Beyond Biofatalism is a lively and penetrating response to the idea that evolutionary psychology reveals human beings to be incapable of building a more inclusive, cooperative, and egalitarian society. Considering the pressures of climate change, unsustainable population growth, increasing income inequality, and religious extremism, this attitude promises to stifle the creative action we require before we even try to meet these threats.

Beyond Biofatalism provides the perspective we need to understand that better societies are not only possible but actively enabled by human nature. Gillian Barker appreciates the methods and findings of evolutionary psychologists, but she considers their work against a broader background to show human nature is surprisingly open to social change. Like other organisms, we possess an active plasticity that allows us to respond dramatically to certain kinds of environmental variation, and we engage in niche construction, modifying our environment to affect others and ourselves. Barker uses related research in social psychology, developmental biology, ecology, and economics to reinforce this view of evolved human nature, and philosophical exploration to reveal its broader implications. The result is an encouraging foundation on which to build better approaches to social, political, and other institutional changes that could enhance our well-being and chances for survival.

Beyond Biofatalism: Human Nature for an Evolving World, by Gillian Barker

Review

Barker's focus on the conjunction of plasticity and stability, on viewing adaptations as a space of alternatively realizable equilibria between phenotypic distributions and environmental states, is as unique as it is insightful.

(Bruce Glymour, Kansas State University)

Beyond Biofatalism is an indispensable antidote to dangerous complaisance about contemporary social institutions and unwarranted resignation about our powers to improve them, both fostered by a superficial Darwinism. All who are committed to employing Darwin's insights about adaptation to understanding and ameliorating social life need to read this book.

(Alex Rosenberg, Duke University)

Deeply informed, cogently argued, and lucidly written, Beyond Biofatalism offers the most constructive discussion of evolutionary psychology currently available. If the evolutionary understanding of human thought and action is ever to fulfill its promise, it will be through absorbing Gillian Barker's wise counsel.

(Philip Kitcher, Columbia University)

Had you read only popularizers of evolutionary psychology, you might be forgiven for thinking that the message about human potential from evolutionary theory is grim. Gillian Barker, in this succinct and well-written book, shows that specific empirical findings in evolution, social psychology, and behavioral ecology―evolutionary psychology writ large―suggest that human biology, as biology more generally, is open to more varied social futures than is commonly thought

(Helen Longino, Stanford University)

Fascinating philosophical examination of the roots of human behavior.

(Library Journal)

This well-crafted study clearly and concisely reinterprets the nature/nurture and facts/value debates.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. This is socially emancipatory philosophy at its finest. By Graham C Bracken Dr. Barker follows through on her titular promise to get beyond a looming fatalism and does so by prying open two sets of possibilities: one of interpretation; one of action. The opening of interpretive possibilities is the most obvious success of the book. Most armchair understanding of human nature, or of the relationship between an organism and its environment, tends to invoke one of two views: either an ‘internalist’ view where the features of an organism are an internal affair – locked in despite its environment – or an ‘externalist’ view where the opposite is true; where the environment shapes the organism. This could apply to an animal in its physical habitat, an individual in her social context, or any number of analogues. The chief virtue of this book is that it gives the reader a handy vocabulary for identifying and understanding this range of positions while highlighting an intermediate range of interpretations – ‘interactionist’ ones – which hold that some kind of organism-environment entanglement is the most appropriate story we can tell. This possibility is introduced with a few high-powered examples – ‘niche-construction’ being one of the stickiest – but quickly goes subliminal so that many (if not most) examples start looking interactive and entangled quite naturally.(I’m sure much of this gestalt switch is a consequence of Barker’s keen eye for metaphor. She often draws the reader’s attention to common but loaded language and how it betrays an allegiance to one of the traditional positions. [Warning: this makes it nigh impossible to read a newspaper without having them jump out at you.] I’m quite sure her careful use of metaphor also eases the interpretive switch into seeing entanglement everywhere but I would have to read it again to see how. The important thing is that the switch happens and happens dramatically; these new perspectives start appearing everywhere.)However, none of these interpretive positions has a monopoly on the facts; each has preferred examples to bolster its plausibility but most of the time we can switch our interpretive hats with the same example. This becomes a big deal when we realize that interpretation is not neutral; it guides our beliefs about what is feasible, what is possible, and therefore guides our plans and projects. It’s out of this conceptual work, then, that Barker opens up whole new possibilities for action. Once we can see our relationships with various environments as plastic, interactive, and mutual, the old yarns about our fixed human nature (and the possible futures it excludes) start looking a little frayed. The scales drop from the proverbial eyes and our human future starts to burst with potential – all because of our newly interpreted nature. This is socially emancipatory philosophy at its finest.

