Good information, more lawyer-English and plain-English By LeCreaux Duplicates much of the information covered in required training classes for a Texas Concealed Handgun License (CHL). If you've never been to a CHL class and/or are considering getting a CHL then this book will explain what you're getting yourself into.Although the teaser states "in plain English for everyone to understand", I did not find that to be the case. While there are segments of plain English, most of the book is in a style only a lawyer could love. Makes sense, since the authors are attorneys. Have you ever heard a computer programmer explain something computer-related in what they call "plain English"? Disclaimer: I have a degree in Computer Science and 30 years experience in the field.There's not as many "real world scenarios" as the teasers imply. Usually those are little generic "tip" boxes here and there. But what really IS useful are the legal cases that are referenced. You can Google-search them and read about an actual event. The actual court documents will explain why John Doe used a gun and what the Texas courts did about it. Unfortunately this book doesn't do any more than state "see John Doe vs Texas". The book doesn't even link them to the web. I really wish the book would expand on specific cases.This book is good for someone thinking about becoming a Texas gun owner. Current Texas gun owners will read 25-30 pages between finding something they didn't already know. Either way, you will be wading through 300+ pages of the lawyer version of "plain English".

VanderMate If you're a residing Texas residence weather you carry or not this covers laws and ordinances covering all of Texas and all types of weapons. I started reading an area of concern to me and ended up into several chapters later, just couldn't put it down. I would bet the majority of our Texans would wonder why they had not known about it before. A must have if you live in Texas and have ANY type of weapon.

I consider myself reasonably educated on my rights as a Texas citizen, and as a Texas gun owner. So when I purchased a hard copy of this book and started reading, I was a bit surprised at how little I actually understood in a practical sense. The book is incredibly comprehensive... It covers far more, in better detail, than what you'd get in a license course. A course will cover most, if not all the topics, but not the nitty gritty hows and whys of the Texas legal system.I especially appreciated the chapters covering your general rights, as granted by the U.S. constitution, as well as the Texas constitution. If you aren't a gun owner, there's still a lot to gain from reading the book. If anything, I feel if I was called to serve on a jury for a case involving gun use, I'd have a better grasp of what lawyers from both sides are motivated to accomplish, regardless of the guilt/innocence of the defendant.For that alone, I feel like it's helped me become a better citizen.

By AngelofPeace Scott Smith is an amazing writer who understands suffering much deeper than most writers I have ever read from! It is true that our world is plagued with suffering and Scott really breaks down our questions and presents a great alternative outlook. He opens our mind to vast possibilities from the normal atheistic view or religious view. At the end of the page, I was in awe because I left with an urge to search for more wisdom. I look forward to his other books in the future.

I learned the most from his summary of evidence for the supernatural. He debunks the scientific "debunkers" who don't want us to know that: double-blind experiments show measurable telepathy does take place; prominent scientists, after examining a wide array of evidence carefully, now believe that UFOs cannot be accounted for with mundane explanations; some NDEs cannot possibly be written off as mere hallucinations; and a common sense approach to reports of ghosts shows some cases cannot be dismissed as nonsense.After establishing a supernatural foundation for spiritual belief, he examines the religious explanations as to why there is so much suffering and evil in this world and finds their explanations wanting. In the end he suggests an alternative path of spirituality that squares up with the brute facts of life yet provides hope for what lies beyond this world.

By Lauris Olups This book does a great job at addressing contradictions and issues in different religions and philosophies trying to explain the nature of reality and suffering. Most of use are familiar with criticisms of Christianity, yet I always had the feeling that other religions suffered from similar problems. It felt like someone is finally giving these hunches of mine a voice. Yet the book does make a case for the supernatural, but starting from the position of excluding - if none of the popular choices make sense, what can we possibly be left with? I agree with the other reviewers that the first couple of chapters could have been an addendum rather than the introduction to the book, cause it really gets going just after those.

