Review I can't wait to have this book in my backpack (and in my hand) on a mountain trail! Tim Spira's guide will appeal to hikers, waterfall enthusiasts, wildflower lovers, and folks interested in the natural history of the Southern Appalachian region, plus boaters and fisherpersons who encounter waterfalls in their wanderings. The wildflowers are placed in the context of natural communities and other natural history features through 30 fascinating hikes. By Southern Comfort This is an extremely well thought out guide book-probably the best I have ever used. Before using this guide, I was "plant blind".....I walked by so many amazing wildflowers (and other plants) without really seeing them.Directions to each hike's trailhead are REALLY helpful (even if you have a navigtion system). Before starting on a hike, notice that each hike has a plant list, with referenced page numbers to go to in order to find a photoThe wildflower profile section is arranged by flower color which is very helpful.Dr Spira includes a hike narrative which helps you understand what to look for (not just wildflowrrs, he tells you about trail length and difficulty, about the plnt communities you pass through, and even which birds or insects etc you might see.We have used this guide to see 5 different waterfalls already this spring-can't wait to do the other 25!

By lkw I'm delighted now to have a wonderful guide to some of the best hikes to enjoy both spectacular waterfalls and an abundance of wildflowers in the Southern Appalachians, an area known for its extraordinary biodiversity. The guide is accompanied by hike descriptions rich in details about the wildflowers, plants, and natural history along the way. With beautiful photographs and interesting species profiles of common wildflowers, it’s a perfect companion to many enjoyable hikes to come.Unlike most hiking guides, Spira provides species lists for each hike in flowering sequence from spring to fall, along with species profiles for 125 plants. And even better are the interpretive hike descriptions. They point out interesting wildflowers that you're likely to see on each hike, as well commenting on potential birds and other animals, so they're much more lively and interesting than standard "hike descriptions," in addition to the usual trail maps and location information.I haven't been on all of these hikes yet, but their descriptions have me ready to go. This guide is excellent encouragement to slow down, observe, and enjoy the diversity of nature along the trail...
