Roughly thirteen thousand years ago, Clovis hunters cached more than fifty projectile points, preforms, and knives at the toe of a gentle slope near present-day Elgin, Bastrop County, in central Texas. Over the next millennia, deposition buried the cache several meters below the surface. The entombed artifacts lay undisturbed until 2003. A circuitous path brought thirteen of the original thirty-seven Clovis bifaces and points through many hands before reaching the attention of Michael Waters at Texas A&M University. At the site of the original cache, Waters and coauthor Thomas A. Jennings conducted excavations, studied the geology, and dated the geological layers to reconstruct how the cache was buried. This book provides a well-illustrated, thoroughly analyzed description and discussion of the Hogeye Clovis cache, the projectile points and other artifacts from later occupations, and the geological context of the site, which has yielded evidence of multiple Paleoindian, Archaic, and Late Prehistoric occupations. The cache of tools and weapons at Hogeye, when combined with other sites, allows us to envision a snapshot of life at the end of the last Ice Age.

Review "Waters and Jennings provide a valuable contribution to the study of Clovis archaeology, lithic technology, and individual cache assemblages. Their work stands as an excellent model for reporting these relatively rare finds. If only all Clovis caches were investigated and reported in this level of detail."--David Kilby, Eastern New Mexico University (David Kilby 2012-09-26)"Lithics analysts will value this book as a how-to manual for the Clovis flintknapper." -- Mammoth Trumpet (Mammoth Trumpet 2015-06-12)"This is an excellent book on Clovis. The book is extremely well edited, and the numerous figures and illustrations add immeasurably to its success as an overview of the Clovis period."-- Choice (Choice 2015-06-12)"This heavily illustrated book has beautiful pictures and sketches of the Clovis points and bifaces. It is a must for anyone interested in the study of Early Man and his Clovis points, and will be well received by the archaeological community." —The Chesopiean (Rodney M. Peck The Chesopiean)“A seminal work of truly impressive scholarship, richly illustrated, documents, and extraordinary in organization and presentation, The Hogeye Clovis Cache is an essential, critically important, highly recommended addition to professional and academic library American Archaeology reference collections and supplemental studies lists.”—Midwest Book Review (Midwest Book Review 2015-07-20)

This is a beautiful book with fantastic pictures. I would not say that there is anything earth shattering about Clovis People in this book, but there is a lot of good information on the artifacts and the discovery of this site.It is unfortunate that the original finders of this site did not have the good sense or wherewithal to contact a university or museum before they destroyed much of this site through sand mining. One of the operators of the sand mine said that he had collected over 1500 projectile points off the site and the conveyor belts of the sand mining equipment. This operator figured he only had 20 per cent of what was taken from this potentially earth shattering archaeological site. It is a shame that probably thousands of artifacts and the site itself were destroyedNo one even knew about this site until one of the collectors decided to sell his portion of the Clovis cache.Back to the book. Great book, two thumbs up!

Beautiful photos and drawings By Rough Customer This book has really nice large color photographs and pen and ink drawings of each biface in the cache. This book is an excellent companion book to the book "The Fenn Cache" by Frison and Bradley. The photos and drawings in this book are not as large and nice and easy to understand as the Fenn Cache book but still they are okay. Also the bifaces in this cache are not as impressive as the ones in the Fenn cache either in stone or style. Being as how the location of the Hogeye cache is not far south of the Wilson Leonard site, it is firmly in central Texas and in the location of many extremely old early man sites, close to Gault and Wilson Leonard. The book is hard cover but without a dust cover if it matters to you. The excellent photos and accompanying line drawings of the bifaces help one see the use and importance of overshot flaking and basal thinning.(figure 25 and 26)The use of color photographs, the inclusion of non Clovis points from the site in type and photographs, the inclusion of maps and descriptions of how the site was found, the photos of the site as equipment was excavating the site, etc, help explain the discovery and the 'near miss" of this site to loss by construction. I rate this highly for use and enjoyment by amateur archaeologists, armchair students of early American inhabitation by Clovis and early cultures. Nice work Dr. Waters!
