What does it mean to be “in search of Aphrodite?” For most women, sex is complex, and more than a juxtaposition of body parts. Women sense the possibility of depth, meaning, even transcendence, but in a somatically disconnected, sexually superficial world, it can be difficult for a woman to discover her inner fire, define who she is sexually, and confidently communicate this to her partner.Part philosophy, part treatment manual, In Search of Aphrodite addresses women’s sexual problems from an inspiring, creative perspective, integrating Jungian Psychology and sex therapy. Readers will deepen their understanding of the sexual psyche and how this realm impacts women’s lives, as well as what the author calls the journey of Sexual IndividuationTM.  Chelsea Wakefield covers a variety of topics such as healing ancient wounds, resolving inner conflicts, exploring sexual essence, identity, scripts, primal instinct, desire, fantasy, longing, and more. She offers pathways to sexual enrichment and improved communication with a partner. Sexual archetypes are introduced and organized around the author’s Sexual Essence Wheel. Gatekeepers and Eros-inhibiting archetypes are described, along with what to do when treatment stalls.     This book is appropriate for:• Clinicians who are nervous about venturing into conversations about women’s sexuality• Clinicians who are comfortable with sexual topics and are curious about new interventions• Sex therapists who want a treatment model that acknowledges the multidimensional aspects of sexuality• Jungian analysts and Jungian oriented practitioners who want helpful tools for addressing sexual issues as an invitation into individuation     • Pastoral counselors and spiritual guidance practitioners who seek to heal souls wounded by sexual trauma and sex-negative teachings     • Women who want to explore their sexual psyche and define their sexual essence, and men who wish to better understand the sexual depths of women.Rich with case histories and an “Inner Cast of Characters” that clients can explore, this resource will help women discover joyful embodiment, innate eroticism, and sexual pleasure!

The importance of sexuality in individuation By Dale Emmet I had the awesome opportunity to experience Chelsea and her teachings live at a "Sexuality in Spiritual Direction" session at a retreat recently. There and in this book, Chelsea has such an interesting, integrating and easy to digest way of discussing the complex mystery of sex. By healing old wounds and scripts from family and society and understanding the sexual archetypes within us, women can access their own authentic sexual essence; develop a more comfortable connection to our own bodies; and bring forth the life force energy of eros. This embodiment of our instinctual self is vital to our mind-body-spirit balance and Chelsea is an important voice reminding us and educating us on the fact that sexuality is an important part of our individuation process. A highly recommend In Search of Aphrodite and Chelsea's Luminous Woman program.

Had this book been given to me then in my therapy sessions, I would have had a valuable resource with which to intellectually understand an ecstatic experience. Spirit wants us to know joy and pleasure, yet we aren't taught this by our mothers, by our religion or by our culture. Chelsea explains why this is, what good can come from the ecstatic experience, and how Eros evolves us. Eros is Spirit and God moving through us, softening the edges of the ego, helping us to know somatically the world as One. I value this thoroughly researched and compassionate overview of the Mystic's journey.

I love this book and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in exploring the state of female sexuality today. Chelsea Wakefield offers compelling insights throughout the book that can benefit any woman or practitioner working in the realm of women's issues. Wakefield's words and lessons are sure to be enlightening and eye-opening.

Great writers of the past whose works we still read and love will be read forever. They will survive the test of time. We remember authors of true genius because their writings are simply the best. Or . . . might there be other reasons that account for an author’s literary fate?   This original book takes a fresh look at our beliefs about literary fame by examining how it actually comes about. H. J. Jackson wrestles with entrenched notions about recognizing genius and the test of time by comparing the reputations of a dozen writers of the Romantic period—some famous, some forgotten. Why are we still reading Jane Austen but not Mary Brunton, when readers in their own day sometimes couldn’t tell their works apart? Why Keats and not Barry Cornwall, who came from the same circle of writers and had the same mentor? Why not that mentor, Leigh Hunt, himself?   Jackson offers new and unorthodox accounts of the coming-to-fame of some of Britain’s most revered authors and compares their reputations and afterlives with those of their contemporary rivals. What she discovers about trends, champions, institutional power, and writers’ conscious efforts to position themselves for posterity casts fresh light on the actual processes that lead to literary fame.

