A must-read for any DIY enthusiast, homesteader, prepper...anyone really! These days we rely too much on other people and things; it frightens me that I really don't know all that much about survival. I've lived in areas where earthquakes and winter snow storms are not unusual. But did I know what to do when the worst happens? Now I do!

By Neil Gordon Getting a job out of college was a struggle, let alone getting a job that helped me to fulfill my purpose. Had I recognized the potential of a cause-focused career back then, I would never have floated around professionally as I did. I would have just gotten to work.If only...Compassionate Careers provides a series of compelling stories to help the reader recognize the opportunities to be found in cause-driven work and the book even provides a number of helpful ideas in which direction they can go. The resources that help the reader to get started are worth the price of admission alone.But the story about how Bill Clinton learned how to cut carrots? Priceless.

About the Author David Stahel is the author of four previous books on Nazi Germany's war against the Soviet Union. He completed an MA in War Studies at King's College London (2000) and a PhD at the Humboldt University in Berlin (2007). His research focus has concentrated primarily on the German military in World War II. He is a lecturer in European history at the University of New South Wales, Australia. Dr Stahel is currently working on a follow-up book to The Battle for Moscow, looking at the German retreat in the winter of 1941-2.

64 of 72 people found the following review helpful. Interesting, but... By Thomas Reiter Readers of Stahel's other books will know what to expect in this volume... This book is less an account of the military campaign itself (it does not go into much detail about the actual fighting, movement of various units, etc.) than an examination of certain aspects of the campaign which are of primary interest to the author, namely:1) the deplorable condition of German forces as they reached the gates of Moscow;2) the general incompetence of the German generals and military leadership; and3) the complicity of the average German soldier in the atrocities committed by the Germans in Russia.If you're not interested in the three topics described above, I don't recommend that you read this book. The great strength of this book are the extensive excerpts from private German letters and diaries cited by the author--from private soldiers up to the top generals. These excerpts are generally rather interesting and well-chosen, and the author does a good job of using them to support his arguments (although see below). Unfortunately, as in his previous books, the author focuses almost exclusively on German sources.I should also note that the rather extensive parts of the book dealing with atrocities make for grim reading--this is not a light read.A couple of things I didn't like about this book:1) In general, the book is rather "ideological" and the author comes across less as a dispassionate historian than someone with an axe to grind. By this I mean that the author cites an impressive (and to this reader convincing) set of sources to support his arguments, but I found that his commentary often drips with disdain for the Germans--I'd have appreciated a more neutral tone...2) As mentioned above, it is actually rather difficult to follow the military campaign in this book; the author doesn't mention very many specific locations or Soviet units/commanders, so its difficult to track the action (almost all references to the action are tied to German units, ie the "left flank of the 4th Army", etc.) In the author's defense, a battlefield account is obviously not the author's main focus, and he includes 18 maps of the battle which would help with this, but they are unreadable on a kindle... In my view, however, the book would have been even better if it were easier to place the author's arguments within the context of on-going military operations.3) Maybe its my imagination, but the author seems to quote less from various logistics records in this book than in his previous books, and relies almost exclusively on excerpts from personal German letters/diaries, and to a lesser extent, official German unit diaries, etc. While this makes the book more interesting to read, it left me wondering whether a different author could have chosen different letters/diaries, or even different lines from the same letters, to make entirely different arguments...

By Seth I have read all of Stahel’s books on the eastern front (as well as many other) and I these are, without doubt, the best books on the German offensive in the east in 1941. Beyond the battle narrative, what Stahel offers is much needed context for the battle (administrative, economic and ideological). The recent book by Zetterling and Frankson (The Drive on Moscow) is a rehash of many older accounts repeating some of the myths Stahel directly addresses and debunks. Consider also Andrew Nagorski’s 2007 book The Greatest Battle, Robert Forczyk’s Moscow 1941 and the older book by Albert Seaton The Battle for Moscow - all of these cast the battle as an essentially close-run encounter where the Soviets snatch their victory from the jaws of defeat. Stahel shows this was simply not the case. That German operations against Moscow in November 1941 were madness, devoid of any strategic sense. The crisis in German supply, men and material raises the question why the German high command proceeded with the offensive at all and here Stahel provides an answer – it’s what he calls National Socialist military thinking. The explanation of this is itself a whole new take on German operations in WWII and alone worth the price of the book.Highly recommended!