Aphra Behn was a prolific and well established writer but facts about her remain scant and difficult to confirm. What can safely be said though is that Aphra Behn is now regarded as a key English playwright and a major figure in Restoration theatre. Aphra was born into the rising tensions to the English Civil War. Obviously a time of much division and difficulty as the King and Parliament, and their respective forces, came ever closer to conflict. There are claims she was a spy, that she travelled abroad, possibly as far as Surinam. By 1664 her marriage was over (though by death or separation is not known but presumably the former as it occurred in the year of their marriage) and she now used Mrs Behn as her professional name. Aphra now moved towards pursuing a more sustainable and substantial career and began work for the King's Company and the Duke's Company players as a scribe. Previously her only writing had been poetry but now she would become a playwright. Her first, “The Forc’d Marriage”, was staged in 1670, followed by “The Amorous Prince” (1671). After her third play, “The Dutch Lover”, Aphra had a three year lull in her writing career. Again it is speculated that she went travelling again, possibly once again as a spy. After this sojourn her writing moves towards comic works, which prove commercially more successful. Her most popular works included “The Rover” and “Love-Letters Between a Nobleman and His Sister” (1684–87). With her growing reputation Aphra became friends with many of the most notable writers of the day. This is The Age of Dryden and his literary dominance. From the mid 1680’s Aphra’s health began to decline. This was exacerbated by her continual state of debt and descent into poverty. Aphra Behn died on April 16th 1689, and is buried in the East Cloister of Westminster Abbey. The inscription on her tombstone reads: "Here lies a Proof that Wit can never be Defence enough against Mortality." She was quoted as stating that she had led a "life dedicated to pleasure and poetry."

When Earth is discovered, the majority are against conquering the existing civilization. Tao, a Mercutian who rebelled against the passive government, pushed through his plans to conquer Earth. Miela, the oldest daughter of one of the top families decides to make the dangerous journey to Earth to warn the people of Earth of Tao's plans. She meets Alan, son of the head of the Harvard observatory staff. As her story unfolds, Alan falls in love with the beautiful, winged Miela. She persuades him to go with her to Mars to stop Tao from taking over both planets. There are four main characters, two Marcutains and two Earthers working together to stop the one man that would destroy the civilizations of both worlds, making himself leader above all. Imaginative, delightful, and enjoyable to young and old.

We are transported to a vividly developed planet with different races and civilizations. This 1920 story is a prequel to the Tama of the Light Country trilogy. It partly reflects the fact that much less was known about this planet back then and partly that it is a work of sheer imagination, perhaps wish fulfillment fantasy. It contains Cummings' sense of wonder and love of the exotic. When he sends you to an alien planet it is exactly that. To me the strongest point about this story is its thoroughgoing realization. It has characters I really care about, you get into their minds and live among these strange people and their ways. Unlike much contemporary fiction, it has a good moral compass.The people of mercury, desiring more living space, led by Tao, who recruited many followers sent a spaceship to Earth as a trial balloon to test their weapons against our technology. The oldest daughter of one of Mercury;s aristocratic families decides to go to Earth to warn us of the impending danger. Miela meets Alan, son of the Harvard observatory staff. They become deeply involved in the fight to save the Earth from this foreign invasion and Mercury from Tao's tyrannical dictatorship. This is a great action adventure novel!

30 of 30 people found the following review helpful. Motivational, not a practical guide. By Florida Gunkholer Not at all what I expected. There is not much specific to Kindle here. It would apply to anyone wanting to achieve anything but then the author would not have been able to exploit his targeted audience the way that he has. I was interested in the subject matter of the book but disappointed by the lack of practical and useable information. I find it difficult to cull the information I need from all the on-line forums and had hoped to get at least some of it here. Most of the writing was motivational (make a list of your goals to achieve your goals, yadda, yadda, yadda). "If I did it you can do it too" type of stuff. Not at all what I expected and I'll be damned if I am going to chant my goals fifteen times a day like the little engine that could. I expected nuts and bolts as it related specifically to Kindle and CreateSpace which this did not. The author has targeted "wannabee" writers as his audience and that is certainly working for him. This book just stops suddenly (I suppose after what the author figured was a dollar's worth of writing) without revealing anything at which point we are told it is Part One of a series that will ultimately reveal the information we are looking for, though we are not told after how many more volumes in the series and at what dollar cost or if it ever will. I found the title misleading and the promo material downright dishonest and I feel like I have been professionally duped out of a dollar.

