From the rugged beauty of the Adelaide Hills comes a story of loss, hope and new beginnings

Claire McIntyre has it all: an adoring husband, a bubbly best friend, a chic town house and a high-flying corporate career in the city. But somehow she's forgotten what really makes her happy.

After receiving tragic news, closely followed by the loss of her job, Claire's world is thrown into turmoil. Forced to reevaluate everything that matters to her, she soon finds herself back at the very place she's been running from her whole life—the family property, where reputations are hard won and easily lost, and where fortune is as fickle as the weather.

Here, in the rugged beauty of the Australian Adelaide Hills, Claire starts to rebuild her life with her friends, her father and his beloved racehorses—including a promising young horse called Paycheque. But just as she begins to find happiness, and perhaps even love, fate comes to call. Now Claire must decide whether to do the sensible thing, or risk it all on her newfound passion.

She'd woken early, before dawn, and had managed to doze off again. Now she was surprised to find it was after ten. Anyway, it was Sunday: she'd laze about till lunch-time if she wanted.Even after four months she still found herself aching for Keith's embrace, his sweet musky scent and…Snippets of dreams came back to her. In one they'd showered together and then made love in the lounge, on the plush rug in front of the gas log fire. It had been beautiful: him tender, giving; she responding, clinging to him. She'd woken hot and sweating, despite it being chilly outside, instantly feeling embarrassed at her arousal. But it hadn't been Keith's face at all, had it? No, the face had been blank. Who had it been? She shook her head, trying hard to remember. After a few moments she gave up.In another dream he'd been lying beside her saying he loved her, that it was okay to move on, that it wouldn't mean she loved him any less. 'I know you have needs,' he'd said with a wink, before drifting from her slumbering memory. That had definitely been Keith. His face now came to her clearly: the slightly crooked, cheeky grin; the fringe he insisted on keeping too long to cover the scar above his left eye—apparently the result of a silly, drunken escapade at university. She'd never heard the full story—he'd always managed to sidestep her question with a well-timed hug. Now she'd never know. And she'd never have another of his comforting, bear-like hugs.A tear escaped and her throat caught on the forming lump. She'd give her life for just one more hug with Keith. Would she ever find anything so comfortable again? Did she even want to look?'Oh, Keith,' she whispered. If only she'd shown him more affection and not taken their contentment so much for granted.Claire roughly wiped the tears from her cheeks with the back of her hand, pushed aside her mop of unruly hair and sat up.Claire had a quick shower and stood—towel wrapped around her—studying her reflection in the bathroom mirror. Did her hairstyle make her features appear hard? For years she'd been talking about getting her hair cut like Jennifer Aniston's—chipped into so that it wasn't so full down the back and sides—but had never been brave enough to go through with it. She'd always kept it plain, practical—straight across the bottom and in a ponytail to keep it away from her face. It was the way Keith had liked it. She'd never dyed it, either—always stuck with her natural medium brown shade. Bernadette and her hairdresser had both given up trying to talk her around years ago.Claire held her hair away from her face and turned left and right, examining the effect in the mirror. Did she dare? Keith was no longer there to complain. She let it down again. Bernie was right: short didn't suit her. Anyway, she'd feel too self-conscious. But she could definitely do with less bulk around her face. She dragged her brush through her hair a couple of times and put it into a ponytail. She ran her electric toothbrush around her mouth while roaming the bedroom—pulling up the quilt and straightening the pillows. She had her underwear drawer open, about to pull out socks, knickers and bra, when her toothbrush buzzed, signalling her two minutes was up. She turned it off, stood it on the edge of the vanity beside Keith's and rinsed her mouth. Then she added a thin layer of foundation to her face and neck with her fingers, swept the mascara brush once across each set of lashes, added two layers of deep rose-pink 'Goddess' lipstick, blotted with toilet paper and returned to the bedroom to get dressed.Claire McIntyre was conservative through and through. Her uniform rarely varied: navy or grey skirt suit cut just below the knee for work; jeans or tailored pants and shirt or knit for weekends. Evening wear was a lolly-pink wrap over a little black dress—if size twelve was still considered little. It ended four inches above the knee and showed just the right amount of decolle-tage to straddle the fine line between tarty and prudish. Despite the current trend for bare, bottle-tanned legs and towering stilettos, Claire insisted on sheer, smokycoloured pantyhose and sensible plain black shoes with ample room for her toes.Even her career was conservative. Yes, she'd had different roles, but she'd been with the same company for twelve years when the done thing was to move on every few. But she was happy enough; why go through the stress of looking for something else, just so your CV would show you were progressive? Anyway, there were leave entitlements to think of. Claire wasn't exactly thrilled with her job but enjoyed the security of a regular paycheque. She'd joined the national advertising firm Rockford and Associates as a marketing graduate. Hard work and long hours had seen her move into a senior role in account management. Three years ago she'd been promoted to Client Relationship Manager for one of the firm's largest clients, AHG Recruitment.Since losing Keith, she had been all the more grateful for the familiarity of her open-plan cubicle and routine tasks: a welcome—if mundane—source of stability in her life. But now Claire felt something within her stirring: a strange kind of yearning. But for what? It wasn't Keith. It wasn't a dull sad ache. This was different—more a restlessness. She focussed on her hair again. Knowing her luck, the Aniston look was now as fashionable as the mullet. Maybe her hairdresser had better ideas—could she offer free rein? Claire felt excited at the prospect, even a little empowered. Yes, she'd definitely phone for an appointment.Bernadette was right: if grief was like a brick wall, each step towards recovery was the removal of a brick, then a