About the Author Sheila Markin Nielsen has over 25 years of experience running her own firm as a career coach. She is an attorney with a master's degree in social work, an author, columnist, and popular public speaker. Sheila worked as a counselor before going to law school. After law school she worked as a criminal prosecutor, first in state court as an assistant district attorney in Philadelphia and Chicago, and then in federal court as an assistant U.S. attorney in Chicago. She also served on the U.S. Attorney’s Office hiring team. A former chair of the Part-Time Lawyer’s Network of the Chicago Bar Association, Nielsen served as Executive Director of the national association Lawyers for Alternative Work Schedules (LAWS) from 1988 to 1990 before leaving to launch her own firm. Founded in 1990, Nielsen Career Consulting has assisted over 3,500 professionals in job search and career path guidance and professional development.

Most job hunting guides focus on what I'll call the "facts' of the search -- the who and what and where of locating a job. What Sheila Nielsen brings to the conversation is the social-emotional intelligence job hunters need to be successful. She teaches how to network your way through a transition, and she does it in a way that's credible and fun to read. The cool thing is, networking is a skill set everyone needs, whether you're currently in a job search or not. And the relationships Ms. Nielsen explains how to build can keep your career moving, long after you've landed that job you really wanted.

Milling This book helped my son land his dream job in three months. A recent chemical engineering grad, his college career center and hundreds of on-line applications lead nowhere. Using Sheila Nielsen's networking guidelines, he learned of may new career paths and enjoyed talking to interesting people. He started to have fun with the job search! Many people were willing to help, and just a couple of “ogres.” Ultimately, he got a job through an on-line application, but a “knight” helped him prepare for the interview. The skills he learned will help him throughout his career.
