3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. awesome crash course for business plan By Gavin No matter what kind of industry you're in, if you want to start up a business and especially if you need some financial backing, it is imperative that you construct an effective business plan to further in sure you have a proper funding to start up and also to increase the probability of longevity. I realize that having a business plan is not just meant to keep loaners contents, but Sue meticulously consider all the details that might be overlooked if a business plan is not incorporated. May not be the one stop place when coming up with a very detailed plan, however, it covers basically all of the bases necessary. Gus, I think this is a great place to start, before your business is in the works, you can think of this book as a part of the brainstorming process nearing the embodiment of a small business. Quality jewels in here

It has helped me with my business plan for my new business. The explanation of what is needed in an Executive Summary was broken down in a way that make writing one much simpler than it has ever been. This has always been my stumbling block. I was able to write a clear, effective business plan that was direct and straight forward. I look forward to reading more from this author!

I. Madison stresses the need to carefully define a specific niche. He is impressively brilliant in his knowledge of creating a business plan. He's fully aware that most business plans are the same. If one is incorrect, then every other aspect of you business plan will also be wrong for the simple reason that it is built on the wrong foundation. He points out the fallacy of creating a business plan that is based on a product or service offering nobody wants. This is a wonderful way to encourage your child to do some fun and sometimes educational activities in those "I'm bored" times. The 101 activities are very diversified -- from "learn how to use chopsticks" to "paint like a famous artist" to "spin a basketball on your fingetip". Just a wonderful variety with specific instructions. There are sports themed tasks, cooking, physical, mental, artistic, mathematical, and just plain fun. I plan on giving this book to my 9 year old grandson when he visits. Some tasks we will do together, some he can do on his own. It's just a wonderful book and I plan on spreading the word about this to all my parent and grandparent friends. Do your child a favor - buy this today!

By delicateflower152 “101 Things to Do Before You Grow Up” is exactly what you need when your hear the all too familiar refrain “I’m bored, what can I do?” Laura Dower has compiled a group of 101 activities that should provide children/grandchildren with a wide variety of choices that will meet almost any interest they may have. A colorful cardboard jacket covers the spiral-bound pages of the book. The book lies flat when opened.From astronomy – “go stargazing!” to aerodynamics – “launch a plastic-bag parachute”, from historic preservation – “make a time capsule” to developing an unusual skill – “learn to juggle three objects”, from fostering an interest in becoming multi-lingual – “count to ten in five different languages” to science – “tell time without a clock”, and more, this book provides activities for a wide range of ages.Few of the 101 choices require objects or materials not commonly found in the home. Cost for materials is minimal, yet the entertainment value of these activities is great. Clear, step-by-step instructions are easy to follow. Not only do some of the activities have educational aspects – e.g. “learn to read music”, many impart valuable life-skills – e.g. learning to tie three common knots.I liked that there was a list of required materials given when the activity required them. I'm sure if we all sat down we could, over time, come up with a long list of fun things for kids to do in their (ample) spare time. But why do that when this book is already available. It is super cute with a hard cover and a lay-flat wire coil spine. The spine makes it great for keeping the book open as reference when trying something out.The pages are really colorful and illustrated and all of the tasks are in simple and short steps - most of them fitting on one page. Some tasks might take a few hours, other just a minute or two. Perfect for the range of attention span for some days.I really like the check off at the bottom of each page. There is a box for checking off or filling in DONE with a spot for the date completed. Many items can be done solo but many are fun group/family/one-on-one activities.My daughter is excited to get through as much as possible.This is also a great idea for a birthday gift. In fact, I may just get a few to stash in the 'birthday closet'!