layer. Eventually she'd be able to step over the top and be free. Then she'd look back at the good times without tears and remember the not-so-good times with detachment. But it took time. The trick was to allow the bricks to come away when the mortar loosened—and not to stop their progress with a slap of concrete.Of course, she wouldn't cut her hair without a second opinion from her best friend. She'd mention it when they next spoke.Claire and Bernie had known each other since Pony Club and primary school. They'd even studied the same course at university and then started their first jobs at the same company—but in different departments. Twelve months in, Bernadette had been fired for rejecting her boss's advances with a swift slap across his face. Claire had considered protesting by leaving with her, but only for a second; she didn't have the courage to quit without the security of another job to go to. Thankfully Bernie had understood. The episode had sent Claire into a spin of worrying about what her friend would do, but Bernadette had seen it as a sign she was ready to pursue her dream: opening a nursery specialising in old-fashioned plants, design and accessories. Apparently the Adelaide Hills area was full of people wanting old English-style gardens—God only knew why with the water restrictions.Regardless, and despite only being in her early twenties, Bernadette had built a successful business on box hedges, white gravel and distressed wrought-iron outdoor furniture.Claire regularly shook her head in wonder and sometimes felt a twinge—but of what she wasn't sure. Not jealousy; she would never wish her friend anything but all the very best. Seeing Bernadette chasing her dream made her wonder about her own choices. Still, Claire was no different to about ninety-five percent of the population.Besides, there was no way she'd want to deal with the public every day. She'd spent a lot of time at the nursery, occasionally even manning the till. One virtue Claire McIntyre did not possess was patience, and tolerance with other people's indecision was in pretty short supply as well. She would have strangled someone by now if she was Bernadette and couldn't believe Bernie hadn't.Bernadette had always been the quintessential redhead. Her uncontrollable curls stood out like a warning, something Claire realised—too late—on the day they met.It was their first Pony Club rally and they were both eleven. Bernie was on a small cranky grey pony, Claire on a larger bay. Claire had accidently got too close to Bernie's pony and it had darted sideways in fright, almost causing Bernie to fall off. Bernie shouted so loudly that Claire's mother heard the commotion. Grace McIntyre stormed across the arena to tell her daughter off. Mortified, Claire turned her tomato-red face—first to the instructor and then to Bernie—and said she was sorry.Bernie had smirked, tossing her head in the air before moving her pony away. Claire decided she didn't like this Bernadette girl very much. But later, Bernie had come up to her at the tap while she was filling her water bucket and said it wasn't fair how much Claire's mother had overreacted. They'd been firm friends ever since.Bernie used to fly off the handle with the slightest provocation. Once she got started, she wouldn't un-clamp her teeth from an argument, even if she knew she was wrong. It was probably the reason she was still single and most definitely why corporate life hadn't been for her. You just couldn't scream at your boss that he was a dickhead one day and ask for a raise the next. And slapping him was a definite no-no.But she had mellowed since finding her 'place in the cosmos', as she called it. Now her fire was being fuelled with passion, and she was a lot calmer.Claire bit her bottom lip. No, when it came to Bernadette, if she was envious, it was of her state of mind. Bernie glowed with contentment and enthusiasm whenever she spoke—and not just about the business. Even late deliveries weren't enough to unsettle her. She'd just shrug and say that they'd turn up when they were ready. According to Bernie, everything would work out in the end. And for her it usually did.For the thousandth time, Claire wondered at the reasoning behind Keith being taken from her, and then dismissed the thoughts as ridiculous. There was no reason. He'd had a tragic accident and she just had to get over it. And what about her father's accident? Why had that happened?Whatever the reasons, nothing could alter the fact that she was having the worst year possible. Things always happened in threes: she and Bernadette had pointed out so many instances before. Since Keith's death and Jack's accident, it had become a taboo subject. Claire wondered what else she was to be faced with. The doctors had assured her Jack's injuries weren't life-threatening—he'd come out of his coma when he was ready. It was just a matter of time. But how much time? It had already been a month.Claire was relieved she hadn't been the one to find Jack crumpled in a silent heap on the ground. Thank goodness neighbours Bill and Daphne Markson had thought to invite him over for an early dinner—luckier still they had thought to drop in on their way back from town instead of phoning. She knew she should spend more time with her father. She had visited a lot in the months after her mother's death five years ago, but gradually the pace of work and social life in the city had engulfed her again. In the past year, she was lucky to see him every three weeks.Until the accident, of course. She was now spending a couple of hours each day after work sitting with him—time she didn't really have to spare. She felt guilty every time she turned up because invariably Bill and Daphne were already there—Bill reading the paper and Daphne knitting. It was a jumper for Jack, made from chunky homespun natural grey lamb's wool.Claire tried to tell herself it was different for them because they were retired, but felt guilty all over again when she remembered that they'd driven nearly forty minutes to be there, not ten as she had. But they didn't have an inbox full of six hundred emails waiting to be read and responded to. Claire had tried to sit and do nothing, but on the third day had given up and started bringing her laptop to make better use of the time. She didn't think you were allowed to use electronic equipment in hospitals, but no one had told her off yet.Claire checked her watch—visiting hours at the hospital were starting soon. She ran down the stairs, grabbed her laptop bag from the kitchen bench and her keys from the bowl on the hall table. Having punched the code into the security system, she deadlocked the door and pulled it shut behind her.

