Leraas Robert Service went to Paris in the early twentieth century and lived amongst young writers and artists of other media, many of whom we now consider famous. During this residence he was caught up in the first world war. This book of verses is about that experience. The rhymer is clearly on his game during this period showing his abilities in describing people, situations and landscapes. This volume is most engaging, even enchanting. His deep empathy for the human situation is clear as is his ability to see humor and beauty in everyday things, even at war.Highly recommended.John Leraas

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Sometimes the notes are good as the book! By Amazon Customer Service wrote a large amount of notes and diary-like pages I n Paris. In this book he included such notes, useing fictitious names and editing. I believe they reflect his thoughts with accuracy and they are superb writing as is much of the poetry. He captures the atmosphere of remarkable times and places!

You’re about to discover over one thousand Spanish verbs exemplified in Spanish & English sentences. Learning a new language is never an easy task but it doesn't have to be hard. By learning the one thousand most used verbs in a language you give yourself a fantastic foundation to start building upon to your road to fluency. In my book, 1000 Spanish Verbs in Context, I give you over one thousand of the most common Spanish verbs used today. You are given the verb in Spanish and English with examples of the verb in a sentence, also in Spanish and English. No more confusion about how to use the verb. One thousand words are a perfect number to aim for. It is important to give yourself goals to stay motivated and to keep yourself learning. Imagine if you learnt ten words a day. Five in the morning and five at night. After only a hundred days ( that’s just over 3 months) you would have access to a thousand verbs in your vocabulary. That really is quite a lot and would give you an excellent grasp of the language. Far too many people expect to be speaking a new language far too quickly without putting in the time or effort. As a language teacher I can testify to seeing this too many times. I can also say that by exposing yourself to a new language daily you will surely learn it. It does take time and effort but ten words a day will give you a massive boost. If you prefer a slower pace then you could set yourself different goals. The key to learning new vocabulary is to see it in context, that means in use. Seeing how it’s used will help you remember the word a lot better. It is also important to understand how that word should be used in a sentence. As a FREE bonus I have included the top one hundred most used words in Spanish. Yes, I really want you to learn this beautiful language.

About the Author Alex Forero started language teaching back in 2005 in Latin America. Through this profession his passion and enthusiasm for languages emerged like a flower blooming in spring and the realization that good wholesome teaching & learning material was not always available. He decided to write a series of foreign language study books to fill an urgent gap in the market and satisfy educators the world over. He currently enjoys racking his brains for more English conversation material, a good slap up dinner and surfing travel websites.

11 of 14 people found the following review helpful. Too many errors! By Amazon Customer This book is a very good idea, but it is riddled with errors. Every page contains at least 2-3 errors. I will not speak to the Spanish, as I'm not a native Spanish speaker. It is the English translations that are troublesome. In many cases the wrong tense is used, in others the wrong meaning of the word is used. In still others the translations do not make sense or unnecessary words are inserted or words are left out. This could have been avoided by having a native English speaker proof read the book. Below are a couple of examples:The mother hugs to all her children. Should be, the mother hugs all her children. The baby fell asleep as soon as he go to bed. Should be, the baby fell asleep as soon as he went to bed.The rabbit ahead of the tortoise. Should be, the rabbit is ahead of the tortoise.Elena is thinning because she is on a diet. Should be, Elena is getting (becoming) thin because she is on a diet.Unfortunately these are not all or the worst errors, just examples.Although this book is meant for sentence practice for English speakers, my Spanish speaking friend and I use these types of books to study together. This does not work if you do not understand English. I would respectfully ask the author to have this book carefully proof read by a native English speaker, as most of the errors are common errors made by Spanish speakers of English. I would be more than happy to re-rate the book.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Easily teach yourself Spanish! By Charlie Finn This book is packed with Spanish verbs in context and is a great resource for teaching myself Spanish. I took 3 years of Spanish in high school and wish I would have had a book like this. It would have made learning the language a lot easier. If you are interested in teaching yourself Spanish, I would highly recommend this book.

