The loss of a child is one of the most devastating events that can occur in a family. Unresolved parental grief can manifest in the lives of subsequent children, those born after a child dies, or becomes incapacitated, or in an older child whose life is redirected as a result of the loss of a sibling, or even in the case of some adopted children. Replacement Children refers to the experience of individuals who carry the weight of having to fill the void left by the loss. Parents struggling to cope may unknowingly burden another child with the expectations of healing the family. The replacement child experience can be the underlying, and often missed, explanation of a host of emotional issues. However, the challenges that replacement children face may also serve as a catalyst for unlocking a rich creative potential, talents and resourcefulness. Replacement Children: The Unconscious Script by Rita Battat Silverman, a replacement child herself, and respected psychiatrist Abigail Brenner, M.D., offers the best of the available research combined with compelling personal stories that illustrate this widespread syndrome. A variety of famous accounts, such as those of Katharine Hepburn and Vincent Van Gogh, help to address the myriad of personal challenges. This groundbreaking book provides a new understanding of how best to navigate the complex issues and familial circumstances that inadvertently and unconsciously created the replacement child syndrome. With a poignant, beautifully written foreword by Katie Couric, Replacement Children: The Unconscious Script provides vital information and sheds much needed light on this widespread phenomenon.

About the Author Rita Battat Silverman has a BA in psychology from Texas Wesleyan University and resides in New York City. She has been a life coach for over 30 years. She also works as a talent manager and freelance literary agent. Ms. Silverman knows firsthand what it is like to grow up as a “replacement child,” having been born 18 months after the death of her 14-year-old brother. The realization of the impact on her life came to her as an adult during a chance conversation. Upon exploring the subject for many years, she realized that there was a serious lack of consciousness about this experience and the impact it has on a family. Abigail Brenner, MD, attended New York Medical College, becoming a physician in 1977. She completed her internship and residency in psychiatry at New York University–Bellevue Medical Center in 1981, is board certified, and is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. Dr. Brenner is the author of three books—Transitions: How Women Embrace Change and Celebrate Life, SHIFT: How to Deal When Life Changes, and Life Matters: Stories of Transition, Healing, and Hope—and coauthor of The Essential Guide to Baby’s First Year. In addition, she has written several articles, is a guest on radio and television, and writes a monthly blog for Psychology Today.

Reading this book I realized that I recognized members of my family, neighbors, friends and co-workers. I even saw a glimpse of my own life. Well-written and gripping. Very interesting to read about the famous people who were replacement children. Equally fascinating to read about everyday people and their lives; these stories really made me think about all the people in my life and how so many fit "replacement children." I came away with a better understanding of everyone from a close friend to my own grandmother! Good read!

A fascinating read about an ageless phenomenon overlooked by many, the stories and commentary in this book have huge implications for almost everyone. Most interesting to me were the many stories of replacement children who, in their attempt to "measure up" to their lost sibling, managed to accomplish and achieve far more than their peers. Invaluable lessons for parents, children and siblings alike.
