From the Author Years ago, when I added "publish a book" to my bucket list, I had no idea that it would take a Stage III breast cancer diagnosis to make it happen. The idea to interview forty long term breast cancer survivors and share their stories was born within the stark white walls of my oncologist's office. I was overwhelmed during that first appointment, especially when my doctor began discussing my treatment options in relation to five year survival rates. I stopped listening when I heard those words, "five year survival rates". They echoed throughout the recesses of my brain. I pictured my two little boys, ages seven and nine at the time...they wouldn't even be able to drive in five years. So I interrupted my oncologist and told her that I didn't care about five year survival rates. I wanted the treatment plan that would allow me to survive for forty years. I went home that night and planned a party: October 17, 2052 on the beaches of Sanibel Island, Florida...forty years in the future from my date of diagnosis. A year of intense treatment including a bilateral mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation was accompanied by interviews with forty women from around the world who are thriving twenty, thirty, forty even fifty years after diagnosis. Inspiring women of all ages, with different types and stages of breast cancer, including Stage IV. They were willing to share their stories of that fateful day of diagnosis, journey through treatment and how they are celebrating life decades after breast cancer. Their stories made me laugh, cry and helped me view breast cancer through a different lens. No one is disputing that this disease has a dark side and there are no cures within these pages, but these women helped me heal the many hidden scars of breast cancer. Beverly McKee, MSW, LCSW, is a licensed mental health therapist by training, writer at heart, and has an unbridled passion for empowering others to celebrate life, even in the midst of crisis. A dynamic, results-driven social service executive with more than two decades of leadership and public-speaking experience, she has guided countless others through personal and professional challenges.
One random Wednesday afternoon, her life was boldly interrupted with news that would forever alter the landscape of her existence: Stage III breast cancer.