Those Who Write for Immortality: Romantic Reputations and the Dream of Lasting Fame, by H. J. Jackson

Review “[A] revelatory and delightful study . . . Jackson’s study should renew interest in the Romantic period and its writers—the famous and forgotten alike.”?Publishers Weekly (Publishers Weekly)“Jackson commands a lifetime of reading in a fluid, ceaselessly compelling history of the literary afterlife, of how over the centuries, our concepts of a writer’s immortality have morphed, mutated, double-backed.”—William Giraldi, The New Republic (William Giraldi The New Republic)“Those Who Write for Immortality is therefore a special book, a delightfully readable and reliable witness for a subject that sometimes seems out of fashion, as ideas of posterity appear either pointless or impossible, in literature or elsewhere.”—The American Scholar (The American Scholar)“A thoughtful, elegant, and subtly humorous exploration of the specific circumstances that enable literary reputations to flourish over the long term.”—Joshua Rothman, The New Yorker (Joshua Rothman The New Yorker)“[A] fascinating new study of literary reputation . . . [a] meticulously researched, elegantly written and wonderfully subtle account of the reputational fortunes, over time, of a select group of Romantic period writers.”—The Literary Review of Canada (The Literary Review of Canada)“[A] spirited and always enlightening meditation on literary fame.”—Carlin Romano, The Chronicle of Higher Education (Carlin Romano The Chronicle of Higher Education)“[A] lively and immensely knowledgeable book.”—Richard Holmes, The New York Review of Books (Richard Holmes The New York Review of Books)

For the question more than for the answer By Shalom Freedman It is not merit alone but a host of subsidiary factors which enable literary immortality. Wordsworth was helped by the tourist rush to the Lake District- Jane Austen by a nephew's biography, Keats by dying young. Comparing the Romantic writers we consider great in comparison to others known today only by scholars Jackson makes the case that the ancillary elements are crucial importance.Beginning her work with an informative survey of Classical Roman views of literary fame she seems to suggest that the realm of immortal poets might well be broadened. However in a most interesting review of this book the critic Adam Kirsch suggests that most modern poets do not have their eyes on the realm of Immortality the way poets once did. He attributes this to the democratization of 'immortality' in today's new media world, and also to the sense that when Humanity itself is conceived as mortal the question of individual mortality seems less relevant. In any case Jackson's study focuses on a question which has been of supreme interest to poets, and provides an interesting and for me new perspective on the way Literary reputation is acquired and maintained.

