1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good workout you can do at home. By phoebeanderson Some basic exercises instructions are covered in the book, nothing fancy or complicated. Just simple warm up and work out. This would be a nice guide for beginners who would like to start getting in shape. Hiring a personal trainer would probably give you the best results, however if you have limited time or budget, doing this exercise at home would be a good start.

By Amazon Customer You can see immediately that the book is written by an industry insider. The wealth of knowledge and information from both sides of the deal is impressive. Personally, I am very thorough with everything I do and the checklists you find at the end of every chapter make the process clear and straightforward. I would have loved to see more details about how to actually talk and what to say during the sales process but this may be beyond the scope of the book. Overall, a good and informative read.

It covers so much ground and it is so condensed that sometimes can be a bit heavy and it may take more time than anticipated to finish and to put into practice the actions described. I read quite a few other books on the topic and so far I think it is the most comprehensive for the low price paid. If you want even better value try to get it on Kindle Unlimited (but you have to get membership to the program).

Martians, a reincarnated Irish woman, a dead movie star, an insane anesthetist, and an obsessed U.S. Attorney General ― these disparate characters have something in common. Each was at the center of an incident of mass hysteria, in which frightened, grieving, and otherwise disturbed people abandoned their common sense. This fascinating book by a prominent psychologist explores several intriguing case histories of mass hysteria, from "The Great Disappointment" of 1926, in which thousands of believers dressed in white to await Jesus' return, to UFO sightings and other extraordinary phenomena.Author J. P. Chaplin examines historical incidents of mob mentality, including "The Last Days of Rudolph Valentino," which culminated in a New York City riot of 80,000 mourning fans; "The Secrets of the Nunnery," involving the sack of a Boston convent by an angry crowd in search of children's skulls; "The Martians Invade New Jersey," in which a radio drama was mistaken for a news broadcast; and other remarkable instances of mass delusion.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Interesting events, poorly described By Thomas J. Trebisky This book is right on the threshold of what I am willing to read. The subject is interesting, but the writing style is awful. The author goes out of his way to exaggerate the situations he describes. It would be far better if he would just present the facts and let them carry their own weight. An interesting book if you can tolerate his "yellow journalism" mode of writing.

1932: Berlin newspaper reporter Leo Goldberg joins the New York Post in an exchange program. In the meantime the Nazis take over Germany. They send Leo a letter: “As a Jew, you are no longer acceptable on the staff of a German Newspaper. Heil Hitler.” Leo’s Grandfather Salomon, former head of the now disowned Goldberg bank, tells Leo of gold bars at the confiscated Goldberg villa in Berlin, hidden as bricks in the wine cellar by an ancestor at the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian war in 1870. If Leo can recover them, it will help him to rescue his young wife Paula, captain of the Berlin Scala Girls who has gone into hiding. She has ridiculed a Nazi official who wants her arrested. Against all odds, Leo makes his way back to Berlin. He finds the gold bars – and he finds Paula. She is now the mistress of the high ranking Gestapo man, Otto Ravenbroich. Paula’s father, Professor Isidor Fischer, is to operate the brain tumor of an important Hitler party official. It must not be known that a Jew operates on a Nazi. Ravenbroich blackmails Paula to be his mistress. He promises to give her and her father an exit visa after the successful operation. Leo Goldberg tricks his way back into the family’s villa. As the fake Sondergruppenführer von Bergolt who is responsible only to Hitler himself, Leo declares the premises as the headquarters of the fake Sondergruppe I. He and Paula use the villa to shelter Jews. With the help of the hidden gold and a corrupt US Vice Consul, Paula and Leo take a bus-load of twenty-eight Berlin Jews as a group of American tourists on an adventurous trip across Germany.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A miss... By Jill Meyer Sometimes to understand a book, the reader should know a bit about the author. Pierre Frei, the author of "A Suitcase in Berlin", was born in Berlin and lived through the horrors of the Third Reich and the partition of Berlin. He eventually became a newspaper reporter and after he retired, he wrote an excellent mystery called, "Berlin", which was about the murder of five German women right after the war ended, who were killed by a serial murderer. The protagonists were two policemen - one German and the other an American MP - who investigated the murders, along with the 15 year old son of the German policeman who was in the throes of adolescence. The victims were also given ink as five women who had worked against the Nazi regime - in ways small and large - and were emerging into their post-war lives before they were murdered. I assumed the young son in the story was the young Pierre Frei and his part of the book was a bit slapstick.I mention Pierre Frei and his previous work because I think it is helpful in understanding "A Suitcase in Berlin". This book was set in Berlin in 1938 and is the tale of a German Jewish newspaperman, Leonhard Goldberg, who has moved from Berlin to New York a few years previously. He left behind his wife, Paula, a dancer, who was supposed to join him in New York. She wasn't on the expected boat and he went back to Berlin to try to bring her back. While in Berlin, he ran into a lot of trouble with the authorities and the story slips into rather slapstick mode with Nazi transvestites, a brothel-owner with the proverbial heart-of-gold, wicked Storm Troopers, an American consular official, and other people who aren't as they present themselves. The Goldbergs have had a rather loosey-goosey marriage - well, they have been apart for eight years - but they are happy to see each other. There are also hidden gold bars.Pierre Frei tries to make the story humorous but Nazis rounding up Jews is not inherently amusing. I think he misses the mark in "A Suitcase in Berlin". If you have a choice in reading Pierre Frei's work, I'd go with "Berlin".

