In Japan, it is said that there are 8 million kami. These spirits encompass every kind of supernatural creature; from malign to monstrous, demonic to divine, and everything in between. Most of them seem strange and scary—even evil—from a human perspective. They are known by myriad names: bakemono, chimimoryo, mamono, mononoke, obake, oni, and yokai. Yokai live in a world that parallels our own. Their lives resemble ours in many ways. They have societies and rivalries. They eat, sing, dance, play, fight, compete, and even wage war. Normally, we keep to our world and they keep to theirs. However, there are times and places where the boundaries between the worlds thin, and crossing over is possible. The twilight hour—the border between daylight and darkness—is when the boundary between worlds is at its thinnest. Twilight is the easiest time for yokai to cross into this world, or for humans to accidentally cross into theirs. Our world is still awake and active, but the world of the supernatural is beginning to stir. Superstition tells people to return to their villages and stay inside when the sun sets in order to avoid running into demons. This is why in Japanese the twilight hour is called omagatoki: "the hour of meeting evil spirits." This encyclopedia contains over 125 illustrated entries detailing the monsters of Japanese folklore and the myths and magic surrounding them. This book was first funded on Kickstarter in 2013.

Perfect manual for discovering Japanese demon culture By EFEO Kyoto This book is the second volume of a series on Japanese y'kai folkolore, it illustrates Japanese demon (y'kai) folklore in a very accessible way. Edited like an old grimoire, on 2 pages each creature is presented in a concise yet very efficient way: in an image and text dialog. I would recommend it to any one as a perfect introduction to the fantastic world of Japanese demons.I have also read it on paperback edition, the format is also very well though, the size, the weight, the quality of paper, makes it very handy and practical to read. The size is very well adapted for a kindle format

By Jerra I picked up this book because it was cheap on Amazon, but now I find myself wishing I had paid more for it! It's a beautiful piece of work, well-researched, and to my surprise and utter delight, every single entry is gorgeously illustrated! Highly recommend, for anyone interested in folklore or ghost stories or yokai specifically.