Biofatalism is the idea that our animal nature makes some forms of social change unachievable. The public has an insatiable appetite for this idea and it has dominated the popular biology writing of the last 50 years. One cannot read these biofatalistic works without beginning to feel that their authors take a certain smug satisfaction in putting hope beyond our reach. And Lord knows, they’ve made a lot of money doing it!Barker’s main point is that the success of biofatalistic writers is due neither to their logic nor to their facts, but to the casual rhetoric they use to constrain our thinking. On her account, humans are not fated by their evolutionary history or by their current circumstances. We are responsive. To be responsive is to have the capacity to shape new means towards longstanding goals, and sometimes, even, to shape new goals in the face of unyielding circumstances. Therefore, the proper role of evolutionary knowledge is neither to tell us what we cannot do nor what we are helpless to avoid. Rather it is to guide us in making the adjustments that we can most profitably and painlessly make.Barker’s book is a great resource for optimists among us who would like to take biological facts and evolutionary history into account in making plans for our social future, but who don’t want to fall prey to the logical fallacies of biological determinism.

This brief monograph on the gamma function was designed by the author to fill what he perceived as a gap in the literature of mathematics, which often treated the gamma function in a manner he described as both sketchy and overly complicated. Author Emil Artin, one of the twentieth century's leading mathematicians, wrote in his Preface to this book, "I feel that this monograph will help to show that the gamma function can be thought of as one of the elementary functions, and that all of its basic properties can be established using elementary methods of the calculus."Generations of teachers and students have benefitted from Artin's masterly arguments and precise results. Suitable for advanced undergraduates and graduate students of mathematics, his treatment examines functions, the Euler integrals and the Gauss formula, large values of x and the multiplication formula, the connection with sin x, applications to definite integrals, and other subjects.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. An Intuitive Approach to the Gamma Function By jerbearmy This book is a quick, solid overview of the gamma function, which is the natural extension of the factorial function to arbitrary real (and complex) numbers. The gamma function is often quickly covered in advanced calculus and complex analysis courses, but in such cases the author usually just states and proves (or leaves to the exercises) the properties of gamma, leaving the student to wonder "where" these results come from. This book is unique in that it does not begin with gamma itself, but with convex and log-convex functions. It then proves that up to normalization, gamma is the only log-convex function satisfying the equation T(x+1) = xT(x). It then uses this characterization to motivate and prove the other well-known properties of gamma, such as Stirling's formula or the multiplication formula. For a reader whose background is not in classical analysis (my background is in operator algebras), it was very illuminating to see how a seemingly simple property like log-convexity could be used to systematically generate such results. Is a 38 page book worth $9? That's up to you. If you are just interested in knowing the properties of gamma, you likely have a list of them in another book on your shelf. But if you are interested to see "why" these results are true rather than only "proving" them, this book is a nice resource. As a mathematician who is trying to expand his classical analysis bag of tricks, I certainly do not regret this purchase.

If you want to learn everything about the gamma function, the advanced stuff made understandable, this is the book for you. His derivation of the multiplication formula is outstanding, relying on the true definition of the gamma function which he explains very well and leads up to the theorem.

