The patient experience is, at its core, both universal and individual. Patients in hospitals everywhere universally experience discomfort, fear, frustration, anxiety, and everything else that goes with being acutely ill. Yet how they each process these feelings; how they interpret the culture of the hospital and the values of those who care for them; and how they manage their expectations is totally unique. Susan E. Mazer, Ph.D., has been observing, writing, and speaking about the patient experience for more than 20 years. In a compilation of selected posts from her blog, she offers insights and observations to improve the patient experience, including: the effect of environmental factors, such as noise, on patients; the importance of providing compassionate care; and what HCAHPS scores really mean.

By Linn Storey This collection of research, thoughts and experiences of Susan Mazer reminds us of what has been forgotten in healthcare. As technology has advanced, the focus has changed from bedside care and comfort to maintaining machines and equipment. As accreditation demands have increased and survey results have become increasingly important we have focused on paper and reports. When did we stop spending time with patients? Sitting at there bedside? Holding their hand? Spending time with their family? Susan sets forth some thought provoking examples with insight from a patient's point of view as well as simple talking points and resolutions. Great read!

A Classic Collection to awakened health care organizations - and all parties and practitioners By Jean Watson, PhD, RN, AHN-BC< FAAN Dr. Susan Mazer tells it like it is - from the patient's inner world view - awakening practitioners and systems to gaps in human caring -whereby the mindset is from outer world foci on institutional cultural norms. Susan, through her collected blogs, she integrates her life journey and expertise in this arena. Through this classic collection Dr. Mazer reveals how the institutional norms and lack of human concerns, lack of awareness, lack of critique on mainstream practices, results in uncaring, even toxic experiences for staff, patients, families and organization. This very deep critique combined with insight, enlightened informed consciousness new practices are offered to shift cultures from inside out. This collected work can serve as a text for practicing nurses and students at all levels in nursing and all areas of health care.

By dave adams Improving the Patient Experience: One Person at a Time is a MUST READ for those in healthcare from the front line staff to the leaders of an organization. This is the type of material that I read in a sitting, but will go back to over and over again to refresh on concepts like: human flourishing; the first symptom of a healthy, vital, and engaged organization; what night staff might say to a patient who is in a state of unrest. Through true examples of successes and failures, Susan captures compassion, suffering and empathy needs in a way that ignites one to want to make a difference, one person at a time!Thank-you for your passion and drive to raise the bar in the patient experience, Susan!Carla Adams RN, MSN