By Kenneth Wood Another incredible exploration into Yokai Mythology from Meyer.Much like his first book, "Night Parade of 100 Demons", Meyer goes into great informative depth on the various creatures of Japanese, and to a greater extent, Asian folklore.+The artwork is incredible, a lot of it is modern restorations from ukiyo-e artist Toriyama Seiken's series of 18th centuries bestiaries, brought to the modern day through modern art techniques combined with imagery and ukiyo-e stylization that really makes the artwork come alive. Meyer could probably take all of his Yokai drawings, put them all together in a hardback book and sell them as an artbook, it really is that good.+But thats not all, with each image comes a very detailed and lengthy exploration into the origins, legends, and nature of each Yokai or spirit featured. This is a lifesaver for would-be English Yokai-enthusiasts as most Yokai lore and stories have little to no information in English speaking regions of the world or even on the Web outside of famous Yokai like the Kappa or Oni, but Meyer goes a step further and showcases strange, little known monsters on top of the more famous ones. An example is the Ippon Datara, of which I was only able to get a mere sentence or two surrounding a boar god that turned into one without elaboration into what an Ippon Datara is, Meyer provides a face and very in depth description of a very strange, very unique folkloric critter which I am appalled at the utter lack of information that exists in regards to it in other English speaking portions of the web.+But he doesn't stop at just Yokai, in this book also contains a lengthy portion describing the Japanese Shinto-Buddhist Afterlife (both Meido and Jigoku) as well as Onmyodo practices and spells and even informative glances into Japanese Religion(s) and how the Sun setting and rising plays a role in that and how Yokai are involved therein. The Onmyodo information alone is something I could not find much else on in the english portion of the internet, making a huge bonus for a potential reader.+covers the "three great evil Yokai" (Tamamo-no-Mae, Shuten Doji and Sutoku) as well as the "Three Great evil Onryo" and several other individuals of both historical fact and myth and the legends that involve them, making for a good history lesson of Japan on top of of the mythological aspect of it.+Other myths of Asia are also covered from China, to Okinawa, to even India. Religions too from the Goryo Shinko, Koshin, and even Okinawan Shamanism.+/-For its price (almost as much as a college textbook) its a tough sell, especially as a paper-back book. However, coming from an artists' perspective, I understand given the amount of drawings and artwork Meyer has done himself in the back. Coming from experience, art isn't quick, easy or cheap. Its a time consuming affair and there are over a hundred images in the book the Meyer drew and painted (digitally) himself. So while the text content is lacking in terms of its price-tag, the art, in my opinion more than makes up for it.-If you are familiar with his website, Yokai.com or his blog, you will find that a lot of the entries and art in the book already exist online as well as his Yokai-a-day marathon where he uploads one Yokai entry + art per day, each day in the month of October. Furthermore, his exploration into Meido and Jigoku had already been extensively done on his own blog, which he admits there that his book won't cover much more than what he did there. Thus being a potential downside to a potential buyer, however, one misses out on his informative notes and additions he occasionally adds to entries such as explaining what "karts" has to do with a Kasha, which otherwise does not exist on his website. Something to keep in mind before you decide to spend fifty dollars on a paperback book. All in all, if you are really committed to learning about Yokai and Japanese Folklore/History be you a hobbyist or would be student of Japanese myth, this book is a must-buy and must-own for your digital or even physical collection. The art, the in-depth research and the amount of content is more than enough to justify purchasing it. However if you are not that interested in Japanese folklore, than I honestly, objectively can't justify some regular chap (especially if they don't care for art) spending 55 dollars on a book like this, they are best off going to his Blog or Yokai.com and sating their curiosities that way. However, for me personally, and my own love of Japanese folklore and frustration in trying to find more in depth information, this book has been a lifesaver for me. And I'm sure it will be so to other would-be English researchers of Yokai who can't yet speak or read Japanese. Meyer has truly done a service to the cause of increased knowledge and information about Yokai folklore.

"Believers are light.  Unbelievers are darkness.  Real, complex, unique people, often people that the believer cares about deeply, have to be put into one of these two categories.  Clearly, due to the fact that there are genuinely kind souls of other faiths or non-faith, the believer is eventually going to run into individuals who strain these categories of thought.  Often these relationships can be the first 'crack' in the Evangelical framework of faith."In The Evangelical Experience, Anthony Coleman gives the reader an inside look at the Evangelical movement in America.  Having been a part of the faith during his formative and early adult years, Coleman shares his personal journey into, and out of, Evangelicalism, as well as observations on how accepting the Church's doctrine affects the believer in diverse ways.  Coleman concludes by wondering aloud what life and faith look like after leaving conservative Christianity, and shares his thoughts on a tentative way forward.Evangelicals will find much they relate to, non-Evangelicals will gain a better understanding of the movement, and former Evangelicals will find a companion on their journey. Anthony Coleman holds a B.A. in Biblical and Theological Studies and an M.A. in Theological Studies from separate Evangelical institutions. He can be contacted at theevangelicalexperience@gmail.com.

The Evangelical Experience: Understanding One of America's Largest Religious Movements from the Inside, by Anthony Coleman

Review "A debut book offers a concise introduction to Evangelicalism from an informed insider...The book is bifurcated into two parts: a scholarly account of the theology and history of Evangelicalism and a memoir recounting the author's grappling with his own doubts about his faith.  The first part is as lucid a précis as is available; Coleman patiently describes a widely misunderstood religious sect in accessible prose.  What emerges is not only an unambiguous account of what it means to be Evangelical, but also a picture of a church much less monolithic than is commonly thought.  Despite some basic theological commitments, Evangelicals are engaged in their own share of intramural disputes about scriptural exegesis, salvation, homosexuality and gay marriage, and a number of other significant topics.  In the autobiographical portion of the book, Coleman candidly discusses the crisis of faith he experienced as he discovered differences between his view of the Bible and most Evangelicals', and this interpretive dissonance ultimately birthed a philosophical skepticism that nearly destroyed his faith.  He found his way back to God, though no longer as an Evangelical, and counsels that its members rethink their relations to non-Christians...The book concludes with an actual entry from the author's journal that affectingly conveys the anguish he suffered from his trial of doubt.  Coleman writes under a nom de guerre, apparently so as not to challenge the faith of Evangelicals he knows, though it's not entirely clear why writing anonymously will diminish the volume's power to potentially nurture doubts.  Nevertheless, this is a moving and educational book that will resonate with all those in search of an authentically religious life.  A superb account of an increasingly important religious movement." - Kirkus Reviews

