The GOP captured nine Senate seats and took comfortable control of the upper chamber, while also picking up thirteen House seats--its total of 247 in the lower chamber is its high-water mark since the Roaring Twenties. The party did well in the governorships, too, even winning a shocker in Maryland.In "The Surge," more than a dozen political analysts examine this historic midterm in a series of essays looking back on what Republicans did to reap the gains that they realized last November and looking forward to the huge 2016 presidential election that will determine who succeeds President Obama.2014 began with the primary season, and one essay recalls how the GOP was more successful this cycle in striking a winning balance between ideology and electability when selecting its Senate nominees.The fall campaign was memorable, and other essayists look back at the races for the Senate, House, and governorships, as well as some of the issues and conditions in the country that influenced the contests. There were a few key October events that contributed to the Republicans' late surge. In the last hundred years, there have been nine such elections (1920, 1928, 1940, 1960, 1968, 1976, 1988, 2000, and 2008). In each and every one of those nine contests, the party not holding the presidency improved its standing in the popular vote by four to fourteen percentage points compared to its performance in the previous election.This phenomenon has occurred not only when the country was in trouble, but also when things seemed well. In 2000, George W. Bush brought the Republicans' percentage of the popular vote up seven points from the previous election, from 41 to 48. Twelve years earlier, Michael Dukakis was criticized for a bland, ineffectual campaign, but even in the midst of the peace, prosperity, and thawing Cold War tensions of 1988 he was able to convince enough voters that it was time for a change that he brought the Democrats' share of the popular vote up from 41 to 46. Mitt Romney took 47 percent of the popular vote in 2012, and if this pattern holds for the tenth straight "third term" election, Republican gatherings on the night of November 8, 2016 will be happy indeed."The Surge" contains raw vote totals for senatorial and gubernatorial contests, crosstabs galore from the exit polls, and tables, charts, graphs, and a scatter plot to help the reader interpret the analysis in the book. It is a great read for political junkies looking back at 2014 and forward to 2016.