Everything changes when two constables arrive at her home to inform her that Keith died in a car accident. Soon after that tragedy her father Jack is hit in the head by a horse and suffers a stroke. Finally she loses her job.Leaving the big city behind, a grieving Claire returns to her family ranch in Adelaide Hills to take care of her dad. While she helps Jack with his recovery; Claire also heals due to her love for horses bringing her serenity. Specifically she believes untrainable Paycheque has the innate ability to become a racing champion though she also has an offer to go corporate again. This reprint of the 2011 Australian published Paycheque is an engaging second chance at life family drama with much of the fascination coming from a comparison between how shark-infested the corporate and horseracing worlds both are. Although the storyline goes as expected, Return to Adelaide Hills is a pleasant Australian contemporary.Harriet Klausner

Taiwanese and Amoy Hokkien are languages that developed as hybrids of Zhangzhou and Quanzhou dialects both in the City of Xiamen (Amoy) and in Taiwan. Hokkien, along with the related Teochew language, are amongst the most widely spoken Chinese languages overseas along with Standard Mandarin, Cantonese, Hakka, and Shanghainese. There is a limiting belief that Taiwanese and Hokkien are just spoken an not written, and that language can only be passed down orally. Most language learning resources available target Mandarin speakers and some target English speakers. However, many forms of Taiwanese Romanization exist and create confusion and discouragement to people wanting to learn the language. Also most books that discuss phonetics and tones in Taiwanese and Hokkien languages target Mandarin speakers literate in traditional Chinese characters. The Handbook of Romanized Taiwanese & Hokkien is for English speakers and acts as a guide that discusses the phonetic and tone structure of Taiwanese Hokkien vocabulary and five of the most common forms of Taiwanese Romanization. With several Taiwanese language instruction books available, this book covers basics on reading and pronunciation of Taiwanese Romanization regardless of which Romanization is being used. This book does not replace learning Taiwanese through conversations and interactions with people, but is a guide for teachers, parents, and students to enhance their learning of Taiwanese and as a teaching tool to pass down to next generations. This book focuses more on Taiwanese and Amoy Hokkien but provides a basic foundation in phonetics and tones that can be applied to other Hokkien dialects.