Deserves a prominent place on your story craft bookshelf By Monica Leonelle There are a lot of things to love about Libbie Hawker's outlining process, and tons of insights to garner from this book!I first heard of the book on the Self-Publishing Podcast, where Libbie charmed me with her confidence and good-natured attitude. Then it showed up in the Also-Boughts of a book I wrote. I'm already a plotter, but currently working on bulking up my own outlining process and reading TONS of outlining/scriptwriting books, so I had to pick it up. I was not disappointed!Here are some of the insights I gained from this book:- How to put character arc first -My go-to bible for outlining is Story Engineering by Larry Brooks, but he admittedly focuses a lot on plot points. I was trying to figure out how to overlay character arc onto his 4-box story architecture and coming up short. Characterization has always been a struggle for me, so this isn't a huge surprise.Libbie's section on character arc helped connect a lot of the dots for me, and was well worth 10x the price of the book alone. Oddly enough, I have the book she mentions multiple times—The Anatomy of Story by John Truby—and was skim-reading it just before I read this book! BUT I did not pick out the character arc information I needed from that (maybe an argument against skim-reading?). Libbie's focus on character arc was exactly what I needed to make things "click." She explained her version of it simply and concisely. I now want to go back to John Truby's explanation and see if I understand it.- Antagonists and Allies -I had really never heard of an Ally before and this is a key insight that Libbie's book talks about in detail. They way she explains allies is *really* easy to understand. I immediately figured out several of my protagonist's allies in this outline I'm working on. Once you know your allies, a lot of scenes just before the resolution fall into place. Cool stuff!- The Character Flaw -Libbie's character arc revolves around one simple idea—that the character has a deep flaw that determines both the internal and external conflict for the entire book. She provides examples from Lolita and Charlotte's Web to drive this point home—and again, a lot of pieces clicked into place for me.In other books, the character flaw is talked about in vague or wishy-washy terms. It's "inner demons" or "internal conflict," which has historically shed very little insight on characterization for me. No more! I'm confident that my characterization will improve leaps and bounds just by understanding the character flaw and how it plays out in the character arc.- Theme as a filter -Most storytelling books relegate theme to the bottom of the heap, focusing primarily on plot or characterization. Libbie gives theme a prominent place and suggests using it as a filter for what makes it into your book. I again found this extremely helpful in the same way I found the character arc section helpful—I'm trying to map concepts of theme, character, and so on onto the 4-box story architecture. Libbie didn't go into a ton of detail about theme, but no bother—there are other books that explain it in detail. This one idea was easily worth the price of admission alone and again, connected several dots for me.- Plotting multi-protagonist books -Libbie's ideas about plotting for multiple protagonists reaffirmed a lot of what I already sensed but hadn't quite been able to put into practice. She provides easy-to-understand examples from her own work and confirmed that every character needs its own arc plotted. She also confirmed that sometimes your protagonists will be each other's antagonists—and that this is a good thing, helpful in unifying the book rather than telling stories in parallel. All in all, a fantastic discussion on multiple protagonists that most story craft books either completely skip over or only briefly mention.Overall, Libbie has a ton of great insight and lots of NEW ideas about outlining that make this book insanely valuable. That's why I gave it 5 stars.BUT, I would caution that the book belongs on the shelf and isn't a one-stop shop on craft. I say that because, while I think Libbie agrees that writers should read other books on the subject, she makes it really easy to understand and think, "yeah, I got a handle on all of this." She's like one of those fantastic professors in college who makes you feel so smart and makes the material so fun that you decide not to study too hard for the final. Then, you get a 77% and you're like, "What? I thought I understood this!"While Libbie's method is easy-to-understand, I still recommend attempting to map it onto the traditional three-act structure as homework. I did this last night (I used the 4-box structure provided in Story Engineering) and it was not nearly as easy or straightforward as I thought it would be. However, the exercise is a big reason for the connected dots I keep mentioning. There were so many freaking a-ha moments—I was basically in heaven when it all fell into place.In doing that, I also realized I had new questions that I need to explore on my own. For example:- Can an ally be a thing or idea, rather than a person? An antagonist can often be an antagonistic force instead of a person—the person is usually a symbol of the force. I believe the answer to the question is probable "yes."- Should the antagonist be introduced as late as Libbie suggests? Other architectures seem to introduce or at least mention the antagonist earlier. Libbie does point out that the antagonist can be a character who essentially becomes antagonistic at that specific point in the outline… however, I'm still a bit unsure of what would work for me, and need to keep digging for that connective tissue to my personal style.The second thing I recommend as homework is to dig into scene structure a bit more. Libbie has a section on pacing, and while easy to understand, I sense that many writers will benefit from the more formal study of scenes and sequels to see where these simpler explanations come from. I think Randy Ingermanson (the Snowflake Method) has several articles on this topic if you want to get your feet wet.So, I guess this is all my long-winded way of saying that I believe this book is fantastic for both beginners who find most story craft books a bit daunting and confusing (as I did when I first started and still do at times), AND writers with several books under their belts who are focusing on something specific to improve (like theme, or character arc, or pacing).BUT don't skip the fundamentals completely. Do the optional reading Libbie suggests to understand the theory behind many of her insightful conclusions. Some of the books I'm enjoying right now are Story Engineering, The Anatomy of a Story (Libbie's suggested book), and Story by Robert McKee. This text greatly enriches my understanding of these other meatier and more complex story craft books—but I wouldn't consider it a replacement. And based on Libbie's candor within the book, I don't think she intended it to be.

