A traumatic brain injury is a life-changing event, affecting an individual’s lifestyle, ability to work, relationships—even personality. Whatever caused it—car crash, work accident, sports injury, domestic violence, combat—a severe blow to the head results in acute and, often, lasting symptoms. People with brain injury benefit from understanding, patience, and assistance in recovering their bearings and functioning to their full abilities.

In The Traumatized Brain, neuropsychiatrists Drs. Vani Rao and Sandeep Vaishnavi—experts in helping people heal after head trauma—explain how traumatic brain injury, whether mild, moderate, or severe, affects the brain. They advise readers on how emotional symptoms such as depression, anxiety, mania, and apathy can be treated; how behavioral symptoms such as psychosis, aggression, impulsivity, and sleep disturbances can be addressed; and how cognitive functions like attention, memory, executive functioning, and language can be improved. They also discuss headaches, seizures, vision problems, and other neurological symptoms of traumatic brain injury.

By stressing that symptoms are real and are directly related to the trauma, Rao and Vaishnavi hope to restore dignity to people with traumatic brain injury and encourage them to ask for help. Each chapter incorporates case studies and suggestions for appropriate medications, counseling, and other treatments and ends with targeted tips for coping. The book also includes a useful glossary, a list of resources, and suggestions for further reading.

Review

We can thank Drs. Rao and Vaishnavi for this remarkable contribution to patients, families, and clinicians. Few professionals, doctors included, know how to deliver their highly informed knowledge and experience in ways that lay readers can comprehend and use.

(New York Journal of Books)

Individuals who have experienced a TBI, as well as their families, will find this book useful and comforting, both for its clear explanations and its clinical guidance.

(Library Journal)

The Traumatized Brain puts victims and their families back in command: rewiring the brain, reshaping behaviors, inspiring compassion, and restoring one’s sense of self.

(Examineer.com)

An approachably human and effectively informative book on a complicated and painful injury.

(Johns Hopkins Magazine)

The Traumatized Brain is a great resource for anyone with a loved one who has suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Whether you’re a caregiver, co-worker, friend, or survivor, this book is filled with useful information to help you understand and be prepared for the different symptoms of TBI and how TBI affects the brain.

(Amy Zellmer, writer, photographer, and TBI survivor)

This book will challenge and encourage the reader. Whether an interested lay person, a caretaker, a family member, or a professional in the medical, nursing, or social work fields, readers will find this pioneering book a useful guide to the complexities of traumatic brain injury.

(From the Foreword by Peter V. Rabins, MD, MPD, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, coauthor of The 36-Hour Day: A Family Guide to Caring for Persons with Alzheimer Disease, Related Dementing Illnesses, and Memory Loss in Later Life)

If ever there was a book that truly could save your life it would be this one. Drs. Rao and Vaishnavi have written a critical manual for parents, family, essentially anyone, to help recognize and explain the warning signs of a TBI. Without visible symptoms, sufferers have long remained silent or been deemed 'crazy,' but this important book not only details the physiological, cognitive and behavioral changes in the brain, it offers hope through treatment.

(Bob Woodruff, ABC News Journalist)

We are faced with an epidemic of traumatic brain injury (TBI) among victims of sports, accidents, and wars. The cognitive, emotional, and behavioral consequences of such injuries are varied and complex. Using a contemporary understanding of cognitive neuroscience and a gift for distilling complex ideas, Drs. Rao and Vaishnavi present a clear and coherent picture of TBI. Informed by their own substantial clinical expertise, they also offer practical advice, making this guide essential reading for caregivers and family members as well as the general clinical practitioner.

(Anjan Chatterjee, MD, FAAN, University of Pennsylvania, author of The Aesthetic Brain: How We Evolved to Desire Beauty and Enjoy Art)

Doctors Rao and Vaishnavi have written a valuable and timely book that is long overdue.  It contains not only an excellent summary of TBI and its effects, but also strategies to deal with those effects. I highly recommend this excellent book.

(Thom Mayer, MD, Medical Director, NFL Players Association)

The Traumatized Brain remains a valuable resource for brain-injured clients and their caregivers, and it can help bridge the language reference gap between providers and patients.