Unfortunately, that was not something I was looking for. It did a good job going over what the common core requirements are if the want to know that. I will check out another Spectrum item as I have been happy with them in the past. This just wasn't this item for me this time.

Rather than focusing on the eyes and fingers, this book focuses on the mind. You will learn to develop, and use, your Internal Piano, remove doubts and stop asking questions which hinder your progress, as well as other Adult Learner ego issues. This course is spread out over 10 lessons and goes hand-in-hand with the freely available associated playlist on my YouTube channel @danthecomposer entitled: How to Become a Pianist in Ten Lessons. What must be understood by this title is that, over ten lessons, sure, you will acquire a great deal of knowledge, but you will have mastered your mind in such a way that this knowledge can be applied in a very natural, Purposeful way. Below is the list of chapters contained in the book. Be sure to read one chapter completely and to internalise each idea, along with internal and external practice, before moving on to the next chapter. Free help is available via my YouTube channel or email: danthecomposer@gmail.com Be sure to use a variety of piano resources, but whatever you do, remember that your mind is the holder of all things, your fingers follow your mind, and that you play what you think about... not what you know about. Good luck.

This book has given me a better understanding of chord progressions and song construction By Amazon Customer Although I haven't completed everything in the book, and I am trying to teach myself how to play I am enjoying what is in the book. Along with the authors videos on You Tube I believe I have learned a lot. My mind still doesn't let me visualize much, my little bit of playing (only started this 7 months ago) has improved much from practicing the 12 major scales with both hands at the same time. I have played other instruments, so I already knew how to read music. This book has given me a better understanding of chord progressions and song construction. It also reinforces the positive outlook you need to have to accomplish any goal. I was feeling stuck with the adult piano lesson book because of the repeat of a lot of things I already knew. I am learning to play for my own entertainment and hopefully to be able to put some simple songs together for the background music of any more iOS games that I code. This book might not be for everybody, but I am happy that I bought it.

Ava and Pip, by Carol Weston

From School Library Journal Gr 4–7—Ava is a spirited fifth grader and aspiring writer. Her sister Pip is a painfully shy seventh grader. Ava loves her sister, but gets frustrated with her awkwardness and the amount of parental attention she gets because of it ("I know Pip isn't shy on purpose, but it still gets me mad.") Pip's birthday party is derailed when a popular new girl, Bea, moves to town and hosts a party on the same night. Indignantly, Ava writes a story, "Sting of the Queen Bee." When her story is honored in a library contest, it goes public. Rather than start a mean-girl battle, Bea and Ava are honest with each other about their hurt feelings, and team up to help draw Pip out of her shell. They are so successful that Ava then has to adjust to the shift in family dynamics. The story is told through Ava's diary entries, which bear sign offs such as "Ava the annoying," "Ava, abandoned?," and "Ava amazed." Her writing is filled with palindromes and wordplay. Some of the musings may be more sophisticated than realistic for a fifth grader, but they they are so clever, and her voice is so charming that it's a pleasure to forgive. The relationships between all the girls are tender and realistic while the adults are caring and involved. The story has just enough conflict to keep the pages flying, with the comfortable certainty that it will all work out.—Amelia Jenkins, Juneau Public Library, AK

