There are some that the letter answer is completely different than the answer given at the end of the explanations. There are places where the same answer choice is given more than once in a problem. There are errors in some of the writings of the problems....(for example, there is a table given that has the vales of a's and b's but the problem is asking about e's and f's, which was the exact table in a problem on the same page). I do not think that the answer key is easy to read because of the layout (steps and fractions). I thought this would be a great resource, but I don't know if it is completely worth it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. nice book for warm ups! By Wendy C. Nice book for practice questions. A nice mix of content. The only thing I would love to see if they made another book is some multi step questions. You will not run out of questions for your students for awhile. I plan on using this book as a five minute warm up for the rest of the year. I most likely will purchase the eight grade math book from this company.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. It would be easy to change some of these into multi-answer questions with ... By Prescott School District's Math Dept. Overall: These are all multiple choice, mostly one-answer questions. This is not preparing them for the testing questions they will see on a PARCC or Smarter Balanced Test. It would be easy to change some of these into multi-answer questions with checkboxes. It would be even easier to change some of these into short answer questions. The book also claims to have “Hundreds of Activities”; this is misleading. There are great test questions in here, but questions are not activities. This may mislead consumers to think they are buying something that they could teach with, not just assess. Explanations of the problems are well done.Specific CommentsPage Number/s Comment8 Although #7 may be placing extra information in the problem to test reading comprehension for word problems, stating that he dropped out of a 1600 meter race seems unnecessary. It will lead to major confusion in a problem that is already a high DOK for students.20-21 Excellent significance of point questions35 #1 Technically, unless the whole is defined none of these shows the half. You are having the student assume the whole, which is bad fraction sense. Define the whole.36 #6 Type in graphic. “Res” should be “Rest”37 #7 Fix the fractions, the choice of formatting makes for reading difficulty. Is it -11/6 or is it -11/6? A student might not know.43 #4 Example of question that could easily been made into multi-answer75 Remember, students should be able to represent the total of a “24% increase” as 1.24n as well.77 #5 Spacing error with “Melanie ‘s”79-81 Standard 7.EE.B.4.A should have students writing equations to represent the situations, not just solving them. We cannot assume they can write the equation just because they can find the answer. Add equation choices.100 #1 Formatting issue with degree symbol102 #2 x is defined as 50o which means technically there are no missing angles in the figure… Rewrite problem or Redo Graphic104 #1 a + b ≠ 110 “a” and “b” are vertical, so they have the same degree measure, but they are also both obtuse, so that means the angles would not equal 55o. Fix the graphic or change the problem107 Define the length, width, height128 - 131 Mode is not a concentration of central tendency. More focus should be on median and mean. Bring in box plots.

By James Beckett Path of Power the Book of Dawn and Dusk is a brilliant story which will travel to vivid locations with terrifying mobsters. It is one of the most unique fantasy stories out there, yet with all the comfortable and familiar aspects of fantasy we have come to know and love. Monsters like “The Balarto” are so terrifying they will stay with you long after you've put down the book.

What is different about this children’s toilet training book? It uses language patterns and proven, powerful psychological techniques that really get results. Motivation is the key to toilet training. This story is designed to be gently persuasive on both the conscious and unconscious levels. It can be be read aloud to children by an older person, and is intended as an aid to any potty-training method. The psychological techniques woven into this tale can make training quicker and easier. Simple rhyming verses add an extra element of fun. Many concepts are common to all potty-training methods. They are based on motivations that are natural in all healthy children. These include: * Imitation – seeing a person or a ‘drink and wet’ doll using a toilet or potty and wanting to copy. * Wanting to be independent and feel like a grown- up * Peer pressure – seeing siblings or other toddlers successfully using the potty * Wanting to be praiseworthy * Wanting to feel dry * Wanting to feel clean To help children learn, the story is interactive. You can read out questions for the child to answer, and you can ask the child to point to images on the pages. Parents, relax! Just read the story to your little ones and enjoy helping them learn.

