From School Library Journal Gr 9 Up—The second book in Green's trilogy picks up the story shortly after the conclusion of Half Bad (2014). Nathan has escaped from the Hunters again, and is living alone in the forest. Although he has received his magical ability from his father, Marcus (a powerful Black Witch), he still doesn't know how to control it. He's angry and frustrated, and worried that he'll end up more like Marcus than like his White Witch mother. As well as his internal struggles, the physical battle between Black Witches and White Witches begins in earnest here, and many of the characters from the previous installment are involved. Readers may have difficulty keeping track of the large cast. Like many stories of good versus evil, family, friendship, and trust are key themes. Stubborn Nathan learns about all of these the hard way, and the author's strong writing and the engaging plot will keep teens intrigued. Scenes of graphic violence make this title appropriate for older readers. It's essential to have read Half Bad to understand this volume, and readers who enjoyed it will devour this sequel. VERDICT Highly recommended for fans of dark fantasy.—Marlyn Beebe, Long Beach Public Library, Los Alamitos, CA

What is human or even civilized? The blood and gore, the willingness to endure and survive at any price, and the dichotomies between good and bad, love and hate, wild and civilized—all haunt the reader, climaxing in a tragic ending that portends the horror, violence, and possible relationships in the trilogy’s final installment." —Booklist, starred review"Green delivers vibrant characters, and Nathan's relationships arc in thrilling highs and lows. . . About the Author Sally Green lives in north-west England. She has had various jobs and even a profession but in 2010 she discovered a love of writing and now just can’t stop. She used to keep chickens, makes decent jam, doesn't mind ironing, loves to walk in Wales even when it's raining, and will probably never jog again. She really ought to drink less coffee. Half Bad is her first novel.

This book was just as amazing as the first, and my adorable little antihero is getting darker. The first part of the book is peppered with his thoughts, which make him seem wild and unhinged. The writing style is certainly unconventional, but that’s because it follows Nathan’s thinking process, which is strange and disjointed and choppy, so it the story reads like that, as well. But it doesn’t take away from the writing at all, instead it adds to it, making it so much more interesting. And Gabriel. Poor Gabriel. Nathan was so mean to him in the book. Not intentionally, of course, but Gabriel has a crush on my before mentioned adorable little antihero, and in some parts Nathan will lead him on, and in others he will cause Gabriel to crash and burn. I spent the whole book wincing for him. There’s also a new character, Nesbitt. Nesbitt is…Nesbitt. He’s the servant of a powerful black witch, is funny, and I couldn’t help but pronounce his name “Nesbutt” for the first 1/3 or so that he was in the book. Slightly bad, yes.Annalise is in this book, too, but I still don’t know how I feel about her. I can’t decide if I like her and Nathan together or not. I might be rooting for Nathan/Gabriel slightly more. But I also really want to see Annalise become this awesome, tough little witch, so I won’t judge her yet. This book also threw another set of cliches out the window. Women tend to be more powerful as witches than men. Nathan kills things. Willingly. And he doesn’t spend half the book panicking about it.And, he embraces the animal side of himself, which shouldn’t be so shocking in YA, but it was. This book dabbles in gray areas. Nathan isn’t bad, but he isn’t good either. The black witches aren’t evil, but they don’t want to go out and save puppies. But neither are the white witches. The white witches, the hunters especially, can be just as “evil” as the black witches are said to be.As for the plot, I didn’t find it quite as interesting as I did the first book. But all the new, interesting characters make up for it, and there were a couple of really great battles in there, as well.To sum it up in a sentence: Not quite as good as Half Bad, but still quite fantastic.

The beginning was a little slow to get going but once new and old friends pop up again the story really takes off. I appreciate the time given to some family bonding (though I won't say more so that there aren't any spoilers). I can't wait for the third book but definitely will have to do just that, wait. The story definitely leaves off on a cliff hanger. If you can't handle that (which it is a little hard to with this book), then I recommend waiting til the third book comes out then just reading them all at once.Content Reminders: This book has scenes of violence described. The main character must kill to survive many times. The acts are described in general terms (stabbing, shooting, biting, ripping, etc.) though I would not say the scenes are graphically detailed. The amount of blood is mentioned though. Also, there is a scene where a character must perform a witch ritual that is mentioned earlier in the book (and previous book) but not performed until this book (trying to avoid spoilers).Recommended Age: 13+ (definitely would be a PG-13 movie if made in the United States).

This book was boring. I struggled to get into it. I struggled to finish it. There was a few actions scenes. I get the sense that the author likes high pages number instead of a good story. So much useless scenes and things. The whole book is supposed to be leading up to the Alliance taking back s***, but nothing happens.