HOW TO RECOVER FROM THE TRAUMA OF BRAIN INJURY By Andrew Leso I purchased THE TRAUMATIZED BRAIN on AMAZON after it was selected and reviewed in JOHNS HOPKINS MAGAZINE as an approachable and effectively informative book on a complicated and painful injury.Drs. Vani Rao and Sandeep Vaishnave's THE TRAUMATIZED BRAIN made the origins, causes, symptoms, up to date treatment options for traumatized brain injury (TBI) understandable to a layperson. I realized the "big picture" of the structure and function of the human without using a medical dictionary. The authors' ultimate goal is to help the Traumatic Brain Injured (TBI) survivor, and/or the caretakers, family members, and the professionalspecialists in the medical, nursing, and social work fields best assist the TBI survivor to learn how to recover from the trauma of brain injury. THE TRAUMATIZED BRAIN will encourage removal of remnants of lingering stigma still associated with psychiatry and mental illness.Professional specialists in the medical, nursing, and social work fields will gain education about exciting developments still in the research stage. I read this page turning THE TRAUMATIZED BRAIN one time so far. I intent to reread. I found this book helpful for my own emotional and mood problems. Reading THE TRAUMATIZED BRAIN is a journey with the authors exploring the structure and function of the brain, the various ways traumatic brain injury affects the brain, and the emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and general neurological symptoms of THE TRAUMATIZEDBRAIN.

The Traumatized Brain is an amazing resource for anyone who wants to understand brain injury By Joelle Ridgeway The Traumatized Brain is an amazing resource for anyone who wants to understand brain injury. The authors take a very complex medical condition and explain it in a way that anyone with or without a background in brain injury can understand. There are great case examples provided for areas explained by the authors, making the information very practical for the reader. Caregivers and other people who know someone with a brain injury can really benefit from this book. It explains the challenges faced by those who have these injuries and helps the reader to understand how to support someone with a brain injury. As a brain injury professional, I loved the book and will recommend it to people who need a resource to help them to understand brain injury and its impact on people who experience these injuries. The book is a gift to the field of brain injury, well done!

Good, but By ja in va Lots of interesting, fascinating and some quite surprising facts about the many creatures we share this planet with and well worth reading to learn some things, some pretty cool and some pretty scary. But some that aren't either. Like a certain fox mentioned. Well house cats do the same thing here when hunting pocket gophers and robins do the same when searching for earthworms. Another problem is that some more info would be appreciated at times like where some of these crearutes live like the reel fish and what are the odds of me eating one. And a rather unfortunate problem with many of these factoid books is the seeming compulsion that many editors of these types of books seem to have and that's adding a "humorous" comment either before or after the factoid. Honest folks, these things are a detraction I could do without. But just my opinion. Maybe some enjoy them. Regardless, well worth reading for someone like me who enjoys rhe learning that goes along with these trivia books. Good for those with a trivial mind like mine.

Dzhomba: Kalmyk Tea is a study of the central food dish in the life of the Kalmyk people--a Mongol ethnicity, living in Russia for over 400 years. It is a collection of ethnographic information, ritual practices, folkloric texts, poetry, culinary descriptions, literary commentary, historic, and explanatory information. Most of the literary texts are presented in English, Russian, and Kalmyk and explanatory material in English. Translations of poems are the work of different translators, many of whom are recognized poets in their own right. Two National Poets of the Republic of Kalmykia are contributors to the project. The book traces the evolution of Kalmyk tea (dzhomba) from an everyday food dish, connected to the Kalmyk conception of the sacred, to a drink that has become a marker of ethnicity, largely serving a symbolic and group-integrative function. The first known Western reactions to the tea by literary giants Alexander Pushkin and Alexandre Dumas, père are part of the historic narrative. The book is a multi-year effort of an international team of scholars, poets, and translators.

More Than Just Tea By Angus This book opens a window into the culture of the little-known Republic of Kalmykia through the device of explaining all about Kalmyk tea--a black tea made with milk, butter, and salt--a nourishing tea suitable for a nomadic people living in a cold climate. The beverage serves an important role as a gesture of hospitality in this culture as the book makes clear through proverbs, riddles, and poetry. The author's enthusiasm is obvious throughout the book. The expert will appreciate the work of comparative literature here. There are texts in Russian, Kalmyk, and English. But the general reader will be rewarded since the English language translations and explanations are geared to make the material accessible to an American audience. This book is a good value and an excellent resource for both the expert and the armchair traveler.