A fresh look at the construction of the canon of English Romantic poetry By Alexander Zubatov This book presents a discussion of the sometimes fickle trajectories of the posthumous reputations of Romantic poets. It is a worthwhile read for anyone who naively believes that the Canon is a purely rational construct in which the cream will inevitably rise to the top on the strength of its undeniable aesthetic merit. Prof. Jackson discusses cases of authors such as Wordsworth who achieved widespread fame and recognition during their lifetimes and never let go of it in the afterlife, cases such as Robert Southey or Walter Scott, i.e., authors whose reputations soared and then plummeted, others such as John Clare who were neglected in their day and for a long while afterwards but became belated "recovery projects" finally earning their place in the Canon and others who have been unjustly neglected to this day. She also attempts to discuss various theories of how posthumous reputation/immortality is attained and to discuss the most significant factors that may play a role in the process, with actual aesthetic quality being only one among many and requiring only that the author's work be above a certain threshold to qualify him for consideration among the "greats," with other relevant factors being the quantity of the author's work, his biography, his appeal to multiple audiences (non-readers, readers, critics and other authors), influential works written about him by critics, his own efforts to elevate his reputation, etc. All of this is interesting and enlightening, and Prof. Jackson's writing is not bogged down by academic jargon or what non-humanities-types would call "theoretical mumbo jumbo" (though I'm personally fine with such language where it has its place). Two small criticisms:(1) Although a quantitative approach to the humanities propounded by people such as Franco Moretti and Colin Martindale sometimes yields results that are short of illuminating, I do think that this is one place where numbers would have helped. Something like what Charles Murray did in his Human Accomplishment or Martindale in The Clockwork Muse, where reputation and influence were systematically quantified through tracking relevant mentions and that sort of thing, would be much appreciated in a work like this, because otherwise I'm not totally sure if I can trust the author's opinion about who's, as it were, on top and what factors got them there.(2) In a book that is about Romantic poetry, I would've appreciated a bit more actual Romantic poetry. In making the case that some of the lesser-known authors she discusses are just as Canon-worthy as the acknowledged greats, for instance, it might have helped to adduce and discuss an exemplar or two of the author's finest work, as otherwise the discussion of merit remains overly abstract. The book, as it stands, is only 228 pages of text (not including footnotes), so adding another twenty pages of discussion along these lines wouldn't have made it unwieldy, and it certainly would have been relevant. It's hard, otherwise, to join the author in her conclusions that a certain poet is/was criminally overlooked while another might have been overlooked because he just wasn't good enough/didn't stand the test of time. Relatedly, terms like "criminally overlooked" or "not good enough" are mine; Prof. Jackson shies away from any such strong evaluations, and I actually would've enjoyed a more personal touch on her part. If Harold Bloom were writing this, the book would've been full of aesthetic judgments, and while he can go overboard in making sweeping pronouncements from on high, it seems Prof. Jackson was a bit sheepish in offering her own opinions. You finish this book and have no sense of whether or not she actually likes/loves/hates/prefers a given poet, and this is a bit frustrating in a book that is intended to be all about literary reputations. But, these flaws excepted, I do feel like a book like this is far more eye-opening upon the subject of the Canon Wars than any of the mindless vitriol loosely thrown around by both traditionalists and would-be-reformers.

The transition from school mathematics to university mathematics is seldom straightforward. Students are faced with a disconnect between the algorithmic and informal attitude to mathematics at school, versus a new emphasis on proof, based on logic, and a more abstract development of general concepts, based on set theory. The authors have many years' experience of the potential difficulties involved, through teaching first-year undergraduates and researching the ways in which students and mathematicians think. The book explains the motivation behind abstract foundational material based on students' experiences of school mathematics, and explicitly suggests ways students can make sense of formal ideas. This second edition takes a significant step forward by not only making the transition from intuitive to formal methods, but also by reversing the process- using structure theorems to prove that formal systems have visual and symbolic interpretations that enhance mathematical thinking. This is exemplified by a new chapter on the theory of groups. While the first edition extended counting to infinite cardinal numbers, the second also extends the real numbers rigorously to larger ordered fields. This links intuitive ideas in calculus to the formal epsilon-delta methods of analysis. The approach here is not the conventional one of 'nonstandard analysis', but a simpler, graphically based treatment which makes the notion of an infinitesimal natural and straightforward. This allows a further vision of the wider world of mathematical thinking in which formal definitions and proof lead to amazing new ways of defining, proving, visualising and symbolising mathematics beyond previous expectations.

It deals with the basics of mathematics and treats them in a clear but thorough way. Although it is probably not essential, it is a good accompaniment to anybody starting a mathematics degree. They take the approach that one should already be familiar with an idea (via examples) before seeing its definition. This works well, although sometimes the effect is that the pace is slow and the exposition is drawn out.

Excellent Book for the High School Mathsters By Dr. Charles Saunders This book was written for those inquisitive/advanced high school students (6th formers in England) to give them an introduction to the number systems, formalization in mathematics and the concept of proof. Stewart is well-known for his clear writing and this book is an excellent example.

In Living Buddhism, Julia Cassaniti explores Buddhist ideas of impermanence, nonattachment, and intention as they are translated into everyday practice in contemporary Thailand. Although most lay people find these philosophical concepts difficult to grasp, Cassaniti shows that people do in fact make an effort to comprehend them and integrate them as guides for their everyday lives. In doing so, she makes a convincing case that complex philosophical concepts are not the sole property of religious specialists and that ordinary lay Buddhists find in them a means for dealing with life's difficulties. More broadly, the book speaks to the ways that culturally informed ideas are part of the psychological processes that we all use to make sense of the world around us.