By KL This book is a really lovely introduction to geography concepts for small children. My three year old is loving working on this with us, and is learning quite a bit from it. It's a great subject since most preschool and prek class curriculum doesn't touch this topic much. However a couple small things.1. I am not sure the answer key is really needed at this level.2. On the map of the US where they are learning about the states, they completely neglected to label Michigan. I was not aware we were down to 49 states..I mean I realize parts of Detroit are rough but I am not sure it warrants kicking the entire state out of the union...Not a big problem, we took a pen and labeled it ourselves, but boo on the proofreaders. It lowers the quality a bit.3. COLOR pages would have massively enhanced this topic and helped connect young children to the topic. Pages are black and white line work only much like copied worksheets from any classroom. When purchasing materials for small children, finding high quality colorful lessons is a nice thing...it certainly draws the attention of the child and this book would have REALLY benefited from that.Overall a good find and a good value for the price.

Great intro to Geography for little ones By frequent buyer I use this with my 3 year old daughter and think it's a great introduction to the world of Geography and is extremely age appropriate. My daughter loves putting the reward stickers on the pages as she completes them. I'd recommend any of the Pre-K books in this line.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This workbook at least covers geography instead of ignoring it! By ScotFlower At Costco they were selling a Pre-Kingergarten Jumbo Workbook by DK for approximately $11. The Jumbo book ended up containing all 5 of the DK workbooks for pre-schoolers. I think this book would be perfect for a 3 year old.The geography section has a title page with the globe, a table of contents, followed by each worksheet. All images are in black and white so they can be colored, but the pages do include some color on the borders and edges - in my copy its a purple-pink. The top of each worksheet has a fact to read and below it some sort of interactive question/instructions. Sometimes the fact and the worksheet below seem disconnected in the flow of the concepts, but as a parent you can always do the worksheet part first then read the fact if that makes more sense. Also some of the facts really need more teaching / images to ensure the kid is actually understanding and learning the info... esp when the worksheet is disconnected so enforcing that learning. The one biggest failing of the workbook is the lack of repetition so you will need to find other materials to flush out your geography curriculum. The geography section covers: natural vs. man-made, solar system, counting, reading/naming objects, earth is a sphere, flat maps vs. globes, directions/prepositions, travel needs depending on the ecosystem, plot on a map based on directions, compass, mountain ranges on maps, continents, countries, United States of America, cities, neighborhoods, comparing size, map symbols, map keys, and very basic ecosystem info for forests, deserts, islands, oceans, lakes, and rivers. Blank practice pages are included to complete the projects like creating a map or directions in your own neighborhood. To get the best learning out of this workbook, you need to complete the workbook with your child following the parent instructions at the back of the book. You will also need a globe of Earth in spin-able 3D, manipulatives of the solar system and/or book with further information on the planets, flat maps especially of where you live and your country, ability to go on a walk or drive around your neighborhood to write down directions, access to something like google maps to get a sky-view of the neighborhood to create a neighborhood map, and some more information/resources on ecosystems, mountains, volcanoes, islands, etc. as these topics in particular were covered so miniscully.Overall, you need to do some prep to get the most out of this book. However, out of all the workbooks I have seen, this at least covers geography instead of ignoring it!

Does everyone in the US have an equal chance to "make it"? What explains the enduring power of racism and sexism? How does our sociopolitical system generate inequality? These are just a few of the questions explored in this accessible introduction to the complex problem of social stratification. Kasturi DasGupta clearly explains the social and economic mechanisms that serve to preserve and even deepen social stratification in the US. Enriched with case studies and examples throughout, her text is carefully designed both to engage students and to help them see past cultural myths to grasp the underpinnings and consequences of social inequality.

