Review I can't think of a better authority on agenting than one of the country's best agents. Chip MacGregor not only pulled my career from out of the ashes, he guided it on a path to New York Times, Amazon, and USA Today bestselling-status. His management savvy and articulate knowledge of the ever changing publishing marketplace has enabled me to make a very good living writing fiction.      -Vincent Zandri, New York Time and USA Today Bestselling author of Everything Burns and The RemainsChip MacGregor is the person who comes to mind when a writer asks for guidance. Why? He has a sharp eye for talent, a passion for good books, and he loves - albeit toughly - the people who provide them. So aspiring writers have two choices. We can seek out Chip in person, buy him a Guinness, and listen carefully. (This is a delightful experience, but you will need to stalk him, which is creepy and time consuming.) Or you read this book. Let me recommend the second choice. The overuse of Chip's book will not result in a hangover.-Dwight Baker, President, Baker Publishing GroupIf you want to succeed as a writer, buy this book. Literary agent Chip MacGregor has put together a thorough resource for writers who need to navigate today's complex world of writing and publishing.-WRITER'S DIGEST Chuck Sambuchino, Editor. Bestselling author of Guide to Literary Agents, Children's Writer's & Illustrator's Market, and guidetoliteraryagents.com/blogHow Can I Find a Literary Agent is a rock-solid resource for authors from a guy who knows the publishing business inside and out.-Brian Hampton, Publisher, HarperCollins

You get straight-forward information in large quantities from literary agent Chip MacGregor and his colleague Holly Lorincz. Some of this material began in his popular blog: http://www.chipmacgregor.com/It doesn't matter if you are a pure beginner or an experienced writer, you will discover gems of information and insights in this slim volume. For example, in the opening section on writing for publication, MacGregor writes, "If you want punch and strength to your writing, write with nouns and verbs." (Page 1)This book is much more than reworked material from the blog, as explained, "For example, while preparing this book, which just happens to be based on my long-running industry blog, we've included newly written entries, excerpts from media interviews, and questions and answers from workshops I've taught, as well as a slew of questions from various sources." (Page 114)I've known MacGregor many years and appreciated his forthright prose. As he explains toward the end of the book, "Publishing is an 80/20 business (that is, 80% of the profits come from 20% of the books), so publishers tend to go \the safe route, pushing the new book from last year's bestselling author, or focusing on the books by people with big author platforms." (Page 118 to 119).To give your writing life a boost, you need to read and follow the advice in this book.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. if you ever wondered what's the best way to broach this issue By Gerald O'Connor You've finished the book, wrote the synopsis and query letter... now what do you do? Start querying agents, right? They are one of the prime gatekeepers after all, the ones who can move your manuscript up out of the slush pile and into the hands of editors. Well, if you ever wondered what's the best way to broach this issue, what classic errors to avoid when submitting queries, then this is the book for you. In an easy-to-read Q&A format this book is essential for anyone who writes with an eye to publishing their work, and even more so for those on the cusp of querying their novels. The web is full of informative blogs and opinions on how to secure agents, on how to pique the interest of the big publishing houses, but it is hard to know the correct advice from all the noise you inevitably find online. This is an insider's scoop and a great resource for writers, and in this regard it's priceless. Reading How I Can Find a Literary Agent is like having a sneaky peak behind the curtains into the current workings of the 'business' with agents Chip MacGregor and Holly Lorincz taking you by the hand. A must buy for all... fledgling authors or not.