Rider A friend of mine who read this book the same day I did said, "It's so rare to come upon a book that changes your writing process at this point. I wasn't expecting this." I'm quoting her because she said it better first. :) This book changed not only my process but my understanding of a number of aspects of storytelling. I could almost hear the clicks in my head as things that I had kind-of-sort-of-maybe grasped before dropped solidly into place.Typically my outlines, though complete (in that they cover all the way from the beginning to the end), are a good five manuscript drafts away from being a solid-enough story to send to my editor, because my outlines have, up till now, been about what happens in the story ("this, then that, but then, so they"). When I've planned out a story, I've typically put a character in a situation, then worked it all out from there.Take Off Your Pants approaches it from an entirely different direction, and that approach just...literally unlocked "story" for me. I now have three storyline outlines for a current project that are SOLID, and if I do happen to get stuck during the writing of it, I now know how to solve the problem and get the story going again. ~In the first draft.~I don't know that my first drafts will go any faster than they usually do (something Libbie promises in the book), but I can definitely see a time-and-effort savings in subsequent drafts, which I now expect I'll be editing mainly for prose rather than structure and character.This book may have been the best investment I've made for my writing career—at $2.99 it was a complete steal.

Crowl Useful book in terms of making you think more carefully about the construction of your book with two caveats:1. Hawker uses her Pocahontas book as an example but never mentions that the book was already worked out to a great extent before she started doing her outline. By which I mean that when she comes to do the outline it's plain that this book hasn't suddenly popped into her mind, an impression she gives early on when she tells the publisher she can produce her next book in a few weeks.2. I'm not entirely convinced that a main character has to have a flaw in order for them to have an arc. There's a strong school of thought that the main character has to want something greatly, and that during the course of reaching their goal their lives may change; whether they start with a flaw or not is another matter altogether. I think books can be written from both the 'flaw' perspective' and the 'major desire' perspective. And then of course there are extremely bestselling books like the Jack Reacher series (or to go back generations, Bertie Wooster and Jeeves) in which in book after book the main character barely changes at all. Those sorts of books seem to me to be constructed on a different method altogether...but I'm willing to be proved wrong.

Great Book for Teachers and Students By Melissa Reese Etheridge This is an interesting how-to/self-improvement book written to give the reader several tricks, strategies, and mental tools to understand his own metacognition—knowing what one is learning. It is of benefit to those who have a direct need to improve his mental skills (students and business people), those who want to improve his mental skills (retirees who want to stay alert), and those who teach others in any subject.The first three chapters are an introduction to the premise of the book along with some historical background on the notion of a renaissance man and some famous ones in history. The next two chapters deal with self-assessing your own learning style and an overall definition of the art of learning. There are two chapters devoted to stimulating and enhancing your memory with background information on different methods to test and enhance your mental skills. Chapters eight and nine deal with deciding what skills are worthy for your own pursuit of knowledge and how to master the skills and content of your new learning endeavor. The end sums it all up with one chapter on teaching others to use the skills and a summary of the contents of the book.There is one chapter that is devoted to determining your own learning style. This chapter is especially useful for teachers to help students gain their own personal knowledge of metacognition. The chapter goes on to explain the different learning styles, their implications for the learner, and how to use that knowledge to improve yourself.There is also a chapter on how to learn by setting short-term goals: tips and strategies for day-by-day acquisition of information that you want or need to learn. The chapter goes on to give tips on how to conduct personal research to acquire this knowledge and/or skills for the new learning.My takeaway: This book is a benefit for anyone who wants some practical tips, strategies, skills, and tools to make life-long learning more accessible in the modern age. The author’s voice is light-hearted making it not so pedantic or preachy. The chapters are organized logically with subcategories arranged in a way that makes maneuvering throughout the text easy. I bookmarked several sections that I want to go back and puruse at a later date.My verdict: Well worth the cost of the book.

