Finalist for the 2015 Wishing Shelf Awards. Goodreads Reviews "Broken is graphic, shocking, raw, disturbing, intense, appalling, shameful, and so very, very sad." "This story has the complexity of The Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy, but written with the flow of Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson." "Your heart will have been on such an emotional rollercoaster by the end of this book, it may take some time to learn how to beat steady again." "There are a few really great lines/thoughts here. Little treasures I wanted to underline or come back to later. Some really great words." "Hypnotic and addicting." "Heart wrenching." "Raw." When William, a young journalist, seeks out Elizabeth, an acclaimed author, in hopes to write her biography, the recluse grants him twenty-four hours to hear her story. What unfolds are a wide range of traumas that teeter on the edge of macabre and psychological thriller. While toggling the lines of insanity, Elizabeth examines her past filled with neglect, rape, abuse, torture, and pedophilia. The more Elizabeth delves into her psyche, the more William witnesses the multiple mental conditions Elizabeth developed to cope with a life without love, comfort, protection, trust, physical human contact, affection, therapy, or medication. With the use of existentialism, I wrote Broken in an attempt to philosophical determine what I had become and why. Instead, I found the awareness I needed to seek help. Broken is the road map I took to arrive at "Awareness" and seek medical attention.

About the Author Angela B. Chrysler is a writer, logician, philosopher, and die-hard nerd who studies theology, historical linguistics, music composition, and medieval European history in New York with a dry sense of humor and an unusual sense of sarcasm. Growing up without books, Ms. Chrysler spent her early life reading the encyclopedia for fun. By mid-teens, she gained access to her school library, and began working her way through the Great Books. She spent many an afternoon in an old opera house turned library in the town where she grew up. There, she found her passion for reading and writing through the words of Hugo, Shakespeare, Tennyson, and Poe. She lives in a garden with her family and cats.

As she tells you over and over in her description and author’s notes, it features a lot of topics that will make people very uncomfortable and could even be dangerous for some readers as “trigger” topics for victims of trauma. If you can read it, however, it’s hypnotic in her storytelling. It reads with the ease of literature but with the organic flow of a person’s recollections. It’s raw. When I was younger, my mother told me about what it was like to see Judy Garland sing live; that she was like an exposed nerve on stage. She couldn’t put herself out there without just putting all of herself out there, which had to be the source of her greatest gifts and greatest flaws. Reading Broken was, for me, what I imagined seeing Garland sing was like.It was like opening up pages to a person holding their heart and soul in their hands, bleeding in front of you, and screaming, listen to me and how can you not listen? When someone stands before you like that, it is almost impossible to truly ignore what is right before your eyes. I could barely tear my own away, even through the darkest scenes and the spirit-grinding moments that are described, both with chilling rationality and bleeding passion. Like you put down the book and are almost surprised that your hands are clean. If you can read this book, I don’t think you’ll come out the other side precisely as you were. And it is with great courage that Ms. Chrysler has come to share it. It deserves no less than my best rating. Even though the events and history in the story are not to be celebrated, the author is. 5 Fireballs.

It took me several weeks because I could only handle it in small chunks. The writing is beautiful in the same way an avalanche is beautiful. The result of reading the words is devastating as is the result of an avalanche. When I read about abuse in the newspaper, it churns my stomach, but I can push it away because I don't know the people, and they're far away. In Broken, you enter a world of abuse through the narrator's head. Told in an almost dispassionate voice, the horrific events are made even more horrific by the matter-of-fact way in which the narrator accepts what has happened to her. The way she fails to blame her tormentors and blames herself for what they do to her.To me, it's almost inconceivable that people could treat a child, a young woman, in this way. But it was inconceivable to most people that the tales coming out of Nazi Germany could be true. This book isn't set in a far away place. It's right down the street, or maybe even next door.If you can read Broken and not be moved, if you can read it and not cry, then you need to consider your humanity. In spite of the very dark story, the fact that the book exists is a ringing celebration of hope and redemption.

First and foremost, it is not an easy book to read. It is very emotional and very dark and I applaud and salute to Angela for her incredible bravery and courage to go down that cobwebbed, dark, scary and rabid hole.Broken is incredible in so many ways, but for me it particularly resonated, because I went through many hard, very personal and very hurtful things and so I felt deep connection with Angela, not just as a reader, but also on a spiritual level that I know people connect after they go through similar experiences.I can't express how brave I think Angela is for publishing Broken. I think it will help people to deal with their emotional baggage and issues. Broken deserves a prime spot on memoir and psychological books charts. And it is not just the book, it is also Angela's writing that sucked me in from the first page. It has a dream quality at times, letting the reader to take a breath between the onslaught of emotions. Broken is not for a squeamish reader, it tackles dark, graphic and very violent topics. And for those reasons alone, writing memoir like that, the writer has to be strong and confident. Angela is exactly that and more, not letting any part of her life unexplored, or unspoken. She tells it all, tells it as it was, without embellishments - good or bad.I believe that Broken is not just a brave book, but an important one for anyone, who went through dark moments in their life, through traumas that they didn't see a way out of. For people, who thought that they were alone with their demons and couldn't escape their claws. And for those, who never went through anything as traumatic as Angela had, it is equally important read, to not just understand how cruel, unfair, brutal and scary life can be. To become more compassionate towards each other, to understand people, who struggle with depression, addiction and abuse. How much energy, time and strength it takes to pull out of that rut and to be willing and wanting to get better, to get healthy and to cry out for help, even though sometimes there is no one to hear that plea.I am very grateful for writers like Angela, who are willing to put all their dirty laundry on the line, to let us see all the bad and the good at the end, to be able to open that very needed discussion about mental problems, abuse, addictions and recovery.