From Booklist The author of The Diary of Melanie Martin (2001) is back with another diary-style novel about word-loving sisters. Ava and Pip are word nerds, and Ava uses her power with language to write a story for a library contest. However, the inspiration for her story, a girl who seemingly steals all of Pip’s friends at her birthday party, gets her into trouble. Turns out that Ava’s Aesop-like fable isn’t fictional enough to be forgotten by Bea, the story’s main character, or her family. While Ava was just trying to stand up for her shy sister, she ends up learning a big lesson about creative license. Readers will relate to Ava’s situation, doing the wrong thing for the right reasons to protect her sister. But it is how she remedies the situation with Bea’s help that will have readers cheering. Fans of diary-style novels will enjoy this story, and readers who love to play with words will be searching for more palindromes. Grades 4-6. --Tiffany Erickson

Review "Helping others helps you too' is Weston's essential message, and her story ably illustrates the point." - Kirkus"Family dynamics, friendship tangles, and finding one's voice are among the topics Weston deftly juggles in this diary-style series debut... palindromes, similes, and a running emphasis on creative writing will excite readers. " - Publishers Weekly"Readers will relate to Ava's situation, doing the wrong thing for the right reasons to protect her sister. But it is how she remedies the situation with Bea's help that will have readers cheering. Fans of diary-style novels will enjoy this story, and readers who love to play with words will be searching for more palindromes." - Booklist"Ava is a winning protagonist... Helping others helps you too' is Weston's essential message, and her story ably illustrates the point." - Kirkus"Carol Weston is no stranger to the way young people interact with one another. Her insight into how it feels to be shy, how it feels to be ignored by your parents and how to make friends make her characters pop on the page... Ava's voice is so unique, energetic, and poignant; she will stick with readers even after they finish the final page." - KidsReads"You're gonna fall head over heels for the new book "Ava and Pip"." - GirlsLife.com"This book is fun and educational while being realistic too. It portrays schools for what they really are - buildings often filled with kids who like to pick on others - and offers a way to deal with such a thing. It also emphasises how important words are, and how anything written down can be there forever, always ready to rear its positive or negative head. " - Wondrous Reads"This is an excellent book for children to read by themselves or for parents to read along with their children. Teachers and counselors can use the book as a discussion builder on the power of words and of misinterpretation. I give a Y-A-Y for "Ava and Pip"." - Good Reads with Ronna

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Sweet book that's "fun enuf" F-U-N-E-N-U-F (excuse the liberty with spelling!) By Maggie Knapp Outgoing Ava is in 5th grade, and shy Pip is in 7th. When Pip's birthday party is spoiled, Ava sets out to defend her older sister, but ends up misunderstanding the situation and hurting more feelings in the process. In this diary-format book, readers live through the events with precocious Ava as she and ex-enemy Bea help bring Pip "out of her shell."What worked for me: I found the book very funny, and author Carol Weston never talks down to her audience. The lessons about kindness and giving the benefit of the doubt, and making things right when you make a mistake are evident, but not heavy handed. I loved the suggestions Bea had as "assignments" for Pip.What I'm not so sure about: I don't think a principal would have a 5th grader meet with another parent about a problem, without the 5th grader's parent being there for support. I felt kinda sorry for Ava in that situation. The humor that I found so funny might roll past younger readers. Ava seemed unbelievably self aware for a 10 year old.Final thoughts: A great choice for tweens who like to read, or to read aloud or read together or read and discuss. There is lots to think about, and lots to laugh at.About me: I'm a middle school/high school librarianHow I got this book: checked it out from the library