Handbook of Romanized Taiwanese & Hokkien, by David L. Chen

About the Author David L. Chen is a Taiwanese American whose family immigrated to United States in the mid-1970's when he was almost two years old. He was exposed to both Taiwanese and Mandarin languages growing up. Growing up in a Taiwanese American community reinforced the importance of cultural identity and language. His first foreign language was Mandarin during the elementary and junior high school years through Saturday Mandarin "Chinese" schools, which became popular in the 1980's and are now mainstream. These classes introduced him to basic Chinese language grammar structure and the importance of written traditional Chinese characters, phonetics, and tones. Learning Standard Mandarin and written Chinese characters provided him language tools that he applied when visiting relatives in Taiwan. He took Japanese language in high school for his foreign language requirement and also applied the tools he learned from the previous Mandarin courses. He obtained a Bachelors of Science in Civil & Environmental Engineering from University of Washington (UW) and later obtained his Masters of Science in Civil & Environmental Engineering from University of California, Irvine (UCI) where he also took some freshman Mandarin courses. He always recognized Taiwanese language as the mother tongue of Taiwanese people, especially communities overseas, and is currently applying his language experiences from learning Mandarin and Japanese to developing Taiwanese language materials for overseas Taiwanese youth. He is currently resides in Southern California.

The comparison of the various systems is invaluable.Problem: the script is miniscule and makes reading tiring for older folks. I had to re-scan parts of the book to enlarge it electronically on my computer screen. To be useful to me, I had to cut and paste various parts to allow better comparison of systems. Viz. all the diacritical marks of the various versions were put into one chart, so I could tell at a glance the differences and similarities. Having scanned the appropriate pages, it was a breeze to cut and paste.I like it when the examples given for the tones were all animal words. As a heuristic, this made memorization easier........I must admit to some native familiarity with those words which helped me get the right tonal rendition for the various system versions of romanizations.Similarly my self-reconfigured comparison charts of Finals and Initials of all the systems allowed me to understand better the systems' characteristics, and easier to identify which system I am encountering when reading texts.Ultimately, one does not need all these when one does in fact become familiar and expert, but by then would one need this book? For the novice, the charts I remade are the ones that would clinch the deal. But Chen has made a good base for anyone willing to plough through it seriously., and I guess actively making those charts meant I did learn in my own way.You still need some native speaker to get all the tones and sandhis correctly.....so a dvd of aural practices would have been nice......

Review "There is enough guidance, connection, and wisdom in this book to keep you acting, thinking and praying for a lifetime! You would be foolish not to take advantage of it. Rory and Adam are trying to do what St. Francis wanted to do 800 years ago. Maybe now we are more prepared and even ready!" --Richard Rohr, O.F.M., Center for Action and Contemplation Albuquerque, New Mexico"Rory McEntee and Adam Bucko, pilgrims of a new monasticism, write with reverence about our collective spiritual inheritance, and in remembrance of the singular Presence that alone fills the soul s longing. Offering a comprehensive introduction to a new monastic movement, including its pathways and transformations, Bucko and McEntee share their map of the journey to Divine awakening, honoring the monk within. This is a book for anyone who seeks the mystical cloister beyond any one form, with a monastic heart open to all creation." --Beverly Lanzetta, PhD, author, Radical Wisdom: A Feminist Mystical TheologyThis book is a divining rod for the crossroads where we find ourselves. For monastic legacies in danger of extinction, for a world that has never needed them more desperately, Bucko and McEntee offer a vision that is old as well as new, rooted as well as cosmopolitan." --Nathan Schneider, author, Thank You, Anarchy: Notes from the Occupy Apocalypse.

The guide book for a new generation of sincere spiritual seekers By Alissa There is an entire generation of young people who are not jaded, cynical, or numbed out on entertainment, yoga bliss, or organic artisanal everything. They are sincere spiritual seekers with high aspirations, a strong sense of social justice, and the determination to live their convictions, despite a world that doesn’t really support them.Adam and Rory have had the patience and the persistence to mine the best of the spiritual traditions that seem to be crumbling. They understand the realities of the younger generation, yet honor the traditions and have sat with the texts, the traditions, and the elders that most young people find to be too boring, stale, or irrelevant to them. They have unearthed modern day gems like Brother Wayne Teasdale, who began pointing the way towards the mystic heart beating under all religions. This is one form of Brother Wayne’s continuation.Realizing that the young are not going to put up with discrimination or exclusion in their spirituality, they bring in the best thinkers and mystics across many spiritual traditions. But they are not just addressing the altar boys and girls; they practice and work with kids living on the streets of New York City — those who have been failed by every institution. They have tuned in to what their hopes and dreams are, what resonates for them, and are using that understanding to build a new spiritual framework that truly works for everyone. As the old institutions comes down, young people are building the scaffolding for new institutions that will truly serve them. This book is an important guide book for that work. What they’re seeing out there:“We have found that many people toay are feeling the same deep calling as the monks of old, a calling of complete commitment to the transformative journey, yet without the urge to act out this calling in the traditional way. They do not find themselves necessarily drawn to a monastery, or to celibacy, or to disengagement and liberation from the world. They instead feel a radical urge to live out this calling in the world - to be embedded in the world, with the hardship of financial realities, the ups an downs of political unrest, the blessings and difficulties or relationships - all in the midst of a contemporary society that does not support such a calling. It adds a level of complexity to the monastic vocation, perhaps many levels. Yet those of use who feel this calling could never do otherwise, for deep in our souls we know that our journey to wholeness lies in bringing the radical profundity and divine, transformative energy of our paths firmly into the world.”