By growing up, I mean I went to church just about every day of the week. When I wasn’t in church, I was studying for something regarding church. So, it’s safe to say, this book really hit home for me.It was interesting reading another person’s experience of this, like looking at your reflection in a puddle (its mostly the same with some differences). However, unlike me, the author didn’t present his story in anger. Rather, it’s very respectable and level headed, which was refreshing. Of course, I find the leaving of the faith to be the most relatable here, as there is a certain amount of pain and anger, I feel, in most people’s experience. The entire experience is well written, poses some interesting questions and offers great insight into a life that many don’t experience and that those who do experience can’t clearly see. I felt it to be quite emotional, yet rational.

By Joshua Barratt This is a really fascinating book, that's really 3 books in one.First, it provides a really excellent "inside out" view of what it is like to be in the evangelical belief system, as well as an overview of the different flavors of evangelicalism. Second, it's a heartbreaking personal journal of what it's like to find that one no longer believes in the tenets of the system, and forced to walk away from it. And finally, it's a brief but withering attack on the truth claims made by Christianity in general.I was raised Christian, but not evangelical, so I found the "view from the inside" to be especially interesting -- some parts of it I identified with completely, others were wildly different -- it was fascinating to see how different a life could end up looking which is ostensibly entirely based on the same source texts. As I also left the church for similar reasons, the personal account of the process of realizing things were possibly not true? then probably not true? then certainly enough not true that it was time to go? brought back some painful memories, but it was also nice to be able to share that experience. The reasons the author shared for leaving were powerful ones, many of which I shared. I'm not sure how much they would make sense to people who had not already been deeply entrenched in those thoughts and terminology, they are quite a cliff notes/shorthand version of the thinking.Where the author and I parted ways was in his retention of a deep love for the idea of religion, and mystic forms of it. When I took the blinders off, I saw religious ideas as having been responsible for much of the pain, and found secular ways to fill in 'the good stuff', and was happy to make my best attempt at being rational/naturalist from there on out. But even though I can't see what he still finds appealing, I enjoyed learning about where he had ended up.(Full disclosure, the author contacted me and gave me a free copy of this book because of on a review I'd done of another book in the same broad subject area.)

By Robin Surface I work with a lot of evangelical clients and reading this book helped me understand where they’re coming from, though I still don’t really get why there are so many rules and regulations for their specific belief system. It was refreshing to see that other people have issues with believing the Bible is infallible and completely from God, when obviously (to me at least) it has been written, translated repeatedly by man and influenced by various political entities throughout the years, so the things it contains are hardly the word of God (in my opinion). To even insinuate this to people who are devoted evangelicals is to appear to be influenced by the devil and desperately in need of being “saved” from yourself. (I’ve learned to keep my mouth shut about what I think when talking to Evangelicals!)It was also interesting to learn how Evangelicals deal with discrepancies and contradictions within the bible – i.e. by forcing them to fit the mold anyway, explaining them away or just plain ignoring them. I had no idea how truly restricted their beliefs were, which is probably why I’ve never really identified with that particular branch of Christianity.I was surprised to see that the author retained his core beliefs even after becoming disillusioned with the Evangelical viewpoint. I would think that he could have lost his faith had he been less devout. It was clear the author is a biblical scholar and "knows his stuff" and it was interesting that he included various scripture to illustrate his points, without coming across as preachy or vindictive towards his former church. The book was well written and a relatively quick read for such a deep subject. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to understand the Evangelical belief system.