By Sai-B This book serves as an excellent introduction into the culture of Europe's only indigenous Buddhists - the Kalmyks. The Kalmyks moved to the steppes of southern Russian in the 17th century and a small but vibrant community immigrated to the United States in the 1950's. While the authors focus on the importance of tea in Kalmyk culture (with texts in English, Russian and Kalmyk!) anyone interested in learning more about about this fascinating but generally little known group will find Dzhomba: Kalmyk Tea a helpful and enjoyable read.

Warm and Informative-Clearly laid out in 3 languages: Excellent exploration of things that come across/get lost in Translation By bklynmom Excellent introduction to a little known culture. Written in 3 languages - so if you have familiarity with more than 1 of them, it's nice to read in different languages and realize the subtle differences in meaning that come across/get lost in translation. Love that it was laid out that way. A warm tone stemming from the author's love and nostalgia for his late mother and his finding her again, through exploring her culture.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Excellent! Un film extraordinaire pourrait être produit sur la base de ce livre !The Wandering Jew (also available in English) is a powerful long novel, full of surprises, which displays a very attractive philosophy. It is easy to understand why this book was blacklisted by Rome, since the author shows an undisguised grudge against the Jesuits and against the hypocritical church hierarchy. It was probably well deserved considering all the abuses committed with impunity by this order. However, the author nevertheless admires Christian charity in its pure and simple form. A terrific movie could be made based on this book!

This Series 63 exam study guide uses Plain English and concise explanations as it ticks off the items mentioned on the NASAA Series 63 exam outline point-by-point. To reduce your frustration in obtaining your Series 63 license, we try to make sure each sample question in our Pass The 63 Online Practice Question Bank™ is explained within this textbook. In fact, we encourage you to use this study guide while working through the Series 63 sample questions. When you encounter a tough practice question, you can quickly and easily look it up in this textbook in order to come away from the question with a deeper understanding of the topics involved. Remember that the Series 63 license exam is not a memorization test but, rather, a "competency exam.” Too many Series 63 exam candidates go to the testing center expecting to simply recognize a few vocabulary terms when, in fact, passing your test requires you to work with the information at a much deeper level. That's why we explain things in a way you'll both understand and remember at the testing center. It takes more work on our end, but we feel our job is to make things easier on your end. We also take what you learn in the pages of this Series 63 exam study guide to a higher level by presenting you with over 450 challenging questions in our test bank. However, our sample questions are not designed to merely trick you--which most people find discouraging and confusing at best. Rather, our Series 63 sample questions are designed to help you learn the information as you improve your ability to eliminate the incorrect answer choices you will see when taking the Series 63 exam. Be sure to keep a notebook filled with all that you learn from working the questions and reading the helpful explanations that follow. For an extra edge, try writing your own variations of practice questions in this same notebook, something our tutoring clients have found extremely helpful. Finally, go to www.examzone.com to take the Go / No Go Exams to see if you are really ready to take your 63. Pass the 63™ is your guide to a passing score on the Series 63 exam. This textbook is at the same time in-depth and easy to read. We don't skimp on the details found on the NASAA outline. Rather, we skimp on the filler found in many of the more tedious license exam manuals on the market. To give yourself an edge on this difficult license exam buy this book and then go to www.examzone.com to purchase the practice questions, Go / No Go Exams and other Series 63 study materials. This test is not easy. The best time to get started is . . . now.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Walker's version was the difference for me... By Matthew Gioglio I took the series 63 exam 4 times before passing! I tried online study websites and other books the first 3 times but was still not getting a passing score. I did not pass until I ordered Robert Walker's test materials. And finally, I got an 85!So what was different? Walker's style is written in plain, everyday language. The other things I used to study from seemed like a robot wrote it which made me try to memorize everything which is not the best way to try and pass the 63. It was much different with Walker's version. I felt like I was having a conversation with the instructer in my living room since it's written very matter of fact and doesn't try to be fancy or overly proper. This made me learn and understand the concepts rather than memorization. Oh and the practice questions are very realistic in relation to the test itself.Definitely go with Walker's test materials the first go around. You'll save yourself a lot of time and frustration... trust me on that one haha!