When some people looking at you while reading , you could feel so pleased. However, instead of other individuals feels you should instil in on your own that you are reading not as a result of that factors. Reading this will certainly give you greater than individuals admire. It will certainly guide to understand greater than the people looking at you. Already, there are many sources to learning, reading a book still ends up being the front runner as a great way.

While many educators acknowledge the challenges of a curriculum shaped by test preparation, implementing meaningful new teaching strategies can be difficult. Active Learning presents an examination of innovative, interactive teaching strategies that were successful in engaging urban students who struggled with classroom learning. Drawing on rich ethnographic data, the book proposes participatory action research as a viable approach to teaching and learning that supports the development of multiple literacies in writing, reading, research and oral communication. As Wright argues, in connecting learning to authentic purposes and real world consequences, participatory action research can serve as a model for meaningful urban school reform.

After an introduction to the history and demographics of the working-class West Coast neighborhood in which the described PAR project took place, the book discusses the "pedagogy of praxis" method and the project’s successful development of student voice, sociopolitical analysis capacities, leadership skills, empowerment and agency. Topics addressed include an analysis and discussion of the youth-driven PAR process, the reactions of student researchers, and the challenges for adults in maintaining youth and adult partnerships. A thought-provoking response to current educational challenges, Active Learning offers both timely implications for educational reform and recommendations to improve school policies and practices.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Very Helpful, but.... By Maya I'm helping my husband with his resume, and as a non-tech person, this book was very easy to understand and follow. The *only* drawback to this book is the lack of a table of contents. This book is about 150 pages, so I had to keep scrolling through dozens of pages to get what I wanted. (i.e: from the resume sample at the very end of the book, to the chapters about parts of a resume, which are in the first third of the book. I have an older Kindle, so I don't know if that's it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Write an impressive resume with this comprehensive guide. By John C. David Resume is a summary of background, qualifications and skills which is being required by most, if not all, employers. Creating resume is one basic thing that one should know when applying for a job. Most people know how it is basically made but only a few knows how to write a good one. With this book, though it was written specifically for IT professionals, I was able to pick great tips and techniques that I can use in the future. To point out a few things, when to use the bullets, which part of the resume can be written in bold, the importance of standard spacing and what specific signs or marks to avoid. I haven't expected I would find some formatting tutorials since this book is for IT professionals, but as a non-IT person, it was truly helpful for me. And that made this book useful not only for IT professionals but also for other people who are in a different field who are looking for ways to make their resume better. This book is great! Written comprehensively, easy-to-understand and extremely informative. Highly recommended!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Great resume tips! By Michael S. One of the things that I liked best about this book was that it was written by someone who has extensive on the job experience. Allan is not someone who is just writing or speaking to hear his head rattle, he is someone who held a position where he hired people and knew what to look for. He outlines the skills that are the most important to have on your resume, and how exactly to write out your work experience. Another thing that was very helpful about this book was that he included a sample resume. This book was very helpful.

Finalist for the 2015 Wishing Shelf Awards. Goodreads Reviews "Broken is graphic, shocking, raw, disturbing, intense, appalling, shameful, and so very, very sad." "This story has the complexity of The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy, but written with the flow of Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson." "Your heart will have been on such an emotional rollercoaster by the end of this book, it may take some time to learn how to beat steady again." "There are a few really great lines/thoughts here. Little treasures I wanted to underline or come back to later. Some really great words." "Hypnotic and addicting." "Heart wrenching." "Raw." When William, a young journalist, seeks out Elizabeth, an acclaimed author, in hopes to write her biography, the recluse grants him twenty-four hours to hear her story. What unfolds are a wide range of traumas that teeter on the edge of macabre and psychological thriller. While toggling the lines of insanity, Elizabeth examines her past filled with neglect, rape, abuse, torture, and pedophilia. The more Elizabeth delves into her psyche, the more William witnesses the multiple mental conditions Elizabeth developed to cope with a life without love, comfort, protection, trust, physical human contact, affection, therapy, or medication. With the use of existentialism, I wrote Broken in an attempt to philosophical determine what I had become and why. Instead, I found the awareness I needed to seek help. Broken is the road map I took to arrive at "Awareness" and seek medical attention.