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. And Endearing Story for Tweens! By Believer One of the most endearing and tender children's books I've read in 2014 is "Ava and Pip". Ava Elle Wren is a precocious ten year old who loves the written word and has a talent for writing. Her sister Pip who's two years older is extremely shy and loves to draw and read. When Pip's meagre friends decline her birthday invitations in favour of going to a boy-girl party at Bea Bates house, Ave is furious. Suddenly, instead of a writer's block she's inspired and pens a story that she submits in a contest. What Ava doesn't realize is that appearances can be deceiving, and that trying to help someone you love can have painful consequences.I loved Carol Weston's unique and creative use of the "palindrome," a word, line, sentence, number or verse that's the same forwards as backwards". I chuckled when Ava and her family's game seem to have a ripple effect . And I really enjoyed the shy attraction that develops between Ben Bates and Pip, both who struggle with shyness. Written as a diary each entry is signed by Ava with a descriptive word or phrase attached depicting how she feels. And amid elements of friendship, love, and family so predominate in the plot are wonderful themes like respecting others, liking yourself and others. These are especially captured in the assignments Bea and Ava develop to help Pip overcome her timidity and unsociability. In this story Ava is a rambunctious, honest and fearless grade fiver whose personality contrasts sharply with Pip's. Her thirteen year old sister is smart, hardworking but shy and reclusive. Overprotected by loving parents and a loner at school Pip's sensitive to the taunts of bullies. Bea Bates who knows what it's like to be bullied and who has a introverted brother is outgoing, amiable, encouraging and wise. With Bea's friendship, Ava learns about forgiveness, trust and acceptance. This is a fascinating and entertaining story for tweens which I plan to promote at my library

Perfect middle grade with a connection to middle school as well. I loved the little sister, Ava, feeling neglected and not knowing how to speak up to her parents with a “pay attention to me too” message. The parents felt that she was more self sufficient and they were more concerned with how the older sister, Pip, was doing it was eye opening and touching to read.My favorite part besides the word play, language celebrations, and book love (one of the main character’s families owns a bookstore) was that Ava took it upon herself to help her sister come out of her shell and not be so shy. Ava owning up to her mistakes was also quite brilliantly developed in the book. The growth of every character was quite beautiful. Highly recommended!!Favorite book moments were:“Her moods are contagious– I’m like a sponge for bad feelings.”“Here’s what else I think: you can’t force people to change, but you can help them try.”“Okay,” I said, glad that at least Mr. Ramirez knows I’m not a bad person- I’m just a person who did a bad thing.”

Irish Fairy Tales is a retelling of ten Irish folktales by the Irish author James Stephens. The English illustrator Arthur Rackham provided interior artwork, including numerous black and white illustrations and sixteen color plates. The stories are set in a wooded, Medieval Ireland filled with larger-than-life hunters, warriors, kings, and fairies. Many stories concern the Fianna and their captain, Fionn mac Uail, from the Fenian Cycle of Irish mythology.

