The book gave basic but good tips on getting started finding your voice, developing creativity and on feedback and criticism. This book helps those who are overwhelmed and are just looking for where to begin.

By Rob Natiuk The author of this book gets me into his skin by telling me how he got interested in writing well. It wasn't easy but from that journey he learned important lessons. These he shares with us.1. "You Need Ideas. The importance of outlines. Don't worry about "creativity;" it will come as you write-- brainstorm, visualize -- and outline, like J. K. Rowling did. "Outlines are life savers!"2. "Let Yourself Suck." The problem of continuing to write consistently resides in our trying to be perfect. How to overcome that. Oops--the author stated a no-no in this chapter-- "Needless to say." That's trite and needless, Jay. But he shows the importance of making progress, moving forward. And don't let "the editor" sit on your shoulders--don't be worried about improving your writing while writing. Just write. [I don't know if I'm going to deduct one star for that grating word "suck."]3. "Expand Your Vocabulary." Through reading well-written works and researching, you can do that. Conversations and the "A Word a Day" habit are useful too. I might add, though, that it is not the big words that make for powerful writing as the images you form with figures of speech--the similes, metaphors, sharp description with simple words and their arrangements.4. "Finding Your Voice." That's more than style; it is the connection you form with your readers, the emotions he or she will share as you share. "Does this feel natural or does it feel like unbearable work?" is a good question to ask of your writing.5. "Feedback & Criticism." [Don't use "&" for "and."] You might get a lot of warm criticism from your friends and family. But listen more to adverse criticism from others. It's better to receive it from them than from your future editors and readers.This is a heartfelt, helpful book for beginning writers and those well along the way--such as I am with 50 years of writing, much of it professionally.Well, okay. I'll give this book five stars although that fifth one was just about "sucked" away

Spending time with more writers also is more helpful than this book. It did remind me to sign back up for Word of the day,
