Gaspar Sanz (1640 - 1710) is the most famous baroque-period guitarist. His works are tuneful and memorable, with fiery cross-rhythms and cascading scale passages. He published three books of guitar music. The baroque guitar could be viewed as a close relative of the ukulele. Indeed, the two instruments have much in common. The smaller four-course guitar actually had the same tuning as the ukulele, for example, although it was largely double-strung. Sanz enjoyed playing scales in the campanella style, with the notes of a scale set out on different strings, sonically overlapping slightly in the style of little bells. This is a technique the ukulele excels at, and is used to good effect in these arrangements. Sanz' music for baroque guitar transfers exceptionally well to the uke, as these arrangements demonstrate. It is hoped that this repertoire will bring a refreshing addition to the repertoire of the ukulele, just as the little instrument can bring a freshness to these old but lively pieces. This book comes with an online audio recording.

As it turns out, the ukulele has a history connected to the Renaissance and Baroque guitars. The re-entrant tuning (high G rather than low G on the fourth string) is the same as the Baroque guitar and the music translates well to the modern instrument. Ukulele is enjoying a 20 year resurgence, and if you like the the sound of Baroque and Renaissance lute and guitar, you can play the music without the difficulties of the lute, for example.Sanz as a composer employs scales in the campanella style, where the notes of the scale are arranged onto different strings so that you get a ringing tone (bell-like, hence campanella or bell, in Italian.) Because you are moving from note to note on different strings, your fingers do not stop the sustaining note and you get a harp-like or bell-like effect. The first piece in this book, Las Hachas, is my favorite. There is a CD included, and MacKillop has a very informative website, so just search it out and there is much more about this book and more info on ukuleles and related instruments.Contents:Alemanda La PreciosaCanariosCorienteEspañoletaFolíasFugaJácarasLa Coquina Francesa (The girl from France)La esfachata de Napoles (The girl from Naples)La míñona de Cataluña (The girl from Cataluña)La minina de Portugal (The girl from Portugal)LantururuLas HachasMatachinParadetasPassacalle in Dm (originally Am)RujeroZarabandaZarabanda Francesa (1)Zarabanda Francesa (2)

I would recommend it for intermediate level ukulele player or beginners who want a challenge. The book comes with a CD with all the songs, which is very helpful. The medieval style songs are an interesting break from the norm. All songs have tabs and standard notation. Some of the songs are very difficult to while others are so easy they can be played flawlessly from a simple sight-read.

Superb Collection By William Trotter Gaspar Sanz was a great Spanish vihuela composer. All the pieces are very well arranged for uke in fact they sound as if they were originally written for the uke.For a Baroque aficionado of plucked fretted instruments this book is a real treasure. The CD is truly remarkable music making.