Disappointing By Assisting the Reader “Fast and Furious: Writing for Amazon and Kindle (The Easy Way to Write)” by Bob Parnell states in a beginning chapter, “I believe this is the only writing resource you need right now. Read it, and the rest will follow.” What a sweeping promise that is not fulfilled by the end of the little book. I didn't give it One Star as I never say "I hate" something but it's certainly not "Okay" which is Two Starts.As it turns out, this is the first book of a series so, clearly it’s not going to contain anticipated pearls of wisdom. Unless I missed something somewhere else, I was not aware that this book was just a chatty introduction to the author’s early years devoid of substance.There are multiple formatting mistakes such as word spacing and punctuation spacing, in addition, spelling mistakes and punctuation marks omitted. It’s as though he decided to whip something up just to publish.The financial outlay is not the issue, it’s the disappointment in not receiving the anticipated information that this author is capable of.

By joseph maas Well for one thing, I really don't care for e-books that are primarily up-sells for other e-books. And yes, this one reads like a tease all the way though. (And none of the other parts the "course" are available as of yet.)Be that as it may, for a buck? Well I guess. That is, if you really need someone to tell you to write down your goals, put them on an index card and yell them out loud; then so be it. Or if you need someone to tell you that you can't write without making time to write. (Huh?) Or if you need convincing that the old publishing industry is rapidly being replaced by the current, on-going deluge of e-books. Or if you need to read about someone who swapped his job, wife, house, and what have you, in exchange for being a published author. Or how his children's book didn't quite work out the way he wanted it to.Goal setting? Prioritizing one's life? Putting your readers first? Well sure, but quite honestly there are next to zero specifics about "Writing for Amazon and Kindle" in this e-book.Rob, I'm not trying to dent your mileage with this thing. I did enjoy some of the cheer-leading, and the e-book is well written. But honestly? This would have been better published on Tumblr with links included for your other works. Then I think your readership trust would have been retained (at lest for this poor soul) and your included promos would have found more exposure.

As technology has advanced, the focus has changed from bedside care and comfort to maintaining machines and equipment. As accreditation demands have increased and survey results have become increasingly important we have focused on paper and reports. When did we stop spending time with patients? Sitting at there bedside? Holding their hand? Spending time with their family? Susan sets forth some thought provoking examples with insight from a patient's point of view as well as simple talking points and resolutions. Great read!

When I find a new author whose novel has delighted me, enlightened me By Ellen Carr When I find a new author whose novel has delighted me, enlightened me, kept me in suspense, kept me entralled, you can bet your bottom dollar I'll go back for more. After a first taste of Christine Price's book entitled VAN DER BIJL I looked forward to reading more of her books. The Root Cellar did not disappoint. Set in Russia during the Tzar's reign and the years following, I found myself keenly following the life of the main character, a Jew orphaned as a baby and raised by Christians. Price kept me in suspense as to how Josif was going to mark out his path in life. The background of Russian history, the 2 world wars was well researched and in a few cases were very interesting to this reader who was not aware of of certain factual incidents. Definitely creating a folder on my Kindle for Christine Price.

Through his adventures in life, he meets remarkable people, both good and bad. He grows up and is able to use his gift of mathematics to push himself ahead and focus on what is dear to him. I enjoyed the book because I didn't know where it was going and it ended up a great read because it is so full of life and the small details that make it interesting. Written very well and thoroughly researched, I highly recommend it.

If will give you hope and practical ideas for changing how you feel about your life. Greg also does personal coaching and his program is life changing and really works. I can't recommend both of them more highly. He will show you how to change your fundamental beliefs about yourself and your life - and changing these changes how you experience everything that happens to you. By Amazon Customer I loved the way the author, Greg Thredgold, weaved the the principles he was teaching--or keys, as he terms them--one into another. With a self-help book, the biggest mistake I typically see is that authors tend to segment their points too rigidly, as if they are separate boxes. The problem with that is that the reader then has a tough time understanding the concept as a whole instead of as a variety of concepts. When that happens, the reader usually only takes away one or two of the sub-concepts rather than the message as a whole. Thredgold does a great job of making sure that we understand all the principles. Very well done here! Also, the book does a great job of establishing a clear foundation. I loved the quote from Mark Twain about the two best days in life--the day you were born and the day you find out why. The best part about this is that the book builds on this foundation while reminding the reader of his or her purpose. That is key and it really centered the book. It also kept bringing me back to the why. The author also does a great job of integrating activities for the reader to do throughout the book. I liked that there were enough for the reader to gain something from, but that you didn't feel like you had to do an activity in every single chapter. That would have been forced and I could tell that the activities were natural parts of the 7 keys. For example, writing down one's goals. I also liked how Thredgold reminded the reader to do that, as well. Most important, he does a great job of making the reader feel like he is right there with us--every step of the way--as we walk our difficult journey through the difficulties of life. Well done, sir!

