Review This is what reviewers are saying about Love and Tumult:

  • "I just read the book, and I enjoyed it a lot..." - Madeleine
  • "...the book resonates with authenticity." -kybookworm
  • "It gives an interesting account of life in Africa, how aid affects the country and the people it helps. The author clearly has detailed knowledge of all three." -Loves Reading
  • "The author does a wonderful job describing the African scene and various foreign aid projects. He also glazes over some of the questions that befall foreign aid. Having studied foreign aid for many years and read numerous books on the subject, I believe K. Kumar did a fantastic job bringing the subject to light without adding any political commentary."-Loves2ReadBooks

From the Author I would like to acknowledge the assistance I received in preparing this book. For editing, I used BubbleCow. The cover is a stock photo of Ipanema beach in Rio de Janeiro, and the cover design was done by GoOn Write. Lastly, this book was prepared using Pressbooks.

But between the beginning and the end, there is little love and tumult in what is basically a report on charity efforts across underpriviledged countries. Protagonist Vik is now thirty and looking for a meaning to existence. He thinks he will find it away from home (Washington, D.C.), as well as with the exotic and capricious Latha. And so he begins his quest by exploring Africa, and later, South America through mostly successful charity work and totally failed business ventures. For the most part, I don’t mind traveling with Vik from South Africa to Ethiopia to Brazil. I even appreciate some of his humor and self-derision. What I mind is that Kumar calls this work a novel. I would call it a travel book. Or a creative report narrative. For the book examines the charity work made by the US in a good number of countries on the African and South American continents in so much detail, and so repetitiously, that it cannot be classified as fiction. Latha the love interest comes like occasional spice on a dish. Actually, dishes and local meals come much more often than Latha herself. There is such a lack of passionate yarn that the romance is hardly believable. If drawn differently, Latha the Rwandan, victimized woman could stand as a symbol of Africa. Mysterious, elusive, impossible to grasp. But able to face adversity with pride for the most part. That’s what Kumar suggests. But the author suggests too much. Except for the charity work which is hammered on here and everywhere, and time and again, the whole narrative is a grazing, a series of feathery vignettes. There are times when the writing is quite beautiful. Some descriptions are priceless. This said, I would advise the author to use a different editor next time. And I am not talking about the typos. Mark Twain, Truman Capote, Alexis de Tocqueville, many others, wrote fantastic travel books. With a good editor, this could have been a great travel book as well. The talent is definitely present. But the prose here is like Vik, in quest of meaning and identity.

That doesn't mean the story was bad, just not what I was expecting. In fact, I found it quite interesting reading about the different cultures (and food!). The author made you experience it, the same way the character is experiencing it when he thinks:"This place is so rich in depth that the only honest thing you can say is that no one can really know Africa. You can just experience it, and try to pick up as much as you can."And as far as his trips to Africa go, the following sums it up nicely."I was rather happy for the time being, having survived my second trip into the depths of Africa. I could honestly and proudly say that I knew less about Africa on this day than before I arrived. Before I arrived, Africa was a continent of poor, helpless people, all suffering from disease and strife. Now, I saw degrees and shades of poverty for some and opulence and grandeur for others. Africa was now a mystery for me."In all, I think the author accomplished what he set out to do--broaden his readers' understanding of countries less fortunate than ours. The book shows not only Vik's hope and despair in his relationship with Latha, but also the hope and despair, or love and tumult, evident in the people Vik encounters.I leave you with a final quote from the book:"There was this great promise in the mysteries of the world; behind every adventure there was something new."

Peace and understanding By DragonOne In search of meaning and life purpose Vik leaves his bureaucratic job in Washington D.C. to explore another continent, Africa. I haven't read many books that explore Africa in this way and by the vivid descriptions provided by the author, I really felt like I was there and getting an insiders view of the lives and worlds that the author experienced. Feeling unsettled throughout, Vik seeks his place in the world by first trying to understand it. A crucial understanding has him observe that no matter where it is you go on the earth, life is pretty much the same, people living their lives in pretty much the same way and always the division between the way the elite band of the rich live their lives compared to those of the more numerous poor, who eke out a living in any which way they can. Returning from Africa to the US Vik is still unsettled and is soon heading off to South America where he eventually lands up in Brazil. Although he still doesn't seem to have found what he is looking for, he nevertheless has finally found peace with the world and within himself. Perhaps accepting the reality and putting to bed ones fantasies of the world can result in greater peace and understanding.