I realized quickly how much sense his advice made and how it could make a difference if it were true. Immediately I made many recommended changes to my resume and rapidly realized increases in calls for interviews. I just got done reading this book on RP after seeing a tweet about it and am re-invigorated with the depth and detail he captures. Of particular interest to me is the deconstruction of the inefficient writing and resume numbers sections, which both score huge on the value scale for me. (More "oh crap" moments)But I am now really agitated! I have been sending people to Dirk for advice for years and suddenly realized that my own resume has languished with inattention over time. I may not be seeking anything at the moment, but we never know when something seeks us out and putting our best foot forward is extremely important. This book is packed with tips, quickly articulated to show cause and effect value. I am very much impressed with Dirk all over again. Highly recommended!

Her Knight in the Outback (Harlequin Romance Large Print), by Nikki Logan

About the Author Nikki Logan lives amongst a string of wetlands in Australia with her partner and a menagerie of animals. Her stories are full of romance in descriptive, natural environments. She believes the richness and danger of wild places perfectly mirror the passion and risk of falling in love. Nikki authored her first romance on a sabbatical from work. Determined to be published by forty, her first book hit shelves in February 2010, her fortieth year, and she hasn't looked back since.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. It was moments like this that Evelyn Read hated. Life-defining moments. Moments when her fears and prejudices reared up before her eyes and confronted her—just like a King Brown snake, surprised while basking on the hot Australian highway. She squinted at the distant biker limping carefully towards her out of the shimmering heat mirage and curled her fingers more tightly around the steering wheel.A moment like this one might have taken her brother. Maybe Trav stopped for the wrong stranger; maybe that was where he went when he disappeared all those months ago. Her instincts screamed that she should press down on her accelerator until the man—the danger—was an hour behind her. But a moment like this might have saved her brother, too. If a stranger had only been kind enough or brave enough to stop for him. Then maybe Travis would be back with them right now. Safe. Loved.Instead of alone, scared…or worse. The fear of never knowing what happened to him tightened her gut the way it always did when she thought too long about this crazy thing she was doing. The biker limped closer.Should she listen to her basest instincts and flee, or respond to twenty-four years of social conditioning and help a fellow human being in trouble? There was probably some kind of outback code to be observed, too, but she'd heard too many stories from too many grieving people to be particularly bothered by niceties.Eve's eyes flicked to the distant motorbike listing on the side of the long, empty road. And then, closer, to the scruffy man now nearing the restored 1956 Bedford bus that was getting her around Australia. She glanced at her door's lock to make sure it was secure. The man limped to a halt next to the bus's bifold doors and looked at her expectantly over his full beard. A dagger tattoo poked out from under his dark T-shirt and impenetrable sunglasses hid his eyes—and his intent—from her.No. This was her home. She'd never open her front door to a total stranger. Especially not hours from the nearest other people. She signalled him around to the driver's window instead. He didn't look too impressed, but he limped his way around to her side and she slid the antique window open and forced her voice to be light.Sociopaths make a decision on whether you're predator or prey in the first few seconds, she remembered from one of the endless missing-person fact sheets she'd read. She was not about to have 'prey' stamped on her forehead.'Morning,' she breezed, as if this wasn't potentially a very big deal indeed. 'Looks like you're having a bad day.''Emu,' he grunted and she got a glimpse of straight teeth and healthy gums.Stupidly, that reassured her. As if evil wouldn't floss. She twisted around for evidence of a big damaged bird flailing in the scrub after hitting his motorbike. To validate his claim. 'Was it okay?''Yeah, I'm fine, thanks.'That brought her eyes back to his glasses. 'I can see that. But emus don't always come off the best after a road impact.'As if she'd know.'Going that fast, it practically went over the top of me as it ran with its flock. It's probably twenty miles from here now, trying to work out how and when it got black paint on its claws.'He held up his scratched helmet, which had clearly taken an impact. More evidence. She just nodded, not wanting to give an inch more than necessary. He'd probably already summed her up as a bleeding heart over the emu.One for the prey column.'Where are you headed?' he asked. Her radar flashed again at his interest. 'West.'Duh, since the Bedford was pointing straight at the sun heading for the horizon and there was nothing else out this way but west.'Can I catch a lift to the closest town?'Was that tetchiness in his voice because she kept foiling him or because hers was the first vehicle to come along in hours and she was stonewalling him on a ride? She glanced at his crippled bike.'That'll have to stay until I can get back here with a truck,' he said, following her glance. There was something in the sag of his shoulders and the way he spared his injured leg that reassured her even as the beard and tattoo and leather did not. He'd clearly come off his bike hard. Maybe he was more injured than she could see?But the stark reality was that her converted bus only had the one seat up front—hers. 'That's my home back there,' she started.'So.?''So, I don't know you.'Yep. That was absolutely the insult his hardened lips said it was. But she was not letting a stranger back there. Into her world.'It's only an hour to the border.' He sighed. 'I'll stand on your steps until Eucla.'Right next to her. Where he could do anything and she couldn't do a thing to avoid it.'An hour by motorbike, maybe. We take things a little more easy in this old girl. It'll take at least twice that.''Fine. I'll stand for two hours, then.'Or she could just leave him here and send help back. But the image of Trav, lost and in need of help while someone drove off and left him injured and alone, flitted through her mind.If someone had just been brave…'I don't know you,' she wavered.'Look, I get it. A woman travelling alone, big scary biker. You're smart to be cautious but the reality is help might not be able to get to me today so if you leave me here I could be here all night. Freezing my ass off.'She fumbled for her phone. His shaggy head shook slightly. 'If we had signal don't you think I'd have used it?'Sure enough, her phone had diminished to SOS only. And as bad as that motorbike looked, it wasn't exactly an emergency.'Just until we get signal, then?' he pressed, clearly annoyed at having to beg. 'Come on, please?'How far could that be? They were mostly through the desert now, coming out on the western side of Australia. Where towns and people and telecommunications surely had to exist.'Have you got some ID?'He blinked at her and then reached back into his jeans for his wallet.'No. Not a licence. That could be fake. Got any photos of you?'He moved slowly, burdened by his incredulity, but pulled his phone out and flicked through a few screens. Then he pressed it up against Eve's window glass.A serious face looked back at her. Well groomed and in a business shirt. Pretty respectable, really. Almost cute.Pffff. 'That's not you.''Yeah, it is.'She peered at him again. 