Not Thinkin'... Just Rememberin'... is a tour de force. This manuscript is very thorough and exhaustively researched. The sheer size of the manuscript might seem intimidating, but what else should one expect when The Alamo and John Wayne are the subjects? Of course, The Alamo is no ordinary movie, so the telling of the making of the movie is no small feat. Mr. Farkis is an adept writer. He knows his subject extremely well. His knowledge is intensive and extensive. It's quite easy to tell that, while he is a scholar, he is also a fan of both The Alamo and John Wayne. He does a great job of keeping the retelling of this information entertaining and interesting. The story of the making of the Alamo is told chronologically. This is the best way to tell the story because this allows for several other sub-stories to be told while the main story is unfolding. The tone and writing style is very approachable and open. It works well for this manuscript. There are many lighthearted moments that help anchor the overall manuscript, and they serve as counterpoints to the weightier discussions about politics, disagreements, and money issues that surrounded John Wayne's ambitious endeavor.

By Rick Hassler Think of this book as one of the world's longest term papers, certainly the longest one Alamodian John Farkis ever wrote. And take your time reading this because it's addictive stuff, thoroughly researched, thoroughly documented.Farkis takes us behind the scenes, giving us a fly-on-the-wall peek at the making of John Wayne's epic film. We read about all sorts of people, including their flaws and good points, and come away with a new understanding of this film and the era in which it was made.Readers will walk the streets of Alamo Village and the surrounding area in the fall of 1959, where they'll witness a plethora of vignettes: Wayne calling Richard Widmark a "crazy little (bleep)," then totally forgetting what he'd just said . . . Wayne testing extra Robert Harris's acting ability by rattling off a bunch of words in Spanish and then demanding Harris repeat them, with cameras rolling . . . Linda Cristal and Joan O'Brien telling marvelous tales of their experiences on the set . . . the technical side of the production, including the taping of the "Spirit of the Alamo" television special and Wayne's reaction to seeing just what videotape could do.Readers will man the ramparts of the Waynamo, where they, along with actors, stuntmen and extras, will marvel at the sight of the Mexican army in all its glory on the first day the latter appeared on the set en masse.We have in Mr. Farkis an unabashed fan of Wayne's film, dogged fact-gatherer, hard thinker, fearsome writer, BS-weeder-througher and a man who willingly wears his replica of Smitty's skunkskin cap just to irritate his pet dogs. You have to like a man like that.My best advice is to brew up a pot of coffee (or eight or 10), put the film's music soundtrack on in the background, find a comfortable chair, and dig in.

There are roughly 1,00 pages here of facts, trivia, and speculation, all painstakingly researched by John Farkis, whose accomplishment in putting together this book appears to nearly match the effort Wayne put into making the movie itself.Farkis cuts through the usual press agent puffery, digging into studio records, personal correspondence, transcripts of participant interviews, and, whenever possible, interviews with surviving cast and crew members.The book's timeline takes us back to the beginning of Wayne's career, detailing the evolution of his acting career and his emergence as a political force in Hollywood. It is particularly interesting to follow the torturous journey of "The Alamo" from concept to finished film, a twelve year odyssey that became Wayne's obsession even as he worked in such other beloved masterpieces as "The Quiet Man"and "The Searchers. "The Alamo," it turns out, was on his mind 24/7/365.Fact, it is often said, is stranger than fiction, and the story of "The Alamo" in production has all of the elements of a slam-bang novel. Colorful vignettes of the cast and crew members give us unforgettable, fully rounded characters. The story of the production itself is one of struggle and single minded obsession. There is even a real life murder on the set. It's hard to imagine anyone asking for more.Whether a reader is a movie buff, a history buff, or some casual amalgam of both, "Not Thinkin'...Just Rememberin'" makes for hours, if not days or weeks, of compelling reading.

Murray This book is 1018 pages long (that includes the indexes, etc.) I am almost done with it and it is a highly detailed and referenced book that is hard to put down. It tells the complete story of John Wayne's quest to make the film the Alamo. It includes the history of his career with Republic studio and John Ford as well as organizational aspects of making and producing a movie, that will open your eyes. I fondly remember the anticipation and event that was the opening of the film at Los Angeles Carthy Circle theatre. This book has added much to my understanding of the difficulties and expense of putting such a movie together. The discussion of the stuntmen, props, construction of the buildings in Bracketville, Texas are amazing. I recommend this book for many reasons. It will give you some real insights into John Wayne and the making of movies from beginning to editing through advertising promotion. It is excellent.
