Wilderness therapy for “wayward teens” has been in existence, in some form, for over a hundred and thirty years but until now, no comprehensive history existed of the many influences that shaped its evolution. Following up on his doctoral dissertation, Will White looks back and constructs a thorough history from 1860-1988, opening Stories from the Field with the 19th century character camps of New England and progressing over the decades, with the invitation to young women and eventually, adolescents in need of therapeutic help. Will first assimilates the emergent influences of the prevailing social theory, regarding the hazards of leisure in the burgeoning upper class of America, the iconography of outdoor adventures and a few philanthropic visionaries. In this way, Stories from the Field expands the staid history of dates and names, breathing life into the characters and context of old. Will condenses the disparate trends of a century of experimentation into a cogent framework of what is now loosely called “wilderness therapy”. Atop this rich chronicle of the previously unsung originators, Will then invited recent game-changers to add to the communal story, providing their enhancements and visions to the account of the continuously evolving treatment model of “outdoor behavioral healthcare.” The other pages hold contemporary Stories from the Field, providing narrative accounts from founders and/or leaders of wilderness therapy organizations developed since 1988 and which provide treatment for families today. These authors have contributed their company stories to help illuminate the diversity and intentions of the present field, confirm the validity and attention that supports the work, and knowing full-well that this inspires tomorrow’s innovators to climb higher and doing even better work for the families we serve.

Review "The evolution of the field of wilderness therapy although naturally evolving is quite complicated. Dr. White's book has been able to capture both the complex and dynamic nature of the field by providing a strong historical context of its evolution while also integrating personal narratives which engage the reader intimately in the field's growth. This is an important story to be told and this books tells it fluidly." Anita R. Tucker, LICSW, PhD, Associate Professor of Social Work at the University of New Hampshire; Associate Director, The OBH Center; Co- Coordinator, UNH's Dual Masters Program in Social Work and Outdoor Education. Will White has done a masterful job of weaving the various historical strands of wilderness therapy into a cohesive narrative that tells a powerful story. A story of adventure, healing, risk taking, long hikes, hard conversations, big hugs, tears and a unwavering belief in the power of nature and community to bring about lasting change for those in need. As an educator, I have been waiting years for a comprehensive volume that accurately and objectively captures the evolution of wilderness therapy as it is practiced today to use with my students in Outdoor Recreation, Camp Management, Outdoor Leadership, and other related fields. Stories from the Field: A History of Wilderness Therapy is that book. Keith Russell, PhD, Professor and Chair, Department of Health and Human Development, Western Washington University.“This book provides the most complete history of wilderness therapy to date. It helps us to understand where the field should go because we now better understand where we have been. Well-written and thorough, the book provides a critical piece in the wilderness therapy literature. Everyone in the wilderness field should read this book!” Joanna Bettmann Schaefer, Ph.D, LCSW MSW Director, Associate Professor University of Utah College of Social Work

By Lee Gillis Dr Will White is a friend and colleague - with that said up front I want to note that Will has painstakingly attempted to "get it right" when documenting the history of wilderness therapy in the front half of the book and shining the spotlight on many of the excellent programs in wilderness therapy AKA Outdoor Behavioral Healthcare. He has pulled no punches in presenting the history and has been able to show how the field has grown from reflection on practice - even the practice of some misguided and unprofessional practitioners in the 1990s who contributed to black eyes and misperceptions of this powerful modality of clinical treatment. Wilderness therapy is effective. It works so well especially with those who are treatment resistant. Will White has captured the history of how the field is where it is today by honoring those who helped make it so and featuring those who carry on. And the proceeds go to supporting continued research!

Fishburn [Full disclosure: I am an Outdoor Behavioral Health professional. Though I have not spent my career in this field, I am familiar with many of the individuals and programs mentioned throughout this book. I do not recall, however, having met the author.]Will White’s Stories From the Field is a wonderful addition to the annals of wilderness therapy. It is likely to resonate more with those who work in the field, but would also be essential reading for academic study, and fascinating read for those only barely familiar with it. The first third of the book is an extensive history; the remainder is a collection of program histories written by those who work for them. The history portion is exhaustive. White presents a balanced view, telling stories that represent the good, the bad and the ugly of a topic that spans over a century across continents. His research appears to have been quite exhaustive. Replete with dates and names, the book could have been a dry read. But White includes stories and quotes that bring everything to life. The narratives written from programs’ perspectives had the potential to be a collection of marketing pitches. While there were a couple of occasions where individuals were lionized, and a little too much gloss was applied to a program’s description, what dominates is further elaboration on White’s chronicles. More often than not, the contributors communicate tremendous pride and passion in what they do.Highly recommended.

Well written account of the Industry for those who know or are curious By Amazon Customer White's book is a well researched and well written account of the arc of the use of the outdoors for mental and behavioral health treatment. From the foundations of the Camping Movement in the 19th Century to first hand accounts of the Wilderness Survival and Wilderness Treatment programs of 1990's to the Behavioral Health models of today, _Stories from the Field_ covers a significant amount of ground with an honest accounting of the strengths and failings of Wilderness Therapy programs over time. The chapters read much like a who's who of the business but there is little self indulgence by it's many contributors. The outdoors is a place to help people become better. Will White's book does a great job of describing how and why this is the case. An excellent read for anyone interested in the field or for anyone considering the outdoors as a place to heal. This reviewer received a copy of this book in return for the review.
