How to Surprise a Dad, by Jean Reagan

From School Library Journal K-Gr 3—When a brother and sister want to become super dad surprisers, they must first keep their father in the dark. They disguise this useful how-to guide and hide it among books their dad will not read. He must not see the bright digital artwork showing surprises they can make (pink hearts, a snow-dad, and amazing inventions) and do (reorganizing his stuff, going grocery shopping, and making him laugh) or the especially fine woodland spread with the kids showing him wonders he might not notice (a hidden squirrel, a busy anthill, and high flying geese). Having mastered any day surprises, they advance to special day surprises. They decorate a cake to look like their dad (with chocolate chip cookie ears and crooked candles in the chocolate icing hair) and make him presents (a treasure map, a paper airplane, and coupons for things they can do together). They enlist their mom's help getting everything together and, when necessary, distract their dad with a crazy dance. Then the three of them surprise dad with a birthday party. Young readers wanting their dads to read this book should have him sign a pledge not to remember the surprises. This intimate, humorous book will have children thinking of ways they can pleasantly surprise their own dads.—Mary Jean Smith, formerly at Southside Elementary School, Lebanon, TN

Humorous, educating, inspirational and warm book/guide for kids about making “their old man” happy By Helpful Advice ‘How to Surprise a Dad’ written by Jean Reagan and illustrated by Lee Wildish is a new work from authors that in last few years delivered two highly successful titles ‘How To Babysit A Grandpa’ and ‘Grandma’; this time they are back with collection of great and unusually humorous advices for children how to surprise their fathers.Once these two authors have dealt with the older family members, the subject of their new entertaining and innovatively designed picture book/guide is a collection of tips that will help children showing their Dads how much they are loved, making them laugh in process. The book is full of humor while the authors with the combination of entertaining illustrations and funny text are giving instruction to children how to prepare their book full of surprises - pointing out how important it is that this special book remains a surprise until the very end, until it will be ready for Dad to see it. And although it looks like the book was written just for children, particularly entertaining would be to read it together with Dad after children with Mom's help will carry out their secret plan, and in such a wonderful way surprise their beloved father.Jean Reagan put on every page two to three short humorous sentences, while Lee Wildish used digital illustrations full of colors and with many details that will be great for children between 5 and 8 years old.The lesson this picture book brought is clear - for our Dads is also important to show how much children love them because, although sometimes (some) fathers seem less interested for the children compared to mothers, preoccupied with work or not giving as much time and emotions to children as they would want, still they love their children immensely. Therefore, this book will certainly soften them and if by then children have not seen them like that, they'll see theirs fathers emotional and smiling, just the way children want their fathers to be all the time.Overall, with ‘How to Surprise a Dad’ the authors made humorous, educating, inspirational and warm book/guide that can be both recommended for its theme and artwork, bringing some great tips for children about how to make “their old man” happy.

By DiapersandDaydreams The perfect book to read – or have read to you – by the amazing superdad in your life! When a brother and sister duo want to surprise their dad, they work together to be stealthy and of course, as any good surprise must include, keep their father in the dark! The two have come up with a practical how-to-surprise-dad guide, which includes lessons on how to hide it among fake-titled books their dad will not read, amidst pink-heart crafts he’ll be distracted by. You can even learn how to master the art of reorganizing Dad’s stuff to throw him off your trail! Once the brother/sister duo teach you to master any-day surprises, they show you how to advance to a special day surprise, like making a special cake that looks like Dad or enlisting Mom to gather party supplies. This is a super funny, super loving guide to surprise the Super Dad who loves to read with you! Just remember to make him promise to forget all the surprise tactics! The illustrations are bright and colorful, full of laugh-out-loud call out text. This is a book the whole family will love for sure! And just in time for a great Father’s Day gift! Perhaps best read a few weeks before Father's Day or his birthday to jostle some ideas on what special to do for dad. Personally, I like making dad a neck tie out of thick paper which you glue cool stuff to.Doing something nice for dad is always a good idea.
