, forgetting that not everybody has the time or energy to devote to many hours of reading at a time.So in conclusion, a highly enjoyable book that was neither alarmist nor conformist but it will get you thinking.

He is able to get to the profound center of things while remaining very real and practical. He has a unique gift to sense the human condition in our time and to get that condition articulated. Always worth reading!

It is not bad book, but I wanted many times to comment some chapters. As author itself stated at the beginning of the book - he is asking questions and not offering answers. So in other words - he is able nicely put into words thoughts which we feel in these days in this world. I think that if this book and this author went behind it and tried to offer also some answers, whole book would be much more enjoyable for me. If he tried, at least sometimes.

This book is a unique teaching tool that takes math lovers on a journey designed to motivate kids (and kids at heart) to learn the fun of factoring and prime numbers. This volume visually explores the concepts of factoring and the role of prime and composite numbers. The playful and colorful monsters are designed to give children (and even older audiences) an intuitive understanding of the building blocks of numbers and the basics of multiplication. The introduction and appendices can also help adult readers answer questions about factoring from their young audience. The artwork is crisp and creative and the colors are bright and engaging, making this volume a welcome deviation from standard math texts. Any person, regardless of age, can profit from reading this book. Readers will find themselves returning to its pages for a very long time, continually learning from and getting to know the monsters as their knowledge expands. You Can Count on Monsters is a magnificent addition for any math education program and is enthusiastically recommended to every teacher, parent and grandparent, student, child, or other individual interested in exploring the visually fascinating world of the numbers 1 through 100.

You Can Count on Monsters: The First 100 Numbers and Their Characters, by Richard Evan Schwartz

From School Library Journal Grade 4–8—This hybrid math/art book is both ambitious and imaginative. An introductory section explains the colored-dot configurations and factor trees for numbers 1 to 100, which appear on the verso of each spread. These factor trees are "all the way grown out" to the lowest common factors, or prime numbers. On the opposite page is a monster scene that represents the number. Schwartz has created a creature for each prime number: "Each monster has something about it that relates to its number, but sometimes you have to look hard (and count) to find it." Thus, the monster for 5 is a five-featured, five-pointed star, and the 13 monster sports a pink-and-white eye-patch with 13 segments. The illustration for 14 is a "7" monster eating a "2" monster. The "78" picture includes monsters representing 2, 3, and 13, the prime factors of that number. The pages are glossy black with flat, colorful abstractions. The author's claim, "The only thing you really need to know in order to enjoy this book is how to multiply whole numbers together, like 2 and 3," is an understatement; readers will need patience and an open, undaunted mind to deconstruct the monster scenes. This is a book for math lovers who want to have some fun. Challenge these students to create their own prime monsters and combinations. While the dot configurations and factor trees are less inventive, they provide a more concrete explanation of the math for the rest of us.—Barbara Auerbach, PS 217, Brooklyn, New York Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Review This delightful book is the result of the author's desire to teach his daughters about primes and factorization. Apart from an introduction and some explanatory material in the back, it consists of one hundred double pages: on the left page is a number and that many dots, arranged into clusters that display its factorization. On the right page is a picture that represents the same information using the author's 'monsters,' which represent the prime numbers. --MAA This compact, innovative book counts to 100 using prime numbers represented as monsters, each with identifying characteristics (two resembles a bee with two buggy eyes, and three is an angry-looking triangular creature). The book opens with explanations of multiplication, prime and composite numbers, and factor trees, then moves on to a list of numbers. Each prime number looks unique, while composite numbers are represented by scenes involving their prime monsters (eight is illustrated as three of the beelike twos, i.e., two times two times two. Readers may have difficulty deciphering the pictures, which come to resemble little works of abstract geometric art. But especially for creative learners, visualizing the roles each monster plays may lead to deeper number sense. Ages 4 to 8. --Publishers WeeklyMy eight-year old granddaughter Natalie is just learning about multiplication and as we read through almost the whole book, she especially liked the 'special numbers' (primes) where a new shape appeared. At one point she paused and said, 'You never get two special numbers one right after the other.' I gave positive reinforcement for this, her first mathematical conjecture (not mentioning the one counterexample of 2 and 3). She's going to take the book to her second grade class. Every school library should have one. --Thomas Banchoff, former MAA President