Would NOT have passed without it By Robert W Karstenson Ok if you took the time to read my other review on Pass the 6 great......if not here is a recap on Robert Walker and his EXTREMELY helpful books. Robert Walker took a subject matter that is normally dry and close to reading stereo instructions and made it (if not fun) very interesting. He did this by using plain English everybody can understand......being relate-able in his writing and using real life humorous examples from FINRA and NASAA. (get use to those two). If you have read or took the 6 then you know how dry the subject matter could be with the wrong book. The 63 is more technical and could be even more dry if NOT for Robert. I can't in all honesty say it was a fun read, BUT it was interesting, informative, and I CAN say that without this book, his DVD series, the online chapter tests, practice finals and GO/NO Go tests....I would not have passed. I found the 63 to be harder than the 6 because it (the 63) was written by lawyer like administrators and the way the questions were asked really made you think outside of standard definitions and practices. Robert does his best to explain it and give examples that are helpful and real world. I will, would, and have recommended this book series. I bought the full package including the online tests, practice exams and DVD's. I did not take advantage of the live video sessions, but if I go for the 65 I will......I think they could be very helpful in the fact that Robert would be there to answer questions as he goes over material.

It puts somewhat dry and complex rules and regulations into readable English. I purchased the whole study package, including the book, the DVDs and the online practice exams. The combined study tools helped reinforce the same knowledge and making comprehension/memorization a little easier. I passed with 82 and was thrilled with how little time I actually studied. Thank you Robert!!

By Sabrina Walters They say that words are powerful and that they have the ability to create a moment and the strength to destroy it. And I also think that words are a useful tool in love making as it can boost each others desire in bed. That is why I purchased this book as it is a very informative and helpful book in using dirty talks in love making. This book has a lot of tips on how to keep the fire burning in bed with just words. Also, it has great tips on how women should take the lead in bed. This book is perfect for couples who are deeply in love and wants their fire to last.

Ideal for use in either crime theory or race and crime courses, this is the only text to look at the array of explanations for crime as they relate to racial and ethnic populations. Each chapter begins with a historical review of each theoretical perspective and how its original formulation and more recent derivatives account for racial/ethnic differences. The theoretical perspectives include those based on religion, biology, social disorganization/strain, subculture, labeling, conflict, social control, colonial, and feminism. The author considers which perspectives have shown the most promise in the area of race/ethnicity and crime.

Criminological Perspectives on Race and Crime (Criminology and Justice Studies), by Shaun L. Gabbidon

Review

I have assigned Shaun Gabbidon's Criminological Perspectives on Race and Crime in my classes - and used it for my own research - since its first edition. This newest edition secures its place as an invaluable part of the criminological canon. It fills an important gap in the available volumes on race and crime by clearly, concisely, and comprehensively applying theory to this perennial topic. Students benefit from Gabbidon's accessible prose, and quickly grasp the importance of both theory and race in any discussion about crime and justice.

-Jonathon A. Cooper, Criminology, Indiana University of Pennsylvania

I have used and continue to use Shaun Gabbidon’s Criminological Perspectives on Race and Crime as the core text for the senior seminar, Race and Crime in the United States. Unlike any other book it addresses race from multiple theoretical perspectives and thus is indispensable in developing an understanding of the intersection of race and crime, and race qua white privilege of those who have created and applied theories of deviance and criminality.

-Sissy Bradford, Sociology, Texas A&M University-San Antonio

Gabbidon discusses the relevant criminological theories on race and ethnicity in a manner that is accessible to the reader, allowing for a succinct, yet powerful understanding of the importance of race and ethnicity. The third edition is a must have for undergraduate and graduate courses on race, ethnicity, and crime.

-Danny Madrid, Criminology & Criminal Justice, University of Nebraska, Omaha

Criminological Perspectives on Race and Crime takes us on an instructive journey through our past and present thinking about race, ethnicity, and crime. While pointing out the potential and the limits of varying criminological traditions, Gabbidon simultaneously confronts the issues that are top of mind for students. He asks readers to consider how racial and ethnic stereotyping influences crime and justice, whether a general theory of crime can be race-blind, how histories of racial conflict play out in crime and crime control, and if theories of crime and justice can be gender-specific and race-specific.