Broken, by Angela B. Chrysler

About the Author Angela B. Chrysler is a writer, logician, philosopher, and die-hard nerd who studies theology, historical linguistics, music composition, and medieval European history in New York with a dry sense of humor and an unusual sense of sarcasm. Growing up without books, Ms. Chrysler spent her early life reading the encyclopedia for fun. By mid-teens, she gained access to her school library, and began working her way through the Great Books. She spent many an afternoon in an old opera house turned library in the town where she grew up. There, she found her passion for reading and writing through the words of Hugo, Shakespeare, Tennyson, and Poe. She lives in a garden with her family and cats.

As she tells you over and over in her description and author’s notes, it features a lot of topics that will make people very uncomfortable and could even be dangerous for some readers as “trigger” topics for victims of trauma. If you can read it, however, it’s hypnotic in her storytelling. It reads with the ease of literature but with the organic flow of a person’s recollections. It’s raw. When I was younger, my mother told me about what it was like to see Judy Garland sing live; that she was like an exposed nerve on stage. She couldn’t put herself out there without just putting all of herself out there, which had to be the source of her greatest gifts and greatest flaws. Reading Broken was, for me, what I imagined seeing Garland sing was like.It was like opening up pages to a person holding their heart and soul in their hands, bleeding in front of you, and screaming, listen to me and how can you not listen? When someone stands before you like that, it is almost impossible to truly ignore what is right before your eyes. I could barely tear my own away, even through the darkest scenes and the spirit-grinding moments that are described, both with chilling rationality and bleeding passion. Like you put down the book and are almost surprised that your hands are clean. If you can read this book, I don’t think you’ll come out the other side precisely as you were. And it is with great courage that Ms. Chrysler has come to share it. It deserves no less than my best rating. Even though the events and history in the story are not to be celebrated, the author is. 5 Fireballs.

It took me several weeks because I could only handle it in small chunks. The writing is beautiful in the same way an avalanche is beautiful. The result of reading the words is devastating as is the result of an avalanche. When I read about abuse in the newspaper, it churns my stomach, but I can push it away because I don't know the people, and they're far away. In Broken, you enter a world of abuse through the narrator's head. Told in an almost dispassionate voice, the horrific events are made even more horrific by the matter-of-fact way in which the narrator accepts what has happened to her. The way she fails to blame her tormentors and blames herself for what they do to her.To me, it's almost inconceivable that people could treat a child, a young woman, in this way. But it was inconceivable to most people that the tales coming out of Nazi Germany could be true. This book isn't set in a far away place. It's right down the street, or maybe even next door.If you can read Broken and not be moved, if you can read it and not cry, then you need to consider your humanity. In spite of the very dark story, the fact that the book exists is a ringing celebration of hope and redemption.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. it is not an easy book to read By Stanislava Kohut I have so many thoughts and feelings about Broken. First and foremost, it is not an easy book to read. It is very emotional and very dark and I applaud and salute to Angela for her incredible bravery and courage to go down that cobwebbed, dark, scary and rabid hole.Broken is incredible in so many ways, but for me it particularly resonated, because I went through many hard, very personal and very hurtful things and so I felt deep connection with Angela, not just as a reader, but also on a spiritual level that I know people connect after they go through similar experiences.I can't express how brave I think Angela is for publishing Broken. I think it will help people to deal with their emotional baggage and issues. Broken deserves a prime spot on memoir and psychological books charts. And it is not just the book, it is also Angela's writing that sucked me in from the first page. It has a dream quality at times, letting the reader to take a breath between the onslaught of emotions. Broken is not for a squeamish reader, it tackles dark, graphic and very violent topics. And for those reasons alone, writing memoir like that, the writer has to be strong and confident. Angela is exactly that and more, not letting any part of her life unexplored, or unspoken. She tells it all, tells it as it was, without embellishments - good or bad.I believe that Broken is not just a brave book, but an important one for anyone, who went through dark moments in their life, through traumas that they didn't see a way out of. For people, who thought that they were alone with their demons and couldn't escape their claws. And for those, who never went through anything as traumatic as Angela had, it is equally important read, to not just understand how cruel, unfair, brutal and scary life can be. To become more compassionate towards each other, to understand people, who struggle with depression, addiction and abuse. How much energy, time and strength it takes to pull out of that rut and to be willing and wanting to get better, to get healthy and to cry out for help, even though sometimes there is no one to hear that plea.I am very grateful for writers like Angela, who are willing to put all their dirty laundry on the line, to let us see all the bad and the good at the end, to be able to open that very needed discussion about mental problems, abuse, addictions and recovery.