A Handy Guide for the Confused Polymath By Nneka Gunn I am one who believes that life is an unending journey in the pursuit of knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. I have always loved reading and learning, so when I read the opening chapter of the book and is quoted Leonardo da Vinci,“The natural desire of good men is knowledge.”I knew then that I had picked a book that would be perfect for me. Being that I have done so much reading, learning, and traveling in my life, I needed guidance on how to wrangle all of what I have learned into a form that could benefit myself as well as others. This book is chocked full of wisdom and know-how. Tidbits such as changing your thoughts to think in terms of experience instead of money when it comes to choosing a new skill or how the acquisition of knowledge itself garners protection for those wise enough to pursue it. My favorite chapters were: Memory Enhancement and Mental Stimulation. Both providing easy and unique techniques I could use for improvements.This book covers everything a confused renaissance woman such as myself would need including chapters on:Secrets of Great Renaissance Men in History (i.e. Marie Curie and Einstein)Choosing PursuitsNurturing Your TalentsThe Art of LearningMistakes to Avoid like biting off what you don’t have to chew (you’ll have to read the book to understand)Definitely a enjoyable, thorough, and in-depth approach to expanding and stretching myself in other fields while knowing my own limits. Cohesive, Well-Written, and a Joy to Read By donaghy I'll start off by saying that one of the things I like most about this book is how it's organized. This author seems to do a great job of making the book flow very nicely from subject to subject, which is one of the most important aspects of an instructional book. It's cohesive, covers all the bases, and reads very nicely. Not one was I confused or lost; it was just all very straightforward and it was a pleasure to read.The content was just as good. It started each section off with a clever quote which I thought was a nice touch and it always fit well with the subject matter. It was well-written (and being crazy about grammar, I'd know!), which only highlighted the organization of the book. As far as instructional content goes, it includes lots of tips and "hacks" which I actually found useful and insightful.Overall, I'd say it's worth the read. I even got it for free! I very much enjoyed the book and I'm pleased with the series. Nicely done!

Stern A learned and wide-ranging discourse on the social and psychological consequences of abuse of power, placing the phenomenon of school shootings and teen suicides in a broader setting that emphasizes the feeling of shame that can emerge from being bullied. The author draws on literature, history, and academic studies to develop his arguments, and caps the discussion with a plea to replace retributive justice with processes that aim at reconciliation between aggressor and victim.

By Bill Anderson Length: 42 pages.For someone curious as to wher Amazon Prime is a good deal, I recommend you first subscribe to Kindle Unlimited, then borrow this booklet for free. Why?Well, it is well-written, well-edited and thorough. But, at a price of $3.99, it is not a good bargain in my opinion.Your other option is to wait for it to be offered as a free download. But, if you're impatient and just have to read it now, okay. It is a good booklet. Just a tad speedy.

Not worth the price By njreviewer I know this isn't super pricey, but it doesn't give much more information than already exists on Amazon's web help pages. It has a lot of history of Prime's development, but only the basics for each department . It is fairly well organized, but other Prime books explain more for less. I hope I will be able to return it and get my $ back.

Soaking foor substantially reduces antinutrients By Marcos Goodson I gave this book 5 stars because it is very well written with a ton of research and referenced tagged to the book. The topic itself is a little over the top for me. I eat fairly healthy but I am not a zealot. If you are an organic healthy food zealot - you will absolutely love this book. Now don't get me wrong - it was an interesting read, and I actually learned quite a bit about anti-nutrrients and the damage that they can cause health wise and to eliminate a high percentage of these anti-nutrients it is important to put these foods through the soaking process that he defines. He has convinced me that everything he talks about is fact, no one can convince me to follow all these procedures just to eat. So I will continue to eat as healthy as I can. I do not see myself ever becoming a health food zealot, but whether you are a health food zealot of not the book is chock full of critical info that you can apply to your life in less degree

About the Author David Brown practices law in the Monterey, California area, where he has represented both landlords and tenants in hundreds of court cases -- most of which he felt could have been avoided if both sides were more fully informed about landlord/tenant law. Brown, a graduate of Stanford University and the University of Santa Clara Law School, also teaches law at the Monterey College of Law and is the author of Fight Your Ticket in California, Beat Your Ticket and others.Ralph Warner, a pioneer of the do-it-yourself law movement, founded Nolo with Ed Sherman in 1971. He began publishing do-it-yourself law books after numerous publishers rejected them.