A Provocative Contemplation and Authentic Path for Interspiritual Seekers By Ivan Kruh This is a wonderful book -- bringing together strands that have become a hugely important part of my spiritual path in recent years - the Interspiritual view of Br. Wayne Teasdale, the Integral perspective of Ken Wilber, and the teachings of teachers within all of the "traditional religions" (and outside of any of the traditional religions) who have seen arriving at the 'other shore' as more essential than the boat one uses to navigate the waters. This book provides a model for helping spiritual seekers integrate the deep commitment to a contemplative life of the traditional cloistered monastic and the passionate engagement in social justice of the modern activist. This balancing of inner and outer life has been spoken of within many traditions (e.g., Engaged Buddhism), but the power of this book is in its guidance toward how to do this on a variety of Interspiritual paths that are becoming increasingly common -- including the practitioner who is deeply rooted in one tradition and openly exploring others, the multiple-belonging practitioner (Zen Christians; Hin-Jews, etc.), and the practitioner who belongs to no particular tradition and explores many (the “spiritual but not religious” set). In some ways, the model and methods being proposed here are the antidote to the “supermarket of spiritual superficiality” criticism often levied against these paths. It is possible to develop a path that is true to one’s unique calling but also has deep integrity. In short, anyone who is deeply spiritual but has had trouble finding a home in traditional religious structures will find valuable guidance and advice in this book. The writing can be a bit uneven, at times – but the messages are extremely powerful. The “manifesto” that forms the heart of the book is exquisitely written. Some people embedded in traditional religious paths who do not feel called to open up beyond them may struggle with what is being suggested here (as is reflected in one of the negative reviews here on Amazon). But for others for whom life has offered or even forced integration of multiple perspectives, (depending where you are on your path) the manifesto may just help name and clarify the path you have already been on, attract you to some new ways of thinking about (and practicing) your path, or completely wake you up to a new world of spiritual possibility.

The ideas -- interspirituality, being contemplative AND socially engaged, I-Thou Dialogue -- are well explained, and so important to this world today. I've already recommended it to 5 friends: an Episcopal priest, a Zen Buddhist, a Catholic nun, a world religions teacher, and a Jewish youth worker. They will all love it.

I thought there would be an animal for most of the gujarati letters but it's only a handful of them. It doesn't go in order of the guju alphabet rather is placed randomly. The pictures, much like the cover, are very creatively drawn. Although some of the animals, in my opinion, aren't represented properly. Ex. the tiger looks more like a cat. But the creativity used to make the pictures is great for kids to explore and can inspire them to draw their own versions of these animals.

I ordered this as well as the numbers book. While I wish it was a hardcover or board book, especially for the price, I still think it's very beautifully done. I'm all about finding unique gift items and this series (Bindi Baby) tops my list for my Indian language friends and their young kids!

All organisms and species are transitory, yet life endures. The origin, extinction, and evolution of species―interconnected in the web of life as "eternal ephemera"―are the concern of evolutionary biology. In this riveting work, renowned paleontologist Niles Eldredge follows leading thinkers as they have wrestled for more than two hundred years with the eternal skein of life composed of ephemeral beings, revitalizing evolutionary science with their own, more resilient findings.

Eldredge begins in France with the naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, who in 1801 first framed the overarching question about the emergence of new species. The Italian geologist Giambattista Brocchi followed, bringing in geology and paleontology to expand the question. In 1825, at the University of Edinburgh, Robert Grant and Robert Jameson introduced the astounding ideas formulated by Lamarck and Brocchi to a young medical student named Charles Darwin. Who can doubt that Darwin left for his voyage on the Beagle in 1831 filled with thoughts about these daring new explanations for the "transmutation" of species.