What I did not expect however, was how absolutely brilliant it was going to be! What Schwartz does with the monsters to teach about prime numbers is both beautiful and ingenious.I homeschool 3 boys of primary school age. Our oldest son is autistic and has an extreme aversion to math. Our second son is the complete opposite, devouring anything and everything numeric. He's followed by our youngest who needs a thrill to sit still. All of my boys LOVE this book! My oldest (who is *the one* who would benefit the most from reading it) shied away from it at first. He's a bright boy and knew all too fast that the book was teaching math, a subject in which he struggles so much with. Well, after listening and watching me read this book, and seeing both his mother and his younger brothers having so much fun as we all "played" along, he had to come over and join in. He loves it! My two younger boys are quite obsessed with it. I have to give them turns with it!.I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a struggling learner/special needs child. With all of its benefits academically, I would (and will) buy the book for adults as well, if not just for the art work! It's amazing (and clever!) how Mr. Schwartz brings to life these numbers! As an adult who's also had an extreme aversion to math (my entire life) I can honestly say that Mr. Schwartz is the first person to claim that math can be fun, and then went on to prove it to me! What's more, is that he proved it to my child(ren)!

I had a great time figuring out the pictures with my kids, with my 5 year old figuring out how to multiply after a going through a few monsters. I used it in a class of 7 and 8 year olds to teach them about prime numbers and they've been discussing the prime monsters ever since.

Wonderful book to teach anyone about primes, multiplication, factors and factor trees, factorials and introduce a proof to you using factorials to show that primes and thus numbers go on forever. Love the monsters ... love the book.

Getting a job in intelligence is both easier and more difficult than it was back in 2009 when I wrote the first edition of How to Get a Job in Intelligence. It is harder because of the budget constraints within the US National Security Community. The winding down of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and the hiring restrictions brought about by sequestration have made it much more difficult to get a job as an analyst in traditional intelligence agencies such as the CIA. That said, this trend has been offset by the growth of intelligence positions within the business community. While they are often difficult to identify (businesses rarely call their intelligence positions by that name), the improving economy and the need for people who can analyze information that is critical to success or failure of a company but is about something that is outside that company’s control has only grown over the last six years. This book is designed to provide both a high level overview as well as detailed guidance (with lots and lots of hyperlinks!) that should prove useful to both the entry-level and experienced job hunter. We cover the entire spectrum of intelligence organizations and functions including not only national security positions (such as those with the CIA or FBI) but also within businesses, law enforcement agencies and even internationally. Getting a job in intelligence has never been easy. The requirements, regardless of the area in which you are interested, are always challenging. With this new edition of How To Get a Job in Intelligence, we aim to improve your chances of not only landing a position but landing the right position with an organization that best fits your skills and interests.

Allan Dayhoff, D.Min., the Founder and Executive Director of Evangelize Today, writes about his life experiences and his path to evangelism. He presents a new approach to teaching evangelism that offers participants the opportunity to reflect on their own conversion process and to apply their new insights. The book provides "a perspective that might actually set some folks free to love, free to say, 'Tell me more'” (Dr. David B. Wallover, Senior Pastor, Harvest Presbyterian Church (PCA), Medina, OH). "Al's story is earthy and redemptive. He invites you to "listen to hear" in a way that is refreshing. I invite you to listen to those around you, but first listen to Al" (Dr. Tom Wood, President of CMM, Inc., Atlanta).

