About the Author Michael Carter lives in Livermore, California and has worked at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory since 1981. In 2003, while on assignment in Washington, DC working to help establish the Department of Homeland Security, he was diagnosed with Stage IV throat cancer. During his “vacation” he chronicled his journey through cancer treatment in a weekly series of letters to his friends and family. Mike is married with two grown children: Sarah and David.