Without having the books in front of you, it might be difficult figuring out which intro anglo concertina book is the best choice. This is a solid, well-written book, and all the other ones are comparatively terrible for one reason or another. For the sake of comparison:Mick Bramich's Absolute Beginners' Concertina-- Seems to use a bizarre tab system, is REALLY short, and seems to waste a lot of time on information that would have been useful when it was published but now can be easily found on wikipedia.Bob Kail's Best Concertina Method Yet-- as others have stated, this is a very bare bones collection of songs and exercises. It's cheap and would be a great SUPPLEMENT to Coover's book, but don't make it your primary.Mel Bay's Deluxe Concertina Book by Frank Converse-- this has all the problems that old school Mel Bay methods tend to have (too long on simple tunes, boring tunes, very little explanation for anything tricky written with the assumption you'll have a teacher, etc) with none of the benefits (being comprehensive). Like Kail's book, it would be worth playing through when you've completed Coover's book (there are some interesting chord-heavy pieces in the back), but this is a rough place to start. In contrast to all of the above, Coover's book has easy to read, modern diagrams, lots of explanation without being overly patronizing, and covers considerably more ground than the other books. It's the only one of the books I've mentioned here that covers the top row of the 30 button. It seems like every concertina book uses its own variation on tab, so at least Coover's book is easy to read! If you can already read music and have played another instrument, it's mostly just a matter of getting used to the layout (major triad on push, other notes on pull...) and Coover's tab is supportive and doesn't seem like something you'll become dependent on. Get this one first, and then skim the other ones when you're done with it.

It's been nearly a century since Marcel Duchamp exhibited a urinal and called it art. Since then, painting has been declared dead several times over, and contemporary art has now expanded to include just about any object, action, or event: dance routines, slideshows, functional hair salons, seemingly random accretions of waste. In the meantime, being an artist has gone from a join-the-circus fantasy to a plausible vocation for scores of young people in America.

But why--and how and by whom--does all this art get made? How is it evaluated? And for what, if anything, will today's artists be remembered? In The Contemporaries, Roger White, himself a young painter, serves as our spirited, skeptical guide through this diffuse creative world.

White takes us into the halls of the RISD graduate program, where students learn critical lessons that go far beyond how to apply paint to canvases. In New York, we meet the neophytes who assist established artists--and who walk the fine line between "assistance" and "making the art." In Milwaukee, White trails a group of friends trying to create a viable scene where rent is cheap, but where the spotlight rarely shines. And he gives us an intimate perspective on three wildly different careers: that of Dana Schutz, an emerging star who is revitalizing painting; Mary Walling Blackburn, whose challenging art defies market forces; and Stephen Kaltenbach, a '70s wunderkind who is back on the critical radar, perhaps in spite of his own willful obscurity.

From young artists trying to elbow their way in to those working hard at dropping out, White's essential book offers a once-in-a-generation glimpse of the inner workings of the American art world at a moment of unparalleled ambition, uncertainty, and creative exuberance.

The Contemporaries: Travels in the 21st-Century Art World, by Roger White

Review

"Comprehensive, clear-eyed books about the art world are few and far between . . . [The Contemporaries] is a vital addition to that short reading list . . . White is an ideal guide to the scene . . . The Contemporaries approaches the art world with equanimity, and a balanced measure of criticism and reporting. He is neither cynical nor craven. He gets it. The uninitiated can read it for a nuanced understanding of the art world's codes and rituals. Veterans can delight in the material White digs up and his expert rendering of it." ―Andrew Russeth, ARTnewS

"For those of us who are interested in art but far removed from its business, the art world can seem like an alien civilization, with incomprehensible mores, dictates that shift every week, and shibboleths apparently transmitted by telepathy. Into this murky situation rides Roger White, not to 'expose' anything, but to make sense of art's winding social and intellectual path, using clear language and concrete examples. This book may not make you embrace the art world, but at least you'll understand." ―Luc Sante

"Today's art ecosystem is utterly different from the one that intrigued so many of us in the 20th century: bigger, wealthier, and more corporate, while many an artist's garret has become someone's luxury pied-a-terre. Roger White's assessment of what this post-postmodern, post-bohemian scene means for artists is right on the mark and ultimately encouraging as he finds creators across the country working to avoid spectacle, stay rogue, and stay true." ―Cynthia Carr, author of Fire in the Belly: The Life and Times of David Wojnarowicz

"Funny, scary, unique, and exceptional, The Contemporaries told me so much that I had wanted to know about art today and much that I wouldn't have known to ask. It's an ingenious book, gracefully written, demonstrating Roger White's keen intelligence and real affection for our generation of artists, whether famous or unknown. Brilliant." ―Mark Greif, co-founder and co-editor of n+1 and author of The Age of the Crisis of Man: Though and Fiction in America, 1933-1973