19 of 21 people found the following review helpful. a must-have for those interested in this period By Daniel P. Fradl I am writing this with my audience primarily intended to be Mr. Stahel himself. Mr. Stahel, I wish to express my thanks for this excellent series of books. I have now read all four and found them to be fascinating, well-written, and most of all very informative. Having read a good deal of WW2 military history, I still believed many of the myths that you systematically destroyed through these books, all the way up to believing that some German units had seen the Kremlin glimmering in the distance. I am now glad to see much more clearly the reality of the situation in this war. The statistic that keeps jumping out at me (from the first book), was that the Germans ran out of truck tires just 6 weeks into the war -- that really illustrates up the intractable logistical/production bind they were in if the war didn't end in the first two months. And that bind grew increasingly tight as the war continued through 1941, through the end of this book. Panzer divisions with as few as 7 tanks trying to take Moscow, with massive Russian reserves and defense in depth before they even reached the well-prepared city? I now see clearly it was never going to happen. Greatly looking forward to whatever you publish next!

She has written over fifty books and currently has two Harlequin Presents books out this year.This book explains: how to write emotion and create page turning quality. How to create conflict amidst your characters and why it is a major essential component of your novel. Why dialogue is the lifeblood of your knowledge. How to make dialogue sound realistic. How to make your characters real. How to create the required sharp focus on your hero and heroine. How to develop supporting characters that work. Why flashbacks are important in some stories and how to create them in your novel. Why sensuality is imporant and how to develop sensuality between your hero and heroine. How to pace the development of the romance that is occurring between your hero and heroine. How to write the love scene between your hero and heroine and the importance of 'after'. The importance of the hero and his essential 'vital' vulnerability'. The filter role of the heroine for the reader. The heroine's 21st century response to conflict. How to answer the question 'why?'. How to write the intense black moment and why it is so important. The bible of writing romance By Techie Being an aspiring writer, in the last three years I've read all kinds of "how to" manuals and seen lots of advice about writing in my chosen genre, romance. I collect those tips, and pay attention to every word shared by published successful writers. Having all the essential information together in a single book is a wonderful tool for me. Especially when this book is more than theory, it's a workbook as well.Kate Walker's 12-point Guide to Writing Romance is perfect for writers who are targeting Harlequin Mills and Boon. However, its teachings are great for any romance writer, regardless of which publisher they are planning to submit their work to. The topics covered in it could be applied to any romance novel and sub-genre.The author has a unique way of conveying her experiences and translating them into tools we can actually use and understand. Some of the themes she explains so well, I realized I'd read about them before without having really understood them.The whole book is awesome, and these are my favorite parts: 'Emotional punch' - I love how the author explains what it isn't before describing how to achieve it, and why it's so important. 'Conflict' (my favorite theme in writing, I'm a conflict junkie!) - Kate Walker explains everything about it intelligibly. 'Characters' point of view' - which is a great problem for most new writers, the evil head hopping gets dissected here! I also enjoyed 'Types of heroes and what makes a hero' and how to write a love scene.At the end of every chapter there are questions and exercises. I think some of these could be used again and again, if we ever get stuck with a manuscript. Kate Walker dedicates a chapter to the business part of our trade, giving us great directions on how to submit our writing and inside details on how the publishing industry works. I like and share her opinion on agents.The final part of the book is a contribution from more than twenty generous and successful romance writers, who took the time to share with us their experiences and give us useful advice. My late wife was a teacher for over thirty years mostly in high school. During that time she saw many cases of both hyperactive and non hyperactive ADD in students and often was able to work with parents to help them address these issues. Over the years I assisted her in both studying the issue and exploring options. There is so much misunderstanding of this issue that in this short book I hope to present a case study and some references that will hopefully assist others faced with this issue. Let me make clear, I am not a medical doctor nor otherwise trained to deal with these issues. But I am a parent and grandparent and was the husband of a wonderful and caring teacher whose work in this area I hope to continue. If this small book helps only one person it will have been worth the effort.

Great insight into the world of ADD By PCS123 There are so many people experiencing challenges with everyday life and not realizing or understanding the root cause. Just because someone is hyper, doesn't mean they have ADD and just because someone is reserved doesn't mean they don't have ADD. It's so important to seek a professional evaluation but this book helps to realize subtle signs that help you realize that evaluation maybe necessary.

