From Booklist While a skunk makes an unusual cover girl, a striking jacket illustration of a skunk invites readers to look inside this picture book on striped animals. Each page or double-page spread portrays one or more animals in an acrylic painting with clean lines; bold, simplified shapes; and some eye-catching color combinations. With lines such as “Propped on a log, / poised on a leaf. / Scaling a ridge / and scouting a reef,” short rhymed couplets string the illustrations together in a pleasant way but otherwise seem to have little purpose. The passage quoted above (spanning six pages) accompanies images of a frog, a butterfly, a skunk, and several fish. The animals are identified only in an appended section that reproduces the paintings in miniature and provides a bit of information related to each creature’s stripes. A challenging matching game is also appended. This attractive picture book, one of the few to focus on stripes in nature, offers images that a motivated teacher could use for discussion. Preschool-Grade 1. --Carolyn Phelan

Review A lovely, interactive exploration of stripes and a good introduction to some new animals. --Kirkus Reviews, March 1, 2013"This engaging introduction to patterns in nature is a visual delight." --School Library Journal, April 2013"Stockdale pairs precise acrylic illustrations with equally tidy verse to depict 19 striped animals... Appended pages discuss the ways stripes benefit each creature and also provide a guessing game for readers to match stripes with their respective animals." --Publisher's Weekly

The most familiar is probably the zebra and the skunk. In this book you will learn of many animals with stripes like a poisonous frog, a garter snake, an american badger, wild and domestic cats and more. You will learn why they have stripes, though some have stripes that can't be explained as to why they have them, at all. As you read along in the book the author in a singsong rhyme tells of the places these creatures exist here on our planet Earth. In the back of the book are more details about these creatures and where they live. Then there is an activity titled "STRIPES?" that ask, "Can you find the animals that belong to these stripes?".I found this to be a fun and entertaining book, a wonderful way to learn about these bold, beautiful and uniquely marked animals.I highly recommend this book to children ages 4-6, parents, grandparents, educators, librarians and caregivers.Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book from Peachtree Publisher for review. I was in no way compensated for this review. This is my honest opinion.

I liked it because the animals in the book are so pretty. I really liked the bird walking through the grass and the butterfly. My favorite part was the game where you get to match the stripes in the back of the book to the right animal. It was very fun. You can guess which animal it is and then check to see if you are right. It would have been better if it had more animals in it. I wanted it to be longer. Anyone who likes all different kinds of animals would like this book. This book would be good for children two years old to six years old.Review by Aubrey L., age 4, Greater New York Mensa

A book that children can love from infancy to school age By Mary Lavers (in Canada) As a daycare teacher, a parent and a book blogger, I often hear parents talk about what age is "too old" for board books, or "too old" for picture books, as though at a certain age children should throw out all their books in favour of "older" ones. But I disagree. Children should be encouraged to keep reading more difficult and challenging books, but that doesn't mean they have to give up their baby or toddler books. Many children have favourite pictures books that they continue to love even after they've moved on to chapter books. And books like Stripes of All Types are precisely the reason you shouldn't be too quick to discard your child's "baby books" as they get older. It's exactly the kind of book I can imagine kids loving from the time they are babies until they are well into school aged. The illustrations are simple, showing striped patterns of all different types of animals (hence, stripes of all types), from zebra and tiger and skunk to okapi and bongo and tapir. There's even a matching quiz at the end (my three-year-old was much better at it than I was).Disclaimer: I received a digital galley of this book free from the publisher from NetGalley. I was not obliged to write a favourable review, or even any review at all. The opinions expressed are strictly my own.