"If you’ve ever gone to a contemporary art gallery and hovered in front of some painting thinking, 'Egads, I have no clue what is going on here,' this slim volume can give you one. Strolling around various corridors of the modern art world, Roger White’s The Contemporaries suggests just how far the business is from those romantic notions of a starving painter in his garret apartment, brush quivering." ―Colin Fleming, The Washington Post

"[A]t a time when most of us probably find it more fulfilling to consider work by past generations, in part because so much of contemporary art can seem like unapproachable BS, White’s book is an excellent foray into a world that is still worth our consideration." ―The Daily Beast

"The perambulatory, socio-anthropological genre of art writing receives a much-needed invigoration in Roger White’s The Contemporaries . . . Moving nimbly from the macro concerns of academy, studio, and marketplace to intimate engagements with the three artists, the titular 'contemporaries'--Dana Schutz, Mary Walling Blackburn, Stephen Kaltenback--White's essaysistic reporting is even-keeled and lucid while maintaing an energetic curiosity." ―Mostafa Heddaya, Blouin Artinfo

"As the 'travels' in the title suggests, The Contemporaries is not a comprehensive guide, but rather an in-depth look at some of the debates that animate the current art scene. These debates are big, complex topics like the rise of the MFA, the dominance of the art market and the ethics of art production when assistants are doing most of 'the work.' And to flesh them out, the book goes where the art is." - T Magazine Blog

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. and the like of such By Mulsane The core of this book concerns the work of Dana Schutz, and conceptual artist Stephen Kaltenbach. The first half deals with MFA programs and the need, utility, expectations, and the like of such. Then some stuff about the modern state of art making, the un-credited role of assistants, etc., etc. Interesting enough to keep you going, but not anything you don't really already know on some level. Or rather what anybody interested enough in the topic to actually pick up this book and read it, wouldn't already know... The real take away gems are largely found in the author's historic command of the conceptual art movement and Stephen Kaltenbach's role in such. Contains an exhausting level of references and information.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great Read By Benjamen R. King An insider's view of how art is being made today, including illuminating profiles of selected artists and their working environments. The book is filled with personality and personalities, and White inserts enough background/historical perspective at judicious points to bring an art novice (like me) along for the ride without weighting the book down. I particularly liked the final chapter, a multi-threaded narrative with a fascinating multi-decade story at its heart that was as good a read as the best you find in, say, the New Yorker.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Absolutely brilliant By Dick Clinton Intelligent, perceptive and extraordinarily well articulated - derived from 1st person interviews.. White's skill at writing almost exceeds his ability to paint. This a really enjoyable read.

A concise, engaging, practical overview of children’s books that keeps the focus on the books themselves, this brief introduction to children’s literature genres leaves time to actually read children’s books. Written on the assumption that the focus of a children’s literature course should be on the actual books that children read, the authors first wrote this book in 1996 as a “textbook for people who don’t like children’s literature textbooks.” Today it serves as an overview to shed light on the essentials of children’s literature and how to use it effectively with young readers, from PreK to 8th grade. The authors use an enjoyable, conversational style to achieve their goal of providing a practical overview of children’s books that offers a framework and background information, while keeping the spotlight on the books themselves. It is the authors’ intention to encourage teachers to develop their own dependable book lists, and to do so they have organized the book lists at the ends of the chapters under five different headings: Fifteen Timeless Gems, Fifteen Gems of the New Millennium, Others We Like, Easier to Read, and Picture Books. The new Ninth Edition of Children’s Literature, Briefly includes a poem and learning objectives at the start of each chapter; brief chapter summaries at the ends of chapters; a reorganization of the information from the first and last chapters into a new first chapter, which more clearly explains the importance of reading and how best to help children become lifelong lovers of reading; a new list of favorite titles, the Fifteen Gems of the New Millennium; the addition of pictures books as a separate category, rather than integrated within the chapter books; updated examples and new research findings; and a greater emphasis on modern publishing trends.

EXCERPT:HAS there ever been a time when no stories were told? Has there ever been a people who did not care to listen? I think not.