Seven years ago while visiting my cousin, he was checking his blood sugar level, he asked me if I wanted my blood sugar level checked, I said yes thinking there was nothing wrong with me. We all looked at the meter 5-4-3-2-1... Silence in the room then a reading of over 400! I felt like the world had stopped. You see my mother had passed away from complications with diabetes and to my understanding none of my other siblings had it. My cousin said "Do you know you have diabetes?" I said NO... I knew 400 was not good, added to this I had no medical insurance. What was I going to do? This is how my diabetic journey began. Why would God give me such a powerful insight into the world of diabetes? Why not give it to someone who had experience in the medical field... or did He? The definition for revelation is something revealed that has been hidden. Why would anyone hide this information from us all? You guessed it money; the cost for treating diabetes has reached well over 1 billion dollars a year! We are nothing more than a cash cow; they don't want us to be free from diabetes! They want us to be dependent on their medicines... but God wants us dependent on Him. This plan will also help your family and friends who don't suffer with diabetes. My wife who doesn't suffer from diabetes went on the same plan. She no longer suffers from migraine headaches. You see this is not about a symptom it's about a root problem. To find out more about the root problem you must read 7 Days of Healing A Diabetic Revelation from God in its entirety. In this book you will find the plan to start taking back your life and saying NO to high blood sugar levels, high blood pressure and more. Regardless of how long you've been suffering with type 1 or 2 diabetes, in just 7 days you can begin to turn your diabetes around. This book 7 Days of Healing A Diabetic Revelation from God, It's about the journey God took me through, revealing the steps necessary to turn my diabetes around. This book will help you if you choose to follow the plan found in it. This is not about a diet or a new pill found to reverse diabetes. It's a plan which God designed before you were born, to keep your body running in peak performance! Diabetic medication prolongs the process of this deadly disease, causing more damage to your body and therefore, allowing it to become more susceptible to other ailments. Why will this plan work for you? It came from God, not from me. Never in my imagination could I have come up with something as powerful as you will see. Think about it, I was able to lower my blood sugar level by simply eating an apple. How is this possible, considering that a medium apple has almost 19 grams of sugar? You will discover this along with other amazing revelations, when you read the book, 7 Days of Healing A Diabetic Revelation from God. I have also included over 30 of my food intake charts, over 30 fruit and vegetable charts and many more!

It is an easy read and his passion compels you to listen By Amazon Customer The Author’s thought-provoking, humble insight, is undoubtedly interesting enough to consider. In today’s society pharmaceutical companies are continually supplying our physicians with what they feel is the answer to illness, yet the use of them often is a greater risk. Whether or not you have spiritual inclinations, I would not be deterred from looking into his detailed revelation for the natural healing process he recommends. It is an easy read and his passion compels you to listen. I enjoyed it very much, and have recommended it to others.