Great Foundational Tool for Understanding Social Stratification in the U.S. By Mary Jane Kober Excellent introduction to the topic of social stratification. I highly recommend it to students, teachers and practitioners who want a good grounding in the causes and consequences of inequality in the United States. It is nicely divided into three sections: Part 1 sets the stage with structures (e.g capitalism, globalization) that generate, deepen and perpetuate inequality. Part 2 addresses the intersectionality between ideologies such as race, gender, and class. Part 3 asks if change is possible and covers such topics as the role of unions and the importance of social justice and social movements. There is a glossary at the end of the book that is wonderful and as a graduate student I found it very helpful. This book is written very succinctly, incorporates historical moments that are integral to understanding the foundation of our capitalist society, and gives concrete examples that illustrate the author's points in a clear, easy to understand format. It serves as a great foundational tool for understanding social stratification.

By Amazon Customer In her seminal work on the Causes and Consequences of Inequality, Dr. DasGupta has eloquently and comprehensively covered every area that has led to the gross Inequality in our society today. She has done extensive research, and documented in great detail, the causes of the inequality in the US, which has a higher rate than most other developed nations.DasGupta demonstrates how this inequality damages every aspect of our legal, political, economic, and social systems. In the final chapters, Dr. Dasgupta encourages us to be part of a collective social movement to create change. It won't happen until a critical majority of Americans recognize that it is in EVERYONE'S interest to move in a new direction. It has been many years since I have read what would be considered a "textbook," and was somewhat intimidated by it, but once I began reading this masterpiece, I found it to be a compelling read. It offered ideas and solutions that had never occurred to me.This book became personal too, because I am familiar with many of the people, and situations, involved.Patricia A. By A & M Basu This book is very informative and details various aspects of inequalities and their ramifications in our society today. Dr. Dasgupta painstakingly broke down these facets and reconstructed by determining the predominant (root) causes and explains their broad implications. The author was able to delineate these topics in a way that is understandable not just for academicians per se, but for general population as well. As one starts to read this book, it becomes quite clear almost from the outset that Dr. Dasgupta had thought through these issues not simply as a researcher, but as someone with authenticity. It was evident that she truly believed in what she wrote and provided the path forward conclusively by illustrating specific recommendations and meaningful comments. Policy makers should read this book.

Best Ebook PDF How to Write a Thesis (MIT Press), by Umberto Eco

By the time Umberto Eco published his best-selling novel The Name of the Rose, he was one of Italy's most celebrated intellectuals, a distinguished academic and the author of influential works on semiotics. Some years before that, in 1977, Eco published a little book for his students, How to Write a Thesis, in which he offered useful advice on all the steps involved in researching and writing a thesis -- from choosing a topic to organizing a work schedule to writing the final draft. Now in its twenty-third edition in Italy and translated into seventeen languages, How to Write a Thesis has become a classic. Remarkably, this is its first, long overdue publication in English.

Eco's approach is anything but dry and academic. He not only offers practical advice but also considers larger questions about the value of the thesis-writing exercise. How to Write a Thesis is unlike any other writing manual. It reads like a novel. It is opinionated. It is frequently irreverent, sometimes polemical, and often hilarious. Eco advises students how to avoid "thesis neurosis" and he answers the important question "Must You Read Books?" He reminds students "You are not Proust" and "Write everything that comes into your head, but only in the first draft." Of course, there was no Internet in 1977, but Eco's index card research system offers important lessons about critical thinking and information curating for students of today who may be burdened by Big Data.

How to Write a Thesis belongs on the bookshelves of students, teachers, writers, and Eco fans everywhere. Already a classic, it would fit nicely between two other classics: Strunk and White and The Name of the Rose.

This MIT Press edition will be available in three different cover colors.

How to Write a Thesis (MIT Press), by Umberto Eco

Review

Although first published in Italian in 1977, before Eco ( The Name of the Rose) became an internationally renowned novelist, this guide to writing a thesis -- originally aimed at Italian humanities undergraduates -- brims with practical advice useful for writing research papers.... His advocacy of index card files to organize data seems quaintly nostalgic in the age of laptops and online databases, but it only underscores the importance of applying these more sophisticated tools to achieve the thoroughness of the results that he advocates.