When we were little, before we could read for ourselves, did we not gather eagerly round father or mother, friend or nurse, at the promise of a story? When we grew older, what happy hours did we not spend with our books. How the printed words made us forget the world in which we live, and carried us away to a wonderland,“Where waters gushed and fruit trees grewAnd flowers put forth a fairer hue,And everything was strange and new;The sparrows were brighter than peacocks here,And their dogs outran our fallow deer,And honey bees had lost their stings,And horses were born with eagles’ wings."**Robert Browning.

And as it is with us, so it is with a nation, with a people.

In the dim, far-off times when our forefathers were wild, naked savages, they had no books. Like ourselves, when we were tiny, they could neither read nor write. But do you think that they had no stories? Oh, yes! We may be sure that when the day’s work was done, when the fight or the chase was over, they gathered round the wood fire and listened to the tales of the story-teller.

These stories were all of war. They told of terrible combats with men or with fierce strange beasts, they told of passion, of revenge. In them there was no beauty, no tenderness, no love. For the life of man in those far-off days was wild and rough; it was one long struggle against foes, a struggle which left little room for what was beautiful or tender.

But as time went on, as life became more easy, in one way or another the savage learned to become less savage. Then as he changed, the tales he listened to changed too. They were no longer all of war, of revenge; they told of love also. And later, when the story of Christ had come to soften men’s hearts and brighten men’s lives, the stories told of faith and purity and gentleness.

By LaJuana English Literature for Boys and Girls is a five-star book; it is one of the best books I have found for introducing English Literature to children from the age of 9 or 10 through middle school. However, this large print edition is poorly edited. What a shame. The book deserves better.H. E. Marshall's vocabulary and sentence structure are complex, and reading this book will stretch the younger student's reading comprehension, but he or she will also be enticed into a love of English literature. This book provides the background a student should have before beginning to study the Great Books written in English. From ancient Irish legends to Chaucer to Alexander Pope to Alfred Lord Tennyson, all the greatest works of English literature are introduced here. In most chapters the text includes both the story of a particular work of literature and excerpts from the actual work itself, including some in archaic English. This gives rise to great discussions on the transformation of the English language over time.I own a copy of the text as originally published, and I purchased this large print edition to help my 9yo students to read the text without eye strain. However, this large print edition published by BiblioBazaar is in dire need of an editor. Many whole lines from the original are skipped in this edition, leaving the students scratching their heads in wonder at the already challenging-to-comprehend readings. Sometimes a footnote will be inserted in the text with the next paragraph printed as part of the footnote extending to the bottom of the next page, skipping the entire paragraph in the primary text. This seems to be a quick-published edition that was never edited properly. The shoddy editing is a shame since this book deserves to be in the hands of every young English-speaking student.I cannot recommend this book highly enough, but I strongly suggest purchasing a different edition. There is no excuse for the gross errors in this large-print edition.

I read my grandfather's 11 plus exam and realised I couldn't have answered many of its questions when I was 15. Nowadays, this book would be read by adults to help them educate their children but really an intelligent 10 or 12 year old should be able to cope with this. As they probably aren't, I recommend this for any parent wishing to give their child a solid foundation in English Lit. She was brilliant. Homeschooling!!!

