Dzhomba: Kalmyk Tea is a study of the central food dish in the life of the Kalmyk people--a Mongol ethnicity, living in Russia for over 400 years. It is a collection of ethnographic information, ritual practices, folkloric texts, poetry, culinary descriptions, literary commentary, historic, and explanatory information. Most of the literary texts are presented in English, Russian, and Kalmyk and explanatory material in English. Translations of poems are the work of different translators, many of whom are recognized poets in their own right. Two National Poets of the Republic of Kalmykia are contributors to the project. The book traces the evolution of Kalmyk tea (dzhomba) from an everyday food dish, connected to the Kalmyk conception of the sacred, to a drink that has become a marker of ethnicity, largely serving a symbolic and group-integrative function. The first known Western reactions to the tea by literary giants Alexander Pushkin and Alexandre Dumas, père are part of the historic narrative. The book is a multi-year effort of an international team of scholars, poets, and translators.

More Than Just Tea By Angus This book opens a window into the culture of the little-known Republic of Kalmykia through the device of explaining all about Kalmyk tea--a black tea made with milk, butter, and salt--a nourishing tea suitable for a nomadic people living in a cold climate. The beverage serves an important role as a gesture of hospitality in this culture as the book makes clear through proverbs, riddles, and poetry. The author's enthusiasm is obvious throughout the book. The expert will appreciate the work of comparative literature here. There are texts in Russian, Kalmyk, and English. But the general reader will be rewarded since the English language translations and explanations are geared to make the material accessible to an American audience. This book is a good value and an excellent resource for both the expert and the armchair traveler.

By Sai-B This book serves as an excellent introduction into the culture of Europe's only indigenous Buddhists - the Kalmyks. The Kalmyks moved to the steppes of southern Russian in the 17th century and a small but vibrant community immigrated to the United States in the 1950's. While the authors focus on the importance of tea in Kalmyk culture (with texts in English, Russian and Kalmyk!) anyone interested in learning more about about this fascinating but generally little known group will find Dzhomba: Kalmyk Tea a helpful and enjoyable read.

Warm and Informative-Clearly laid out in 3 languages: Excellent exploration of things that come across/get lost in Translation By bklynmom Excellent introduction to a little known culture. Written in 3 languages - so if you have familiarity with more than 1 of them, it's nice to read in different languages and realize the subtle differences in meaning that come across/get lost in translation. Love that it was laid out that way. A warm tone stemming from the author's love and nostalgia for his late mother and his finding her again, through exploring her culture.
