About the Author Eli Merritt, M.D. completed a B.A. in history at Yale, M.A. in ethics at Yale, medical degree at Case Western Reserve, medical internship at the Lahey Clinic, and residency in psychiatry at Stanford. He is a psychiatrist and mental health expert who consults widely in the Bay Area. Founder of Merritt Mental Health, a Care Navigation practice that helps patients and family members navigate the mental health system, he is past president of the San Francisco Psychiatric Society and past member of the Adjunct Clinical Faculty at Stanford. Born in Nashville, he lives in San Francisco with his wife and two sons.

A cogent, timely, innovative and valuable resource By SmartShopper This book should be on the shelf of every Bay Area mental health provider as well as in the hands of parents, teachers, and others who are worried about suicide risk in someone close to them.It is two books interlaced within one another. In the background, a series of essays on suicide risk, prevention and management. In the foreground, a detailed resource directory of mental health services in the Bay Area with a specific focus upon assistance for suicidal crises.Dr. Merritt is an eminent local Bay area psychiatrist who survived the difficult childhood trauma of losing his mother to suicide. Perhaps only such a man - so uniquely qualified and positioned - could have written this cogent, timely, innovative and valuable resource.Dr. Merritt has compiled an invaluable contribution to local mental health services, a model for a resource directory hopefully to be replicated in the near future for all the various regions in our nation.

The book is an amazing and thorough resource and includes groups By Frau Olly This book was given to me by a friend who knew that I had an interest in suicide prevention after a close friend jumped from the Golden Gate Bridge.The book is an amazing and thorough resource and includes groups, hospitals, programs, risk factors... so much valuable information. I wish that I had known about the suicide risk behaviors before the death of my friend because she definitely had warning signs. Dr. Merritt talks about his mother's suicide when he was a kid and it's incredible that he was able to harness that experience into helping others avoid a similar situation.

The pace of the book was just perfect: lots of background, in-depth character analysis, but enough action to keep me engrossed in the plot. Marian is quite a believable person; it was easy to identify with her struggles. I loved Oliver, and cheered him on, especially later in the book (can't say what he does, exactly, or it will give away the surprise) when the fate of the woman he loves rests squarely on his ability to foil a plan. The plot is intricate, and the ending is surprising. I highly recommend The White Rose.

There are elements of social comedy and farce, as well as delicious accounts of sex. It's a very hopeful book that cheers for its middle-aged heroine without bashing men. It's a book where (almost) all the characters grow from and are strengthened by the ordeals they endure. There is history here, and scholarship, and a social conscious, but mostly it's just a fun romp.

This is a beautifully written book, and author Jean Hanff Korelitz is to be congratulated.The story is rich and complex. There are a variety of plots and subplots, each of which is compelling enough to be the center of its own novel.The story gets off to a slow start, which serves neither the author nor her readers well. Yet once one immerses oneself in these characters, THE WHITE ROSE is touching and gripping.There are a multitude of love affairs described, with excellent descriptions of passion.There are different versions of the story of the White Rose, including the real one about a small group of upper class Germans who resisted the Nazis.There are details about the highest levels of academia and scholarship, and about the lifestyles of those New Yorkers who, quietly and without ostentation, are very, very rich.THE WHITE ROSE is filled with amazing insights, so incisive and so clear that these literally are breathtaking.The only quibbles go to the author's descriptions of cooking. In one scene, on a day she describes as warm, a character puts on a tweed jacket and necktie to reduce a sauce and boil some pasta. Please! Who wears wool to labor over a hot stove? In another scene, a different character cooks a brisket in less than an hour. It takes more than an hour simply to prep a brisket, and the cooking needs four to six hours. Didn't anyone associated with the manuscript--author, agent, editor--have a clue?The other issue is the author's sense of direction. The route she suggests using between Manhattan and East Hampton is preposterous. Once again, this weird discrepancy stops the lovely flow of her story.Yet as a book, THE WHITE ROSE is the finest use of the metaphor of the rose as an example both of the life cycle and a thing of pure beauty since the excellent novel THE ROSE GROWER was published in 2000.THE WHITE ROSE is a perfect bloom.

I was sent a copy of Cults: In Too Deep From Jonestown to Scientology to review. Anything that is out of society's norm is fascinating, and there is probably enough information and books on cults out there to fill its own library. But most people don't want read just about one cult unless they have a personal connection to that one. The Lighting Guide on Cults gives you a top down view of the different cults over the century and what they're about. Not only does it cover the cults themselves, but the book goes into what draws people to cults, the type of people they target, the methods people use to recruit and the history of different cults. The book is only 117 pages, but gives you a lot of information in the small media on how some ideologies can go from religion to controlling structures.