-Katherine Irwin, Sociology, University of Hawaii at Manoa

About the Author

Professor Gabbidon is the author of more than 100 scholarly publications including more than 60 peer-reviewed articles and 11 books. Dr. Gabbidon can be contacted at slg13@psu.edu

The American Presidency examines the constitutional foundation of the executive office and the social, economic, political, and international forces that have reshaped it along with the influence individual presidents have had. Authors Sidney Milkis and Michael Nelson look at each presidency broadly, focusing on how individual presidents have sought to navigate the complex and ever-changing terrain of the executive office and revealing the major developments that launched a modern presidency at the dawn of the twentieth century. By connecting presidential conduct to the defining eras of American history and the larger context of politics and government in the United States, this award-winning book offers perspective and insight on the limitations and possibilities of presidential power. In this Seventh Edition, marking the 25th anniversary of The American Presidency’s publication, the authors add new scholarship to every chapter, reexamine the end of George W. Bush’s tenure, assess President Obama’s first term in office, and explore Obama’s second term.

The American Presidency: Origins and Development, 1776-2014, by Sidney M. Milkis, Michael C. Nelson

Review "Weaving insightful treatments of major transformations of the presidency into a lively narrative that encompasses every chief executive, Milkis and Nelson have written an essential history of the office. Still going strong after a quarter of a century, The American Presidency has been a favorite text for generations of my students." -- Bruce Miroff "Milkis and Nelson's The American Presidency: Origins and Development, 1776-2014 is an outstanding introduction to the U.S. presidency. It is informative and crisply written. Students like it and it I find it very easy to teach from. It provides students the information they need on the history and development of the U.S. presidency in a format that is accessible without sacrificing intellectual rigor." -- David E. Lewis "The Milkis and Nelson text is an excellent example of how to ground Political Science within an historical setting and create a narrative of institutional development. It strikes a good balance between the presidency as an institution occupied by a strong singular personality and the presidency as the executive power of an entire country, growing larger as the country does as well. The chapters, while focusing on the iconic presidents, also do an effective job of framing presidential challenges within themes, such as war powers, hurdles in dealing with the bureaucracy, fighting for (or losing) authority within the political system, etc. The choice to begin with creating the constitutional president and then working through a chronological succession is beneficial for students to grasp how the institution has changed over time and just as importantly, why it has." -- Timothy Lindberg "I would not use anything else. Milkis and Nelson provide historical examples and interpretation of the important events in the history of the presidency and of how the presidency as an institution has changed over time. I don't think the book has any weaknesses. The writing is top notch. I've had only positive comments from students about the book." -- Kenneth Stevens

About the Author Sidney M. Milkis is the White Burkett Miller Professor in the Department of Politics and Faculty Associate in the Miller Center at the University of Virginia. He has written extensively on political history and American politics, with special attention to the presidency, political parties, and social movements. His books include The President and the Parties: The Transformation of the American Party System Since the New Deal (1993); Political Parties and Constitutional Government: Remaking American Democracy (1999); Presidential Greatness (2000), co-authored with Marc Landy; The American Presidency: Origins and Development, 1776 2011, 6th edition (2011), co-authored with Michael Nelson; and Theodore Roosevelt, the Progressive Party, and the Transformation of American Democracy (2009). He is the co-editor (with Jerome Mileur) of three volumes on twentieth-century political reform: Progressivism and the New Democracy (1999), The New Deal and the Triumph of Liberalism (2002), and The Great Society and the High Tide of Liberalism (2005). His articles have been published in Perspectives on Politics, Presidential Studies Quarterly, Political Science Quarterly, the Journal of Policy History, Studies in American Political Development, and numerous edited volumes.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Inspiration for Generation DIY By Philippe Vandenbroeck Young people in the Western world today face an uneasy predicament. On the one hand there are unlimited opportunities for self-development. Information glut, cheap travel, and an obsessive media spotlight on a wide range of societal challenges create an enormous pressure to contribute, to stand out from the crowd, to carve out one's own hyperindividual niche in this complex world. On the other hand secure, well-paying jobs are becoming scarce, and their disappearance also erodes traditional middle-class ideals. This is Generation DIY. They will have to find new formulas for success in a bigger and increasingly uncertain world. This book has been made with this particular audience in mind: young people about to start writing their own rulebook but too insouciant to be sensitive to good advice. ‚Paddle against the flow’ is a pile of inspirational quotes from a motley crowd of artists, designers, surfers and boarders, culled from the archive of counterculture Huck Magazine. Fifteen bucks may be a little steep for a mere collection of quotes. But I don’t mind that as long as they are sticky memes with significant corrosive potential. I’ve carried certain quotes around for years whilst they were worming their way into my subconscious only to reveal their true significance much later. For me the quotes collected between these two covers resonate quite strongly. They express the ethos of bottom-up creation and collaboration in a refreshingly straight-faced way. Just to take one example, I’m quoting filmmaker Robert Rodriguez: „If you want to make films, don’t say you want to make films. Just say you’re a filmmaker. People are very true to their identity. If your identity is someone who someday would like to make a film you’re going to remain someone who someday would like to may a film. If your identity is being a filmmaker, you’re going to do what filmmakers do, which is make stuff … ” Think about it. It’s true. There’s much more to reflect on in this modest publication, and that includes the brief, vigorous introduction by Douglas Coupland. Whilst I’m satisfied with the book’s content, its graphic design leaves me rather cold. Every quote is on a page faced by a photograph of drawing of the person quoted. The quality of the imagery varies and it’s been recycled in the front and back covers of the book. I think this could have been handled in a more imaginative way. I’d give the book 3,5 stars but I’m rounding up to 4.