'No, it's not.'It might have been a stock photo off the Internet for all she knew. The sort of search result she used to get when she googled 'corporate guy' for some design job.'Oh, for pity's sake.'He flicked through a few more and found another one, this time more bearded. But nothing like the hairy beast in front of her. Her hesitation obviously spoke volumes so he pushed his sunglasses up onto his head, simultaneously revealing grey eyes and slightly taming his rusty blond hair.Huh. Okay, maybe it was him.'Licence?'A breathed bad word clearly tangled in the long hairs of his moustache but he complied—eventually—and slapped that against the window, too.Marshall Sullivan. She held up her phone and took a photo of him through the glass, with his licence in the shot. 'What's that for?''Insurance.''I just need a lift. That's it. I have no interest in you beyond that.' 'Easy for you to say.'Her thumbs got busy texting it to both her closest friend and her father in Melbourne. Just to cover bases. Hard to know if the photo would make them more or less confident in this dusty odyssey she was on, but she had to send it to someone. The grey eyes she could now see rolled. 'We have no signal.''The moment we do it will go.'She hit Send and let the phone slip back down into its little spot on her dash console.'You have some pretty serious trust issues, lady, you know that?''And this is potentially the oldest con in the book. Broken-down vehicle on remote outback road.' She glanced at his helmet and the marks that could be emu claws. 'I'll admit your story has some pretty convincing details—''Because it's the truth.''—but I'm travelling alone and I'm not going to take any chances. And I'm not letting you in here with me, sorry.' The cab was just too small and risky. 'You'll have to ride in the back.''What about all the biker germs I'm going to get all over your stuff?' he grumbled.'You want a lift or not?'Those steady eyes glared out at her. 'Yeah. I do.'And then, as though he couldn't help himself, he grudgingly rattled off a thankyou.Okay, so it had to be safer to let him loose in the back than have him squished here in the front with her. Her mind whizzed through all the things he might get up to back there but none of them struck her as bad as what he could do up front if he wasn't really who he said he was.Or even if he was.Biker boy and his helmet limped back towards the belongings piled on the side of the road next to his disabled bike. Leather jacket, pair of satchels, a box of mystery equipment. She ground the gears starting the Bedford back up, but rolled up behind him and, as soon as his arms were otherwise occupied with his own stuff, she unlocked the bus and mouthed through the glass of her window. 'Back doors.'Sullivan limped to the back of the Bedford, lurched it as he climbed in and then slammed himself in there with all her worldly possessions. Two hours…'Come on, old chook,' she murmured to the decades-old bus. 'Let's push it a bit, eh?'Marshall groped around for a light switch but only found a thick fabric curtain. He pulled it back with a swish and light flooded into the darkened interior of the bus. Something extraordinary unfolded in front of him. He'd seen converted buses before but they were usually pretty daggy. Kind of worn and soulless and vinyl. But this… This was rich, warm and natural; nothing at all like the hostile lady up front. It was like a little cottage in some forest. All timber and plush rugs in dark colours. Small, but fully appointed with kitchenette and living space, flat-screen TV, fridge and a sofa. Even potted palms. Compact and long but all there, like one of those twenty-square-metre, fold-down and pull-out apartments they sold in flat packs. At the far end—the driving end—a closed door that must lead to the only absent feature of the vehicle, the bed.And suddenly he got a sense of Little Miss Hos-tile's reluctance to let him back here. It was like inviting a total stranger right into your bedroom. Smack bang in the middle of absolutely nowhere. The bus lurched as she tortured it back up to speed and Marshall stumbled down onto the sofa built into the left side of the vehicle. Not as comfortable as his big eight-seater in the home theatre of his city apartment, but infinitely better than the hard gravel he'd been polishing with his butt for the couple of hours since the bird strike.Stupid freaking emu. It could have killed them both.It wasn't as if a KTM 1190 was a stealth unit but maybe, at the speed the emu had been going, the air rushing past its ears was just as noisy as an approaching motorbike. And then their fates had collided. Literally. He sagged down against the sofa back and resisted the inclination to examine his left foot. Sometimes boots were the only things that kept fractured bones together after bike accidents so he wasn't keen to take it off unless he was bleeding to death. In fact, particularly if he was bleeding to death because something told him the hostess-with-the-leastest would not be pleased if he bled out all over her timber floor. But he could at least elevate it. That was generally good for what ailed you. He dragged one of his satchels up onto the sofa, turned and stacked a couple of the bouncy, full pillows down the opposite end and then swung his abused limb up onto it, lying out the full length of the sofa.'Oh, yeah…' Half words, half groan. All good.He loved his bike. He loved the speed. He loved that direct relationship with the country you had when there was no car between you and it. And he loved the freedom from everything he'd found touring that country. But he really didn't love how fragile he'd turned out to be when something went wrong at high speed. As stacks went, it had been pretty controlled. Especially considering the fishtail he'd gone into as the mob of emu shot past and around him. But even a controlled slide hurt—him and the bike—and once the adrenaline wore off and the birds disappeared over the dusty horizon, all he'd been left with was the desert silence and the pain. And no phone signal.Normally that wouldn't bother him. There really couldn't be enough alone time in this massive country, as far as he was concerned. If you travelled at the right time of year—and that would be the wrong time of year for tourists—you could pretty much have most outback roads to yourself. He was free to do whatever he wanted, wear whatever he wanted, be as hairy as he wanted, shower whenever he wanted. Or not. He'd given up caring what people thought of him right about the time he'd stopped caring about people.Ancient history. And life was just simpler that way.The stoic old Bedford finally shifted into top gear and the rattle of its reconditioned engine evened out to a steady hum, vibrating under his skin as steadily as his bike did. He took the rare opportunity to do what he could never do when at the controls: he closed his eyes and let the hum take him.Two hours, she'd said. He could be up on his feet with her little home fully restored before she even made it from the front of the bus back to the rear doors. As if no one had ever been there. Two hours to rest. Recover. And enjoy the roads he loved from a more horizontal perspective.'Who's been sleeping in my bed?' Eve muttered as she stood looking at the bear of a man fast asleep on her little sofa. What was this—some kind of reverse Goldilocks thing? She cleared her throat. Nothing. He didn't even shift in his sleep. 'Mr Sullivan?'Nada. For the first time, it occurred to her that maybe this wasn't sleep; maybe this was coma. Maybe he'd been injured more than either of them had realised. She hauled herself up into the back of the bus and crossed straight to his side, all thoughts of dangerous tattooed men cast aside. Her fingertips brushed below the hairy tangle of his jaw.Steady and strong. And warm.Phew.'Mr Sullivan,' she said, louder. Those dark blond brows twitched just slightly and something moved briefly behind his eyelids, so she pressed her advantage. 'We're here.'Her gaze went to his elevated foot and then back up to where his hands lay, folded, across the T-shirt over his midsection. Rather nice hands. Soft and manicured despite the patches of bike grease from his on-road repairs. The sort of hands you'd see in a magazine.Which was ridiculous. How many members of motorcycle clubs sidelined in a bit of casual hand modelling?