Irish Fairy Tales, by James Stephens

About the Author About the Author: "James Stephens (February 9, 1882–December 26, 1950) was an Irish novelist and poet.James Stephens wrote many retellings of Irish fairy tales. His retellings are marked by a rare combination of humor and lyricism (Deirdre, and Irish Fairy Tales are often singled out for praise). He also wrote several books (The Crock of Gold, Etched in Moonlight, Demi-Gods) which are fiction, but loosely based on Irish fairy tales. "The Crock of Gold," in particular, achieved enduring popularity, and was frequently reprinted throughout the author's lifetime.Stephens began his career as a poet under the tutelage of "Æ" (George William Russell); his first book of poems, "Insurrections," was published in 1909. His last book, "Kings and the Moon" (1938), was also a volume of verse. In the 1930's Stephens had some acquaintance with James Joyce, who found that they shared a birth year (and, Joyce mistakenly believed, a birthday). Joyce, who was concerned with his ability to finish what would later become Finnegans Wake, proposed at one point that Stephens assist him, with the authorship credited to JJ & S (James Joyce & Stephens, also a pun for the popular Irish whiskey made by John Jameson & Sons). The plan, however, never came to fruition, as Joyce was able to complete the work on his own. In the last decade of his life, Stephens found a new audience through a series of broadcasts on the BBC." By Monika In this delightful volume, first published in 1892, William Butler Yeats has collected all manner of Irish folklore (mostly short stories, with a few poems) from a wide variety sources. He has divided the works into categories as follows: the "Trooping Fairies" (fairies, changelings, and the "merrow" or mermaids); the "Solitary Fairies" (the lepracaun, the pooka - an animal spirit, and the banshee); "Ghosts"; "Witches & Fairy Doctors"; "T'yeer-na-n-Oge" or "Tir-na-n-Og" (a legendary island said to appear and disappear); "Saints & Priests"; "The Devil"; "Giants"; and "Kings / Queens / Princesses / Earls / Robbers." Yeats introduces each section with background information on the creature the stories in that category will concern. He also includes numerous footnotes of interest, making this book a valuable resource for anyone seeking to learn about the tradition of Irish folklore. While I have given this anthology a five-star rating based on it's value as a source of information on Irish mythology, it would probably be worth only four stars for entertainment value alone. Some of the stories are very short and/or don't have much of a point, and are less interesting. These tend to serve more as testimony to the nature of a particular mythical being rather than being an actual story with a plot and message for the reader. Nevertheless, the book as a whole offers a very comprehensive look at just what defines Irish folk culture. The stories that do have a point sometimes take the form of "how things came to be this way" tales, or provide a moral lesson, etc. Many of the stories are rather dark, as that tends to be the nature of lore from this region, but there are also some lighthearted and cheerful pieces.Despite the book having been compiled more than one hundred years ago, most of the stories are quite easy to read. Yeats makes things even more simple for the reader by making footnotes where old Irish words or phrases are used, giving us their meaning. However, there are a few stories that have been left in a more archaic form, which is distracting and a bit harder to decipher. Take, for example, the following excerpt:". . . the minit he puts his knife into the fish, there was a murtherin' screech, that you'd the life id lave you if you hurd it, and away jumps the throut out av the fryin'-pan into the middle o' the flure; and an the spot where it fell, up riz a lovely lady - the beautifullest crathur that eyes ever seen, dressed in white, and a band o' goold in her hair, and a sthrame o' blood runnin' down her arm" (pg. 46).I should probably make note of the fact, for those whom it might interest, that although the title page says the book is "profusely illustrated," there are actually only a few pictures. I believe only six of the over seventy stories are illustrated, and these with simple (but nice), old-fashioned line drawings in black and white. However this is not really a criticism as I view it, since I like the book for its literary content and wouldn't really care if it had no pictures at all.One of the things I enjoy most about literature is finding connections with other works I've read, and "Irish Fairy & Folk Tales" does not disappoint in this regard. Many of the pieces are derivations of other, more common fairy tales. For instance, "Smallhead and the King's Sons" (Ghosts / pg. 194) incorporates some elements from both "Cinderella" and "Hansel and Gretel," while "The Giant's Stairs" (Giants / pg. 355) has some similarities to the story of "Jack and the Beanstalk." There are more connections like this. On the whole I found this book to be very enjoyable, and also a valuable read from a literary / academic standpoint. I'd certainly recommend it to anyone interesting in the history of Irish culture, the study of fairy tales and folklore, or both.

9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. I loved this book! By G. Messersmith Yeats has long been one of my favorite poets; however, I did not expect his re-telling of Irish Fairy and Folk Tales to be up to his poetry standard. With that said, let me say he does an excellent job re-telling these old stories and if you have any interest whatsoever in fairy tales or Irish Mythology, read this book. "The Trooping Fairies" and "Witches, Fairy Doctors" were 2 of my favorite chapters but overall the whole book is a delight to read. It's an easy read, some stories are funny, some are scary, but most are just entertaining. Also there are some poems mixed in with the stories which add to the story-telling. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Absolutely charming! By Siobhan Olaoghaire Sannes This absolutely charming collection of stories truly represents the best of "fairy" tales in which the fairy folk feature prominantly as well as a number of other folk beasties. WB Yeats has managed to capture all of the humor, fright, and love involved in the fairy world and it is a joy to follow him around in a world he seems to know so well.

“Some of the most inspiring verses ever written.”—Geshe Thupten Jinpa, PhD, founder, Institute for Tibetan ClassicsThe Tibetan saint Tsongkhapa (1357-1419), the founder of the Dalai Lama's tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, was renowned for his vast learning, meditational achievements, influential writings on practice and philosophy, and reform of tantric religious practices. A deeply humble and religious man, he expressed himself in exquisite verse. Here, presented in both the original Tibetan and in English translation, are twenty-one devotional poems by Tsongkhapa. Each verse--dedicated to the Buddha, bodhisattvas, and lamas--illuminates some aspect of the Buddhist path. Gavin Kilty's commentary places each prayer into context, and his careful, artful translations will appeal to anyone with a love of poetry.