In an approachable first-person narrative style that combines interview and participant-observation material gathered over the course of two years in the community, Cassaniti shows how Buddhist ideas are understood, interrelated, and reinforced through secular and religious practices in everyday life. She compares the emotional experiences of Buddhist villagers with religious and cultural practices in a nearby Christian village. Living Buddhism highlights the importance of change, calmness (as captured in the Thai phrase jai yen, or a cool heart), and karma; Cassaniti's narrative untangles the Thai villagers’ feelings and problems and the solutions they seek.

Living Buddhism: Mind, Self, and Emotion in a Thai Community, by Julia Cassaniti

Review “With a beautiful blend of stories, research, and her own field experience, Julia Cassaniti unlocks the  secrets of creating calmness and the power of letting go. Living Buddhism is a must-read for everyone— expert and nonexpert alike—interested in how our cultures shape our emotional lives.”—Hazel Markus,Davis-Brack Professor in the Behavioral Sciences, Stanford University, coauthor of Social Psychology"In Living Buddhism, Julia Cassaniti convincingly shows that complex philosophical concepts are not the sole property of religious specialists but play a central role in providing lay Buddhists a means for dealing with life's difficulties as well. She integrates the fields of Buddhist studies and anthropology well, showing effectively how they inform and can learn from each other. Her storytelling makes us care about the Thai villagers and why they react the way they do to the problems and challenges in their lives."―Susan M. Darlington, Hampshire College, author of The Ordination of a Tree: The Thai Buddhist Environmental Movement"Living Buddhism is written in an engaging journalistic style. The reader shares Julia Cassaniti's struggle to come to terms with the worldview she encounters in the northern Thai village of Mae Jaeng and, like her, arrives at a hard-won appreciation of the local perspective. Cassaniti’s intimate relationships in the community allow her to provide detailed case studies that nicely illustrate the complexities of applying Buddhist concepts to everyday life."―Nancy Eberhardt, Knox College, author of Imagining the Course of Life: Self-Transformation in a Shan Buddhist Community  "This book sparkles with normalcy, meaning that it neither seeks to impress the reader by hiding behind theory nor obscures the subject with overinterpretation. Julia Cassaniti laughed, danced, and cried with a small group of villagers in Northern Thailand for extended periods of time. She writes with refreshing clarity and humility about these relationships. This allows the readers to experience the abiding sense of impermanence that sustains people through everyday suffering and learn with them how to become both Thai and Buddhist without hardly noticing."—Justin Thomas McDaniel, University of Pennsylvania, author of The Lovelorn Ghost and the Magical Monk: Practicing Buddhism in Modern Thailand

By Chaz I read the book for an Anthropology class and compared to the few ethnographies I have read, this is one of my favorites. Even if you are not an aspiring anthropologist like myself, there are still many nuggets of interesting ideas and beautiful stories in Cassaniti's novel. The price was rather pricey for such a small book and a college student, which is why I gave it four stars. Nonetheless, the book is a great and fast read.

This book brings together lectures and articles by the renowned historian of world Christianity, making them available, many for the first time, to scholars and students of world mission. While examining the many aspects that have characterized mission, indigenous Christianity, and colonialism in modern Africa, The Missionary Movement in Christian History has a far broader reach. Essays such as “The Gospel as the Prisoner and Liberator of Culture” reveal the paradoxes of the Christian movement as a whole in discussing how different primitive Mediterranean Christianity is from early Catholicism, from Celtic monasticism, from Reformation Protestantism, and from Nigerian Spirit Christianity. Andrew Walls shows how the central question for Christianity has always been one of identity in many different forms, a phenomenon revealed at each stage of its history by the missionary movement. What this means for theology, however, has hardly been explored. This is the subtext of Walls’ work, providing extraordinary insights and successful counters to secular critiques of world Christianity.