Strunk & White for the Next Generation of Creators By JHD An amazing range of advice on topics of work, people, change and life from some of the most inspiring figures in culture today. You'll want to keep it on your desk, in your workshop drawer, or backpack to pull out and refer to again and again — whenever you feel blocked, are reordering priorities, or simply it's time to start something new.

This collection of aphorisms on living is subtitled “Lessons on life from doers, creators, and cultural rebels.” That pretty much sums it up. I sat down and read the entire collection in one sitting, but that’s not the way this book should be read. I would say this is a book to keep on your desk top, or next to your bed, wherever you keep those books you want to consult for inspiration on a daily basis. I had never heard of Huck Magazine before receiving this volume as part of Librarything’s Early Reviewers Program, but I will be looking for the periodical in the future. Taken from interviews that the magazine’s contributors have submitted, the texts in this volume are short, pithy, and well worth a second (or third) thought. Take this as an example, from Photographer Cheryl Dunn. “It’s good to make your mistakes while you’re young and not afraid. But you should never be afraid to make mistakes. Light moves at the speed of light. People forget the mistakes. Just keep making.” Having read that, I now want to know more about Cheryl Dunn. I would like to read the whole interview (because surely those five sentences are not the WHOLE interview). And there are fifty-nine of these bits of wisdom in the collection. Some of the people quoted are well known: Judd Apatow, Werner Herzog, Chuck Palahniuk, Dave Eggers. Some I’ve never heard of: Swoon, Boogie, Ed Templeton, C.R. Stecyk III. But all have something to say, something worth attending. There are times I receive a book from the Early Reviewers Program and I wonder what in the review caught my eye. This is one of those books, but, in a bit of serendipity, this is a book I will keep by my side and refer to again and again. Highly recommended!

In 2011 after a few undeniable experiences, I had to quit denying that I had medium abilities. I went from denial to terror. I had information that overwhelmed me, left me feeling helpless and much that I didn't even know where it was coming from. I spent a great deal of time feeling crazy. I WISH there had been a book like this when I started on my own journey. The book is classic Lisa, full of information but offered in a way that both the novice and the experienced intuitive or medium can gain valuable tools.I have no doubt this book will become a "must have" on the shelf of any person who works in the metaphysical field. If you are in doubt or just lost as to where to begin; this book should be your first stop.

The author goes into candid detail about her spiritual growth as a Psychic or Medium. She tells it in a way that is easy to read, and easy to identify with. This was a read I needed on my own path. She explains it in a way that teaches you to find your own path, yet guides you on how she got where she is. It is beautiful and insightful. To add a quote from the books pages, "It is often said that when the student is ready, the teacher appears."

When Thomas Jefferson struck a deal for the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, he knew he was adding a new national power to those specified in the Constitution, but he also believed his actions were in the nation’s best interest. His successors would follow his example, setting their own constitutional precedents. Tracing the evolution and expansion of the president’s formal power, Untrodden Ground reveals the president to be the nation’s most important law interpreter and examines how our commanders-in-chief have shaped the law through their responses to important issues of their time.             Reviewing the processes taken by all forty-four presidents to form new legal precedents and the constitutional conventions that have developed as a result, Harold H. Bruff shows that the president is both more and less powerful than many suppose. He explores how presidents have been guided by both their predecessors’ and their own interpretations of constitutional text, as well as how they implement policies in ways that statutes do not clearly authorize or forbid. But while executive power has expanded far beyond its original conception, Bruff argues that the modern presidency is appropriately limited by the national political process—their actions are legitimized by the assent of Congress and the American people or rejected through debilitating public outcry, judicial invalidation, reactive legislation, or impeachment. Synthesizing over two hundred years of presidential activity and conflict, this timely book casts new light on executive behavior and the American constitutional system.

