More writing courses than ever are being taught online, and effective online writing instruction requires teachers to communicate deliberately and clearly in order to have productive relationships with their students. THE ONLINE WRITING CONFERENCE: A GUIDE FOR TEACHERS AND TUTORS By Gail Summerskill Dr. Beth Hewett's' latest book, THE ONLINE WRITING CONFERENCE: A GUIDE FOR TEACHERS AND TUTORS, is a comprehensive theoretical and practical guide for online teachers and tutors to help students improve their writing through conferencing. Dr. Hewett sets the stage with a theoretical overview of the online writing conference and how to establish trust with students in that unique environment. She then reviews theories typically guiding online conferencing and follows this with practical approaches to help improve instruction in online writing conferences. As the Director of Writing at Strayer University, I am always looking for practical, yet theoretically sound approaches, to help our University's 3,500 faculty members improve the writing of their 47,000 online students. In the fall of 2010, over 200 Strayer University faculty members received a copy of Dr. Hewett's book and attended webinars she hosted to discuss how to respond to students' writing online. She broke the key components of the book into a 5 step process for improving the teaching of writing in online settings, including: Think formative not summative; Focus tightly; Be straightforward; Teach don't talk; and Format thoughtfully. You will have to read her book to get the details of these sensible steps. As one of the Strayer University faculty members who read Beth Hewett's book said, "This book is VERY valuable and should be required for all Strayer University teachers." I agree; Beth Hewett's book, THE ONLINE WRITING CONFERENCE: A GUIDE FOR TEACHERS AND TUTORS, should be read by anyone who wants to become a better teacher or tutor in the online conference setting.

Other reviews for this book outline its content in great detail, so I'll just chime in briefly...Chapter 8 is worth the price of the book. I wish all online instructors of writing read this chapter to help them add some structure and self-evaluation to their teaching. Appendix 2 was also a helpful read with its discussion of direct and indirect speech acts; the insights gained are applicable to both my commenting on student papers and my online tutoring work.If you're looking for a book with quite a few analyzed samples of both synchronous and asynchronous conferences, this book will also prove to be helpful.

Review of Hewett's "The Online Writing Conference" By Charles F Warner Dr. Hewett's text provides a first-of-its-kind guide for teachers, tutors, writing center administrators and anyone else involved in the process of helping students improve their work through one-on-one online writing conferences. Hewett's theoretically-grounded work addresses the importance of responding to student writing within a problem-centered context, which encourages students and instructors to work collaboratively to improve their writing. Her instructional advice details several strategies for engaging students in the revision process including addressing the highest-order revision concerns first, using personalized revision demonstrations with the students' own text, and developing a credible, supportive rapport through direct phrasing and language at the student's level of learning. She offers several examples of asynchronous conferences or "tutorials" that demonstrate these strategies. These strategies and examples, coupled with her compelling accounts of experiences, failures, and successes, all work to ease the discomfort and fear often associated with teaching and learning in the online environment. The text itself becomes one master asynchronous tutorial in the way it models and enacts the instructional advice it offers, particularly through the action plans Hewett incorporates at the end of every chapter that summarize the main aspects and provide a guiding checklist for instructors/tutors. Without a doubt, her text contributes to a richer understanding of writing response and writing center theory and practice as it applies to the online environment. Hewett's text serves as a foundation for written response in online writing instruction and a springboard for more research on the perceptions and implications of online writing conferencing for both students and instructors/tutors. In my work with a leading online writing center, I rely on Hewett's text as the quintessential guidebook for understanding the theory and practice of crafting personalized, rhetorically-focused, asynchronous instructional tutorials.Allison Warner, Ph.D.
