I have raised four daughters who are all now through college, married and fortunately have good jobs. But they had solid, consistent, caring parents who were very involved in their lives from infancy through adulthood. I know that every child does not have this luxury. This book is a guide for those children who may not have any adult that they can rely on for support. Or perhaps the child who doesn’t feel comfortable talking about sex, bullying, etc with their parents. The book is divided into chapters so it is also possible to “zero in” on what is troubling you before you commit to reading the entire book. What I liked were the letters and work sheets at the end of each chapter to reinforce what is being discussed.I think that this book has a lot of very sound advice but I personally don’t think that a 13 to 15 year old girl would purchase this book for themselves. At this age they have heard many of these subjects talked about in school or their church. I know that my 3 oldest girls had workshops and lectures about sex and how to say “no” and how to stay focused in life, take care of their own bodies, etc. But these three went to a private school. My youngest who went to a public school didn’t have anything like that in middle school, although there were workshops available to them through our church.I think that this book would be a good tool for a social worker, school psychologist or parents. The hard part will be getting them to read it. If a parent is going to give it to their child they should definitely read it themselves first to make sure that they agree with all of the author’s suggestions.Thank you to Ms. Ferentz for allowing me to read a copy of her book in exchange for an honest review.

Self-Help for Young Women By Jill Bemis Teacher and author, Ellen Ferentz, has seen much in her classroom and cares about situations high school girls encountered. This guide looks at different scenarios and provides examples to review and space to records reflections and action steps. There is a lot of common sense basic information presented. The one downfall is no resources are listed for those girls at most risk and need external interventions.
