"Cold Serial" paints the picture of five girls who were raped and strangled in the Dayton, Ohio, area between 1900 and 1909. The working conditions, lack of rights for women and police protection, and the sexism of the age portray these girls as victims not only of a crime but also of their time. As their stories unfold, a common thread appears, a modus operandi that begins to link them together. During that era, police did not recognize the lurking shadow of a predator. But through diligent research conducted by the author, it is now revealed.

"Cold Serial" contains riveting, fast-paced portraits of the personal and family tragedies of these five girls as well as the brutality and victim blaming of that time. Yet the deaths of these girls were not in vain, as they made significant contributions to the Dayton, Ohio, area and, ultimately, the nation. Sadly, though, according to the police authorities of the time, these crimes were never solved.

Using criminological thinking of today, the author attempts to solve these murders/rapes. Did he discover others? Can the suspect be placed at the scene of all of the crimes? Does a serial murderer/rapist emerge in a time even before the coining of the term? The escape of one girl creates a twist that opens the door to solving these crimes.

There are no memorials to any of these girls, nor were any tributes made. As their cases grew cold, their voices were silenced. "Cold Serial" provides the long-overdue justice and the voice they so richly deserve.

By Ann Marie Ackermann Brian Forschner is a former criminal justice instructor from Dayton, Ohio. He wrote Cold Serial, his first book for a popular audience, after discovering his great-aunt was the victim of a serial killer. Jack the Stranger stalked Dayton in the early 19th century. It was a case that then made international news. This book treads the boundary between true crime and fiction – not unlike Bill O’Reilly’s and Martin Dugard’s Killing Lincoln – in that Forschner invents some of the dialogue and thoughts of the characters, but the technique works. His forte is that he brings the characters to life in a way to make the reader care about them.Despite the invented dialogue, the events in this story were quite real. Forschner researched them in such detail that 19th century Dayton becomes a character of its own. Like a murder mystery author, Forschner presents a few false leads that Dayton’s detective had to track down, and thus leaves the reader uncertain about the true culprit until the dramatic ending. An extra bonus is Forschner’s criminal justice background, which he draws on in his explanation of 19th century investigations. If I have any complaint about this book, it would be that I’d have liked to have seen more about early criminal investigations, against the backdrop of the law, societal attitudes, and available technology.

The author brought a totally unknown case of serial murder out of the shadows (it's not very often that I find a serial murder case I've never heard of) and covered it in detail, day by day, explaining the events while taking into account the way things were in early 1900s Dayton. In the very last pages he identifies a suspect; I think he's probably right, and so did the police of the time. But lack of evidence meant the man was only convicted in a single rape case.I hope this isn't Mr. Forschner's last book; I'd love to see more of his writing, particularly in the historical true crime department.

By Yankeelin The world needs more men like Brian Forschner, who know how to string words together in an amazing way, and who care enough for the voiceless to tell THEIR stories. The author meticulously researched the deaths of 5 girls in the prime of their lives, at the turn of the century, and made them 3 dimensional. Made you care. One of whom he discovered was a relative! I don't know how he did it, it's as if he time traveled back to that era and wrote of the ongoing crime spree. He tells their stories and brings them back to life for us to have a glimpse. And he does it with heart.