If you have depression and feel like no one else can relate to your situation or understands this book will express many of the feelings and experiences you may be facing, and how to overcome and change your outlook and better your life. I was surprised to learn that I was not the only one to feel some of the same feelings as well as the experiences and that others do understand the fight and struggle to overcome and win. I like the fact it is written from personal feelings and experiences to help others who have the desire or searching for the desire of happiness. Some of my favorite chapters were about rainbows, not just seeing life in black and white but looking for the rainbows. And the small light bulb moments in life. And taking one step at a time and not looking at the staircase ahead. But most of all the end about taking the ride and enjoying it. I know this book gave me a lot to think about as well as a lot to write down. It made sense in a way other books have not. I would recommend reading this book if your searching for happiness or may be in a dark place and want to find a way out into the light of life. I know the person who wrote this book and would like to say Thank you! It made sense, it hit home, it struck a chord. You get it, you have lived it you understand thank you for not letting fear stand in your way and sharing in a way from which now I can learn.

Argueta has created several bilingual poetry books that celebrate traditional Latin American dishes – including Guacamole, Sopa de frijoles / Bean Soup, and Arroz con leche / Rice Pudding – and Salsa is just as mouth-watering. I love how he uses beautiful language to stir the senses, appealing to readers’ taste and smell with scrumptious descriptions of vegetables and herbs; sound by drawing comparisons between ingredients and musical instruments; and touch by weaving together the acts of cooking and dancing.As a lover of spicy food, I particularly enjoy Argueta’s ode to hot chiles, complete with imagery that clearly evokes the crackly, wrinkled skin and the tingly burn of the peppers. Inviting Tonatiuh to illustrate this book is a perfect choice, since his historically inspired images reflect Argueta’s description of the history of the molcajete, the mortar and pestle crafted from volcanic rock that people have long used to grind vegetables and spices. This connection of the past and present through both words and illustrations makes Salsa an especially delicious dish for me.(My much loved molcajete.)

A Fascinating Coming-of-age Tale Illuminates a Misunderstood Community By Elisabeth Khan This gem-like novel, like everything else by this author ("The Feminine Art" ;"A Mismatched Braid"), deserves a wider audience. Weam Namou writes about the American Chaldean community that she was born in with great love and a subtle sense of humor, without sweeping its imperfections under the rug. In doing so, she is the only author that I know of who is able to shed some light on this tight-knit group of Middle-Eastern immigrants, known by most people in the Detroit area only as the "Arab" owners of their local supermarket, party store, or gas station. In the Old Testament, Abraham is described as coming from "Ur of the Chaldeans," located in Mesopotamia, the fertile land between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, home to the ancient Babylonians and Assyrians — present-day Iraq. Not surprising then, that Chaldeans are quick to point out how, as speakers of a modern form of Aramaic (the language Jesus spoke), they are not Arabs (although most speak Arabic as a second language) and they are not Muslims, but devout Catholics, one of the earliest Christian communities in the world. Nevertheless, their day-to-day culture shares a lot with that of their Arab neighbors, especially in the realm of folk tales, cuisine, and family values. Chaldeans started migrating to the USA fairly early in the 20th century, their numbers swelling from the late 1960s, when Saddam Hussein's Ba'ath Party came to power in their homeland, and even more dramatically as a result of the Iraq wars and the political instability following them. Because of their strong mutual support system, they were able to carve out a prosperous new life, without disappearing into the American melting pot. The book's protagonist and narrator, Merwat Putris (aged 19 at the start of the book), remembers nothing of the country where she was born, relying instead on stories from her elder sisters to understand her family's roots. Almost every situation in her life evokes memories of those tales, which include family lore as well as stories from the Arabian Nights and the Bible. These many stories-within-the-story are the spice that gives this novel its unique flavor. Merwat is expected to marry a suitable boy within her community, and pursues an associate's degree in a local community college while waiting for an acceptable suitor to present himself. Marriage (leading to financial security and kids) and a honeymoon in an exotic locale are presented as the rewards for preserving her virtue, and above all her reputation, in the midst of the temptations of America. Observing the lives of her siblings, Merwat fears that what follows may be an anti-climax of sorts, filled with dirty diapers and in-law quarrels, and she secretly aspires to a life of travel and freedom. The writer skilfully takes us inside Merwat's head and heart as she deals with the difficulties imposed on her by her cultural background while taking her first tentative steps into adult life and romantic love. With equal skill Ms. Namou unveils the cultural richness of a whole unknown world that thrives within the walls of our Chaldean neighbors' homes.