The varied articles are loosely connected by common themes focusing on the missionary processes related to Christian conversion through history and throughout the world. Walls repeatedly demonstrates a keen understanding of the expansion of Christianity through divine salvation that he describes in terms of "translation." For Walls, Christ actually grows through the work of mission, as the Divine is translated into specific humanity. Unfortunately, the format creates a lack of fluidity, a consistent redundancy and an unnecessary wordiness. In the first section of his book, the articles focus on the way Christianity is shared and experienced among cultures and at different times in history. Walls explains the paradox of Christianity's universal message of salvation in Jesus Christ alone that is experienced locally within one's culture, relations and history.According to Walls, the way the church grasps this concept of a localized Christianity determines its effectiveness in mission and missionary endeavors. This is especially significant as the Christian center shifts, takes root and expands outside the West according to Walls.Walls asserts that the task of discipling the nations "is about the translation of Scripture into thought and action, as the word about Christ is brought to bear on the points of reference within each culture, the things by which people know themselves and recognize where they belong." (86)This presents a paradox to Walls. He writes, "On one hand God accepts us in Christ just as we are with all of our distinctives still on us. On the other he accepts us in order that we may become something different; that we may be transformed out of the ways of this world into the image of Christ." (54) It is especially in the articles about Africa that Walls discusses the challenge of transmiting the mission of the church to other cultures. The articles in the final section on missionary movement cover a variety of topics including historic strengths and weaknesses in mission studies, the missionary vocation, non-Western Christian art, 19th Century missionaries, the American missionary movement, the role of missionary societies and the general state of the missionary movement. These center on the dynamics of missions during shifts in the Christian church as a whole. He shows the significant contributions by missionaries who range from uneducated laborers to physicians and university educated priests. He seems to suggest that possessing a pioneering spirit and a willingness to immerse oneself in a peoples' culture for the gospel's sake contributes to missionary success as much as a proper education.Walls devotes a chapter to the characteristics of the American missionary movement. He compares the nature of it to the American entrepreneurial spirit. He writes, "The linking of entrepreneurial activity, efficient organization, and conspicuous financing, which was characteristic of American business, became characteristic of American Christianity." (231) He elaborates that the American missionary movement has been marked by vigorous expansionism combined with adaptability and drive to tackle problems and find solutions. The final chapter of the book offers a sense of summary of the modern flux of the missionary movement and Christianity in general by again emphasizing the recession of the Church in Europe and North America and its expansion "everywhere else." (257) This point leads Walls to suggest that the next phase of missionary movement must incorporate sending and receiving, fellowship among a broader context of Christians, and sharing with each other the ultimate product that is the gospel of Jesus Christ. What The Missionary Movement in Christian History lacks in terms of coherence and flow due to its format, it somewhat makes up for with its depth of and emphasis on its main themes that are repeated throughout the articles.I think the following statement summarizes Walls' main message, "It is not possible to have too much of the localizing and indigenizing principle which makes the faith thoroughly at home, nor too much of that universalizing principle which is in constant tension with it, and which links that local community with its `domestic' expression of faith in the same Christ of Christians of other times and places. It is possible only to have too little of either." (30)I am not ready to concede the presumed inevitability of the recession of Christianity throughout the West despite Walls' suggestions of it in this book.