Inspiring call to evangelism in a post-Christian world By Tony Lombardo “Church in a Blues Bar” by Allan Dayhoff is a fascinating, inspiring, and wise look at evangelism in our 21st century post-Christian world. Dayhoff tells the story of his shift from being a mega-church pastor to the local “parish priest” of a local blues bar. Dayhoff, whose heart is clearly wired for evangelism and outreach, found himself buried underneath the nagging concerns of managing the machinery of the church, pulling him off of his real passion for ministering to the lost.Dayhoff found solace and refuge in the dark anonymity of a local blues bar, where he would hang out on Sunday evenings. His heart came alive as he got to know the diverse denizens of the place, entering into their stories, pain, and even in some cases, outright hostility toward his status as a “pastor” and all that his calling symbolizes.“Church in a Blues Bar” contains many of the lessons Dayhoff has learned from actually engaging the unchurched and de-churched on their own turf, and I have to say, I was richly blessed reading it, inspired, and encouraged in my own friendships with those who don’t share my Christian viewpoint. The subtitle of the book is “listening to hear,” which Dayhoff contrasts with “listening to reply.” Most of us listen to reply—we are too puffed up with our own knowledge, fears, and insecurities that we often don’t hear the heart of the person with whom we are in conversation.I was privileged to meet the author at a coffee event, and I can personally attest to his evident spiritual gift of what I would simply call “deep listening,” a kind of listening that hears the question behind the question and touches the heart of the person behind their words. This is an incredible gift that is a part of the gift of evangelism, and I would commend this book if for no other reason than to see how a gifted evangelist engages others, that we might learn and sharpen our own listening abilities. The questions Dayhoff would have us ask of our unchurched friends are questions every image-bearer of God asks: (1) Where do you believe the world came from? (2) What do you believe about God? (3) What do you believe about Jesus Christ? (4) What do you believe about life after death? (5) If you could ask God one question, what would it be?And when we ask these questions, we shut up and listen. We seek to hear the person behind the responses.Dayhoff makes a number of profound points (get the book!), one of which is the common ground of suffering that believers share with unbelievers that provides a “bridge” of sorts by which to enter into meaningful spiritual dialogue. Dayhoff says the primary question unbelievers are asking is: “If your God is so great, why is my life so hard?” While the discipline of apologetics plays a role here, it doesn’t hold a candle to the ministry of lifting up our own hurts before the Lord, acknowledging before God and others (even unbelievers) that we don’t have all the answers either, yet sharing the real hope in Christ that is available even in the midst of pain and the absence of certainty.Dayhoff also inspires in his call to exit the safe and predictable confines of the church “bubble” and enter into “outposts” where the unchurched actually live, and to do so in a dependence upon God with a learner’s orientation. In this way, evangelism becomes a part of one’s own discipleship journey, as we find ourselves in Kingdom adventures that are risky and may fail. Yet, we can even celebrate these “failures” because God’s purposes can’t be thwarted by our own ineptitude and the Lord teaches us much through failures. The only thing missing from this wonderful book was a discussion of the role of Romans 1 in Dayhoff’s approach. In other words, if the unbeliever’s fundamental problem is the rebellious suppression of the knowledge of God, how does this reality get integrated into Dayhoff’s emphasis on human beings as image-bearers who can never evade the fingerprints of the Creator on their souls? Would have loved to have seen a chapter on this issue. All in all, take and read this wonderful book, be inspired, and ask the Lord to stoke the fires of your own heart for those different from you. May we die to our own triumphalism, acknowledge we are cracked pots, and reach out with the grace of God that is present in and through our own brokenness and pain to a hurting and weary world. Be encouraged—God is present and already at work in your own “blues bar” to His glory!

By m wellman With honesty and humility a veteran pastor shares his personal journey from traditional church ministry to vibrant evangelism in an unlikely venue.Along the way he rediscovers Jesus' own way of Evangelism through engaging in real relationship, listening to hear, seeing the suffering, and authentic community. The idea of a "church in a blues bar" might sound a bit outrageous, at least until we remember that Jesus' biggest critics complained that he was a "Friend of Sinners."Reading this book might give you new hope for the possibilities of sharing The Gospel in a post-Christian Era At least it did that for me.

I could relate to the struggles of sharing a faith in an area where so many are agnostic at best. Dancing with Heathens may be another title. Listening is indeed a skill most never achieve and evangelists, especially, truly need but Mr. Dayhoff gained his skill in a very unique way. His book inspires me greatly.

By Jim Watts In A Line Can Be, Laura Ljungkvist, using a single line, demonstrates for toddlers and preschoolers the unlimited potential of creativity and explores opposites such as up/down, clean/messy, and simple/complicated along the way. The book is pleasantly simple indeed, though it's easy to tell that your child will have plenty to think about.

In this remarkable short book, the foremost intellectual of our age brings a lifetime of erudition to bear on a subject that he has grappled with for decades, and whose future is profoundly uncertain.