Review "These songs are the verbal counterpart to thangka-painting. Gavin Kilty should be thanked for his translations." (Andrew Schelling, Naropa University)"Making poetry out of sutra-like materials is a hugely daunting undertaking. Gavin Kilty has done a monumental job of getting these poems into their present highly readable state." (Mike O'Connor)"Some of the most inspiring verses ever written." (Geshe Thupten Jinpa, PhD, founder, Institute for Tibetan Classics)

About the Author Tsongkhapa Losang Dragpa (1357-1419) is arguably the finest scholar-practitioner produced by the Buddhism of Tibet. Renowned for both his written works and his meditative accomplishments, he founded the Gelug school, which produced the lineage of the Dalai Lamas.Gavin Kilty has been a full-time translator for the Institute of Tibetan Classics since 2001. Before that he lived in Dharamsala, India, for fourteen years, where he spent eight years training in the traditional Geluk monastic curriculum through the medium of class and debate at the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics. He also teaches Tibetan language courses in India, Nepal, and elsewhere, and is a translation reviewer for the organization 84000, Translating the Words of the Buddha.

Review of The Splendor of an Autumn Moon By william Tsongkhapa (1357-1419), the founder of the Gelukpa school of Tibetan Buddhism, is often regarded as the most important Tibetan philosopher. He is known for systematically reinterpreting, synthesizing, and clarifying the significant Buddhist teachings in fourteenth-century Tibet. With the publication of The Splendor of an Autumn Moon: The Devotional Verse of Tsongkhapa, another dimension of this scholar-saint is open to English readers: Tsongkhapa as devotional poet. In these exquisite poems, expressions of heartfelt reverence to buddhas, bodhisattvas, and to his teachers, Tsongkhapa reveals an intimate faith for the teachings and a profound compassion.Gavin Kilty, with three decades of translation work behind him, has done a superb job articulating the literal meaning of these poems, while maintaining Tsongkhapa's poetic spirit. Thus, for those interested in the relationship of devotional poetry to philosophy in Buddhist traditions, and in Tibet specifically, this translation demonstrates how dharma can be taught and expressed with compelling affectivity as well as reason. These verses will also be a great resource for anyone who is herself or himself a Buddhist practitioner, for they are indeed inspiring, and move the reader to a sacred space of receptivity to the dharma, and gratitude for the teachers. These verses invite the reader to participate in the experience of profound compassion and devotion. The historian of Buddhist studies will also find much that is fascinating here, for example in Tsongkhapa's use of metaphor, his treatment of particular Buddhist themes, and indeed the very decision of which themes to treat poetically. Students of Tibetan language will also appreciate Kilty's work, for it provides both the Tibetan text and the translation on opposite pages, making it easy to follow along.

By Nancy I did not know Tsonkhapa wrote devotional verses so this book was a pleasant surprise. In particular I was interested in his description of Namgalma, also known as Goddesa Vijaya.

Amazon.com Review An affectionate, sometimes bashful pig named Wilbur befriends a spider named Charlotte, who lives in the rafters above his pen. A prancing, playful bloke, Wilbur is devastated when he learns of the destiny that befalls all those of porcine persuasion. Determined to save her friend, Charlotte spins a web that reads "Some Pig," convincing the farmer and surrounding community that Wilbur is no ordinary animal and should be saved. In this story of friendship, hardship, and the passing on into time, E.B. White reminds us to open our eyes to the wonder and miracle often found in the simplest of things.