Eldredge revisits Darwin's early insights into evolution in South America and his later synthesis of knowledge into a theory of the origin of species. He then considers the ideas of more recent evolutionary thinkers, such as George Gaylord Simpson, Ernst Mayr, and Theodosius Dobzhansky, as well as the young and brash Niles Eldredge and Steven Jay Gould, who set science afire with their concept of punctuated equilibria. Filled with insights into evolutionary biology and told with a rich affection for the scientific arena, this book celebrates the organic, vital relationship between scientific thinking and its subjects.

Eternal Ephemera: Adaptation and the Origin of Species from the Nineteenth Century Through Punctuated Equilibria and Beyond, by Niles Eldredge

Review

Very cutting edge. The historical insights in this book are original and bring in interesting and important themes in the thinking about species and speciation.

(Donald R. Prothero, author of Evolution: What the Fossils Say and Why it Matters)

In this beautifully written book, Niles Eldredge explores not only how scientific views of the origins of species have changed over the past two hundred years but also why they have changed. It is an enthralling personal view of the history of one of the most difficult problems in evolution, written by a leading paleobiologist whose work has helped mold our understanding of the tempo and mode of the diversification of life. A sheer pleasure to read.

(John N. Thompson, University of California, Santa Cruz)

Niles Eldredge has been one of the most innovative and critical theoretical evolutionary biologists of the past forty years. Now he returns to the roots of modern evolutionary biology to set the stage for new helpful proposals that move evolutionary theory forward. This is required reading for anyone with a serious interest in evolutionary biology.

(Daniel Brooks, University of Toronto)

Paleontological and evolutionary pioneer Niles Eldredge has produced a scientific and scholarly gem of a book. Lucidly written, it covers the history and science of adaptation and the origin of species, with special emphasis placed on how paleontologists helped to build and expand the evolutionary synthesis. Everyone interested in evolution and paleontology will enjoy reading it.

(Bruce S. Lieberman, University of Kansas)

Eternal Ephemera is the most articulate and forceful presentation of the concept and implications of punctuated equilibria, originally formulated by Niles Eldredge and Stephen J. Gould, a concept that has played a major role in the research and development of the theory of evolution over the last four decades. Eldredge's scholarly and bibliographic analysis of the historical precedents, from before Darwin to the present, of the related concepts of taxic versus phyletic evolutionary change is impressive. Eternal Ephemera deserves to be read by every evolutionist.

(Francisco J. Ayala, University of California, Irvine)

Eternal Ephemera offers a brilliantly researched and highly readable context for understanding the development of Darwinian models of evolution. It is a book that should be read by everyone, and perhaps especially those who have questions about evolution.

(Simon Underdown Times Higher Education)

A must-read for armchair biologists!

(Booklist (*Starred Review))

A meticulously researched history of evolutionary theories that will likely be unfamiliar to most readers.

(Science)

A masterful work by one of the most influential paleontologists of the past half century, this is a must read for every serious student of evolutionary biology.

(Choice)

About the Author

Niles Eldredge is a paleontologist formerly on the curatorial staff of the American Museum of Natural History. He developed the theory of punctuated equilibria with Stephen Jay Gould, and his book The Pattern of Evolution offers a comprehensive theory of how environmental change governs the evolutionary process. He is also the author of Life in the Balance: Humanity and the Biodiversity Crisis and The Triumph of Evolution... and the Failure of Creationism and was a coeditor of the journal Evolution: Education and Outreach.

It's not just about evolution, it’s about how the theory of evolution was developed and the battle between continual modification and punctuated equilibria. The book also discusses the interplay between evolutionary biologists, paleontologists and molecular biologists. Author Niles Eldredge included his personal journey in the book as well, particularly when he figuratively and literally followed in Darwin’s footsteps. I recommend this book for anyone interested in evolution. It makes an interesting counterpoint to Richard Dawkins's The Selfish Gene. Eternal Ephemera is more technical, but covers more ground, than Darwin’s Ghosts by Rebecca Stott, although I will say that Stott’s book was more fun to read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. History of the Evolution of Evolutionary Theory By Maxine McLister For most of us outside the scientific community, our understanding of evolution begins and ends with Charles Darwin. But, as paleontologist and evolutionary biologist Niles Eldredge shows us in his well-written, well-documented, and extremely interesting book, Eternal Ephemera, Darwin is only part of the story albeit a very important part. Eldredge takes us through two hundred years of evolutionary theory beginning with French naturalist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck who, in 1801, first began to ponder the question of how new species developed and continues right up to the present including Eldredge's own contributions to the theory on punctuated equilibria which he helped to develop along with Stephen Jay Gould. He provides the reader with a view of not only the ephemeral lives of species but of the evolution of the ideas on evolution. Along with the science and the history, Eldredge makes the story more personal by writing about his own journey following Darwin's footsteps literally through many of the places Darwin visited on the HMS Beagle. Eternal Ephemera provides a highly readable and highly cogent read for anyone who is interested in both the history and the science of evolution written by one of the most important thinkers in the field and I recommend it highly.