Review "Ly's given a whole generation new ways to re-imagine the backyard garden, and now she's given us a fresh and uniquely delicious take on modern farm food. A fearless cook who wastes nothing, her nourishing dishes fit the bill for weeknight suppers or when you need something tasty and satisfying to feed a hungry crowd." - Edible Media"One of my favorite sayings is, 'Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without.' What appeals to me about this phrase is the idea that everything is useful. And that's why I like The CSA Cookbook so much. Many of Linda's dishes utilize the oft discarded parts of vegetables such as tomato leaves, radish greens and carrot tops. More than just being efficient, these recipes encourage us to explore the flavors and uses of every edible part of a plant. This book will completely change the way you look at vegetables." - P. Allen Smith, author of P. Allen Smith's Seasonal Recipes from the Garden "The CSA Cookbook shows you how to use everything your vegetables offer, whether they come from your CSA or your garden. After all, why throw away what's edible when it can offer so much in the kitchen?" - Deborah Madison, author of Vegetable Literacy: Cooking and Gardening with Twelve Families from the Edible Plant Kingdom "I love this cookbook. From herb flowers to carrot tops to watermelon rind, Linda has a beautiful sensibility for using the whole vegetable. In her hands, familiar ingredients from the garden and the greenmarket take on rich and unexpected flavors." - Louisa Shafia, author of Lucid Food: Cooking for an Eco-Conscious Life "The CSA Cookbook is the book I've long been searching for but haven't been able to find, chock full of clever, economical, and tasty ways to use up otherwise composted or discarded produce. Without a doubt, Linda has penned the ideal literary accompaniment to anyone with a CSA subscription or who simply has been seeking creative ways of using up all those bits and bobs you haven't known what to do with." - Ashley English, author of Handmade Gatherings: Recipes and Crafts for Seasonal Celebrations and Potluck Parties"The CSA Cookbook takes an inventive approach to farm-focused, seasonal cooking with bright and vibrant recipes that leave you excited by what might arrive in your CSA box next." - Jennifer McGruther, author of The Nourished Kitchen

"This is a must-have book for home cooks who prepare and serve fresh, healthy food raised in healthy soil. Linda's enticing recipes use every part of a beet or broccoli or leek to provide the rich garden experience we all want." - Joanne Neft, author of The Art of Real Food

"You will have so many why-didn't-I-think-of-that moments as you cook your way through this inspired book. Linda translates the nose-to-tail ethos into garden speak so well that the only thing to go hungry will be your compost pile." - Ian Knauer, author of The Farm: Rustic Recipes for a Year of Incredible Food

"Linda's expertise as a passionate gardener shows through in every one of her unique, seasonal dishes. More than a collection of well-photographed whole foods recipes, The CSA Cookbook is a guide to sustainable cooking. After learning about the culinary possibilities of tomato leaves, chard stalks, and kale buds, one is guaranteed to be inspired by Linda's wise top-to-tail approach to vegetables. - Anya Kassoff, author of The Vibrant Table: Recipes from My Always Vegetarian, Mostly Vegan, and Sometimes Raw Kitchen

“We are excited to use The CSA Cookbook in our own kitchen. Filled with tips on preparing the entire vegetable from roots to tops and substituting one vegetable for another to make use of whatever is available, the book will surely inspire people to use their CSA produce to the fullest extent. The abundance of colorful photos and detailed instructions make the recipes easily achievable for the growing number of CSA members or anyone else with access to fresh produce. It is a wonderful resource for gardeners, chefs, and home cooks alike.”  - Jere Gettle, owner of Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds and author of The Heirloom Life Gardener

By LOL I love vegetables, but I never seem to have any great ideas for preparing them or what at all to do with some of the more uncommon one. This book fills a much needed gap. There is a great section on different vegetables, how to store, cut etc. It also gives a great chart for making stock and another for pesto! Then the recipes are divided by type, which makes it easy to find when you are working with a specific vegetable: tomatoes and peppers, leafy greens, peas and beans, bulbs and stems, roots and tubers, melons and gourds, and flowers and herbs. I also found the recipes to be very interesting and not overly complicated. You will find recipes for all courses such as skillet eggs poached in serrano tomato, chard steak hummus, kickin broccoli mac and cheese, fennel apple and celery slaw, roasted beet and carrot salad with creamy goat cheese, watermelon rind kimchi, zucchini noodles with roasted tomatoes, pesto and pinenuts, bibimbap, drunken pumpkin chili and all in herb dressing. Everything sounds delicious and you can find something to do with almost anything you bring home or receive in your CSA box. While it has a good index, its not great. That is the only flaw that I have found with the book.

Recipes are easy to follow, and the author provides thorough descriptions for everything. There's even a section in the beginning of the book on the best way to store everything! The author uses ALL parts of the plants, which I appreciate (e.g., there are recipes using potato greens, watermelon rind, etc). Also, there are a lot of vegetarian recipes. In fact, even the recipes with meat seem to work with the produce instead of overpowering it. Lastly, I LOVE that she uses the full fat versions when it comes to products (e.g., milk, cheeses). If you are looking for an easy-to-follow recipe book that focuses on whole-food ingredients without sacrificing flavor or creativity then this book is for you.

