Generations of student writers have been subjected to usage handbooks that proclaim, "This is the correct form. Learn it"--books that lay out a grammar, but don't inspire students to use it. By contrast, this antihandbook handbook, presenting some three hundred sentences drawn from the printed works of a single, typical day in the life of the language--December 29, 2008--tries to persuade readers that good grammar and usage matter.

Using real-world sentences rather than invented ones, One Day in the Life of the English Language gives students the motivation to apply grammatical principles correctly and efficiently. Frank Cioffi argues that proper form undergirds effective communication and ultimately even makes society work more smoothly, while nonstandard English often marginalizes or stigmatizes a writer. He emphasizes the evolving nature of English usage and debunks some cherished but flawed grammar precepts. Is it acceptable to end a sentence with a preposition? It is. Can you start a sentence with a conjunction? You can. OK to split an infinitive? No problem.

A grammar and usage handbook like no other, One Day in the Life of the English Language features accessible chapters divided into "Fundamentals," "Fine Tuning," and "Deep Focus," allowing readers to select a level most suited to their needs. It also includes a glossary, a teachers' guide, and a section refuting some myths about digital-age English.

Review "This little volume has several things going for it: it's compact, bound in the style of an industrial manual, so it can take a lot of punishment."--Mary Norris, Times Literary Supplement"Cioffi effectively employs a fast-paced narrative style that readers will find entertaining and insightful."--Teaching Matters Monthly"The work is accessible, fun to read, and packed with helpful information on almost every page. It will appeal to a wide audience--not only those who love grammar but also those who do not."--Library Journal"For readers at any level who are seeking to improve their written English, One Day in the Life of the English Language helps to make grammar relatable and rewarding. . . . A creative alternative for students of all ages."--Sarah Powell, Reference Reviews

From the Back Cover

"One Day in the Life of the English Language is a welcome departure from the vast majority of grammar handbooks. Cioffi suggests that instead of memorizing tons of rules about sentence structure, students should internalize how sentences work--and with the motivation he gives, students have the incentive to want to write well. I truly love this book."--Elizabethada A. Wright, University of Minnesota

"One Day in the Life of the English Language is a book for all writers and teachers of writing--without getting mired in minutia. Cioffi examines the English language as it actually is written today, in the real world rather than how it 'should' be written--a simple but powerful concept that easily lends itself to any classroom. Cioffi knows his subject inside out."--Rebecca Chace, author of Leaving Rock Harbor

"Students will find Cioffi's approach intriguing and refreshing, since he is not merely telling them what they should do, but describing options currently in print. They will also enjoy his humorous and casual tone."--Lydia McDermott, Whitman College

About the Author Frank L. Cioffi is professor of English at Baruch College, City University of New York, and has taught writing at Princeton and Indiana universities and at Bard and Scripps colleges. He is the author of The Imaginative Argument: A Practical Manifesto for Writers (Princeton), among other books.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An excellent book on grammar and usage, centered around real-world examples By K. Bunker Author Frank Cioffi provides a concise description of this book in his introduction: "When I imagined this book, I wanted a volume that didn’t just lay out the “rules” -- we have lots of books that do that quite well -- but one that did something in addition to that. I wanted to provide a human voice chatting about those rules, one that used real-world rather than manufactured language as its model, and one that tried to show how using language carefully can improve the quality of human interactions."The use of "real-world examples" is the most unique and interesting aspect of this book. As the title indicates, Cioffi has taken his examples of poor or questionable English usage from a variety of sources, all of them published on a single day: December 29, 2008. Thus, rather than having usage do's and don'ts illustrated with tiresomely simple-minded "textbook examples," the samples Cioffi uses were actually published by professional writers and editors. One consequence of this approach is that there are far more passages that Cioffi flags as "questionable usage" than there are those marked as "nonstandard usage." This leads to interesting discussions of what makes a certain sentence or phrase "questionable," what the applicable usage rule is, what that rule is based on, how the sample passage might be unclear, awkward, or just plain wrong, and how the passage might be improved. And this, to put it simply, is great stuff. This is looking at English usage where the proverbial rubber hits the road; looking at real-world issues that have tripped up real-world writers doing real-world writing. That said, and in spite of this book's easy, conversational tone, it is still eminently useful as a straightforward reference book. It's very well organized, and in it you can quickly look up such things as a list of 13 correct uses of commas or a concise definition of "preposition."This book will be useful as a college-level textbook, but it should definitely also be read by anyone who wants to improve his or her writing skills. And that, in turn, should include pretty much everyone. As Cioffi says in his conclusion to the book: "I believe a fundamental human desire is to be understood by others. People want confidence that their words convey and fully embody their thoughts, feelings, and ideas." If you want to be understood, if you don't want your message to be undermined by error-riddled presentation, this book will be an invaluable help.Full disclosure: I received a copy of this book in return for a review.

I'm starting on "punctuation". I have always kind of "guessed" what we used in grammar school. It was part of growing up. I am hoping for "official" useful rules for helping "non-native speakers" be more comfortable with their writing.Very enjoyable book.