Wake up! Know who you are. Open your heart to all the love, harmony, and beauty of your real self.

Find your purpose in life. We all have a purpose that we alone can fulfill, yet many do not know what their purpose is, or if they do know, how to make it become a reality.

When we realize who we are we get a new perspective of ourselves and what we are all about. This growing realization will make a great difference in our lives and the way we live them. When we are small children we learn from the way we are taught, and that is who we think we are, but it is only the false ego that we have begun to create from what we have received and which we believe is our true self. If we are fortunate, we come to realize that we are much more than what we have been taught.

This realization enables the beginning of a new life, one with greater fulfillment, purpose, and meaning. This book is about you, how you think, how you perceive the world, and how you communicate with others.

Let us open our hearts to a new awakening, to the beauty of the magnificent being that dwells within in these temples we call bodies. Let us realize the potential of beautiful souls fashioned by the Creator of all.

“I started reading your book and found it very touching . . .. I recommend The Gift of Forgiveness with its wise counsel from one who has walked her talk.” -Taj Inayat

Decker This very wonderful thin book provides the royal path to forgiveness. It is difficult to determine the degree of conscious and unconscious resentment we all carry around. Someone once said, "Holding resentment is like drinking a cup of poison and waiting for the other person to die." Firozia very courageously shares her fears, pain, and suffering and how she was able to avoid the prison of hatred.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Unorganized and Inaccurate By shoshana feiner This book is okay, but is terribly organized and written in huge blocks of text, making it impossible to figure out what information you need to know. The practice tests at the end are way too hard, but they're also not in the right style - if you want to overstudy and feel very prepared, use Barrons instead. The only reason to purchase this is to use the quizzes at the end of each chapter, which have about 20 questions on each topic and are good, but not different from anything you'd find in any other book. Spend your money on Barrons and Princeton Review books if you want to do well without wasting too much time.

Great resource for the SAT II Biology exam By Amazon Customer As a professional Biology tutor who has tutored over 20 students for the SAT II Biology exam, I highly recommend this book. Yes, it can be dense. Yes, the questions are difficult. However, the book has good explanations for the practice tests in the back of the book. I find the questions to be challenging but fair, and more accurate than the other options available. More importantly, the information presented in the book is more accurate than any of the other books that I have worked with (including Barron's and Princeton Review). There are a couple errors here and there that I have found (for example, one diagram shows human cells as tetraploid after DNA replication which is just wrong), but I have found many more mistakes in other books. The one downside to this book is that I find the diagrams lacking sometimes. Fortunately, Youtube and Wikipedia serve as great supplemental resources in case of any confusion.I have tutored two students to reach 800 and quite a few others to the high 700s - all of my best students have studied this book religiously.

“Three . . . Two . . . One . . . Go!”

Joe shot away from the side of the swimming pool, like a great white shark on the attack. He swam away from the deep end—his arms cutting through the water—pausing just for a second to glance back. “Come on, Matt, what are you waiting for?”

His best friend’s head bobbed up next to him. “What are you waiting for, you mean?” And he hurtled past Joe, kicking water in his face.

Joe spit out a mouthful and raced after him.

“I’m on your tail,” he yelled. He dodged past two old ladies swimming laps, and a couple of smaller kids practicing the breaststroke. But Matt was already halfway down the pool. Joe stuck his face in the water and raced on. He was gaining on Matt now, with just a few yards to go . . .

But then something wobbled out in front of him. Joe collided with a small girl in water wings who was doing the backstroke.

“Be careful over there!” shouted the lifeguard from the other side of the pool.

“Sorry,” muttered Joe. He could see Matt already in the shallow end, laughing and punching the air. He’d won!

Joe groaned and swam over.

“What took you so long?” said Matt, grinning.

“Very funny!” said Joe. He gave a mischievous smile. “Actually, Matt, I forgot to tell you, the race was two pool lengths—not one!”

“What?”

“See ya!” Joe launched into the water and powered back toward the deep end.

