There Is No Right Way to Meditate: And Other Lessons, by Yumi Sakugawa

Review "Here's the perfect guide for those sort of type-A, overachieving, shoot-themselves-in-their-own-foot sort of people (who, me??!!). Yumi Sakugawa [is] my favorite imaginative messenger of simple clarity in the midst of all-out chaos! Yes, listen to guru Sakugawa...it really can be that simple. As you take in Sakugawa's reassuring text, her fluid, humorous, resonating, off-the-wall illustrations will gently lead you to next steps, whether guided by turning the page, or moving on to your own next thought." --Smithsonian BookDragon blog "Take it from an artist: There is no right way to meditate. Sakugawa is not just a writer or an illustrator. She's an advocate for millennial-age understandings of love, hope and fulfillment.... She uses her equally inspirational and wistful language to guide readers through de-cluttering, being a better listener and solidifying friendships--generic advice not included. There's no right way to meditate, she confesses up front. And, actually, that's all a lot of us need to hear." --Huffington Post Arts "Yumi Sakugawa...provides a highly accessible, and quite invigorating, look at a peaceful world full of peaceful people. Yumi maintains a lighthearted tone throughout with her prose and whimsical artwork. There's such a genuine expression of joy and reassurance here that you'll find it irresistible. No right nor wrong. No irony. Just a goal of self-love." --Comics Grinder "There are times when you can benefit from real, science-based strategies for fighting off negative thoughts. Other times, you simply need a dash of whimsical, imaginative solutions, like these quirky yet poignant ink drawings. We guarantee that Sakugawa's playful illustrations alone are enough to give you an instant mood lift." --Happify "This book...really changed the way I look at meditation altogether. An incredibly beautiful and easy to digest book.... Sakugawa brings home the fact that meditation is whatever you want it to be. It's not about HOW you choose to meditate, it's that you do it at all. It's funny, it's fun, it's cute, and it's exactly the sort of book that I think EVERYONE--whether you're a meditation believer or not--should have on their shelf." --The Tipsy Writer "This comic proves you have no excuse not to meditate. You can do it anywhere, any time." --Buzzfeed "Though Sakugawa's comics can easily be broken down into basic building blocks, they have a sincere complexity to them. There Is No Right Way to Meditate: And Other Lessons...utilizes tasteful watercolors to offer advice on everyday banalities, such as getting rid of bad moods, or larger-view goals, such as making intentions come true. Sakugawa details these lessons with epic statements that stir up deeply cosmic emotions as well as through the use of outlandish humor--but all ideas are connected by simple visual frameworks." --Redefine Magazine

Do not be fooled by the visual illustrations of the book or how thin it is, because it is chock full of the needed advice to practice and believe that you can find mindful meditation in your life.Sometimes, books come along and spend a lot of time explaining what we need to learn, but not helping with advice or just straight forward answers. As it is obvious with the title, Yumi Sakugawa is not going to tell you the right way to meditate, but will share so much about how to be more mindful to find meditation in yourself. From the opening line of the book where Yumi shares:"When I was 23 years old and depressed out of my mind, I had the life-changing epiphany that I am not my thoughts - but rather the space in between my thoughts. What a profound relief it was to discover for the first time ever in my life that all my anxious, neurotic, self-loathing thoughts about myself could simply drift past me, formless and inconsequential as clouds moving across the sky. Making comics about meditation and mindfulness is my own practice, to visually articulate for myself and for others what it means to embody the emptiness and inner silence that create opening for your true essence to shine through."I had to wonder, was Yumi in my mind? Yes, I had my bout with self-loathing at 43, but the rest was spot on. As an avid comic reader as well, I love how Yumi used her own talents to find a way to be mindful and share that with me. It is quite a powerful book with many compelling mindfulness methods, tips, and just knowledge. It is not a book you pick up and just read, but one you go back to time and again to remember that you are not your thoughts and that, through your own form of meditation, you can find your own inner peace.I can't be more grateful for getting and sharing this book with others. It is truly magical in the simple way it takes the complicated practice of meditation and mindfulness and turns it into a visual experience to learn from. What a truly original way to share such powerful information in a small and thoughtful package.

There Is No Right Way To Meditate (And Other Lessons) by Yumi Sakugawa is not only an incredibly beautiful and easy to digest book, it really urges you to take a step back and reevaluate your own views on what it means to meditate. Although I too once thought that meditation was a rigid practice that may or may not work for me, Sakugawa brings home the fact that meditation is whatever you want it to be. It’s not about HOW you choose to meditate, it’s that you do it at all. That you look inward in order to be your best self.Am I a sucker for picture books? Yes. Absolutely. But I’m also a sucker for books that are beautifully illustrated and pack an even greater message. It’s also surprisingly relaxing to just look at – the illustrations are calming in a way that’s difficult to describe. (Trust me, you’ll understand when you flip through it yourself.)Although a book is never going to cure those worries and woes of daily life, this book is the closest that I have found to one that puts things into a more realistic perspective. It’s funny, it’s fun, it’s cute, and it’s exactly the sort of book that I think EVERYONE – whether you’re a meditation believer or not – should have on their shelf.Even though I was sent There Is No Right Way To Meditate in exchange for an honest review, I could never give it enough praise. I’ve read through it countless times before deciding exactly how I wanted to sing it’s praise. But the truth is, no matter how many great things I say, it will never be enough to convey how much I love this book.I will likely be gifting this to everyone I know this year as it’s the PERFECT stocking stuffer and sends the perfect message to those you love.*I was provided with a free copy of this book in order to conduct this review, but I cannot sing it's praises enough.*
