Providing a comprehensive, pedagogical introduction to scattering amplitudes in gauge theory and gravity, this book is ideal for graduate students and researchers. It offers a smooth transition from basic knowledge of quantum field theory to the frontier of modern research. Building on basic quantum field theory, the book starts with an introduction to the spinor helicity formalism in the context of Feynman rules for tree-level amplitudes. The material covered includes on-shell recursion relations, superamplitudes, symmetries of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory, twistors and momentum twistors, Grassmannians, and polytopes. The presentation also covers amplitudes in perturbative supergravity, 3D Chern-Simons matter theories, and color-kinematics duality and its connection to 'gravity=(gauge theory)x(gauge theory)'. Basic knowledge of Feynman rules in scalar field theory and quantum electrodynamics is assumed, but all other tools are introduced as needed. Worked examples demonstrate the techniques discussed, and over 150 exercises help readers absorb and master the material.

Scattering Amplitudes in Gauge Theory and Gravity, by Henriette Elvang, Yu-tin Huang

Review "In recent years, a series of surprising insights and new methods have transformed the understanding of gauge and gravitational scattering amplitudes. These advances are important both for practical calculations in particle physics, and for the fundamental structure of relativistic quantum theory. Elvang and Huang have written the first comprehensive text on this subject, and their clear and pedagogical approach will make these new ideas accessible to a wide range of students." Joseph Polchinski, University of California, Santa Barbara"This book provides a much-needed text covering modern techniques that have given radical new insights into the structure of quantum field theory. It gathers together a very large body of recent literature and presents it in a coherent style. The book should appeal to the wide body of researchers who wish to use quantum field theory as a tool for describing physical phenomena or who are intending to gain insight by studying its mathematical structure." Michael B. Green, University of Cambridge

About the Author Henriette Elvang is Associate Professor in the Department of Physics, University of Michigan. She has worked on various aspects of high energy theoretical physics, including black holes in string theory, scattering amplitudes, and the structure of gauge theories.Yu-tin Huang is Assistant Professor at the National Taiwan University. He is known for his work in the study of scattering amplitudes beyond four dimensions, most notably in 3-dimensional Chern-Simons matter theory.

Carrasco I've known both Henriette and Yu-tin since almost the beginning of my exposure to the field of scattering amplitudes, and I can think of no better theoreticians to write a readable introduction to this deep and surprising subject. This is a fantastic tutorial for many of the 4D methods at the heart of modern calculation, written by some of the clearest thinkers around. While Henriette and Yu-tin are deservedly known and admired for their significant contributions, both have developed a well-earned reputation for their ability to communicate clearly the essence of the matter at hand, a reputation strongly supported by this text.I would say that while most of the material is geared towards a tree-level / 1-loop understanding, sufficient background is provided for anyone to happily tackle *and contribute to* the active live-literature at the forefront of the field. From what I've seen students with a decent undergraduate grasp of physics are well prepared to tackle the exercises -- well written, unambiguous, and absolutely crucial to understand a field that is, after all, all about insight gleaned through and exposed by calculation. This is an obvious must-have for those lured by siren song of grassmanians / amplituhedra / polytopes, or any with a yearning desire to understand in what sense gravity can be thought of as the `square' of gauge theories. Furthermore I think this could be very useful for seasoning any students of relativistic quantum field theory looking for sharp observable understanding, free of gauge-dependence.The field continues to rapidly develop, but what is presented here will definitely stand the test of time (much of the core known to experts for over two decades, but never made clear in a textbook form as accessible and thorough as this). Of course it also introduces many of the marvelous surprises developed and discovered over the past decade.I absolutely wish something like this was around when I was new to the field, and am happy to refer students to it.
