Great companion to the College Board book By Joseph If you are planning on taking the current version of the SAT (i.e., before Spring 2016), Kaplan's book, DVD and online resources offer a decent program of self-study. IMHO, this is best used together with the classic College Board "blue book", which has actual SATs. Together, they are a very effective combination.Why get the Blue Book as well? Kaplan's materials have model tests that are very close to the real thing, but the Blue Book has ten tests, including three actual SATs. IMHO, there's no substitute for taking real tests under test conditions. First, the single best thing you can do for yourself is get used to the timing, pressure, and question formats that you are going to see when you take the real thing. Second, taking tests and looking over your mistakes will help you start thinking like an SAT exam writer, and will show you where you can profitably spend your time.One you know your weak spots, that's where Kaplan comes in. If you're good at self-directed study, either of the Kaplan SAT study guides will do a solid job outlining tips, strategies, and teaching you some basic info. (The College Board book does have a lot of info on the tests and is well worth reading, but I think Kaplan's tips and strategies add a lot). Kaplan's web resource has a syllabus that helps in planning, but ultimately, it's got to be you - set a schedule that takes you through the Kaplan book relatively quickly, then the more tests you take, the better.Both this version and Kaplan's "Premier" version come with a strategy guide, a DVD explaining those same strategies on video, four written tests, and the ability to use Kaplan's on-line syllabus and testing, including one full on-line practice test. In my opinion, that's what you need, especially if you also have the College Board official book.This Premier version also comes with an additional 3 on-line tests and supposedly includes the ability to use what Kaplan calls a "mobile" app. The link to the mobile app doesn't currently work, so I can't tell you whether it's good. Some of the descriptions make it sound like an e-book version of the paper book, and some make it sound like an independent app. I'll update if we ever get to it, but at this point, unless you're very optimistic, I'd save a few dollars and get this version instead.
5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Great but almost obsolete. By Fuzzbean This book (to not even mention the included DVD) is a lot of material to digest. The practice tests and practical advice on strategy certainly will be extremely helpful to the serious student... provided he or she is old enough to be taking the SAT before whole test is changed early next year. Our older daughter might be able to benefit from this book, but our next in line (who is now a freshman in high school) is going to miss the boat as far as this book is concerned.

By AuntieRita I bought this for my nephew who is a senior in high school and was re-taking the SAT in October. This is the last test, I believe, for which this book would be the appropriate version however as I understand they are changing the SAT going forward. Whether or not this book is still relevant to the new SAT I cannot tell you. However, I can say that using this plus another prep book I bought for him, my darling nephew increased his SAT score from 2030 to 2250. 760 math and 760 and 730 on the other two sections. So, it worked for him.
