An electrifying thriller about the rise of extremism. Two ritual murders―one in Rome and one in Jerusalem―rekindles an ancient rivalry between modern-day secret societies for knowledge lost at the fall of the Third Reich. Detective Antoine Marcas unwillingly teams up with the strong-willed Jade Zewinski to chase Neo-Nazi assassins across Europe. They must unravel an arcane mystery, sparked by information from newly revealed KGB files. Inspired from the true story of mysterious Freemason files thought to hold a terrible secret, stolen by the SS in 1940, recovered by the Red Army in 1945 and returned half a century later. First in a hugely successful series that has sold over 1.5 million copies in France and is translated into seventeen languages.

Vivid characters, evocative international settings, and a history darker than midnight. I highly recommend this novel! ―Douglas Preston, #1 bestselling coauthor of the famed Pendergast series of novels.“A fascinating tale with a tight-knit plot that mixes reality and fiction.” ―NVO“This book is extremely well documented, masterfully written and keeps all its promises. It’s an excellent read.” ―Le Figaro“Masterfully written, with a taste of the Da Vinci Code.” ―20 Minutes"Giacometti and Ravenne's series kickoff has abundant visceral appeal." ―Kirkus Reviews"European bestsellers Giacometti and Ravenne make their U.S. debut with this intrigue-filled thriller...those into Freemason lore and Nazi myths will be satisfied." ―Publishers Weekly “My kind of book! A superbly esoteric blend of history and adventure that takes you in and doesn't release you until the very last page. And did I say beautifully written?” ―Glenn Cooper, internationally bestselling thriller writer "This thriller has it all – crazy twists and turns, villains beyond mere evil, grim killings, and – some sweet loving – a perfect treat for someone who richly deserves a treat – you!” ― 5-star Netgalley review "This is much better and indeed much more intelligent than Dan Brown's 'The Da Vinci Code'." ―5-star Netgalley review

From the Author “This first book in the adventures of Inspector Antoine Marcas brings to light the true and astonishing story of the Freemason archives stolen from Paris by the Germans in 1940, then recovered in Berlin by the Soviets after the war. This story explores how the Vichy Regime persecuted Freemasons and the rise of Neo-Nazi movements in modern-day Europe.”

About the Author Eric Giacometti, an investigative reporter for a major French newspaper. He has covered a number of high-profile scandals and has done exhaustive research in the area of freemasonry.Jacques Ravenne is a literary scholar who has also written a biography of the Marquis de Sade and edited his letters. He loves to explore the hidden side of major historical events.Anne Trager loves France so much she has lived there for over a quarter of a century and just can’t seem to leave. What keeps her there is a uniquely French mix of pleasure seeking and creativity. Well, that and the wine. In 2011, she woke up one morning and said, “I just can’t stand it anymore. There are way too many good books being written in France not reaching a broader audience.” That’s when she founded Le French Book to translate some of those books into English. The company’s motto is “If we love it, we translate it,” and Anne loves crime fiction, mysteries and detective novels.

Young Obersturmbannfuhrer Francois Le Guermand dresses in a concrete bunker and admires his Nazi uniform. He especially loves the fear it engenders in almost anyone who sees it. Le Guermand is a Frenchman who joined the Legion of French Volunteers Against Bolshevism but changed sides. He is a traitor to his country. But this will be one of his lessor crimes. Le Guermand is going to go on to work in a newly formed shadowy organization whose mission is to perpetuate the beliefs of Adolf Hitler. That is just the surface, though. The real truth is much darker and a great deal more deadly. After the war the organization will spread from nation to nation and spark a hunt for information leading to a showdown between the forces of good and evil. Some sixty years after the end of World War II a survivor of the Dachau Prison Camp examines a piece of stone with ancient writings that seem to be related to the reconstruction of King Soloman's Temple in 520 BCE. It is a major find. Unfortunately this man will be murdered before the news gets out.Special agent Jade Zewinski meets Antoine Marcas, a homicide detective in Paris, under less than optimal circumstances at a party hosted by the French embassy in Rome. A young woman has been murdered and Marcas is asked by a friend to look at the body. Unfortunatly, Zewinski is in charge of security and she doesn't like the friend or the meddling. And she hates Freemasons. Antoine Marcas, a Freemason scholar in his spare time, is not going to have an easy time of it when the two are thrown together to solve the murder of the young woman who worked as an archivist in her spare time. There seems to be no good reason why Sophie Dawes was murdered in what turns out to be ritualistic and brutal fashion. But it turns out that there is. Sophie was carrying documents to Jerusalem to the scholar. Documents that might possibly shed some light on an ancient practice said to bring the supplicant immeasurable power. The Shadow Ritual. This was an exciting book. It's a story about the Thule, an organization that has perpetuated the idea of a pure Aryan race, and their hunt for the elements that would allow them to perform the Shadow Ritual. It is a treasure hunt that has one side believing that in the end they will be able to realize the dream of a powerful Aryan race that will dominate the world, and the other side trying to catch up. Marcas and Zewinski come into the investigation to solve a murder and end up knee-deep in a conspiracy that goes back to a time well before they were even born, and anyone who gets in the way has a distressing tendency to end up dead. Gruesomely dead. There is plenty of history here too. Hitler had his henchmen seize massive amounts of documents from various organizations looking for any occult references (or what he termed as being occult, anyway). The Russians got to Berlin ahead of the rest of the Allies and managed to make off with a great deal of this information and kept it for decades before returning it to the various countries and organizations that it was taken from. There is also the history of the Freemasons, as well as the various rumors that have always seemed to follow them. The race to find the elements that will allow the completion of the Shadow Ritual is a bloody one. The Thule will not allow the opportunity to slip through their hands and as Marcas and Zewinski are drawn deeper into the conspiracy, their lives are at risk. It's a story of a group of rabid believers who are willing to go to any lengths to make their vision of what they want the world to be become reality, and the people determined to find the truth as well as stop them. What they both find is going to be totally unexpected. It's a darned fine story. My thanks to NewGalley, the authors and publisher for making the book available for me to read and review. I enjoyed it immensely.

"Flesh falls from the bones" By Cheryl Stout SHADOW RITUAL is an action-packed thriller that follows two separate secret societies - the Freemasons and the Thule - on a deadly quest. The book started out a bit slow for me but was soon barreling along non-stop, alternating between societies. A lot of history was included in this tale and it was interesting to me especially to see where the Freemasons began. The synopsis of the book on Goodreads says this is actually based on a true story. Hmm...seems farfetched to me but then truth can be stranger than fiction.I liked the male and female protagonists of the story that were at each other's throats throughout the book. And there were some truly evil people in the book. If you have a weak stomach, this might not be the tale for you.If you like thrillers or historical fiction especially World War II era, try this one out. I don't think you'll be disappointed.NOTE: I received this book from Le French Book through Net Galley in exchange for my honest review.