(Publishers Weekly)

How to Write a Thesis is full of friendly, no-bullshit, entry-level advice on what to do and how to do it, illustrated with lucid examples and -- significantly -- explanations of why, by one of the great researchers and writers in the post-war humanities … Best of all, the absolutely superb chapter on how to write is worth triple the price of admission on its own.

(Robert Eaglestone Times Higher Education)

How to Write a Thesis remains valuable after all this time largely thanks to the spirit of Eco's advice. It is witty but sober, genial but demanding -- and remarkably uncynical about the rewards of the thesis, both for the person writing it and for the enterprise of scholarship itself.... Some of Eco's advice is, if anything, even more valuable now, given the ubiquity and seeming omniscience of our digital tools.... Eco's humor never detracts from his serious intent. And anyway, even the sardonic pointers on cheating are instructive in their way.

(Scott McLemee Inside Higher Education)

Eco is a first-rate storyteller and unpretentious instructor who thrives on describing the twists and turns of research projects as well as how to avoid accusations of plagiarism.

(Jan Gardner Boston Globe)

The book's enduring appeal -- the reason it might interest someone whose life no longer demands the writing of anything longer than an e-mail -- has little to do with the rigors of undergraduate honors requirements. Instead, it's about what, in Eco's rhapsodic and often funny book, the thesis represents: a magical process of self-realization, a kind of careful, curious engagement with the world that need not end in one's early twenties. "Your thesis," Eco foretells, "is like your first love: it will be difficult to forget." By mastering the demands and protocols of the fusty old thesis, Eco passionately demonstrates, we become equipped for a world outside ourselves -- a world of ideas, philosophies, and debates.

(Hua Hsu The New Yorker)

Well beyond the completion of the thesis, Eco's manual makes for pleasant reading and is deserving of a place on the desks of scholars and professional writers. Even sections such as that recommending the combinatory system of handwritten index cards, while outdated in the digital age, can propose a helpful exercise in critical thinking, and add a certain vintage appeal to the book.

(Times Literary Supplement)

About the Author

Umberto Eco is an Italian semiotician, philosopher, literary critic, and novelist. He is the author of The Name of the Rose, Foucault's Pendulum, and The Prague Cemetery, all bestsellers in many languages, as well as a number of influential scholarly works.

This is why I bought the book, and having read it, I fully agree with the positive commentary in that review. I have now ordered a copy for my university's library, and I'll recommend it to all of my research students. Eco's specific area of academic specialisation may be very different from yours, but that should not deter you from finding out more about this book: I am a researcher in finance and accounting and still found the book to be remarkably relevant.

27 of 30 people found the following review helpful. Still relevant today By Genevieve D. Reading How to Write a Thesis by Umberto Eco, even an ‘updated’ version in this MIT Press edition, felt like a sweet exercise in futility. There’s something folksy and quaint about being told how to put notes on index cards and properly organize them and being given tips for using the library and talking to librarians. (Not too surprising, as Eco wrote this in the late seventies—almost forty years ago!) But with over twenty-three editions and countless translations, there’s something to be said about this just-won’t-die thesis-writing guide. It endures, even in a world of Dropbox and Evernote and Endnote and online style guides and, of course, the oracle of information—the internet. The reason for this is that Eco’s book actually has a lot more to say to people outside of academia, to those no longer writing long tracts of academic esoterica or using words like ‘juxtaposition,’ ‘asymmetricality,’ or ‘reconfigurations’ in everyday writing. How to Write a Thesis could be easily re-titled ‘How to Live a More Realized Life’ or something along those lines—tongue-in-cheek, of course, as this is Eco and despite all the rhapsody in his prose is actually quite funny. What Eco’s classic tome gives us is the kind of advice you might get from an inspiring college graduation speech. It resonates with wisdom about being more curious, about being more engaged in the world—which is wonderful advice, especially for those who stand on the precipice of maturity, where on one side is youthful idealism and optimism still, and on the other side, lingering over the horizon, is the embittered resignation and indifference of...middle age? Just because you’re not a hot young thing in your twenties anymore doesn’t mean you can’t experience that revelatory process of discovery in other aspects of life.Eco takes on the usual mechanics of the thesis-writing process—coming up with the right research question; outlining; collating notes—and expands on it so that it becomes a jumping off point to exploring the notions of creativity, originality, and attribution. There is a section on developing core ideas and then using those ideas to explore more peripheral ideas; often, the true thrust of a thesis comes in those minor works and footnotes. I also liked his ideas on how to approach the work of others. My favorite rule of thumb from the book is: “Work on a contemporary author as if he were ancient, and an ancient one as if he were contemporary … You will have more fun and write a better thesis.” Eco also has much to say on the obsession with spending too much time compiling information (he calls it the “alibi of photocopies”); it makes for a watered down, unfocused, blurry project. We’re all guilty of this in some way. How often do we bookmark and save articles we come across on the Web and never really get to? Eco is basically saying, ‘Don’t be a hoarder.’ Don’t do the equivalent of bottom trawling and hoping that there will be a prize fish in all the bycatch. One solution: Better outlining and a read-now attitude (don’t stockpile; read soon, and then decide to keep or toss).I know it’s weird to think this but reading How to Write a Thesis felt very homey. It was very much a feel-good book; like being treated to home cooking. It reminds the academic to not be so insulated and narcissistic (reality check: odds are, only a handful of people will ever read your work in its entirety). And it reminds the rest of us of the worth of slowing down and digesting information thoughtfully, with care and consideration (no skimming), and of the the worth of committing to a task.[Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley for an honest and candid review.]