30 of 39 people found the following review helpful. good on many counts By A Customer Ah, leave it to Orbis. Walls's book _TMMCH_ is superb because in it he balances a broad, theoretical view of missions with more intensive discussions of specific missions. He has, so to speak, both vision and insight. His prose is for most part light and fluid. His discussion of medical missions and, especially, non-Western art was really superb. As for the book's flaws: 1) I was astounded to see that it has no bibliography and bummed that it has a skimpy index. 2) The intensive studies are at times repetitive and arcane. 3) Walls borders pretty close to latitudinarianism by all but saying there are no essential facets, even dogmas, of the Christian faith. He lays so much weight on the "local expressions" of the Faith that he is rather nonchalant about what must stay and what can be lost. Yes, he even uses the word "Christianities" (pg. 239).Ironically, since Walls's Evangelical perspective often smacks of anti-Catholic, anti-centralized, anti-dogmatic ecclesiology, his book was a superb defense of the reality (and divine wisdom) of doctrinal development, and, in turn, much of what the Roman Catholic Church has done for centuries. I'm a Protestant seriously considering reconciliation with the RCC, so Walls' book was an unexpected boost in that direction. Walls virtually demands that different ages have different doctrinal and devotional foci. That's why, e.g., George Salmon's barbed observation that it is strange to see popes wax about Mary in most of their writings, while her name appears in so little of the NT, betrays the notoriously a-historical Protestant view of doctrine. In each age, in each "new world", God knows what aspects of the deposit of faith the Church needs to focus on for His glory and Kingdom and He guides His Church to present that deeper understanding of Revelation. All the same, I was frustrated with Walls because he wants to have his cake and eat it too. He vaguely refers to essentials of Christianity (which he unwittingly - or ungratefully - draws from Christian Tradition) and yet all but denies dogmatic essentials. He seems to view the historically unifying dogmas/practices among Christians of all ages as mere neat coincidences rather than divinely established essentials for the Church in every place in every era.But my review runneth over...

Exit West, Enter Africa By Amazon Customer Entitled "The Transmission of Christian Faith," his first section deals with a historical overview of missions. In six essays he posits that missiological expansion was really only an episode in Christian history, a blip on the screen. But instead of downplaying its importance, Walls conversely highlights both the diversity and universality of Christianity as expressed in this movement. In one of the essays, the process is displayed in six phases moving from the apostle Paul to Europe and then on to Africa. He deals largely with the interaction between the spread of the gospel and how it transforms culture, so he hints at Africa's importance in this section. In the second section he makes a transition to a clear emphasis on Africa. He interacts with the primal religions of Africa as well as with African Christianity in this section. He identifies exponential growth patterns and charismatic cultural tendencies that now characterize the African Christian Church. However, most interesting is his insistence in making a distinction between the history of the African Church and the history of Christian missions there. Whereas missions in Africa was historically led by Europeans, Walls argues that the evangelical revival in the African church was truly indigenous. Part three sets the stage for missiology. Walls believes there is a new era in Christian theology that is largely due to the demographic shift in global Christianity. He sees theology being shaped more by southern Christians than western ones. Issues like non-western art, scholarship, medicine and organizational methodology highlight the generational and gradual shift in values in southern countries. Walls believes that "Christians outside Africa will have to make some responses to the questions raised in the African arena" (146). In his preface, the author reminds the reader that this is not a book for the absolute beginner. Even the experienced player may not "get it" on first reading a given tune, but "You can expect to enjoy the process of learning... [and experience] the joy of recreating a traditional tune, of making it your own." This is the teacher/ student pact in effect throughout this marvelous book, written for the literary as much as the musical connoisseur. Although no classical violin experience is needed, you will need to know how to hold the fiddle and bow, and be able to play at least simple tunes in the first position. Having the ability to read music will enable you to follow the bowing patterns and left-hand techniques which the author feels are crucial in grasping the playing style. This book comes with an extended online audio recording.

Peter Cooper had me playing--using the term loosely--the Irish Washerwoman in no time. Each song introduces a new element to add to your arsenel of Irish fiddling technique: slurs, grace notes, variations, combining tunes into sets, bowing patterns, and on and on. Most tunes are preceded by a brief lesson: advice, a description of what's coming in the next tune, a breakdown of the patterns, or bars or techniques to practice before trying the tune, etc. Tunes progress in difficulty quite quickly for a beginner. I've got a lot to work on already and I'm only up to tune #6. But I'm having a great time and enjoying Mr. Cooper's selections and advice. There are at least seven tunes in this volume that can be found on Bothy Band albums, such as Butterfly (a version of which is also the haunting tune in the film Secret of Roan Inish). In other words, if you like traditional Irish fiddle music, you'll find some of your favorites in this book. Be sure to purchase this book with its companion cd. Cooper plays each tune in the book: it is invaluable to listen to the rhythms and intonation of the tunes played by a real musician. While I'm no expert, it's difficult to imagine a better organized, more inspiring, collection of tunes. If you're in the mood to fiddle, this is a book to try.