It of course includes all of the most famous cults that we are all familiar with like the Manson family, Heavens Gate, Jim Jones and The Peoples Temple, etc..., but it also includes many I have never heard of! Raelism, The Brethren, and Eckankar are just a few of the cults that it hit on that were unknown to me. Also included are well known belief systems that many may not realize are considered cults, like Scientology which has a huge following! I was very surprised to learn that there are over 2,000 cults in existence today! It touches some on what causes people to join a cult, as well as the fact that most cult leaders seem to have a narcissistic personality. These men, and even some women, have talked thousands of people into believing they are prophets or somehow know secrets of the universe that others don't! As we have seen play out, this often has dire consequences! From cults that are offshoots of established religions, to ones that worship aliens or other grand illusions, this book touches a little on all of them! Definitely an informative read for anyone interested in what could drive someone to lead or follow a cult!I received this product in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

Regency romance at its best By Susanne Matthews It has been a while since I'd read Georgian and Regency romances, but within seconds, the authors dragged me back in time through the use of clever language and beautiful descriptions. While all the stories are excellent, I'll focus on A Rose By Any Other, by Giselle Marks and The Runaway Duchess by Francine Howarth.A Rose By Any Other is the classic damsel in distress story. The beautiful Rose is hiding from her past in Bath. When the Earl of Chisolm believes his young heir may be being targeting by an actress, he goes to Bath to set things right, but Rosalie King isn't what he expects and he's captivated by her. Discovering the lady isn't what she seems, intrigues him and when he kisses her, his intentions to remain a bachelor for life go out the window. When someone kidnaps his lady love, he has no choice but to ride to the rescue. The story flows well, the actions well paces, and the conclusion eminently satisfying.The Runaway Duchess is the classic second chance at love story with a twist. The story starts out in Randolph's POV and I fully expected the story would be about him, but it changes to the POV of Mattij, his cousin and the story turns out to be about the cousin and Juliana, the woman he'd loved and thought he'd lost. The story is poignant and the lovely Frances puts it all in perspective, Mattij's aunt the Countess or Martock is a force to be reckoned with, a perfect example of the snobbery and sense of self-importance for which the nobility was known. The story ending is satisfying, and I was pleased to see some of the issues brought up successfully concluded. I have the feeling there's more to the story yet to come.If you like historical romance set in England in the Regency period, you'll love these stories and the others in the anthology.

Stiles While I am not a regular reader of Georgian and Regency romances, this anthology drew me in with a combination of lively writing, fascinating characters and an eye by all the authors for period detail. They struck a difficult balance between remaining true to the period yet easily for modern readers to understand. Witty dialogue and vivid descriptions also feature in all of the short stories. These stories also acquainted me with the city of Bath. An ancient Roman city based around its famous baths (where no doubt plenty of dramas unfolded), it became the setting of much intrigue and passion during the 18th and 19th centuries. Reading this collection makes me want to learn more about this little-studied (at least by myself) British city.All of the stories are wonderful in their own right, however, the best was "A Rose By Any Other" by Giselle Marks. This story features two characters who start off antagonists yet wind up falling in love. One is a beautiful but disreputable woman with some skeletons in her closet, the actress Rosalie King. The other is the iron-willed and stalwart Earl of Chisholm, who fears that his young heir (a dissipated and troublesome disappointment to the Earl) has been ensnared by King, goes to Bath to set things straight. At first, he sees her as a problem to be solved. When they kiss, he sees her as the love of his life. And when she is abducted by the true villains of the piece, he becomes a hero in his efforts to save her. All and all, a very strong and satisfying read and one that I hope is expanded into a novel.And of course, the proceeds go to benefit a good cause. So if you have interest in what I have described, I highly recommend this book.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A Good Read While Drinking A Good Cup of Coffee By Karin I have been to Bath in the UK, but never got to see the Chocolate House. (I may be old, but, not THAT old!) However, I did enjoy visiting it through The Chocolate House – All for Love – Anthology: “Masqueraders”. I could almost smell the chocolate as various patrons lifted the lid on their cup of chocolate. The escapades were enjoyable and I hope to meet up with some of these characters in future stories! Giselle Marks’ story A Rose by Any Other could easily be adapted to some money fighting families of today. Elizabeth Bailey’s story of A Fatal Connection shows that the sins of the past are never truly buried. The Runaway Duchess by Francine Howarth made me think wistfully about the use of hand fans. AND, who can forget jade green orbs? Well, we can follow this group in The Highwayman’s Mistress. Susan Ruth introduced us to the Phantasmagorical Extravaganza during the Death at the Chocolate House. Jessica Schira understands the worth of A-Pig-In-A-Poke as we follow the money trail from the money broker to conspiracy against the crown. Last, but far from least, is David W. Wilkin’s A Little Chocolate in the Morning. I was a little disappointed that there wasn’t even a tiny Steampunk type of vehicle in this story. However, I readily moved from the Commons to the House and from London to Bath with Rock. It is so nice to have a very good friend with an older brother who, with the help of his friends, can easily fill a dance card when necessary.

The author shares SO MUCH about her experiences and the key interpersonal relationship skills it takes to survive. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in beginning a career in the world of luxury superyachts as well as those of us who are already in the throes of it and looking to enhance our professional repertoire!
