Positively Quit simplifies the process of becoming a non-smoker. Cassius, himself an ex-smoker, starts from the beginning, guiding you to recall how and why you started smoking. He then empowers you through the process of undoing your decision to start smoking. He prepares you for each of the challenges you will face and outlines your alternatives to smoking. For those who are curious, his final chapter explains the science behind his approach to quitting. This is the only manual you will need to stop smoking and, when you follow his steps, you will rediscover the freedom of being a non-smoker. The original Positively Quit manual was published in 2010. It has been used with success by Quitober (Australia), is being used by the St. Joseph Hospital, NH and is recommended by the Michigan Cancer Consortium.

Gooch Cassius Cheong's The Positively Quit Manual is a guide to quitting smoking for people who need a fresh, new perspective. I found the advice to be extremely relevant to beginning the behavior modification that it requires to finally quit.As a current smoker, I have tried the following methods over the past 35 years:1. Cold Turkey - Failed 5 or 6 times. I still have ex-friends that don't speak.2. Hypnosis - I paid $100 for a short nap and a cassette tape that I listened to one time and fell asleep again.3. Zyban - Or as my kids called it, "Dad the smoking zombie".4. Nicotine Patch - Didn't faze my addiction one bit. It did give me a rash that I enjoyed.5. Nicotine Gum - Smoking and chewing gum became my new addiction. I had to wean myself off the gum with more cigarettes.6. Chantix - 3 rounds of complete and utter failure. I will admit it lessened the urge and I did cut down but in the end, it didn't work. I could have bought a good used car for what I spent on this.7. Copenhagen Snuff - I felt sure this would work. Similar to the gum, I became addicted to both snuff and cigarettes. Finally gave up the snuff after I had to have a golf ball size tumor surgically removed from under my jaw.So you see, this is not my first rodeo.I believe the strongest part of this book is the way the author took the reasons we cite for not being able to give up smoking and/or the pleasant attributes and completely destroyed them with logic and reasoning. I am the worlds worst at trying to rationalize my weakness. This book gave an authoritive and compelling new perceptive on these so-called rationalizations. As the book states, the cigarettes are causing the problems that we pretend they are fixing. Almost makes you mad at yourself for not looking at it from this angle. This book is just full of great advice. I am going to read it again and then set my quit date (while not telling anyone - again, great advice).I hope you find this review helpfulMichael L. 5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Logical and clear By Brad Teare This is a great book for those wishing to stop smoking (and, I suspect, for those with other addictions). There are parts where the reader fills out goals and attitudes but this is not over done (as in some "work-book" type books which are mostly blank pages). This book is primarily a very analytical review of the mental process of addiction. Once the addiction process is fully understood you can successfully defuse your subconscious efforts to keep smoking. This method is somewhat akin to cognitive therapy, a well known method to cure depression and anxiety. The Positively Quit method is simple enough to implement easily yet complex enough to give you enough tools to defeat addiction. For example, Cheong gives three basic ways a person tries to quit an addiction: cold turkey, cutting down, and nicotine replacement therapy. He outlines why each method fails and why the Positively Quit method will succeed. It makes sense and clearly demonstrates the obstacles of other methods.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Mind over matter By Judith Paley I quit smoking 32 years ago for three reasons: 1) I realized you could always tell a middle-aged smoker by their slightly grayish complexion, 2) Vertical wrinkles above the upper lip into which lipstick colors bled also identified aging smokers, 3) I wanted to be the person who quit smoking. As a physician, I knew the health detriments of smoking, but the motivation to quit came from a different perspective entirely. So I was pleased to read Cas's pamphlet which focused on developing a state of mind for quitting rather than on the deliverance of a stern lecture about the healthy consequences of tossing the smokes. Much rang true with respect to the self-talk that I've found helpful both in abandoning my own cigarette habit and in helping others accomplish the same. Quitting is a process more than an event, and this little book gives a good overview of the road to a quitter's attitude and a lot of encouragement for the journey.Like Cas, I have never met an ex-smoker who was sorry she'd quit, but I meet a lot of smokers who anticipate mournfully the prospect of the rest of their lives without their little white, cylindrical 'friends'. Cas does a nice job of showing how you too can travel from that sense of loss unto freedom and joy.