From Publishers Weekly E.B. White's enduring classic celebrates in style with the release of the Charlotte's Web 5oth Anniversary Retrospective Edition. By Erika Sorocco Fern Arable has always been an animal lover. However, she had never saved a pig from an untimely injustice until the day she learned that her father planned on shooting a runt, just because he had been too small. Begging her father for a chance to save the little oinker, Fern wins the battle, and is given the opportunity to raise the wriggling piglet as her own. Promptly named Wilbur, Fern falls in love with her new charge, and can't get him off her mind, even while at school. But as he grows bigger and bigger each day, things begin to change. Soon, Mr. Arable refuses to allow Wilbur to sleep in the house, then her father reprimands her for taking Wilbur for walks in her doll carriage. Soon, Fern is forced to sell little Wilbur to her Uncle Homer, where Wilbur is quickly swept away, and forced to live. Fern doesn't mind the arrangement as long as she can still see her beloved friend. But when she learns that Uncle Homer plans to fatten the little piggy up and then kill him, she's devastated. As is Wilbur. Confiding in the other farm animals, Wilbur begs everyone for their help in saving his life. Sadly, none of the animals seem to know what to do to keep Wilbur from meeting his fate. No one, that is, except for an intelligent spider known as Charlotte. Charlotte lives right above Wilbur in his tiny alcove, where she spends her days and nights weaving beautiful webs. When she decides to help Wilbur by spelling words and phrases such as "Some Pig" and "Terrific" in her webs, the county becomes interested in visiting this amazing pig, leaving Uncle Homer in awe, and giving him the chance to spare little Wilbur's life.CHARLOTTE'S WEB has been one of my absolute favorite stories since I was 6-years-old, which is why this Signature Edition of the tale instantly caught my eye. Yes, it is the same tale that we all know and love from years ago, however, this particular edition features some exclusive content that is absolutely essential for CHARLOTTE'S WEB and E.B. White fans. Aside from the gorgeous, colored illustrations by Garth Williams; and the wonderful large font of the story, this lap-sized edition features an entire Afterword by Peter F. Neumeyer, which features black and white photographs of E.B. White himself, as well as a brief biography about the famed author, pictures of his home, information about his other books - such as STUART LITTLE and THE TRUMPET OF THE SWAN - and even has an exclusive area devoted to the illustrator, Garth Williams. Even more interesting are the illustrations of Zuckerman's Barn - which White modeled after his very own - and the various first drafts and changes to the tale that did not make it into the actual novel. Each and every one of these Afterword pages is an absolute marvelous addition to the tale, and gives the reader an even more in-depth into the man who created an array of lovable, unforgettable characters. Even if you already own a copy of CHARLOTTE'S WEB, the Signature Edition is a must-have item!Erika Sorocco

White's children's classic "Charlotte's Web" that 148 others here (more around the world) have not. But experiencing it twice (having it read to me in fifth grade nearly 30 years ago, and reading it to my daughter recently) has allowed me to greater appreciate the book's meaning and accomplishment. Many children will never experience life on a farm or visit a county fair (the two major book settings). White and his illustrators picture that life sensually and beautifully. The story of Wilbur (pig) and Charlotte's (spider's)friendship, what she does to save him, the toll it takes on her, and her eventual legacy, recalls the unconditional love mothers have for their children. (Fern, the Arables' daughter who saves Wilbur's life at the start, retreats from the storyline as her interest shifts from animals to boys.)All this is told amidst word backgrounds of warm summer days, dank cellars, midways filled with discarded food and paper, cellar barns filled by scents of straw, manure, and slops. (Who but White could've described the leftovers fed to Wilbur and actually make them sound delicious?)White's gift for character also shows most interestingly in the rat Templeton, who many may identify with. Tough, clever, self-serving, defensive, but valiant in the end, he adds much needed sour spike to essential scenes that may have otherwise been too sweet (his negotiation with Wilbur over Charlotte's egg sac is one example) Templeton's self-desciption at book's end of "living for the pleasures of the feast," summarize in a way what makes life and what we do for each other in it worth the trouble. Essential reading for children and adults.

White, belongs to a special class of literature: a children's book which has much to offer to older teen and adult readers. White's wonderful story is superbly complemented by the charming illustrations of Garth Williams. As the story opens, eight year old farm girl Fern Arable stops her father from killing a piglet who has been labeled the runt of the litter. The little pig, whom Fern names Wilbur, becomes one of the central figures in the story. Eventually he will be befriended by Charlotte, the wise and loving spider mentioned in the book's title.White creates a sort of modern animal fable in which his barnyard characters can speak both with each other and with Fern. White's barn is populated with some truly marvelous characters. Special mention should be made of Templeton the rat. Gluttonous, sneaky, often nasty, but curiously sympathetic, Templeton is one of the great anti-heroes in modern literature.Part of this novel's brilliance is the fact that the author makes a heroine out of a spider: a creature that many people probably regard with fear. Unlike a cute piglet or other barnyard creatures, a spider is a creature vastly different from humans. White's Charlotte is a truly remarkable character. White's witty, compassionate prose style is an ideal vehicle for telling the story of Charlotte and her friends."Charlotte's Web" is a masterful blend of whimsy, humor, gentle satire, and life-and-death drama. But above all, it is a powerful story of friendship. Deeply moving and superbly written, this is a book which, I believe, will endure as a treasured classic.