Every day the church is presented with opportunities to listen to a diversity of voices - those within the church and those outside of it - and in this book Cindy Brandt issues a gentle, but powerful challenge to consider how our practices might be excluding the voices of people and groups we need to pay attention to. I found Outside In to be a breath of fresh air, both in its perspective, but also in the steps Cindy Brandt takes to offer practical suggestions for creating a church that is ready to listen and include. I have already recommended this book to several of my colleagues in ministry, and I commend it to leaders of churches everywhere who are striving to embody the radical hospitality of Jesus in their communities.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Helpful Book. By Shane Joseph Deal I really found "Outside In: Ten Christian Voices We Can't Ignore" to be quite helpful, in so many ways. I really like how it is challenging without being judgmental, an error that a lot of books of this sort fall into, I came away from it feeling challenged, refreshed, and inspired, and not feeling like someone beat me over the head with it. Which is not to say that it is comprised of soft subject matters! It's has some difficult stuff to consider sometimes, especially when we ourselves are the one not allowing a voice to be heard! But the book feels like having a conversation over tea with someone who cares, and that makes a great deal of difference. It's approachable, I like that. It covers a variety of topics, some of which I've seen in friends and family, others which I've felt myself, and some that I'm not personally acquainted with. I really love the emphasis a diverse-unity, I suppose you could call it. How we can learn to embrace each other, not in spite of our differences, but precisely because of them. I love that! I would definitely recommend this book. It is a book that helps, challenges, and also leaves one filled with hope.

The author challenges everyone to practice the Christian ministry of hospitality. Cindy Brandt's understanding of hospitality comes out very clear and alive with her choice of ten modern scenarios that Evangelical Christianity faces nowadays. The narrative is very simple, but be warned. Brandt's questions are deep and thought-provoking. For those who are seeking for a more"theological" reading on Christian hospitality, this book is a good start. One can then continue on to materials that have more Bible and systematic explanation of this virtue. Nonetheless, OUTSIDE IN raises so many theological issues for the Christian church today that I am prepared to endorse Cindy Brandt's work alongside the works of Henri Nouwen, Christine Pohl, and other writers on hospitality. Brandt reminds us to listen well and intentionally create space for those who are outside the church and those who feel excluded by the demands of the Christian gospel.

An excerpt from the book: As we read earlier, the Federalists opposed the War of 1812. In fact, the Federalists secretly supported British soldiers at times and gave them food, money, and other supplies. New England states dominated by the Federalists even refused the federal government’s call for the activation of state militias. All these feelings came to a boiling point at the Hartford Convention in Connecticut. The Hartford Convention was held at the Old State House in Hartford from December 15, 1814 to January 5, 1815. They were called to meet by Harrison Gray Otis who wanted to discuss the defense of the nation and grievances by the federal government. In total, there were 26 delegates comprised of representatives sent from Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and certain counties in Vermont and New Hampshire. During this time, the representatives from New England states secretly met to discuss their objections to the actions of the Jefferson and Madison administration. The Federalists felt wronged by the War of 1812, they completely disagreed with the fight between the United States and Great Britain and found it unfair that New England was paying for most of the war itself. The Embargo Act of 1807 and Macon’s Bill No.2 had both harmed New England’s economy. During their convention, they voted on and came to the consensus on several new amendments meant to curb the power of the current administration. They wanted to prohibit trade sanctions that would last more than 60 days, require a two-thirds Congressional majority vote for the declaration of war, repeal the three-fifths compromise that gave Southern states so much sway, limit future presidents to one term, and finally each new president must come from a different state from the prior president. However, the most outrageous item on agenda of the Hartford Convention was their discussion as to whether to secede from the Union at the time. New England, led by the Federalists, were debating withdrawing from the United States at the Hartford Convention. While they never completely agreed to withdraw, their other amendments were rendered useless and borderline traitorous after the victory of General Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans. A valuable and enjoyable book to prepare for your AP US History Exam By J Blunden If you are taking your AP US History exam this May, then this is a very worthwhile book to read before you do so. The book has been published by Learnerator Education and gives a valuable insight into what to expect when taking the AP US History exam, and the typical topics and questions that you may expect to be asked. It contains a wealth of information on the key events in American history such as The Hartford Convention, the First and Second Great Awakenings and the Wilmot Proviso which you can expect to come up in your exam. It is a great book to read and to use as practice material to ensure that you have covered each of the key events. If you have not covered them all it is not a problem as the book gives information on each of them, as well as the kind of questions you can expect to be asked.The book is broken down into chapters for each of the key events that you can expect to be asked about in the test. Once you see the event that is about to be covered, you will find it worthwhile to write down all that you know about the event before reading on. It is like doing a self assessment. Once you have done this, you can then read on and see how well you have done, and pick up on all the key points that you may have missed.The book is also nicely written and less formal than your typical textbook which makes reading this book all the more enjoyable and revising much less tedious.