I would give it 10 stars out of 5 By Ferbose This is simply the best book purchase I have ever made.I learned the violin at 7 and stopped when I was 14. Now at 28 I decided to pick it up again. My friend told me that Irish fiddling is great for solos, and I have to agree. Irish fiddle tunes provide its own rythm so that solo violin does not sound bland. One of the frustrating thing about classical violin is that there are so few pieces written for solo violin, and they tend to be very difficult. This is a superb instructional book (and make sure you buy the version with the CD). In three weeks I am learning my sixth song and with each song I learn new techniques and idoims. The book starts with simple tunes and becomes increasingly complex and challenging. But even the simple songs are very tuneful and "Irish." The book is much more than a collection of scores but a self-teaching guide to understanding and playing Irish fiddle. Being Asian, I really enjoy all the tales and additional info about Irish music that help me understand where this music comes from. Lacking any talent in violin playing, when I ordered the book I thought it might take a year or so for me to learn something, but now it looks like in three months I can start entertaining my friends with a few tunes. If I HAD THIS BOOK AS A TEENAGER, I PORBABLY WOULD NOT HAVE STOPPED PLAYING THE VIOLIN BACK THEN.

20 of 20 people found the following review helpful. TEN Stars - And order the edition that comes with CDs By Richard Tucker Mr. Cooper has done what so few have done in teaching us to play fiddle. He has progressively placed each tune from simple to moderately complex, beginning to end, through the book. But the best of this book is the (OPTIONAL) two CD version which has him starting at a very easy pace for beginners. Toward the end of CD #2 he is playing at a faster but still followable pace for the student to grasp. Most accompanying CDs are an "Ain't I great?" show of the author's abilities. Instead, Peter Cooper puts away his ego and steps you through how to perform a finger a roll or a slur the Irish way.I love this book. It gave me the ability to join in at many local sessions with confidence.Update:Another reviewer was disappointed that s/he ordered this book, but failed to realize that their book did not come with CDs. These reviews (like this one that you are reading now) are linked to two editions of this book; one that includes 2 CDs, and another (same book) that does not include the CDs. This is a very common situation when buying music instruction books. So, the Reder Reviews can innocently mislead you. Order carefully! Make your item selection on the information from the Web Site Vendor, not from reviewers comments. If you are an aspiring Irish Fiddler and- don't have access to a teacher, or- want additional "tutoring" between your fiddle classes, or- you're frustrated trying to keep up with the playing speed of other master fiddlers' recordings, then I highly recommend spending the extra money for the edition of this book that includes 2 CDs. See my earlier review to find out why I appreciate Pete's work on these CDs!See you at the pub!LL

    Review

"… this book remains a highly recommended introduction to Galois theory along the more classical lines. It contains many exercises and a wealth of examples, including a pretty application of finite fields to the game solitaire. … provides readers with insight and historical perspective; it is written for readers who would like to understand this central part of basic algebra rather than for those whose only aim is collecting credit points."―Zentralblatt MATH 1322

Praise for the Third Edition:"This edition preserves and even extends one of the most popular features of the original edition: the historical introduction and the story of the fatal duel of Evariste Galois. … These historical notes should be of interest to students as well as mathematicians in general. … after more than 30 years, Ian Stewart’s Galois Theory remains a valuable textbook for algebra undergraduate students."―Zentralblatt MATH, 1049

"The penultimate chapter is about algebraically closed fields and the last chapter, on transcendental numbers, contains ‘what-every-mathematician-should-see-at-least-once,’ the proof of transcendence of pi. … The book is designed for second- and third-year undergraduate courses. I will certainly use it."―EMS Newsletter