Which is great for this book because there are tons of ideas for subbing things out. Like tonite- didn't have collard greens, but did have broccoli leaves, so I made Down Home broccoli leaves, that really did go pretty well with Kickin' broccoli mac and cheese, with copious amounts of added gochugaru. Tomorrow- Potlikker noodles. Garden Betty has tons of tips and extra bonus- recipes that build on each other. Like the greens from today that will become the noodles of tomorrow. But seriously, if you are reading the review, you're probably thinking about buying the book so just click the handy dandy buy it now button and check out the blog while you wait for it to hit your doorstep. Even more recipes and tips that work.

I love this collection of short stories because it allows to conceptualize our postmodern society's norm. Categories and identifiers do not limit this body of work. Instead readers find satisfaction, comfort, and the ability to hold a mirror up to the lives of themselves as well as their peers. Because the stories jump from topic to topic and theme to theme, it kept me on my toes. Sometimes I wanted to read on, but as I contented without pausing, I began to notice a deliberate distribution of stories from the author to convey certain emotions and thoughts in an effective way. There are many layers to Sniggerless Boundulations, and it takes a critical eye to take them in properly. From bizarre medical conditions to homoeroticism, then to a secret garden, and nonchalant students, this book really has the kind of content you're not going to find in one book. I've seen no collection like this anywhere else!

Each one different, so you will be deep into the stories and they are done wonderfully.A tunnel with no end.Deep water and fear.Learn about shark fins and how its gotten for soup.A call about an illegal man had to be done.Granted, a guy who has a lot and donates. And thats just some hints into those stories, and you can even learn some things from these stories. People, life, the world. There are many things to read and learn from this book and I know you will all love it. A mix of things you haven't seen together and yet it all just works and will have your attention until the end of this short book.5 stars!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A Smart and Delicious Take on the Moral Ambiguity of a World Gone Wrong. By Michael I found "Sniggerless Boundulations" by Morgan Bell to be a very interesting selection of short stories; an eclectic mix of humor, political and social commentary, horror, mystery, and a wonderful take on what we call, the "Modern World". The stories are set in post-modernist Australia, with all its beauty and warts, depicting a society, which, while materially rich and highly developed, often seems to be on the verge of a moral and psychological breakdown.I liked and enjoyed all the stories, some more than the others, reading all of them in a single reading session. The writer has used a very interesting writing style, with no consistency in the word count for the stories - some are extremely brief, while others take somewhat longer to finish. If there's a consistent trend in the stories - it's the moral ambiguity of the world we live in, and the often brilliant and sometimes unexpected twist in the end that each of the stories end with. In this review, I present my take on some of the stories that I found most interesting. We start off with "The Tunnel", a particularly short tale, no more than a few paragraphs, about a tunnel that never ends - perhaps alluding to the fact that life is a tunnel with no light at the end of it."Shark Fin Soup" has a very interesting exchange between a pushy and sanctimonious animal rights activist (aren't they all?) and a gruff old man, who's more than he appears.Particularly funny was "The Dermoid Cyst" - 2 rich, self-centered "modern" women compete over who has bigger problems. The joke at the end had me in splits, which was worth the price of the whole book."Mrs. Jackson" is a horror story, a violent take on a school shootout, while "It had to be done" is a brilliant and evocative exposition of the immigration problem, and the vulnerability of immigrants in the Western society. I thought this was one of the very best short stories in the book. The honor of being the best story in the book goes to "Granted", which has 2 stories completely independent of each other, but each offering an excellent commentary on our world and our times, focusing on the widening gap between the haves and have-nots, juxtaposing material prosperity and abundance on one side, with poverty and insecurity on the other. In fact, "Granted" makes a convincing case for the Occupy Wall Street movement."Mini Play" is both a funny and sad story of a desperate older gay man's search for a partner. The book ends with 2 short stories that wouldn't look out of place in a Stephen King collection. "Telfer Speck" is deliciously evil, while "Garsdale" is mysterious and beautifully written - and a great way to end the book.Overall, a very fine effort by the writer, and I definitely look forward to more from her.