Educational, albeit outdated By Christian Tietze It's an educational read, and it's great to reflect upon the workflow of a scholarly writer. Most of the tips are outdated. It was written in 1977 and doesn't take computers into account at all. Chances are you already have software to replace one or more of the various kinds of index cards Eco introduces: for example, they are used for reference management, for taking note of quotes, and for capturing ideas. To read Eco's book will help you understand what you're doing, though. And it may even inspire to tweak your workflow a bit.You may do well without this book if you find well-fitting internet resources. It's like it always is: to change the way you work, you have to take time and reflect upon your habits. Reading a book does a better job at changing habits than searching the web for bite-sized articles on particular problems.(Disclaimer: I read and own the German version and can't say anything about translator's notes about English conventions which are plain to see in Amazon's book preview.)

From the early days of the republic, American leaders knew that an unpredictable time bomb―the question of slavery―lay at the heart of national politics. An implicit understanding between North and South helped to keep the issue at bay: northern states, where slavery had been set on course for extinction via gradual emancipation, tacitly agreed to respect the property rights of southern slaveholders; in return, southerners essentially promised to view slaveholding as a practical evil and look for ways to get rid of it. By 1819–1820, however, westward expansion had brought the matter to a head. As Thomas Jefferson wrote at the time, a nation dealing with the politically implacable issue of slavery essentially held the "wolf" by the ears―and could neither let go nor hang on forever.

In Wolf by the Ears, John R. Van Atta discusses how the sectional conflict that led to the Civil War surfaced in the divisive fight over Missouri statehood. The first organized Louisiana Purchase territory to lie completely west of the Mississippi River and northwest of the Ohio, Missouri carried special significance for both pro- and anti-slavery advocates. Northern congressmen leaped out of their seats to object to the proposed expansion of the slave "empire," while slave-state politicians voiced outrage at the northerners’ blatant sectional attack. Although the Missouri confrontation ultimately appeared to end amicably with a famous compromise that the wily Kentuckian Henry Clay helped to cobble together, the passions it unleashed proved vicious, widespread, and long lasting.

Van Atta deftly explains how the Missouri crisis revealed the power that slavery had already gained over American nation building. He explores the external social, cultural, and economic forces that gave the confrontation such urgency around the country, as well as the beliefs, assumptions, and fears that characterized both sides of the slavery argument. Wolf by the Ears provides students in American history with an ideal introduction to the Missouri crisis while at the same time offering fresh insights for scholars of the early republic.