The Orr and related families (Adams, Campbell, Shirley, Mitchell and more) came largely to Southwest Missouri (though some went to Indiana and Pennsylvania), and many thousands are spread across the U.S. and in Canada and Australia. A more extensive book focused on all descendants (or the 2,400 who could be found) of Paul Orr and Isabelle Boyd. This books hones in on one part of the family and the many families they married into in Southwest Missouri. Thinking of rural counties brings farms to mind, but every town breeds dozens of professions. Orrs have been furniture makers, millers, grocers, insurance agents, undertakers, teachers and, of course, farmers. This book has information on four generations, which takes some branches of the family into the mid-twentieth century. There are also links to useful sites (U.S. and Irish) throughout the book and in the Sources section. At the end are brief discussions on the Cherry, Beck, Toliver, and Wilson families of Lawrence and Jasper Counties. In Ireland, the Orr and related families were in Aghadowey, which is near Coleraine in Londonderry. There are links to some churches there, and to Bann Valley genealogy sites.

William Orr and Jennie Adams: Lawrence and Jasper County Missouri Families, by Elaine L. Orr

From the Author Finding family stories, even ones that are more than one hundred years old, is a lot of fun. I've learned that my great, great Orr grandfather had a fascination with bees (and now his ggg grandson does). For years I saw a photo of my Rooney grandfather (who died in 1931) in overalls, but I was an adult before learning it was taken because it was one of the first times he'd worn them. (And he was about 50.) Two great aunts were the first of "my" Orr women to get college degrees, and they taught many of their nieces and nephews in one-room Missouri school houses. One of those nieces later got a Master's in education and taught hundreds of children in the same town--but long after one-room schoolhouses were gone. I also found my Rooney grandmother's brother was a fireman in Ottumwa (I'd been looking for him for years). Because he lived in the area called Smokey Row, I also knew he met the Irish stereotype for liking to bend his elbow. So, get out from behind the computer and talk to people. It's fun to learn more than what's in the census data. Your parents and grandparents heard a lot of stories. Talk to them before you can't.

About the Author Elaine L. Orr is historian of the Orr Reunion Association of Mount Vernon, Missouri and has published several books, in paper and ebook, about the descendants of this extensive family. Much of her research, on these and other families, is on Ancestry and Find-A-Grave.Elaine is also the Amazon bestselling author of "Trouble on the Doorstep" and other books in the Jolie Gentil cozy mystery series. "Behind the Walls" was a finalist for the 2014 Chanticleer Mystery and Mayhem Awards. Write Better, Faster: How To Triple Your Writing Speed and Write More Every Day (Growth Hacking For Storytellers #1), by Monica Leonelle

Review "Monica does a fantastic job of showing her process and explaining how to transition from outline to beats to full-blown novel. Even though I'd been aware of how beats work, I didn't fully get it until this book, and then went on to churn out a novel in 5 weeks instead of my usual 12 - 18 months."~ Sable Jordan, author of the Kizzie Baldwin thriller series"Even with these hacks and as a pantser (a seat-of-the-pants writer who uses only a minimal outline) -- I'm hitting 2400 words per hour. I've written over 20K words in about eight days, and that with a day or two off."~ Numinous Dreamer, an Amazon reviewer"I've already begun putting some of these ideas into practice, and with very little effort have raised my writing speed dramatically... After a little trial-and-error I'm already averaging at 1,500 words per hour--which is a lot faster than before!"~ Edison T. Crux, author of The Enoc Tales series"Some great tips from Monica, and every writer, no matter where on the journey, can learn something new."~ Joanna Penn, NYT and USA Today bestselling author of thriller under J.F. Penn, author of How To Market a Book and founder of TheCreativePenn.com"One of the best how-to-be-a-writer books I've read in the last year. Worth 10 times the price."~ Kevin Kruse, NY Times bestselling author, Forbes columnist and serial entrepreneur

A Fresh Take on the Writing Process By Kirk Every author looks for ways to not only write better, but to write more, in a shorter amount of time with less stress. But how?Monica Leonelle comes to the rescue, giving you practical, actionable tips on how to write more words in an hour, how to write more hours in a day, and how to make sure those words won't have to be discarded in editing. In the first half of the book, she discusses her tools and methods, including outlining, using beats, the Pomodoro Technique, voice recognition software, and much more. More importantly, she encourages you to closely track your own writing results in order to discover what works for you.In the second half of the book, she presents her two month diary of developing her technique, including her ups and downs and struggles to balance her fiction writing, copywriting, weight loss program, and personal life. It was refreshing to hear from a writer who doesn't present themselves as a super hero, but rather another writer with the same challenges as you. Also included are resources for further study. All in all, a terrific resource with fresh advice you haven't heard a million times before.I am looking forward to the other books in this series as well.

