Regency romance at its best By Susanne Matthews It has been a while since I'd read Georgian and Regency romances, but within seconds, the authors dragged me back in time through the use of clever language and beautiful descriptions. While all the stories are excellent, I'll focus on A Rose By Any Other, by Giselle Marks and The Runaway Duchess by Francine Howarth.A Rose By Any Other is the classic damsel in distress story. The beautiful Rose is hiding from her past in Bath. When the Earl of Chisolm believes his young heir may be being targeting by an actress, he goes to Bath to set things right, but Rosalie King isn't what he expects and he's captivated by her. Discovering the lady isn't what she seems, intrigues him and when he kisses her, his intentions to remain a bachelor for life go out the window. When someone kidnaps his lady love, he has no choice but to ride to the rescue. The story flows well, the actions well paces, and the conclusion eminently satisfying.The Runaway Duchess is the classic second chance at love story with a twist. The story starts out in Randolph's POV and I fully expected the story would be about him, but it changes to the POV of Mattij, his cousin and the story turns out to be about the cousin and Juliana, the woman he'd loved and thought he'd lost. The story is poignant and the lovely Frances puts it all in perspective, Mattij's aunt the Countess or Martock is a force to be reckoned with, a perfect example of the snobbery and sense of self-importance for which the nobility was known. The story ending is satisfying, and I was pleased to see some of the issues brought up successfully concluded. I have the feeling there's more to the story yet to come.If you like historical romance set in England in the Regency period, you'll love these stories and the others in the anthology.

Stiles While I am not a regular reader of Georgian and Regency romances, this anthology drew me in with a combination of lively writing, fascinating characters and an eye by all the authors for period detail. They struck a difficult balance between remaining true to the period yet easily for modern readers to understand. Witty dialogue and vivid descriptions also feature in all of the short stories. These stories also acquainted me with the city of Bath. An ancient Roman city based around its famous baths (where no doubt plenty of dramas unfolded), it became the setting of much intrigue and passion during the 18th and 19th centuries. Reading this collection makes me want to learn more about this little-studied (at least by myself) British city.All of the stories are wonderful in their own right, however, the best was "A Rose By Any Other" by Giselle Marks. This story features two characters who start off antagonists yet wind up falling in love. One is a beautiful but disreputable woman with some skeletons in her closet, the actress Rosalie King. The other is the iron-willed and stalwart Earl of Chisholm, who fears that his young heir (a dissipated and troublesome disappointment to the Earl) has been ensnared by King, goes to Bath to set things straight. At first, he sees her as a problem to be solved. When they kiss, he sees her as the love of his life. And when she is abducted by the true villains of the piece, he becomes a hero in his efforts to save her. All and all, a very strong and satisfying read and one that I hope is expanded into a novel.And of course, the proceeds go to benefit a good cause. So if you have interest in what I have described, I highly recommend this book.
6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A Good Read While Drinking A Good Cup of Coffee By Karin I have been to Bath in the UK, but never got to see the Chocolate House. (I may be old, but, not THAT old!) However, I did enjoy visiting it through The Chocolate House – All for Love – Anthology: “Masqueraders”. I could almost smell the chocolate as various patrons lifted the lid on their cup of chocolate. The escapades were enjoyable and I hope to meet up with some of these characters in future stories! Giselle Marks’ story A Rose by Any Other could easily be adapted to some money fighting families of today. Elizabeth Bailey’s story of A Fatal Connection shows that the sins of the past are never truly buried. The Runaway Duchess by Francine Howarth made me think wistfully about the use of hand fans. AND, who can forget jade green orbs? Well, we can follow this group in The Highwayman’s Mistress. Susan Ruth introduced us to the Phantasmagorical Extravaganza during the Death at the Chocolate House. Jessica Schira understands the worth of A-Pig-In-A-Poke as we follow the money trail from the money broker to conspiracy against the crown. Last, but far from least, is David W. Wilkin’s A Little Chocolate in the Morning. I was a little disappointed that there wasn’t even a tiny Steampunk type of vehicle in this story. However, I readily moved from the Commons to the House and from London to Bath with Rock. It is so nice to have a very good friend with an older brother who, with the help of his friends, can easily fill a dance card when necessary.
