Unusual Bio/Lit Crit By reading man Derrick Leon is long forgotten, but he's an unusual figure, at least to me, in the history of literature.As far as I can determine, he wrote three novels and three biographies before his early death at age 36, a victim of the then incurable TB. At least one of his novels was published by Hogarth Press, which accounts in part for the dedication of the book under review to Leonard and Virginia Woolf.He was not an academic. The scanty biographical information about him states that he worked as an interior decorator. Whether he ever became a full-time writer isn't clear from what I've read about him.He wrote biographies/critical studies of Tolstoy, Ruskin, and Proust, which I think is an unusual combination.His interest in Tolstoy and Ruskin seems to be more in their political and religious ideas than in their literary accomplishments, and as George Orwell notes in a short review of the Tolstoy book, he seems to be a sort of disciple of the great Russian novelist.Which makes his interest in Proust seem unusual.In 1940 there was very little in English about Proust, so perhaps he wrote the book under review as much to fill a gap as to express his undoubtedly genuine interest in the great French novelistIntriguingly, Vladimir Nabokov quotes Leon, ostensibly approvingly, in his lecture notes on literature, and given Nabokov's high standards for writers this suggests the quality of Leon's study.It's a very interesting read. Of course, the biographical material is significantly incomplete, given the amount of Proust research that's been done in the last 74 years, but the critical sections of the book (the lesser part of it) are worth considering.For one thing, Leon isn't afraid to say that A LA RECHERE is much too long and boring for large sections, something that certain Proustians would consider heretical (witness the two revisions of Moncrieff to include additional material). He also deals with the question of whether Proust was a "mystic", and whether his understanding of the relation of the imagination to the unconscious rings true, which I'd say is the key question in grasping Proust's major themes.There's so much available now on Proust, but given that a lot of it is written by French "theorists", a jackal pack from Barthes onward who don't understand anything about literature, a reader of Proust would do better to try Leon and ignore Deleuze and company if she wants a deeper understanding of the greatest French novel of the 20th century.