Unique, heart touching storyline and a sweet, complicated romance By Hope This Helps Rating: 4.5 stars. _PG rated sexual content (none graphic).Note: Stands alone read.GREAT READ! Skillfully written, compelling missing-persons storyline, complex characters, intense, honest dialogue, and a soul-searing look at the emotional toll of not knowing what happened to a loved one. HOWEVER, this book is sometime difficult to read. It unflinchingly depicts the heroine's struggle to cope with uncertainty, giving up her future to search for her missing brother. It also depicts the effect it has on the hero who must stand by, watching the woman he loves become increasingly self-destructive, unable to stop her compulsive behavior.THIS STORY follows Eve Read, searching for her missing younger brother, and Marshall Sullivan, meteorologist. Each has started a deeply personal odyssey. Eve gave up her job and house, to travel the country distributing missing persons flyers and after eight months, she still has no leads. Marshall, trying to leave his painful past behind, set off on a solitary motorcycle journey to inspect every remote weather station in Australia. As the story unfolds, they meet when Marshall is injured in a collision with an emu and Eve gives him a ride to civilization. Something sparks between them and they decide to travel together to see what develops. But Eve cannot face the unthinkable, she may never find her brother, and she cannot continue searching forever if she wants a future with Marshall.OVERALL, a touching story about two wonderfully complex characters, what it means to love someone enough to put their needs before your own, and to forgive each other in order to pursue a second chance. This is storytelling at its best. You may also enjoy the complex characters and storytelling of N. Bruhns, A. Stuart, or E. Palfrey. For sweet, funny, heart touching romances with great descriptive imagery try Susan Fox and Cara Colter.