Untrodden Ground: How Presidents Interpret the Constitution, by Harold H. Bruff

Review “Everyone knows that the Supreme Court interprets the Constitution. But in this magisterial book, Bruff shows that presidents have played the most important role in interpreting the Constitution over the course of the nation’s history—and have done so in a way that teaches us not just about the presidency but about the nature of the American Constitution itself. Bruff gives us an engaging account of how presidents from George Washington to Barack Obama have used the powers of their office, and anyone who is interested in the Constitution will learn from, and be challenged by, his original and subtle analysis of what our Presidents have done.” (David A. Strauss, University of Chicago Law School)"There is no better book for understanding how presidents interpret the Constitution than Untrodden Ground. No one knows the subject better than Bruff. His book is an instant classic, drawing on a lifetime of learning, invaluable experience, extraordinary research, and unique and profound insights. Everyone, including presidents and the people who work for them, can learn a great deal from this terrific book. Indeed, I would suggest, no one should work in the White House or executive branch—or seek to critique what they do—unless they have first read this book and taken its lessons to heart." (Michael Gerhardt, University of North Carolina School of Law)“A considerable achievement. Bruff has brought together in an admirably coherent fashion more than two hundred years of complex presidential activity to consider how presidents have shaped the Constitution’s concrete meaning. Constitutional law scholars will appreciate the book’s thoughtful and nuanced analysis. An even wider readership simply interested in presidential power will value Bruff’s lively writing, clear organization, and provocative insights.” (Martin Flaherty, former law clerk to Justice Byron R. White)“Bruff’s historical approach to explaining how presidents’ interpretations of their constitutional powers have established precedents that form a common law of presidential power is a welcome push in the direction of uniting historians’ interest in change over time with political scientists’ interest in theory building. . . This book is a useful reference for those interested in how the meeting of constitutional text and presidential practice has propelled the development of the presidency.” (Choice 2015-08-13)“A magnificent book . . . [with] immense value. . . . Bruff brings a wealth of knowledge to his subject, and his book makes a valuable contribution to the study of the presidency, constitutional interpretation, and the president as constitutional interpreter. It illustrates that the Constitution belongs to politicians as well as jurists, that constitutional meaning comes from ethical and pragmatic as well as historical argument, and that the creative contributions of presidents have played an important role in the Constitution’s ability to endure through the years.” (Congress and the Presidency 2015-10-29)“Bruff, through a painstaking and thorough analysis of the historical record, contends that presidential interpretation is appropriately constrained by Congress, by public opinion, and by judicial intervention. He concludes that presidents have played, and continue to play, a vital role in the contestation and development of the meaning of the Constitution.”   (Harvard Law Review 2016-05-12)“Untrodden Ground is a must read for those interested in understanding the myriad dynamics that shape presidents’ impact on constitutional interpretation. The author assesses each administration in chronological fashion to shed light on our understanding of the US Constitution. No other book to my knowledge has been so ambitious in assessing each president’s contributions to constitutional interpretation, and few other books are infused with such lively prose.”   (American Historical Review 2016-05-12)

About the Author Harold H. Bruff is the Rosenbaum Professor of Law at the University of Colorado Law School. He is the author, most recently, of Bad Advice: Bush’s Lawyers in the War on Terror.

By Thomas Neely This splendid book by Harold Bruff is fit both for scholars and students, and for the rest of us as well. Read it. You will learn things you didn't know about the early giants, Washington, Jefferson, Jackson, Lincoln; you will meet a Polk who came out swinging and did not have much use for his secretary of state, one James Buchanan (who, as President, wrote a letter to a supreme court justice urging him to join the majority in Dred Scott); you will watch Harry Truman unilaterally escalate our military mission in Korea; and you will learn more about the reasons for Richard Nixon's truncated presidency. The book's subtitle, "How Presidents Interpret the Constitution," is what Mr. Bruff wants to tell us, and he does it admirably in a style that's as strong and graceful as his analysis.