The Idea of Europe finds George Steiner reckoning with Europe from a number of different angles. “Europe,” he writes, “is the place where Goethe’s garden almost borders on Buchenwald, where the house of Corneille abuts on the market-place in which Joan of Arc was hideously done to death.” It is, in other words, a continent rich with contradiction, whose many tensions―cultural, social, political, economic, and religious―have for centuries conspired to pull it apart, even as it has become more and more unified.  But what lies ahead for a continent whose borders are growing and economic might is strengthening, even as its cultural identity recedes? A continent where, in Steiner’s words, “young Englishmen choose to rank David Beckham high above Shakespeare and Darwin in their list of national treasures”? This is the trajectory that Steiner explores so brilliantly in The Idea of Europe.

8 of 13 people found the following review helpful. Not much of an examination By Sceptique500 Having “examined life” (to make it worth living) and in particular the idea of Europe, the author proposes at the end: “With the collapse of Marxism into barbaric tyranny and economic nullity, a great dream, that, as Trotsky proclaimed, of ordinary man following in the wake of Aristotle and Goethe, went lost. Free of a bankrupt ideology it can, it must be dreamt again. It is only in Europe, perhaps, the requisite foundations of literacy, that the sense of the tragic vulnerability of the condition humaine, could provide a basis.” In short, he wants a reply of Marxism. Thank you, if the XXth century has taught us anything, is that only what is “realexistierend” counts. No idea, ideology, religion, should be allowed to get away scot-free, blaming its nefarious effects on poor implementation.Unsurprisingly, the author traces (genealogically) the idea of Europe back to Athens and Jerusalem. For the Romans, he only has a sneer (Heidegger blamed them for the poor translation of “being”). We owe our political institutions to Rome as well as the idea of Commonwealth of Nations on which the modern idea of Europe is built (the Greeks never got past bickering with each other). Epicurus proposed a secular humanism that shaped modern Europe as much as Athens. He also fails to note Christianity’s unique contribution – the notion of eschatological time (Agamben, but also Peter Brown) – which turned living in the world into a boot camp for real life beyond the grave (till then, living was for the here and now – even for the Greeks, who knew no afterlife but for the elites chattering away in the Elysian Fields about their heroic past).Of the four axioms the author lists as defining Europe, three (cafés, walking, the presence of history in daily life) are discussed as the antithesis to the American way of life. In fact, the lecture is diffused with what I would call an anti-americanisme primaire. Life on earth would be in ideal order - were it not for the Anglo-Saxons in general and the base materialism of the USA (for all its faults, the model is lifting much of the world out of abject poverty). He also fails to note Darwin’s fundamental shift in worldview from the individual to the population – and to consequentialism as well as incrementalism. Darwinism was the great slayer of revolutionary idealism as well as "scientific" positivism). Experience (and science) now side with Darwinism, verifying its truth empirically. The “rest of the world” to the author does not exist intellectually, or is stuck in the “Oriental mode of production” (no wonder the author ignores the colonial experience, a minor blemish on the inheritance of Athens and Jerusalem). In so doing, he ignores the ability of Sinic civilizations to deal with silent transformations. The author pines away for the old certainties of “Europe [before it] committed suicide by killing its Jews.” The Jewish experience in Europe is suffused with exclusivism at the detriment of the self-confident multi-culturalism of the First Diaspora. In so doing, the "foremost intellectual of our age" reveals an epigonic, not an examining attitude.

To this day, Japan's modern ascendancy challenges many assumptions about world history, particularly theories regarding the rise of the west and why the modern world looks the way it does. In this engaging new history, Brett L. Walker tackles key themes regarding Japan's relationships with its minorities, state and economic development, and the uses of science and medicine. The book begins by tracing the country's early history through archaeological remains, before proceeding to explore life in the imperial court, the rise of the samurai, civil conflict, encounters with Europe, and the advent of modernity and empire. Integrating the pageantry of a unique nation's history with today's environmental concerns, Walker's vibrant and accessible new narrative then follows Japan's ascension from the ashes of World War II into the thriving nation of today. It is a history for our times, posing important questions regarding how we should situate a nation's history in an age of environmental and climatological uncertainties.
