Online practice tests/grading, mobile registration, practice questions, and video + DVD + old school book By Victor Blake Yes -- my teen like many, think that anything on a mobile (cell phone) is better than on paper. Anything to get her to spend more time preparing seems wise -- so with a pretty large screen (android phone) she can now do practice questions online, watch videos -- and this is the MOST IMPORTANT PART -- REGISTER FOR FREE ONLINE TESTS WHICH GET GRADED ONLINE.This is A GREAT service from Kaplan because it simulates both the time for the test, gets graded online (automatically) and they get to see the results. The test is not done from mobile (although in theory it could be with a web browser on a cell phone), but you can select and register for a practice test on the mobile. Then you take the test online.As other reviewers have pointed out, the SAT test is undergoing changes beginning next year (in 2016). Of course this book focuses on strategies and practice for the SAT as it is currently structured. As a parent, I still think it is worth the investment in time for a student (who has already taken the PSAT twice) to study for the SAT as currently structured. The first is that although the SAT is a test, studying for the SAT is a way for students (including mine) to learn. As it has done for generations it pushes students to stretch their vocabulary, read carefully, and in mathematics both read carefully, think critically, and execute calculations and problem solving with care.This book includes a DVD with tutorials that was very welcome by my daughter. She found the information in the tutorial to be reasonably consistent with the advice she's received from her school regarding strategies, but to include details such as working through specific kinds of questions (how the questions are structured). As with the other books (without the DVD), this also includes practice tests which I've asked her to and she has completed both untimed and timed.Even with the changes coming to the SAT there is significant value in both the content to be learned, the discipline of taking a (long) test, and practicing test taking as a routine matter. This is very helpful in reducing the anxiety of a test. Whatever changes are made to the format and structure of the test, it seems certain the test will include much the same subject matter and content. Given the way that tests are machine graded it is unlikely that the changes to the test will result in anything other than different kinds of multiple choice, selection, and other currently used test questions. For these reasons or if your student is taking the test next year (before the changes that are coming), this is certainly worth the investment not only to purchase, but in the time comittment to work through the examples, tutorials, and practice tests.

When she saw how much material she needed to review for the SATs it took her by surprise. An extremely detailed and well thought out layout for studying for the SATS. There is a ton of information which is a boom to anyone taking this test.

The bottom line is that this is a good review for a standardized test By Inna Tysoe The bottom line is that this is a good review for a standardized test. All standardized tests have certain things in common and one of them is that you need to be self-aware enough to know where you are on the test so that you can knock out the easier problems and devote more time to the harder ones (if the harder ones are worth more points.) The other thing they all have in common is that you need a certain amount of discipline to sit and concentrate intensely during a very long test. This book is excellent in providing some really great, common sense tips on how to quickly work out problems and gives you some strategies on dealing with the test itself. An example may illustrate what I mean. One of the practice math problems asks: “A certain pump can drain a full 375-gallon tank in 15 minutes. At this rate, how many more minutes would it take to drain a full 600-gallon tank? “Now, you can do this problem the hard way. You can say that Rate*Time = Volume; Rate=Volume/Time. Substitute the numbers you are given and find that the rate is 25. Then put the 25 in the new equation 25 * Time = (600-375) and come up with 9. Which is answer A. And it’s very tempting to do it this way. However, as the book points out, you don’t have to. All you have to do is notice that “Because we are dealing with additional minutes, we’re really just looking for the amount of time it would take to drain 600-375=275 gallons. 225 is less than 375 so it should take less than 15 minutes. The only choice less than 15 is A.” So you get the same answer but in a lot less time and speed is really important on these tests.So this is a really good review book for students who can take the 2015 version of the SAT because it does a really good job of showing you the tricks to use. The DVD and the cell phone options should also be welcome for kids preparing for the SAT today.Having said all that, a book preparatory guide is, at the end of the day, only as good as the effort you put into it. Buying a book is not enough. You actually have to go through it (sometimes several times) before test day if you expect your results to improve. With that caveat, I think this is a really good study guide.