“Hey!” Matt began to chase after him, but the swimming ladies were in his way. He dodged them, and then got tangled up with Joe’s dad and Toby, Joe’s little brother, who was practicing underwater turns.

“Sorry, Mr. Edmunds!” Matt called as he splashed past them. But Joe had already reached the other end of the pool. He was hauling himself up onto the side by the time Matt arrived.

“Loser!” Joe smirked.

“That was such a lame trick!” Matt climbed out of the water next to Joe. They sat, watching the swimmers and swinging their feet in the water.

“Hey, guess what?” Matt said. “My cousin’s fish have gone cannibal!”

“What?”

“You know Dan, my older cousin? Well, one of his goldfish has been eaten by another fish.”

“No way!”

“One day it was swimming around in the tank with the others, the next it was gone. Swallowed whole . . .”

“Gross!”

“Dan’s crushed. Fizz—the one that got eaten—was his first goldfish. He’d had him since he was little.”

“What kind of fish are the other ones? Piranhas or something?” asked Joe.

“Nope, there’s one guppy, but apart from that, they’re just goldfish!”

“Killer goldfish!” Joe grinned.

He was just about to slip back into the water when he saw something dart past his toes. “Hey, what was that?”

“Mmm?” said Matt.

Joe scanned the water. “I know it sounds crazy, but I think I just saw a fish . . .”

“Yeah, that sounds crazy!” Matt gave Joe a shove, and he splashed back into the water, pretending to sink like a stone. Then he bounced off the bottom and shot back up, grabbing Matt’s ankles and pulling him into the water, too.

“Race you!” Joe shouted, pushing off and zooming down the pool.

Matt gave chase, but Joe was ahead . . . until Toby decided he wanted to join in.

“Hey, Joe,” he called, paddling over and grabbing his big brother’s arm.

“Watch it!” yelled Joe.

“I win!” Matt called as he hurtled past him.

“Thanks a lot!” Joe glared at his little brother.

Toby bit his lip. “Sorry, I just wanted to play.”

Dad called over to them, “Time to get out now, boys.”

“Five more minutes?” begged Joe.

“You can stay in for two more minutes,” said Dad. “Come on, Toby, shower time.”

“No!” Toby wailed. “That’s not fair!”

“Hey, Matt!” Joe shouted. “One last race?”

“Sure! First one back to the deep end . . .” And he raced off.

But just as Joe was about to swim after him, he spotted something streaking through the water. Then he felt something cold and slimy.

Joe peered down. It was a fish—a slightly green goldfish! And it had suckered itself onto his toe.

“Get off!” Joe yelped, trying to flick it away. But the fish held tight. Joe dunked his head into the water and grabbed his foot with both hands, but just as he went to pull the fish away, it let go.

“Hello, Joe,” it said, a stream of green bubbles popping out of its mouth. “I’ve been looking for you.”

Joe swallowed a mouthful of water in shock. Coughing and spluttering, he bobbed up to the surface. The fish followed, floating next to him.

“Going somewhere?” it said sarcastically.

I want to start by saying she is dyslexic and trying to get her to read anything is a struggle for me. I started her on this book series in hopes that she would enjoy it. I am happy to say that she loves them! In fact as soon as she finishes one she is asking for the next book in the series. Thank you for a wonderful series that draws my child into the magical world of reading!!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This one sucks big time. Worst in the series. By Mrs. B I started reading this series to my 5 year old son. This is the second one we've read so far. He really likes these books, enough so that after reading the 1st one, he used his Christmas money to purchase this one & the next 3.The books are full of action and each chapter ends with a cliff hanger. I like the story line, but as a mother, I wish the main character had a little more patience. The storyline is about a boy that receives an ancient amulet from his explorer uncle. The amulet grants the boy one wish, and he wishes for a pet, but the pet he gets is a gold fish stuck between life & death. The boy needs to help the undead goldfish solve a problem so it can move on to the afterlife. The fish is a pushy jerk & I hate the book. So far this is the worst in the series & I've never been more ready to be done with a book.I like that the boy doesn't get exactly what he wished for, and I like that he is assigned to help the "zombie" pets move on to a happy life after death, I just hate how the kid is constantly putting it off because he didn't get what he wanted. He gets too frustrated too quickly with the undead pets and I worry these books are teaching my child to get angry, instead of taking his time to do something right. But, so far these are the only books my son has been truely interested in, beyond short stories & toddler books. We'll keep reading the series for now (since we own 1-5), I'm being hopeful that the boy in the story learns to be more accepting & patient as he learns to deal with these, not so dead animals.