V.K. Ramsey’s very personal book approaches addiction recovery in a new and very different way, from what addicts or their family members, as well as codependents have been offered so far. He clearly highlights that fighting with, and eventually facing addiction, is something that deserves all respect, support and love! His supportive approach was created and continues to develop over almost twenty years, and being a recovered addict himself, stems from his personal experience of isolation with his pain and being labeled as a hopeless case, who was very much left to his own devises. His research is wide-spread and in-depth, his unwavering care in suggesting an array of ways to help oneself as an addict heart-warming, his quest to uncover the truth behind one’s pain as well as the root-cause of an addiction is relentless, and his courage to share his own journey, write about self-love, mindfulness as well as compassion, is inspiring! Attempting to find the right approach towards healing an addiction, it starts with, that addiction is not a disease, contrary to what everyone might have been told or to what more or less every author suggests and continues to find a solution and offers effective recovery strategies. Stating that addiction, in its essence, is a bio psychosocial disorder and as such, requires clear understanding and a holistic treatment, the author finds it imperative that anyone who suffers from addiction needs to be treated simultaneously on the mental, emotional, physical as well as spiritual level. Why? Because he rightly uncovers that the widespread ‘disease model’ of addiction does not solve the problem and worse, dehumanizes the individual. Yet when one tries to really understand addiction as a behavioral disorder, which ignited into existence through suffering and pain, one can finally treat it effectively and achieve the long term results every addict truly hoped for!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. and I think books like these should be out there to help people By Vincent I personally know people who have fought addictions, some of which succeeded and others who didn’t. I’ve had to deal with some tough habits myself, and I think books like these should be out there to help people. What I liked about this book, is that it shows examples of people who struggled, things that were done about drugs, and especially the part where it talks about solutions. I think anyone looking for help might even just skip to that part, just to get their problem solved.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This book is a must have!!! Love it!! By Shirley A McGough thia book is amazing. It has given me so many fresh ideas to take my drumming to a different level. It's not a book that you'll want to just open up and read cover to cover and move on, each lesson in the book is something that you can work on and develop as far as your imagination can take it. I Was blown away when I discovered Jost when I attended pasic a few years ago, he is such an amazing drummer with a jaw dropping melodic style. I was extremely excited when I heard about this book and couldn't wait to get my hands on it. And now I can't put it down!! Very good buy! Highly recommend!!