By Jim Clark A film version of Hamlet from the 1940s began with a statement about the hero: "this is the tragedy of a man who could not make up his mind." With a slight change in wording a description could be made of the very different heroine of The Flavor of Cultures: this is the tragedy of a young woman who could not make up her own mind. Mervat, nineteen, spends most of the story coming to grips with her Middle Eastern background while living in modern day Detroit among fellow Chaldeans. Although her neighbors hail from ancient Christian communities in Iraq they have deep ties and strong habits of thought that have developed over millennia. Now Mervat must translate the old rules, customs, beliefs, and ancient legends that comprise her viewpoint into something more amenable to two different cultures, to put it mildly. Weam Namou sets this coming of age story of Mervat, the youngest of four sisters, in a family who emigrated here when she was two years old. While her awareness of Iraq is almost entirely second-hand, her status as an American remains unresolved. She had not yet been called to take her naturalization exam. This left her "stuck between these two worlds like a secret between a gossiper and her neighbor." Mervat keenly feels a void where there should be her own personal story. And, with her "huge ego" she sets out to create an as yet unwritten but defining story of her life. So, in a land of plenty she takes a dim view of her of her sisters' husbands and determines to marry well - not beneath herself as she believes her sister have done. Her husband-to-be will give her a better life than her sisters have settled for. But this is America and she pursues her future with the excessive gusto redolent of too many in this culture: she starves herself to look beautiful and maddeningly desirable. Although she does not leave herself emaciated the self-destructiveness is quietly at work - and in some ways, not so quietly. Without giving away the story line, most of this tale revolves around Mervat's inner struggle while pursuing the dashing young man of her seeming dreams, dashing Johnny - whose family can afford a Corvette among other nice things. But much of her struggle is often done in the supportive company of her older sisters and to a lesser degree her parents and the close-knit Chaldean community in Detroit. The most heartening aspect of this story is the loving, patient support of the sisters whose marital fates Mervat seeks to avoid. The sisters spend a lot of time sympathetically counseling their somewhat pampered and often misguided baby of the family. Mervat, it must be said, makes a fascinating narrator. While trying to figure out which rules to follow and what plans to make she regales the readers with the legends and customs of the very old world of the middle east - absolute catnip to anyone in a young culture that hungers for history beyond a couple of centuries. (If legends such as the princess and the Talking Bird, the Singing Tree, and the Golden Water gives you a pleasurable shudder, then this tale is for you.) But back to our story: the world becomes increasingly complicated and unclear as Mervat attempts to create her own story amidst some painful naiveté and unplanned results. The slings and arrows she willingly faces (unlike Hamlet) take quite a toll on her. And it takes time for her to venture outside of her secure community after absorbing some difficult lessons in humility.Helpful quibble department First, a spoiler alert: do not read this paragraph if you do not want to know a plot twist late in the novel. After the dust has settled on Mervat's self-destructive side the story picks up about nine or ten years later. She has a six-month old daughter with nary a word about the father, the family's reaction, much less the Chaldean neighbors' view of this. Ieman ("faith" in Chaldean which suggests Mervat has come to some resolution about her relationship with God) shows up with seemingly no reaction from others. The child comes across as theoretically (theologically?) connected to the story but in no other way. The lapse feels a little odd and out of place but it certainly does not ruin an otherwise good tale. It is safe to resume reading for those content to only let the author tell the story. This book tells a story of one woman's hard and sometimes flawed effort at distinguishing and eventually combining the important parts of divergent cultures into her life. Let us just say she makes a nice case for living by the lights of Ali Baba, God, and Emerson. That should also help explain why some of the rub thrived outside herself as well as within.Jim Clark

The book is naturally leading you to discover own problems and then goes beyond that, showing you ways to fix them. I liked the do's (be realistic!), I liked the dont's (don't make too many changes at one time). Take a read, I'm sure you'll have a good time!