By Book Lovin' Gal I'm impressed by how many books the author has written, but I feel like this book has way too much "re-purposed" content. Giant copy and pastes from her fiction outlines and drafts as examples, but they could have been way shorter. She has also copied and pasted portions of her rambling writer's diary (with the excuse that it's another example).I think this book needed an editor to take out giant chunks of repetitive copy and pasted examples to make it tolerable to read. Although, if you take out the filler, you're left with a less well-written version of Rachel Aaron's 2,000 to 10,000. If you value your time, there are better books on this topic to read.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Write Better, Faster for the Win By Michael La Ronn I loved this book. I already write pretty fast and use many of the same techniques as Monica, so a lot of this was preaching to the choir, but I enjoyed the way Monica presented the topic. I've always avoided spreadsheets for tracking my work, but I started doing it after reading this and it helped tremendously. I think this book has value just as much for full-time authors as it does for part time authors like me.This book is very similar to 2K to 10K by Rachel Aaron, but in many ways, it's an extension of that book because it goes much, much deeper into the topics that Aaron presents in her book. One of my favorite parts of the book was seeing the beats. I always enjoy seeing how other authors outline, since so few people release their pre-production documents. My only criticism was that the Appendix section was huge---maybe too huge for its own good, especially since it was mostly previously published content. Some of it was interesting, but I could have done without it. It also distorted the length of the book a bit. This doesn't take away from the book in any way, though. Just personal preference.Highly recommended.

The Secret Book of Grazia dei Rossi, by Jacqueline Park

Amazon.com Review The "secret book" of the title--or libro segreto, in the old Florentine manner--is the detailed account of Grazia dei Rossi's exciting and turbulent life, written so that her son might know his legacy. Inspired by a letter written centuries ago by a young Jewish woman to Isabella d'Este, The Secret Book of Grazia is a rich and complex work of fiction. This historical novel brings to life the sublime art, political corruption, and religious intolerance of 16th-century Florence from a rarely explored vantage point: the complicated symbiosis between Christian and Jew. Grazia dei Rossi, educated daughter of a wealthy Jewish family, has fallen in love with a young Christian nobleman. Forced to choose between her love and her faith, she chooses love. But her betrothed is whisked away by kinsmen, and the humiliated Grazia is ruined--until fate throws her another chance in the guise of a second marriage proposal, this one from the powerful Judah del Medigo, scholar, physician, and adviser to popes and kings. Under his guardianship, Grazia flourishes as a scholar and scribe, eventually becoming the secretary to Isabella d'Este, where she reenters the world of courts and courtiers.

And that's just the beginning; Park blends scholarship, imagination, and a compelling heroine to serve up good, old-fashioned literary stew, thick with the irresistible details of place, plottings, and passions.