Review

Students and specialists have long needed a study of the Missouri Compromise that would take advantage of recent scholarship and lift the subject beyond the fine-grained detail of political and legislative negotiation. In Wolf by the Ears, Van Atta does both and more, analyzing the Missouri question in ways that put the entire issue into the broadest possible context. His wider lens not only produces a refreshing contribution to the history of the Early Republic but to the entire antebellum era. An excellent book.

(Harry L. Watson, University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill, author of Liberty and Power: The Politics of Jacksonian America)

Van Atta produces an incredibly readable and engaging work perfect for classroom use or as a refresher for those historians who need a compact summation of the latest scholarship surrounding this important historical moment in the early nation.

(James J. Gigantino II Missouri Historical Review)

In this engaging work, Van Atta... provides an in-depth analysis of the 1820 Missouri Compromise, a seminal event on the road to the Civil War...

(Choice)

Wolf by the Ears should be valued by scholars seeking a quick overview of antebellum American political history. More than just short, yet comprehensive, Van Atta’s account is comprehensible, which should make it especially valuable to students, who should welcome its inclusion on course syllabi.

Caporaso Well written and informative (minus one historical fact error regarding presidential order!). Van Atta places the Missouri Compromise into a broader socio-political context than historians have previously. It sets the stage for the debate in Washington, the north, the south, and the west and spends considerable time discussing how the compromise affected social and political behavior ending, in Van Atta's opinion, inevitably to the Civil War. The only criticisms that I have is that the reader needs to know a fair amount of American History to understand what is going on, and that so many persons are introduced, it can at times be difficult to keep them straight. Diagrams of political affiliations would have been helpful.

Informative and readable By History Prof Geared toward students and non-specialists, this is a solid introduction to the Missouri Compromise, to the sectional crisis more generally, and to how the West fit into nineteenth-century Americans' competing visions for the nation. It is an engaging narrative that makes for an enjoyable read.

Smith The makers of the US Constitution thought slavery was in decline, so accepted several compromises that protected it. However, cotton growing boomed in the early 19th century, expanding into new southern slave-states and reinvigorating slavery. No longer hoping for its extinction, many northerners now feared its expansion would create a pro-slavery Congressional majority, while southerners wanted protection for this cornerstone of their economy. This is the background to a largely narrative account by John van Atta of the Missouri Crisis and the Compromise that resolved it. He argues that these were a major turning point in US history because the attempt to resolve the political, economic, and social issues affecting the West as well as North and South ended certain political certainties that had existed since the early republic.Previously, the Missouri Crisis was thought to concern only a small elite of national politicians, but van Atta shows it reflected widespread popular concerns. He starts by setting out both the complex background to the political debate and the grievances of ordinary people in all three sections of the United States, particularly in Missouri. He also examines the personalities of several political leaders, as these mattered in the small political elite. He concentrates first on northerners opposed to slavery in Missouri and pro-slavery southerners, who jointly caused the Crisis, then on Henry Clay, the main architect of the Compromise. This was only a short-term solution, but van Atta accepts that Clay other compromisers acted in good faith to avoid a sectional clash. Despite these good points, the book has two weaknesses.Although van Atta gives a clear account of the origins and development of the Crisis and Compromise, he is less sure on later events up to 1854, when it was superceded by the Kansas-Nebraska Act. He shows how the Compromise was regarded in North and South in this period but gives too little analysis of growing divisions in this period to add much to the earlier account. The second weakness is the writing style, with many clichés and italicising in case readers misses his point, suggesting dumbing-down. It is also unclear for much of the book what he thinks the Crisis was about. At the start, he suggests that many Americans thought that slavery dominated the concept of nation-building. Although he mentions this theme several times, it is only at the very end he mentions the competing concepts of a grouping of sovereign states or the more modern one of a centralised nation.Van Atta has produced a broad description of the events of 1819 to 1821 and their background based on recent scholarship, emphasising social and economic developments and local events rather than national politics. Despite weaknesses, it is a good single-volume introduction to the Missouri Crisis and Compromise.