The work of Carl Jung (1875-1961) remains an influential presence in psychology today. The Writings of Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) are assuming greater importance in the psychological conception of the human mind. The two together offer a rational and scientific explanation of the collective unconscious and life after death. Jung’s visions of the collective unconscious are supplemented by Swedenborg’s dual consciousness. The human mind is born immortal and continues life after death in its spiritual body. Jung’s description of the process of individuation is illustrated by Swedenborg’s details about regeneration. In both cases, human personality development starts in this life and continues in the afterlife to eternity. The mental health of the individual in the afterlife is dependent on acquiring in this life altruistic concerns and habits of positive thinking and interacting with others. This requires that we know and manage the psychic forces that shape our development.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. details have remained few or nonexistent regarding what life after death is like and how people then live By Leon James Human immortality has been of deep interest to many people for hundreds of years or more. Almost everyone experiences anxiety at the thought of dying. Death has been an impenetrable mystery in all of literature in science, philosophy and religion. Those who believe in life after death have practically no information about that life. Hundreds of thousands of people have reported having a near death experience (NDE) and dozens of books have been published of such accounts. Despite this however, details have remained few or nonexistent regarding what life after death is like and how people then live. There is a desperate need for many people to understand rationally what is death and what happens afterward. The books of Jung and Swedenborg are unique in modern science literature in that together they provide a full account of dying, death, and the afterlife lifestyles that exist there. Is heaven for real? Is there a hell? Why does God keep people in hell? What are the societies of the afterlife in which everyone lives after death? Can you talk to the departed? What is the role of religion in the afterlife? How long does it take between dying and being resuscitated from death into the afterlife? What kind of body do we then have and is it capable of pleasure? Are there marriages in the afterlife? These questions and many more are answered fully in the combined books of Jung and Swedenborg. Both of these authors were capable of being conscious of the afterlife and both were able to communicate with many who were there, some of whom they knew in this world before they passed on. This book presents many passages from both authors that are easily overlooked in the original given the dozens of volumes that they each published. When brought together in this collection with ample explanations by the author there is a striking realization that these two scientists have totally demystified death and dying, and have given us observational and empirical proof that life after death exists, and what it’s like. The anxiety of death vanishes with the certainty of our immortality. But more than that, we are given the rational means of deciding how we want to prepare for that life while we are still here. We are immeasurably advantaged when we can understand the cause-effect connection that exists between our habits of thinking and doing in this life and our habits of thinking and doing in the afterlife. Our eternal happiness or unhappiness is at stake. This book helps us to understand how we can control our destiny in eternity.

19 of 19 people found the following review helpful. Too Brief By Mitch This book is written in a very staccato fashion. This emphasizes the near outline nature of the information. There are entire books on applying anagrams to writing. This booklet is like a Cliff Notes approach. Fine as far as an introduction goes, but you'll need more to avoid cliched character arcs. For fuller description, I suggest "Believable Characters: Creating with Enneagrams" by Laurie Schnebly. It is much more comprehensive.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Highly recommended to the writer wanting to know how develop believable ... By Amazon Andy This is a concise, introductory book on using the Enneagram for developing complete, satisfying character arcs for your story. It explains the nine archetypes and shows how to use them to create realistic and believable characters. While a few other reviewers commented negatively on how it is just a very basic introduction to the Enneagram, this was actually for me one of its strong points. I didn't have to read some tome droning on with thousands of details that I would forget without spending countless hours of rereading. I certainly obtained a fundamental understanding of the archetypes and how I can use them convincingly to help develop believable story characters. David uses characters from Disney's "Maleficent" to demonstrate the efficacy and potency of the Enneagram for character development. Highly recommended to the writer wanting an effective tool to help develop believable characters.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A solid and precise addition to your writing quiver. By Dcortez There are longer books out there on the topic of character creation and development but for its brevity, it is precise, helpful and full of not just tips but examples on usage. It was to the point, illustrative and easy to understand with some solid application. What was really interesting to me was trying to pinpoint where I may fall on the diagram, as a personality, since I exhibit traits of 2-3 different archetypes. Then I realized that the lines on the diagram mean more than aesthetics, but have an interdependent function which gave me that "AHA!" moment of epiphany. I would recommend this book, it is cost effective, helpful, easy to read while not compromising on what's important and can only add to your knowledge.