From Library Journal Two letters from the court of Isabella d'Este found in an attic and published in an obscure Italian journal provide the inspiration for this historical novel. Park, a founder of the Dramatic Writing Program at New York University's Institute of Film, brings both considerable writing experience and thorough research to her first novel. Building on the hints of a romance between a Christian nobleman and a young Jewess, Park successfully evokes the tensions underlying the luxuries of 14th-century Italian court life. Her heroine, Grazia Dei Rossi, is the finely educated daughter of a well-to-do Jewish family. Despite their wealth, her family remains on the edges of society and subject to the capricious whims of their court patrons. Bearing witness to family intrigues, religious persecution, and changing political alliances, Grazia pens her memoirs as a legacy for her son. The result deftly mixes romance, historical details, memorable characters, and drama. Recommended for all fiction collections.?Jan Blodgett, Davidson Coll., N.C.Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews The splendor and tumult of the Italian Renaissance live con brio in this page-turning tale of a remarkable young Jewish woman whose love for a Christian nobleman divides her heart and soul. Parks, a professor emerita in the NYU dramatic-writing program, draws upon a brief reference to this young woman in a period history and develops it into a story as rich as Raphael's tapestries--which her Jewish heroine, Grazia, must guard when the Germans sack Rome in 1527. Grazia, her young son Danilo, and her employer Madonna Isabella, the Marchesana of Mantova, are eventually allowed to leave Rome--but at a high price. Grazia's life seems, in fact, to have been shaped by a series of upheavals and flights. Remembering them now, she is taken back to her first flight, in childhood, from Mantova, during a pogrom, when her family takes shelter with her wealthy grandparents, the Rossis. The Rossis are bankers and humanist scholars, and Grazia gains a remarkable education. But while her scholarly talents bring her fame--she publishes a book--and work (she eventually becomes the secretary of the Marchesa, a woman close to the center of power in Renaissance Rome), her life, shaped by war, plague, and persecution, is changed forever by her encounter with the dashing Lord Pirro when he arrives, still a student, at the Rossi bank in search of a loan. The two become lovers but are parted when the reluctant Pirro is compelled to marry his family's choice. These meetings and partings are repeated though the pair's event-filled lives as Pirro becomes a soldier and Grazia marries Judah, who becomes a physician to the Pope. At one unexpected reunion with Pirro, Danilo is conceived. But history is indifferent even to the most intense of lovers, especially in troubled times, and the estimable Grazia will meet an unhappy fate. A genuine Renaissance woman memorably struts her stuff in a first novel that consummately mixes fact and fancy. Historical fiction at its best. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. A skillfully crafted period AND character piece By A Customer It is rare that I develop the fierce attachement to a novel and its characters that I did when reading this novel. The novel skillfully intertwines history with the plot without bogging the reader down in mind-numbing, plot-detracting, detail (almost as if the plot were an excuse for the research the author did). Many historical novels fall into this trap. Park makes Renaissance Italy come alive for the reader. You come away with a sense of actually having been there. This is accomplished by Park's style of skillful description without the using the mystifying authority of a research novelist. The protagonist Grazia is a strong and able woman with all the faults and vulnerabilites of any real woman. Her actions always reflect her emotional development at each point in the story. Hence she allows herself to be seduced by her dashing Christian suitor...at the age of 13...when we are all prone to romantic flights of fancy and passion. What is so amazing is that Park manages to keep her characters REAL and plausable while still keeping them and the plot infused with enough drama and unpredictability to intrigue the reader. An excellent first novel and I eagerly await another.

I didn't expect to be all that into the book, though, because I didn't think I would be interested in a story that took place so long ago. This book proved me very wrong. Not only was captivated by the main character, Grazia, but i also would like to think that I absorbed some of the historical information and learned much about Renaissance Italy and events in that time. The book brought history alive for me in the days that I was reading it. Ms. Park should be thanked for doing such excellent research and presenting us with such a wonderful gift of literature. She writes in a sometimes sarcastic, very informative, and always friendly style and I hope to see some more books on the shelves by her.

Nelson I was under the impression that I was not a big fan of historical fiction.....until I read THE SECRET BOOK OF GRAZIA DEI ROSSI. Who would of thought that the life of a Renissance-era Jewish woman in Italy would be so absorbing! This book went everywhere with me! Granted, life back then was not easy for anyone, but to be Jewish and a woman and told where you will live, what profession you will persue, and who you will marry and STILL live a full life, is an accomplishment beyond comprehension. Grazia is a wonderful character, intelligent, full of fire and passion, my only disappointment is that she was not real. Ms. Park makes her seem so.