Tons of tracks on the CD so you can hear what's going on. Things like the split groove and switch groove give you some great ideas on how things that you think you can already play can sound and feel like they are new. So far, I am going slow but even as far as I got, applying Jost's ideas are making a big difference.

A perfect first reader in Russian, both for those learning to read and those who are learning Russian as a foreign language. Short words, simple sentences and wonderful pictures make for easy reading in four funny stories. Find out how to deal with annoying flies, learn the difference between the oak and the beech, became friends with a couple of yaks and help a sad elephant. Simply look inside! "Снег, жара и слон" -- третья четырехбуквенная книжка в серии, самая большая и самая цветная. К тому же она полна советов. Как отличить дуб от липы, что делать с надоедливой мухой, чем помочь печальному продрогшему слону и что ответить яку-зануде на вопрос "а ты кто?" Короткие слова, простые предложения, чудесные картинки и смешные истории!

No doubt Tanja's books are a source of fascination for children, but grown-ups will also enjoy the subtle humour, the coherence and the clear point of each story. I can hardly live on without more books by Tanja Russita.

Funny and easy to read By inna Funny and easy to read, with an unexpected ending in each story - this book is perfect for inspiring beginning readers to read - and provides the satisfaction of having read an entire book. Every word is carefully selected not to exceed four letters and yet to concisely create an exciting story line. The first story is a touching tale of a struggle and reconciliation between a boy and a fly (hint: note the sun movement in the window;) ) - all contained in 10 words.Next we get acquainted with some trees -see if you can recognise them! And next we meet a yak and his charming friends - all created by a witty play on words. Last but not the least comes a story of a poor homeless elephant and his cute helpful friends, with a happy ending that made my kids smile and reread the whole story a couple more times.

Finding the humour in the smallest situations, and conveying it perfectly with only a few strokes and even fewer words. Because they are so few, the inclosed meaning becomes even more obvious and vivid. Reading these short stories and feeling with the expressive personalities lets you take a pleasant little break from life`s seriousness. Take in a different, charming perspective on things for a change, while learning some new Russian words at the same time!
